Imo House Assembly: Akataobi Endorsement By Arthur Egwim, Matters Arising

By Onyebuchi Nwankwo

Recently, Imo State based tabloids and social media platforms were awash with the news of the endorsement of Hon. Ugboaja Victor Chinedu, popularly known as Akataobi Ideato, by the member representing Ideato North State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Barr. Arthur Egwim.

The endorsement, however, elicited mixed reactions from the public particularly, political gladiators and watchers of Ideato extraction. The finest aspect of the diverse outbursts was that none disfavoured the candidacy of Akataobi, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), House of Assembly flagbearer, and his chances of clinching the plum job of being the next man to be in the State Assembly for the good people of Ideato North LGA.

Another heartwarming side of the said reactions was that it cut across party leanings. Even stalwarts of the so called mega political parties with House of Assembly Candidates in Ideato North, were not left out in the beautiful drama.

Not a few were of the view that the endorsement by the incumbent representative would add no spice to the already settled victory of the APGA candidate, even as some raised eyebrows over the likelihood of a “godfather” taking the glory of a project conceptualized by the youths of Ideato North.

As I perused the reactions with great excitement, in one of the popular Ideato Whatsapp groups, my mind veered off to a recent piece christened; ‘LIKE PETER OBI LIKE AKATAOBI IDEATO’.

While reminiscing on the referenced opinion article, I came to terms with the author’s postulations when critically juxtaposed with the scenario in Ideato North LGA. In the race for Nigeria’s next President, Mr. Peter Obi, ex-governor of Anambra State, is the only candidate with supporters devoid of party delineation. Nigerians want Mr. Obi as President for obvious reasons. This universal acceptance of the man behind the OBIdient movement, unarguably, did not foreclose the importance of consultations.

Dear reader, you will agree with me that Mr. Peter Obi has been very busy, traversing the nooks and crannies of the country in search of more supporters, not necessarily hinging his hope on such individuals, but to give honour to whom is due. Mr. Obi has reached out to past Nigerian Presidents and Heads of State, to garner advices and encouragement. This move is not out of place.

Ditto to Akataobi Ideato. It’s no longer news that Hon. Ugboaja Victor Chinedu is the topmost contender in the race for Barr. Arthur Egwim’s job. He is, undoubtedly, the most favoured, particularly, by the youths of the area. And the youths of Ideato North are poised to fight it out with whoever that decides to challenge them on this. As contagious as the youths’ support for Akataobi is, the entire landscape, and households, now bears the colours and sing Akataobi choruses.

Again, this is not enough to treat political elders with contempt. Akataobi, naturally, is a very humble fellow, who never relegates anybody created by God, how much more disdaining a man sitting on a seat he wants to occupy.

Akataobi has received endorsements from past and present political leaders in Ideato North. Even traditional rulers and renowned business moguls who would not want their names in print, have also given their blessings. But no news was made out of those endorsements.

Now, one would want to ask the rationale behind the reactions that trailed Barr. Arthur Egwim’s stamping his seal on Akataobi’s aspiration to succeed him.

Firstly, Barr. Egwim is a serving legislator, a firebrand one for that matter, and has a name that makes news. Secondly, the honourable member is the highest political office holder in the LGA, and should be consulted by any free minded seeker of political office in the area.

Then, thirdly, Akataobi, we all know, played roles that would not be forgotten in a hurry by Barr. Egwim, towards the political successes recorded by the Isiokpo-born lawmaker.

Therefore, it would be absurd and unlike Hon. Ugboaja I know, to circumvent the person of Barr. Egwim, probably because of familiarity, and forget to do what is needful. Akataobi gave what Barr. Egwim deserved and got what he wanted. Akataobi has no godfather. In his words on one occasion; “My godfathers and godmothers are the youths of Ideato North”.

However, I would not lose sight of the fact that most people who reacted were on personal vendetta mission against the lawmaker. Possibly, because Barr. Egwim is yet to meet their “expectations”. To these my brothers, I want to draw your attention to the fact that imperfection is synonymous with mortals. Calm down great folks, as what goes around must definitely come around.

Finally, I want to solicit the understanding of Akataobi’s opponents especially, those who sought Barr. Egwim’s endorsement to no avail, to throw in the towel and work with the APGA candidate. Barr. Egwim went for the man who can do the job. All that is important is to move Ideato North forward.

Igbos Would Be President After Me In The Next 8 years – 76 year Old Atiku Says

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has said the Igbos can only become President after he must have completed his tenure.

Atiku also vowed to prioritize developmental projects in Southeast and other regions when elected, saying that any project in any State is a favour to Nigeria.

Atiku, who was addressing Southeast PDP stakeholders in Enugu on Tuesday, said: “I am the stepping stone for Igbos to become President of Nigeria”.

The PDP candidate, who maintained that he would win the 2023 presidential polls, said his great relationship with the Igbos would continue until they assume the presidency after his tenure.

“I’ve had close relationship with the Igbos and this influenced my choices of Senator Ben Obi and Mr. Peter Obi as my running mates in my two previous outings as presidential candidate. Again, I have chosen another great Igbo here (Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa) for the third time as my running mate.

“I have three Igbo children and I am saying this for the very first time in public. So, my relationship with Ndigbo did not start today,” Atiku said.

While promising to priortise projects in Southeast, Atiku took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress(APC)-led administration for segregating some parts of the country with the paucity of projects.

“The second Niger bridge in Onitsha is not a favour to the Southeast, rather it is or should be seen as a favour to Nigeria. This is because it is not only the people of the Southeast that use the bridge,” Atiku said.

He also expressed concern over the ongoing sit-at-home in the region which he said had dealt a big blow to the economy of the region and the country at large, calling on elders in the region to speak out against it.

He said his administration would pay close attention to tackling insecurity, economic and other challenges bedeviling the country.

Tinubu’s Attempt To Counter Obi’s Massive Rallies Flops After Allegedly Gulping Over 500 Million Naira To Organise

Taiwo Okorowu. Abuja

Desperate to counter Peter Obi’s rising popularity, the Bola Tinubu campaign has called for a solidarity rally in Abuja, where they expected to shut down the entire Abuja city with the massive funds said to have been invested in the rally. However, pictures coming from sources at the venue of the solidarity show that the rally has been a massive flop.

Inside sources said that the Tinubu Campaign had mandated all State and zonal coordinators, to hire some youths who would participate in the rally. These State coordinators who are mostly incumbent governors and gubernatorial candidates of the Party in the States were said to have doled out millions of Naira to the youth structure of the Party in the various States while the Campaign Organisation provided branded t-shirts and other campaign materials. The enormous resources said to have been mapped out for the rally is seen by many campaign planners as a waste, giving that the turnout was very poor.

According to a member of the Campaign Team who spoke on condition of anonymity; “Our aim was to counter Obi’s massive rallies across the country, but this turnout is disappointing, considering that participants came from the 36 States of the Federation. The monies invested into the rally is at most, a waste.”

An observer who is monitoring the rally said that it was easy to observe the “impassive and detached” involvement of the few people who turned up for the rally.

“The difference is clear. This is a nationwide rally, people came from the 36 States of the Federation to converge on the FCT for a rally, yet they look like a trickle when compared to the city-based rallies organised by Peter Obi’s supporters. You can also observe the lack of genuine interest by most of the participants, unlike at Peter Obi’s rallies where you feel the passion and genuine interest in what is happening. Most of those who are here leave you in no doubt that they are contractors who are at the event for the money they were paid or promised.”

