Nigerian army has discovered and destroyed an IEDs in a forest in Abia State and consequently destroyed it.
According to Promise Uzoma Okoro, this was contained in a release by Acting Assistant director army public relations.
As part of intensified efforts to curb the criminal activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), troops of the 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have recorded a significant operational success under ongoing shaping operations ahead of Operation EASTERN SANITY.
On 8 February 2026, at about 9:00 a.m., troops of the Brigade, while conducting clearance operations along the Umuchinma pipeline route leading into the forest, discovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strategically planted by suspected IPOB/ESN elements.

The IEDs were locally fabricated using 5kg gas cylinders, nails, water-gel explosives, two detonators, and electrical cables, indicating deliberate intent to inflict casualties on security personnel and civilians.
Further exploitation of the area led to the recovery of four empty cartridge cases and two bags containing nails, suspected to be materials for further IED construction. Troops also successfully cleared a camp belonging to the criminal elements operating within the forest enclave.
The operational success followed credible intelligence provided by a suspect currently under investigation, who had earlier confessed to being a subject-matter expert in the criminal network.
Reacting to the development, the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General A. M. Dikko, expressed satisfaction with the professionalism, resilience, and doggedness displayed by the troops, assuring that further exploitation of the Umuchinma Forest is ongoing to flush out remaining criminal elements.
The general security situation within the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility remains calm but unpredictable, as troops continue to maintain maximum vigilance. Troop morale and fighting efficiency, the Brigade noted, remain high and satisfactory.