The INEC ban on election campaigns has been officially lifted today for presidential and National Assembly contestants and more fireworks are expected from different political Parties. Curiously, while the two other major political Parties have rolled out their programs and are already moving around for campaign related events, the whereabouts of the APC Presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains a mystery.

Press Release: Ihedioha Respects Plurality Of Opinion And Choices

PRESS RELEASE

IHEDIOHA RESPECTS PLURALITY OF OPINION AND CHOICES

Few days ago, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, on the invitation of his kinsmen, was in Accra, Ghana to celebrate this year’s Iri Ji festival with the Mbaise community in that country.

As a founding member and one of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, he seized the opportunity of that visit to address PDP issues nationally but particularly in Imo State and assuage the anxiety of the members of his party who have been apprehensive of the developments within the party.

In doing so, he decried what at best is the insouciant attitude and worse, the outright sabotage of some acclaimed party leaders who are engaging in acts that are inimical to the success of the PDP, especially in the Southeast by working in cahoots with the other parties. He was only talking about members of his own political party.

For clarity purposes, His Excellency, neither referred to members of any other political party, especially the Labour Party as saboteurs. He only spoke in the context of the PDP and the emphasis was on the need for members of his party to remain consistent and committed.

It is inconceivable that he will refer to anybody who is supporting Mr. Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, his long time friend, with whom he shares close political affinity and has utmost respect for, as a saboteur.

It is unfortunate that his well-intentioned speech which addressed the specific issue of happenings within his own political party was, again, manipulated by fifth columnists to suit their mischievous scheme of bringing him on a collision with Mr. Peter Obi, whose unwavering political philosophy of “Taking Back Nigeria” from the draconian stranglehold of the failed ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, he wholeheartedly shares.

His Excellency respects the aspirations and passion of members of other political parties, even as he remains committed to the cause of his own political party and it is not in his character to cast aspersions on those who hold contrary political opinion.

Court Declares Machina APC North Senatorial Candidate

The Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu has ordered the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

to recognise Bashir Machina as the candidate for Yobe North senatorial candidate.

Justice Fadima Murtala Aminu ordered the APC to forward the name of Machina to INEC as the authentic winner of the primary, which was held on the 28/05/2022.

The judge described the primary election where Senate President

Ahmad Lawan emerged as the candidate as “phantom”

I Am The Ordained Homos*xual That God Loves – Gay British-Nigerian Cleric Celebrates Priesthood Anniversary

The openly gay cleric took to his social media page to celebrate his second anniversary as an Anglican priest.

The cleric, who described himself as the “ordained homos*xual that God loves” took to Instagram on Monday, September 26, to share his ”gruelling journey to priesthood; the trials, media attack, emotional, psychological abuse, racism and homophobia he faced for many years.”

“Today, I celebrate with thanksgiving my second anniversary to Anglican priesthood,” he wrote.

“Too often we wait on God in expectation. We are forced to wait for our own safety and forced to wait because there is danger and harmful elements in the way. We are forced to wait for our own maturity.

British-Nigerian priest, Jide Macaulay is in celebratory mood.

Some things are settled by God a long time ago, we must learn to wait. I learnt to wait on God even at times when I doubted and was mad at God.

I have so much faith in God who never changes their mind in matters concerning me.

When I was ordained deacon in 2013, I was faced with barrages of hatred from within and outside the church. The media in my home country Nigeria vilified me and exposed me to dangers that I never anticipated. I have not returned to the country since 2012.

After the diaconate, it’s expected priesthood would have been the following year. But many events happened that caused me to step aside from my ministerial post at the time. My mother had died about 6 weeks after my ordination and the sorrow of her loss was too intense for me

I was in a difficult situation for several years, going through the wilderness of anxieties and facing many attacks I describe as spiritual darkness, religious abuse and wickedness in high places. I had developed chronic anxieties and depression, leading to high blood pressure.

I had faced years of racism, xenophobia, malicious acts, homophobia and stigmatisation by the Christian communities I trusted. But in all I laid it at the feet of Jesus in my lamentation.

The attacks were not just by strangers, who called for me to be executed, the death threats offline, online and in the media. But also some Christians, some Anglicans, family members attacked me verbally , emotionally and psychologically, they did so much to torment me and do everything to destroy me.

Each time I turned to the church at both parish and diocesan level, I was denied, silenced, the rejection was et tu brute.

I am the ordained homos3xual that God loves. This might be difficult for many but it’s been the joy of my life to serve God.

In all of this God is faithful. I am thankful that I surrounded myself with people who reminded me of my worth and validated my existence and ministry.

Today, is not about regrets but a reminder that the stones the builders rejected proudly becomes the cornerstone.

Congrats Jide for your journey to priesthood. Happy 2nd anniversary.”

Chelsea Legend John Mikel Obi Has Today Officially Announced His Retirement From Football.

The Nigerian, who played a key role as the Blues secured a first Champions League trophy in 2012, made the announcement on his personal Instagram account having most recently been with Kuwait SC.

Having given the Blues over a decade of service after signing as a fresh-faced 19 year-old, the midfielder lifted every major honour, which included two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Europa League, among others. He clocked up a mammoth 372 appearances in a Chelsea shirt.

Mikel also turned out in England in recent years for Middlesbrough and Stoke City in the Championship and released the following on his Instagram page on Tuesday afternoon…

‘There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end”, and for my professional football career, that day is today,’ the post reads.

‘I look back at the past 20 years of my career, and I must say that I am very satisfied with all that I was able to achieve and more importantly the human it has helped shape.

Anybody Supporting Peter Obi Is A Saboteur (video) -Ihedioha

Social media since early morning of today 27th September, 2022 has been jittering over a statement attributed to the former Deputy Speaker of the Federal House Of Assembly Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, it was quoted that the mbaise born politicians was heard and viewed in video purpoted to be in Ghana saying that “Anybody Supporting Mr. Peter Obi the presidential candidate of the Labour Party is a saboteur.

Video: https://youtu.be/WBRSC-ahSKs

That president should come to the southeast after Atiku most have finished his tenure, this statement didn’t go down well with the people especially the Imo people who suffered and cast their vote for him in 2019 as they condemned the statement.

Some of the comments on social media reads: “You not going to win election again in Imo State”, “we have heard you, we are waiting for you”, “you are a betrayal among other things”, it will be recalled that a couple weeks ago there was a rumor that Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha said he cannot support Peter Obi and that he will not win election, but it countered that he never made such statement.

People are surprised that a man like Ihedioha could boldly say a thing like this against a man that stood by him during the 2019 election.

Is Ihedioha Under Pressure? (video)

ONWUASOANYA FCC JONES

Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha is easily one of the most restrained in speech and action, when you talk about Nigerian politicians of his generation. He is a planner and an executor. He is one of the politicians that can invest any amount of money in getting his strategies right, without bothering about so much noise. Ihedioha is also always sensitive about political moods of the time.

This is why I found it difficult accepting that he did say what he is being quoted as saying in the video recorded of him in Ghana. I could have easily gone on to accept the narrative that the event was in 2019, but I think he said what he said recently, and that’s not good enough.

The former Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives might just be trying to be a good Party man. It could also be that he is deeply convinced that the Igbo’s best chance at having the right political deal at this time is having an Atiku as the next President of Nigeria. I would have come out fiercely in his defence if someone had harassed him merely because he holds such opinions and stated them, but I couldn’t swallow the bile in me over his statement that any Igbo man who is not supporting Atiku Abubakar is a “saboteur”. I didn’t believe that he could say something like that. I had to go to a very quiet place, fixed my earphones and listened again. And all that could come to my mind after confirming that he actually made those statements is; “Who has cast a spell on our own Ihedioha?

As someone whom I know to be very knowledgeable about world politics and current affairs, I didn’t expect him to still advance such notion as Nigeria having only two political Parties. Nigeria has over 20 political Parties and three viable political Parties as long as the presidential election is concerned, and one “outside chancer” Party. Referring to Peter Obi’s supporters as saboteurs is the clearest demonstration of anti-people sentiment, and this is something I thought he wouldn’t allow himself to be associated with.

Just on Sunday, Georgio Meloni became the first woman to be elected PM of Italy, albeit riding on a strong alliance of ideologically varied political Parties. William Ruto rode on popular support to displace the ruling coalition supported by the incumbent and Liz Truss, against the permutations of the leaders and MPs of her Party won her Party’s leadership tussle. These are signs that things do not always go thr way it used to, politically.

If I may borrow the harshness of Obi’s tone and language, I will say that there are no bigger saboteurs than any Nigerian who is not supporting Peter Obi. But, I believe that everyone has a right to his or her choices and I will concede the right of anyone to support whoever he wishes, without harassing others who don’t see things from their point of view.

Chief Emeka Ihedioha has done enough for the PDP and does not need to bend backwards in order to prove his loyalty to that Party of corruption and insensitivity. If anyone is blackmailing him to the top echelon of the Party, as an Obidient at night and Atiku in the morning, he should tell that person to go to hellfire. Ihedioha does not have anything to prove anymore, as long as his loyalty to the PDP is concerned and if the PDP leadership or any cabal within that Party doubts his loyalty, then, he should know that the Party doesn’t recognize his efforts, and there is nothing he will do to please them.

Peter Obi Should Happen Else No One Knows What Will Happen

ONWUASOANYA FCC JONES

All revolutions are dismissed by beneficiaries of the establishment as a non-starter until they are swept off their feet.

This is Nigeria’s best chance to peacefully avert a major disaster. Nigerians are dissatisfied with how the system is being run. Every Nigerian who has a business, who earns legitimate income and who pays bills is saddened and the frustration has got to its hilt. It is Peter Obi’s candidature that has doused the tension and helped millions of frustrated citizens trudge on.

I do three major businesses, and I can share my own experience about the impact of worsening economic situation on my businesses.

As a filmmaker, purchasing basic equipment has become a big problem. Not necessarily because the prices of these equipment have gone up, but because the exchange rate continues to crash. A set of lens for my cameras which is 3000 dollars, remains 3000 dollars, but the problem is that barely two years ago, 3000 dollars was barely 1,080,000 but today the same 3000 dollars is about 2,130,000 Naira. In the Association of Movie Producers WhatsApp group, it is lamentation galore over the cost of making films and to show you how insensitive the Nigerian system is, the Censors Board increased their fees, just suddenly.

When I started my farm business in a larger scale last year, Day Old Chicks were between 260-360 Naira depending on the hatchery you stock. A bag of Nutria Feed was a little above 7000 Naira. Today, Day Old Chicks is between 750 to 820 Naira. A bag of Nutria Feed is from 10,400 Naira for large quantity buyers like us.

Just two years ago, most of the binders and thickeners I use for my paint production have increased by over 100 percent in the last two years and there is no hope in sight that the prices will come down.

Everyday, small businesses are closing down. People are losing their jobs, those who can are trooping out of Nigeria. Go to the international wing of either Lagos or Abuja airports and you will be shocked at the number of people running away from this country everyday.

Bills are piling up. Cost of living is suffocating. For low income earners like us who have a large family, the pressure is more. For my four kids who are in school, my basic fees for them every term is above One Million Naira. You can’t maintain a family with less than 400,000 Naira monthly. And that is if you are very conservative. It is a lot more. You haven’t talked about those who have extended dependents.

Go into the streets of Kano, Abuja, Katsina, the feeling is the same. Everyone knows that the political class has failed. It doesn’t matter if you are Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Ijaw, Tiv or Igbo. There is a consensus that things need to be done differently or this country will collapse. We are hanging on the edge and it doesn’t matter how much you pretend about it.

My dear fellow Nigerian, Peter Obi has to happen or we forget about this place. That’s the truth, as sad as it is. Anyone who loves Nigeria and has a few investments he cherishes has to key in and support this revolution to work.

It doesn’t matter if you are in Party A, B or C. You will most likely not have a Party to run to if Nigerians are pushed to a point where they have to take out their frustration on the system. They won’t care about death, because for most of them, they are already dead and rotten. It’s just skeletons walking and they won’t mind setting that skeleton ablaze.

2023 Election: Egwim Endorses Akataobi For State Assembly Seat

As intrigues heighten for the next representative for Ideato North State Constituency in Imo House Assembly come 2023, the incumbent, Barr. Arthur Egwim has endorsed Hon. Ugboaja Victor Chinedu (Akataobi Ideato), as successor.

Barr. Egwim, while unveiling Akataobi to the coordinators of his structures and political leaders in the Constituency, Tuesday in Owerri, said he vowed not to support any candidate who is bereft of the art of legislation and people oriented representation hence, the choice of Akataobi.

He explained that Akataobi “has adequately paid his dues to the good people of Ideato North, not just as a grassroots politician, but as a community leader with enviable silverlinings to his credit”. The lawmaker stated that his decision to hand over to Akataobi was not his per se, but that of the critical stakeholders in the area after an exhaustive consultation.

According to him, “I did consult with my constituents before today’s open declaration and I want you to take the good news home to your wards, families and communities”. Barr. Egwim assured that the victory of Akataobi at the polls was no longer an issue for conjecture. He pointed out that a simple opinion sampling in Ideato North LGA would indicate that Hon. Ugboaja has already dusted other contenders of the seat.

Barr. Egwim further stated: “I want to use this opportunity to call on all of you present here today, to emulate our brother and friend, Akataobi, and take investing in fellow human beings as a way of life; Akataobi’s altruistic lifestyle is paying off today because his benevolence was not selfishly motivated. He extended unfeigned love to many not expecting anything in return, not even with the slightest premonition that he would be running for an elective position at a time like this; that’s why it’s often said that it’s good to be good”.

In his reaction, Akataobi was effusive with praises for Barr. Egwim for raising the bar of state Assembly representation in the Constituency. He expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for considering him worthy to step into his big shoes, assuring that he would not disappoint him and the people of Ideato North LGA.

Toll Reform In The Interest Of Transport Operators And Commuters -Nwosu

Awka the State capital witnessed days of another unexpected protest by tricycle (keke) and shuttle bus drivers. This came as a surprise to many who are aware that government had severally engaged all the transport unions in Anambra State to ensure that affordable dues are paid to the government instead of touts who are holding these drivers hostage by collecting illegal fees that are not remitted to government’s coffers.

According to the Commissioner Of Information Sir Paul Nwosu, the government’s overhaul of the tolling system is actually meant for the drivers and sundry transport owners to pay reduced fees directly to the government instead of paying exorbitant monies to the underhand middlemen who end up cheating transport owners and their drivers.

It’s indeed tragic that after many months of engagement with the transport unions on how the new payment arrangement will benefit the drivers and commuters, the keke and shuttle bus drivers still allowed themselves to be manipulated to go on strike.

It is disheartening to note that after the series of meetings and subsequent mutual understanding with the government of Anambra State to pay the reduced monthly tolls; these operators have over the months refused to pay. It was as a result of their non-compliance that prompted the Anambra State Joint Enforcement Team (ANJET) to move in to ensure compliance. While a few went to pay at the designated locations and collected their vehicles, others who are under the grips of the influential park Dons refused to pay and instead resorted to protests and ruthlessly enforced it among their law abiding colleagues, disrupting commercial activities in Awka and its environ.

The curious thing about the whole matter is that while this crisis persisted, the so-called leaders of the unions were nowhere in sight and could not be reached. All of these points to the fact that it’s either the leadership is weak or complicit in the riotous actions that virtually crippled transportation for days. The situation became clearer when government invited the operators to Dr Alex Ekwueme Square on Saturday for another round of engagement. Following the dissatisfaction they openly expressed against the leaders of their unions, they were given the opportunity to directly nominate representatives who would dialogue with government once again.

For want of what to say some of those who have been instigated to resist the reform have embarked on all kinds of campaign of falsehood to justify why they will not pay. They lied that government did not provide POS for payment as they were promised, but this is not true. Anambra Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has 234 agents with POSs spread across 74 locations in the State where they can make payments. Another insignificant few claimed that they paid for identity cards and stickers but were not given up till this moment. This again is untrue because AIRS had since acquired the equipment to capture every payee and issue cards and stickers on the spot.

The joint agreement between the government and operators of keke and shuttle bus is that they will pay N600 and N1000 daily which would amount to N18, 000 and 30,000 monthly tolls respectively but government in its humanness granted a Saturday and Sunday discounts that eventually pegged what they will pay at N15, 000 and N25, 000 monthly. It is important to note that this is a far cry from the N2,500 and N3,500 they paid daily which adds up to N75,000 and N105,000 monthly. The difference is remarkably incomparable; and it has become necessary for Ndi Anambra to know that it is just a few greedy elements who have exploited and billed the system to line their individual pockets that have continued to misinform and instigate this unwarranted crises.

It is key to note at this point that the collected tolls will augment governments revenue with which it could repair roads which transporters whine about and construct new ones where there are none. Already, government has flagged off the construction of 20 new roads and presently carrying out over a dozen interventions to rehabilitate failed sections of existing ones. These are the services that the self-centred middlemen cannot provide.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has repeatedly stated that his government will be transparent in spending every Kobo that comes in as revenue. Under his watch, Ndi Anambra will see their legitimate taxes, levies and tolls translate into tangible developments that will transform Anambra State into a more liveable, pleasurable and prosperous one.

According to the Imo State POWA chairperson, she decided to embark on this huge and expensive project because, she understands the significance of quality healthcare delivery for the major role it plays in the the society. More so, she understands the trauma persons living with sickle cell and their families pass through in our today society.

Guest speaker and awardee, Mrs Aisha Edward Maduagwu, National Coordinator, Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder and the Director, Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home Agulu, Anambra State, shared some touching experiences of herself as a sickle cell carrier. She recalled the anxieties always clouding families and homes where there are sickle cell patients, while calling on those in position of authority to do more to save the ugly situation. She observed that genotype education and sensitization had become a sinequanon to the eradication of sickle cell disease, and governments at different levels had been mandated by the 63rd session of the United Nations Assembly, to recognize sickle cell disease as a public health problem.

Mrs Maduagwu further decried the lackadaisical attitudes of some hospitals in the treatment and management of sickle cell patients, noting that exploitations by these medical cabals are rife especially in the rural areas. She bemoaned the fate of some undergraduates as live-in couples, still oblivious of the dangers and implications of their cohabitations untill they start birthing sickle cell children.

“She emphasised the need for a legal framework that will drive the essential mechanisms for sickle cell eradication should be upheld in every strata of government administration, law enforcement agents should also ensure compliance with the sickle cell law where it is necessary and needed”.

On her glaring achievements on sickle cell advocacy spanning over a decade, Mrs Aisha Edward Maduagwu was honored with an ambassadorial status by the chairperson of POWA Imo State, to further take the message on sickle cell disease and eradication down to every corner of the federation, and to collaborate with other POWA state chapters, and harp on the importance of genotype knowledge and certification of intending couples before they can go ahead with their marriage plans.

Dignitaries who spoke at the event includes the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Hajara Baba Alkali, ably represented by Ezinwanyi Princess Udom, the south east/south south coordinator of POWA multi-purpose cooperative, who praised the industriousness and diligence of Hajiya Habiba Barde, in putting the collective interest of POWA first and above personal interests, and for building strong legacies that will outlive her stay in Imo State command.

Other Highlights of the event includes; presentation of awards to well deserved dignitaries, side attractions and fun-filled entertainments that thrilled all the worthy invited guests.

Today In History 25th September 1967 Emmanuel Ifeajuna Was Executed

The tragic story of the first Black African gold medallist who was executed by firing squad

His involvement in politics and later military activities have made many people forget that Emmanuel Ifeajuna was the first ever black African to win a gold medal.

Born in Nigeria in 1935, Ifeajuna was a high jumper, a skill he learnt while still in school. He participated in national competitions including the 1954 Nigerian Athletics Championships that saw him establish his name as a prolific high jumper. After jumping 6 foot 5.5 inches (1.97 m) at this competition, he qualified to represent his country at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

While in Vancouver where the competition took place, Ifeajuna broke both the competition and the British Empire records in high jump. He did all this without his right shoe. He was considered a hero and received such a grand welcome, complete with a parade when he returned to Nigeria after the competition. He became such a celebrity that his photo was used on the cover of exercise books in Nigeria.

He, however, stopped training in the game and opted to go back to school. He joined the University College of Ibadan, where he became involved in student politics and became friends with some of Nigeria’s biggest poets, J.P Clark and Christopher Okigbo. Ifeajuna would organise a number of protests, but would not participate in many of them according to the accounts of his friends and schoolmates.

After completing his university studies, he went to Abeokuta to teach but left the profession in 1960 to join the military. Because of his education, Ifeajuna rose the ranks to become a Major in 1966.

Dissatisfied with how the government was running affairs after independence, Ifeajuna became a plotter of Nigeria’s bloodiest coup together with Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, Timothy Onwuatuegwu, Chris Anuforo, Don Okafor, Adewale Ademoyega and Humphrey Chukwuka.

It is recorded that Ifeajuna not only arrested then-Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (who later died in detention) but also killed other army officials including Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari, who had come to him for help and Lieutenant Colonel Abogo Largema.

The coup was prevented by Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, who later took over power to become the first military head of state. Following the failure of the coup, Ifeajuna had no choice but to run away. With the help of his friends, he travelled to Benin and headed to Ghana where he was welcomed by Kwame Nkrumah.

His stay in Ghana was shortlived as Nkrumah’s government would be overthrown shortly afterwards. He returned to Nigeria amid assurances from Emeka Ojukwu, who would later become the leader of the Republic of Biafra, that his life was not at risk.

Ifeajuna got back into the military and became part of the Biafran Army. However, Ojukwu would accuse Ifeajuna and other top military leaders of treason in 1967. He claimed that Ifeajuna and his mates were busy negotiating with Nigeria via the British and wanted to overthrow him and take power for themselves.

In a hastily-conducted trial, Ifeajuna was sentenced to death by firing squad and was executed on September 25, 1967. According to reports, his last words were:

You may kill me now, but I am afraid it is too late. I am sorry for you all because it won’t be long before they get all of you. The Nigerians are already in your midst.”

Compared to most of the 1966 coup planners and the leaders of the Biafran revolution, Ifeajuna has not been featured prominently in Nigerian history.

He left behind an unpublished manuscript about the January 1966 coup that caught the attention of many people who believed that it would reveal some facts about the event.

Peter Obi: Why Past Nigerian Rulers, Elder Statesmen Must Support This Revolution

ONWUASOANYA FCC JONES

There are few regimes in the world that is as suppressive as the Iranian regime, and very few observers and commentators on international politics would expect the citizens of such a draconian government to gather the right courage to stand up against their government, which has very little regard for human rights. And for decades ordinary Iranians went about their lives like everything was alright, while bottling up great anger and disaffection but never really having the guts to express them. Yes, people did protest, strikes did happen, but never to the extent that could really shake up things in Ayatollah Khomeini’s despotic Islamic Republic.

But all that changed with the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22 year old girl whom the Police accused of dressing indecently, arrested her and clamped her in detention, where she was said to have been manhandled badly. But was Mahsa Amini the first Iranian to suffer unjust detention or to die in police custody? Not at all.

Since 1979 when the Islamists toppled the Iranian monarchy, ordinary Iranians have literally lived in abject fear and “enslavement” with the women and young girls being the worst affected. Any little attempt by the citizens to protest ill-treatment by the oppressive regime is met with the strongest military rebuke, with dead bodies piling up dangerously and thousands put away in different prisons across the country.

Today, the people of Iran; youths, women and people from different age and tribal backgrounds are risking it all to send a strong message of rebuttal against the oppressive and corrupt regime. I do not know how this whole thing will end, but I know that every major change in history is triggered by very little and seemingly insignificant acts or even accidents.

Nigeria is one of the most fortunate countries in the world. We have been given different opportunities to get our acts together but at each turn the political leadership bungles it. We have survived a civil war, survived uncountable mass protests and ethnic clashes and just recently, the #EndSars protest gave us an idea of what a mass revolt could look like. The Federal government may delude itself all it wants into believing that it’s military crushed that protest, but we know that a nation with a mostly dissatisfied citizenry is merely hanging on borrowed time.

Since the EndSars protest was suspended, there have been more Nigerians who are disillusioned with what is happening in the country. Life has got harder and more young people are seeing reasons to join any action that will punish “those who have made our lives difficult.”

Outside President Goodluck Jonathan, every other living past Nigerian leader is a military veteran and everyone of them saw the war and fully appreciate how inflaming another mass protest will look alike if it is allowed to happen.

The emergence of Peter Obi as a presidential candidate reignited hope in majority of Nigerians. Most of those who were ready to hit the streets in protest or even take up arms against the nation are beginning to see an opportunity for a peaceful, bloodless revolution. This is why you see millions of them using their hard-earned money to buy Peter Obi souvenirs, sponsor Labour Party related activities and join, freely, in mobilisation efforts across the country.

Nigerian past leaders and elder statesmen who are watching these incidents know what it portends for the nation if by any chance, this hope is dashed, especially, by what would apparently be an elitist conspiracy. Truth is, Nigeria may not survive it. I am an unrepentant believer in Nigeria, I will want Nigeria to just go on, no matter what, but I am a progressive realist. I do not deliberately delude myself.

I will not recommend that these elder statesmen use their influence to rig the system in favour of Peter Obi, but I think it would be the greatest service they will do to this nation if they bring their weight and influence to bear in ensuring that the dreams of ordinary Nigerians are not cut short. It is their responsibility to save Nigeria at this critical time.

Like it is in Iran, many Iranians who are out on the street protesting against the Ayatollah dictatorship are aware that they may not return home alive or won’t be free for a long time, but they have been so mistreated and have seen so much suffering that they don’t care again about what happens. It should actually be the prayer of everyone who truly wants the best for Nigeria that Nigerians are not pushed to the point where, like the Iranians, Sri Lankans, Tigrayans, etc, they feel that they have nothing to lose anymore.

MAY NIGERIA PREVAIL!

2023 Election, Any Plan To Rig It Against The Wish Of The Masses Will Spell Doom -HDC

My Observations, and My Reservation

Any plan to rig this 2023 Presidential Election against the wish of this massive youth movement all over the Country will cause doom in this Nation.

Today I was opportune to participate in the Abuja 5million man match rally for Peter Obi, and I could see thousands and millions of resilient young men and women ready to take back their Country, any attempt to manipulate their wish will not go down well in this Country.

I could see the energy
I could see the resilience
I could see the determination
I could see the commitment
I could see the readiness
And above all, I could see God at work in this movement.

My name is Divine Chike
I am fully Obidient

A New Nigeria is Possible come 2023!

Politics Of Conscience It Is Totally Unacceptable For Another Fulani Northern Man To Replace Buhari Fulani Northern Man After 8years In Office, In A Country Like Nigeria?

It is totally unacceptable for another Fulani Northern man to replace Buhari Fulani Northern man after 8years in office, in a Country like Nigeria

That is so unfair and that is so unjust.

The Power must rotate between the North and the South.

The North is finishing 8years, hence it is absolutely unjust for Atiku a Northern Fulani man warming up to take over again.
That is so unfair to the South especially to the SouthEast.

The crisis in PDP is not really about Ayu to resign, rather the Southern Leaders in PDP with conscience are struggling to wholeheartedly support Atiku a Northern Fulani man knowing fully well Buhari is also a Northern Fulani man finishing 8years in office.

Even if Ayu resigns today, still yet a good number of PDP Southern Leaders will work against Atiku.

It has become a conscience and moral thing to do, it has nothing to do with being a good Party man, it takes a selfish, self centered and a dead conscience individual from the South to support another Northern Fulani man after Buhari.

The fact is that some good conscience Northerners knows that the right thing to do in this 2023 Presidential Election is to support a Southerner, and that Southerner should be a man with competence, integrity, energy, capacity, tested and trusted, and there you have Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

I Will Champion Legislation To End SouthEast Marginalization -Charles Ahize

The Labour Party Senatorial candidate for Imo West District, Chief Charles Ahize has decried the marginalization of Nigeria in present day Nigeria and assured that when elected to the Senate in 2023, he will be at the vanguard of proposing and supporting legislative actions that will ensure equity and justice for Ndigbo and all Nigerians.

Speaking when he had an interactive meeting with some young doctors from Imo State who paid him a consultative meeting, he told the young doctors that his major inspiration for seeking to go to the Senate at this time is to do his best to save Nigeria, and according to him; “Saving Nigeria entails taking steps to entrench equity and justice in our governance structures.” He recalled how he financed the Nigerian Constitutional Conference because of the inclusion of rotational presidency in that Constitution.

“In the early 90s when there was a Constitutional Conference, I was approached by key politicians in the country, especially, those from the Southeast about an ongoing Constitutional Conference and I was most inspired to provide huge resources to support the proposal to make rotational presidency a Constitutional provision. I didn’t do this because I had anything personal to benefit, but because I believe in equity and justice. I know that the only thing that would strengthen our nationhood is for every ethnic group to be treated equally. Unfortunately, that proposal was blocked.”

Expressing his regrets over the challenges confronting Nigeria today, he argued that if the right laws had been put in place and if our political leaders had taken responsibility by ensuring that justice and fairness prevail, most of our challenges as a nation would have been avoided.

“I am not going to the Senate to make money or to get new connections. By God’s special grace, I am blessed with riches and contacts enough to last me a lifetime. But, beyond myself and my immediate family, what future would I be bequeathing to the upcoming generation of my Igbo brothers and Nigerians? Are we going to continue being treated like unwanted people in a country we love and have contributed enormously to its survival and sustenance? I won’t be fulfilled if I do not do my best to free the Southeast from political and economic emasculation, which she has been subjected to by successive federal administrations.”

Responding, Dr. Mandela Chuky, the leader of the delegation of doctors thanked the businessman for his forthrightness and sense of duty to youth development and mentorship, which span over thirty years. He praised him for his contributions to the strengthening of Labour Party in the Southeast and across Nigeria.

“The Obidients are proud of you and we are counting on your wide acceptability to deliver the Labour Party 100% across the Southeast.”

Tinubu Continues To Confirm His Disdain For Christianity

ONWUASOANYA FCC JONESWhen it was time to make consultations over who would be his running mate, the first insight came from a mosque. At a meeting between some Imams and Governor Ganduje of Kano State. It was there that Ganduje told the Imams that Tinubu had assured them that he was going to pick a Muslim as his running mate.

When it was time to pick key members of the National Working Committee of his Party, Tinubu and his Party didn’t show us pictures of a meeting where Christian clergy were consulted. When critical decisions affecting the Party and the presidency he is trying to grab will be taken, there won’t be Christians in the room. But, when it is time to show off a group of hired sycophants, Tinubu is fast to show us the pictures of some unrecognisable individuals wearing cloaks of Christian clergy.Tinubu is smart. He is not making a mistake with these things. He is intentionally ridiculing Christianity. He is rubbing it on our faces that; “Christians are easy to dominate”, that the “Christian clergy can be hired for two a penny.”During the presentation of his wannabe Commander-in-Chief running mate, he went to the parks and other places to hire thugs and dressed them in the cloaks of Bishops. That wasn’t a mistake. He did it intentionally to tell us to go to hell. He wanted to run it into our eyes that we are irrelevant.I do not care if Tinubu chooses 100% Muslims to make up his team. It is his right. But, I have a problem with the man constantly disrespecting Christianity. This is the same thing I would say of anyone treating Islam with disrespect. It is wrong. Every religion should be accorded the respect they deserve.I am not even a Churchgoer. In the African man’s understanding of Christianity, I may not qualify to fight for Christianity, because I can’t remember the last time I was in church, but I am speaking as a concerned Nigerian who knows how seriously my people take issues relating to their religious sensitivities.Tinubu is ridiculing Christianity. He should stop already. Let him go ahead and campaign with his Muslim-Muslim ticket. Nigerians who are convinced about the credibility of his person and his running mate will vote for them, but let him stop making Christianity look so cheap.

President Buhari Congratulates NDLEA Chairman, Gen.Marwa, On Drug Bust

President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday, congratulated the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd), on the recent very successful operation of the Agency leading to the smashing of an international drug syndicate and recovery of 1,855kilograms of cocaine.

In a telephone call to the Chairman of the anti-narcotics agency from New York where he is attending the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77), President Buhari said that the news of the recovery gladdens his heart.

“I deeply appreciate the work that you have put into the eradication of the drug menace. It gladdens my heart as I continue to follow the successes achieved under your leadership.

“You have demonstrated over and again that choosing you to lead this fight against wicked merchants of death whose sole aim is to endanger and truncate the future of our youth is a very good choice. Please keep up the good work.”

At a meeting later with members of his delegation, the President said, “Buba Marwa is doing well. Two tonnes of cocaine, that’s a haul.”

The NDLEA had announced the “highest cocaine seizure” worth over 278 million dollars and arrest of drug barons including a foreigner in a major operation lasting two days across different locations in Lagos.

President Buhari Bid Farewell To UNGA, Restates Adherence To Constitutional Term Limit, Says Nigeria Is Promoting Democracy, Rule Of Law In West Africa.

Wednesday in New York vowed to entrench a process of free, fair, transparent and credible elections through which Nigerians elect leaders of their choice.

In his farewell speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as President, he told the 77th session that next year, there would be a new face speaking for Nigeria from the podium of the Assembly Hall.

The President used his speech to strongly reiterate his commitment to constitutional term limits and Nigeria’s effort to promote rule of law and democracy in West Africa, citing the country’s support to The Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Chad during their political impasse.

He said: ”We believe in the sanctity of constitutional term limits and we have steadfastly adhered to it in Nigeria. We have seen the corrosive impact on values when leaders elsewhere seek to change the rules to stay on in power.

”Indeed, we are now preparing for general elections in Nigeria next February. At the 78th UNGA, there will be a new face at this podium speaking for Nigeria.

”Ours is a vast country strengthened by its diversity and its common values of hard work, enduring faith and a sense of community.

”We have invested heavily to strengthen our framework for free and fair elections. I thank our partners for all the support that they have provided our election institutions.

”As President, I have set the goal that one of the enduring legacies I would like to leave is to entrench a process of free, fair and transparent and credible elections through which Nigerians elect leaders of their choice.”

Highlighting support for democracy in the sub-region, President Buhari said in The Gambia, Nigeria helped guarantee the first democratic transition since independence and stood by the democratically elected Government in Guinea-Bissau when it faced mutiny.

He added that following the tragic death of President Idris Deby Itno of Chad in the battlefield, Nigeria joined forces with its other neighbours and international partners to stabilize the country and encourage the peaceful transition to democracy, a process which is ongoing.

”Democracy is an idea that crosses time and borders. Certainly, democracy does have its limitations.

”The wheels of democracy turn slowly. It can demand compromises that dilute decisions.

”Sometimes, it bends too much to special interests that exercise influence, not always for the general good, in a manner disproportionate to their numbers.

”But it has been my experience that a democratic culture provides a Government with the legitimacy it needs to deliver positive change,” he said.

Recalling that the first time he could have addressed the Assembly was in 1984, as Military Head of State of Nigeria, President Buhari said it was a great privilege to personally address the Assembly, thirty-one years later, in 2015, ”as the democratically elected President of my country.”

”As I approach the end of my second and final four-year term, I am reminded of how much has changed in Nigeria, in Africa, and in the world, and yet, how some challenges remain,” he said in the address, which also focused on pressing international issues including the consequences of the war in Ukraine, Climate Change, malignant use of technology, debt service suspension, among others.

On the war in Ukraine, the Nigerian leader warned that the danger of escalation further justifies Nigeria’s resolute calls for a nuclear-free world and a universal Arms Trade Treaty, which are necessary measures to prevent global human disasters.

He demanded that world leaders must find quick means to reach consensus on the nuclear non-proliferation Treaty with related commitments by nuclear weapon states.

He said that the war would have adverse consequences on all, hindering the capacity of the international community to work together to resolve conflicts elsewhere, especially in Africa, the Middle-East and Asia:

”Indeed, the ongoing war in Ukraine is making it more difficult to tackle the perennial issues that feature each year in the deliberations of this Assembly, such as nuclear disarmament, the right of the Rohingya refugees to return to their homes in Myanmar, and the Palestinians’ legitimate aspirations for statehood and reduction of inequalities within and amongst nations.”

In the context of challenges that have come so sharply into focus in recent years and months, President Buhari emphasized the call by Nigeria and many other Member-States for the reform of the Security Council and other UN Agencies, saying ‘‘CHANGE IS LONG OVERDUE.’’

”We need more effective and representative structures to meet today’s demands that have since outgrown a system designed for the very different world that prevailed at its foundation in 1945.”

On the use of technology, President Buhari called attention to the use of social media to spread hate speech and divisive information, urging world leaders that in confronting these challenges they must come together to defend freedom of speech and uphold other values they cherish.

”We must continue to work for a common standard that balances rights with responsibilities to keep the most vulnerable from harm and help strengthen and enrich communities.

”Efforts to protect communities from the scourge of disinformation and misinformation must also be matched with efforts to reduce inequalities and restore hope to our poorer and most vulnerable of our communities as a means to stem the many socio-economic conflict drivers with which we are faced,” he said.

The President asserted that while social media is helpful in strengthening the foundations of society and common values, at its worst, it is a corrosive digital version of the mob, bristling with intolerance and division.

He noted that a key feature of the last decade has been the growing partnership between states and the increasingly influential non-state actors.

”There was a time when the most important event at this Assembly was the speech by the world’s most powerful leaders.

”Now a Tweet or Instagram post by an influencer on social or environmental issues may have greater impact.

”When I began my tenure as President in 2015, distinctions were drawn between the experience of poorer countries and those apparently better able to manage the avalanche of unfiltered information.

”Nigeria has had many unsavoury experiences with hate speech and divisive disinformation. Increasingly, we also see that many countries face the same challenge. Clearly, data also know no borders,” he said.

President Buhari also called for outright debt cancellation for developing countries facing the most severe fiscal and liquidity challenges.

According to him, the multifaceted challenges facing most developing countries have placed a debilitating chokehold on their fiscal space, justifying the need to address the burden of unsustainable external debt by a global commitment to the expansion and extension of the Debt Service Suspension Initiative as well as outright cancellation.

On climate change, President Buhari expressed concern that Africa and other developing nations, which produce only a small proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to industrial economies, are the hardest hit by its consequences as seen in the sustained droughts in Somalia and floods of unprecedented severity in Pakistan.

”These and other climate-related occurrences are now sadly becoming widely commonplace in the developing world. We are, in effect, literally paying the price for policies that others pursue. This needs to change.”

The Nigeria leader said: ”At the Cop 26 in Glasgow last year, I did say that Nigeria was not asking for permission to make the same mistakes that others have made in creating the climate emergency.

”Fortunately, we now know what we can do to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and the related energy challenge. As a first step, we must all commit to releasing the financing and the technology to create a stable and affordable framework for energy transition.

”Development Financial Institutions must prioritise de-risking energy projects to improve access of renewable projects to credit facilities. There should be no countries ‘left behind’ in this equation.

”Rocketing energy costs worldwide are, in part, the product of conflict and supply disruptions to Europe and the Americas.”

The President said Nigeria expects UNGA 77 and the upcoming COP 27 to help galvanise the political will required to drive action towards the fulfilment of the various existing climate change initiatives.

In concluding his address from the ”famous podium”, the President conveyed his final reflection to the world body, urging leaders to uphold values of justice, honour, integrity, among others.

”We live in extraordinary times with interdependent challenges but enormous opportunities. The pace of change can seem bewildering, with sometimes a palpable and unsettling sense of uncertainty about our future.

”But if my years in public service have taught me anything, it is that we must keep faith with those values that endure.

”These include, but are not limited to such values as justice, honour, integrity, ceaseless endeavour, and partnership within and between nations.

”Our strongest moments have always been when we remain true to the basic principles of tolerance, community, and abiding commitment to peace and goodwill towards all.”

Full Statement Of President Buhari At The General Debate Of 77th Session Of The United Nations General Assembly

Protocol observed

On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I congratulate you on your well-deserved election as President of the 77th Session of this August Assembly. I assure you of the full support and cooperation of the Nigerian delegation during your tenure.

2. I commend your predecessor, H.E Abdullah Shahid for the many remarkable achievements of the General Assembly under his leadership during these challenging times.

3. May I also congratulate the Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres on his ceaseless and untiring efforts to promote peace, security and development, very much in line with his exalted role.

Mr. President,

4. The first time I could have addressed this August Assembly was in 1984, when I was the Military Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Thirty one years later, I had the great privilege to personally address the Assembly in 2015, as the democratically elected President of my country. As I approach the end of my second and final four-year term, I am reminded of how much has changed in Nigeria, in Africa, and in the world, and yet, how some challenges remain.

5. We are now more severely tested by these enduring and new global challenges, paramount among which are conflicts increasingly being driven by non-state actors, proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons, terrorism, violent extremism, malignant use of technology, climate change, irregular migration, and disparities in opportunities for improved standards of living.

6. Despite the challenging international environment, the United Nations has proved that it can be strong when the will of its members is harnessed for positive collective action. The guiding principles of this extraordinary institution is the promotion of peace and security, development and human rights. Latest in a chain of events challenging these principles is the Ukraine conflict which has already created strains that are perhaps unprecedented for a generation.

7. Such a conflict will have adverse consequences for us all, hindering our capacity to work together to resolve conflicts elsewhere, especially in Africa, the Middle-East and Asia. Indeed, the ongoing war in Ukraine is making it more difficult to tackle the perennial issues that feature each year in the deliberations of this Assembly, such as nuclear disarmament, the right of the Rohingya refugees to return to their homes in Myanmar, and the Palestinians’ legitimate aspirations for statehood and reduction of inequalities within and amongst nations.

8. The danger of escalation of the war in Ukraine further justifies Nigeria’s resolute calls for a nuclear-free world and a universal Arms Trade Treaty, which are also necessary measures to prevent global human disasters. In this regards we must find quick means to reach consensus on the Nuclear non-proliferation Treaty with related commitments by nuclear weapon states.

9. I remain firmly convinced that the challenges that have come so sharply into focus in recent years and months emphasize the call by Nigeria and many other Member-States for the reform of the Security Council and other UN Agencies. We need more effective and representative structures to meet today’s demands that have since outgrown a system designed for the very different world that prevailed at its foundation in 1945. CHANGE IS LONG OVERDUE.

Mr. President,

10. This is the first meeting we are having here in New York without the restrictions that characterised the last three years. The COVID-19 pandemic ripped across National borders like a toxic whirlwind, leaving in its wake a legacy of pain and loss.

11. Happily, we also witnessed an incredible level of innovation and creativity from those who devised treatments and vaccines. These laudable achievements were underpinned by partnerships and international cooperation. We have also seen the bravery, care, and endurance of health professionals at every corner of the globe.

12. I am happy to note that in Nigeria, our healthcare agencies were able to form effective local management and engaged international partnerships with multinational initiatives like COVAX and private groups like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. These efforts helped mitigate the impact of the pandemic and we were mercifully spared the images of overwhelmed hospitals, overworked healthcare personnel and high mortality which sadly we saw elsewhere.

13. With COVID-19, we saw very clearly how states tried to meet the challenge of a threat that could not be contained within national borders. The results were mixed; but at its best, cooperation among stakeholders was outstanding. It facilitated solutions that saved countless lives and eased the huge burden of human suffering.

14. That same theme of unilateralism and the promotion of national interest competing with the common cause in the face of an existential threat has been our recurring experience in recent times. In every address I have delivered to this august Assembly, I have dwelt on the issue of climate change, especially as it fuels conflicts and complicates food security.

15. Climate change reduces opportunity and prosperity which, in Africa, Latin America and some parts of Asia also contribute to transnational organized crimes.

16. As part of Nigeria’s efforts at achieving our Global Net-zero aspiration, the current Administration last year adopted a National Climate Change Strategy that aims to deliver climate change mitigation in a sustainable manner.

17. The measures we took at the national level also require climate justice. Africa and other developing nations produce only a small proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to industrial economies. Yet, we are the hardest hit by the consequences of climate change as we see in the sustained droughts in Somalia and floods of unprecedented severity in Pakistan.

18. These and other climate-related occurrences are now sadly becoming widely commonplace in the developing world. We are, in effect, literally paying the price for policies that others pursue. This needs to change.

19. At the Cop 26 in Glasgow last year, I did say that Nigeria was not asking for permission to make the same mistakes that others have made in creating the climate emergency.

20. Fortunately, we now know what we can do to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and the related energy challenge. As a first step, we must all commit to releasing the financing and the technology to create a stable and affordable framework for energy transition.

21. Development Financial Institutions must prioritise de-risking energy projects to improve access of renewable projects to credit facilities. There should be no countries “left behind” in this equation.

22. Rocketing energy costs worldwide are, in part, the product of conflict and supply disruptions to Europe and the Americas. Yet, we are all paying the price. It is, therefore, our expectation that this UNGA 77 and the upcoming COP 27 will help galvanise the political will required to drive action towards the fulfilment of the various existing climate change initiatives.

23. Another feature of the last decade has been the gowing partnership between states and the increasingly influential non-state actors. There was a time when the most important event at this Assembly was the speech by the world’s most powerful leaders. Now a Tweet or Instagram post by an influencer on social or environmental issues may have greater impact.

24. Technology offers us nearly limitless opportunities and sometimes runs ahead of the imagination of regulators and legislators. At its best, social media helps strengthen the foundations of our society and our common values. At its worst, it is a corrosive digital version of the mob, bristling with intolerance and division.

25. When I began my tenure as President in 2015, distinctions were drawn between the experience of poorer countries and those apparently better able to manage the avalanche of unfiltered information. Nigeria has had many unsavoury experiences with hate speech and divisive disinformation. Increasingly, we also see that many countries face the same challenge. Clearly, data also know no borders.

26. In confronting these challenges, we must also come together to defend freedom of speech, while upholding other values that we cherish. We must continue to work for a common standard that balances rights with responsibilities to keep the most vulnerable from harm and help strengthen and enrich communities.

27. Efforts to protect communities from the scourge of disinformation and misinformation must also be matched with efforts to reduce inequalities and restore hope to our poorer and most vulnerable of our communities as a means to stem the many socio-economic conflict drivers with which we are faced.

28. In spite of our efforts, humanitarian crises will continue to ravage some of our communities. Nigeria, therefore, implores our global partners to do more to complement our endeavours.

29. Indeed, the multifaceted challenges facing most developing countries have placed a debilitating chokehold on their fiscal space. This equally calls for the need to address the burden of unsustainable external debt by a global commitment to the expansion and extension of the Debt Service Suspension Initiative to countries facing fiscal and liquidity challenges as well as outright cancellation for countries facing the most severe challenges.

Mr. President, Your Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates,

30. Democracy is an idea that crosses time and borders. Certainly, democracy does have its limitations. The wheels of democracy turn slowly. It can demand compromises that dilute decisions. Sometimes, it bends too much to special interests that exercise influence, not always for the general good, in a manner disproportionate to their numbers. But it has been my experience that a democratic culture provides a Government with the legitimacy it needs to deliver positive change.

31. In Nigeria, not only have we worked to strengthen our democracy, but we have supported it and promoted the Rule of Law in our sub-region. In The Gambia, we helped guarantee the first democratic transition since independence. In Guinea-Bissau we stood by the democratically elected Government when it faced mutiny. And in the Republic of Chad, following the tragic death of its President, the late Idris Deby Itno in the battle field, we joined forces with its other neighbours and international partners to stabilize the country and encourage the peaceful transition to democracy, a process which is ongoing.

32. We believe in the sanctity of constitutional term limits and we have steadfastly adhered to it in Nigeria. We have seen the corrosive impact on values when leaders elsewhere seek to change the rules to stay on in power. Indeed, we now are preparing for general elections in Nigeria next February. At the 78th UNGA, there will be a new face at this podium speaking for Nigeria.

33. Ours is a vast country strengthened by its diversity and its common values of hard work, enduring faith and a sense of community. We have invested heavily to strengthen our framework for free and fair elections. I thank our partners for all the support that they have provided our election institutions.

34. As President, I have set the goal that one of the enduring legacies I would like to leave is to entrench a process of free, fair and transparent and credible elections through which Nigerians elect leaders of their choice.

Mr. President,

35. The multiple challenges that face us are truly interconnected and urgent, and your choice of this Session’s theme “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges” is apt. In keeping with our obligations as Member States of this noble Organisation, we all must do our utmost to work with you toward resolving them. In this regard, I reiterate my Delegation’s full and resolute cooperation.

36. Let me convey my final reflection from this famous podium. We live in extraordinary times with interdependent challenges but enormous opportunities. The pace of change can seem bewildering, with sometimes a palpable and unsettling sense of uncertainty about our future. But if my years in public service have taught me anything, it is that we must keep faith with those values that endure. These include, but are not limited to such values as justice, honour, integrity, ceaseless endeavour, and partnership within and between nations.

37. Our strongest moments have always been when we remain true to the basic principles of tolerance, community, and abiding commitment to peace and goodwill towards all.

I thank you all.

As Putin Finally Admits Defeat – Onwuasonya FCC Jones

The announcement, earlier today, of a full scale mobilization of the Russian Armed Forces, is the latest in a series of humiliating events that have trailed the ill-advised invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin and his Kremlin war hawks.

Putin had expected a less than 72 hours operation to oust Volodymyr Zelensky and install a Moscow leaning apologist as the Ukrainian Head of State, in a war he boastfully and deceitfully tagged a “Special Military Operation”. But after suffering series of unexpected defeats and disgraces by a resilient Ukrainian military, he has thrown in 100 times more than he envisaged into the war and yet, the battlefield is yet to shift to his favour.

In the last six months and counting, Russia has lost more of its generals and members of its Armed Forces than it has in any war since after the World War II, and in a flash of surprising counteroffensive just this month, the Ukrainian military have retaken more territories from the occupying bullies in just five days than Russia was able to gain in more than five months.

Russia had before now explored different desperate measures in order to take an edge in the war, this includes hiring mercenaries from Syria, Iran, North Korea. Recruiting prisoners with offer of good money and unconditional release from prison and other unconventional strategies aimed at shifting the balance of the battlefield to their own favour.

Putin’s failures in Ukraine is also exposing his weaknesses to the long suffering and long subjugated people of Russia, and more politicians and prominent Russians are becoming emboldened to question his competence and even his continous stay in power. Some local politicians have already been bold enough to call for his impeachment. This is ironic, in the sense that part of the unstated reasons for this invasion was to consolidate his grip on power, but it is turning out differently for the putrid Putin.

At the onset of this war, I did write that if Ukraine can manage to hold on for even two weeks, then, I will declare victory for the Ukrainians. Today, the battle is not only lingering beyond what is expected, Ukrainians are actually surprising everyone, and I will be the happiest man if Putin is demystified by this war. Sure, he will.

ASUU-IMSU Would Have Held It’s Own Congress To Declare A Strike Instead Of Hiding Under The National ASUU

AS ASUU-IMSU CLARIFIES THE CONFUSION ON PULLING OUT OF THE ONGOING STRIKE: MY TAKE

ONWUASOANYA FCC JONES

Yesterday, someone who later identified himself as a Professor with the Imo State University and whom I later discovered might either be a major stakeholder in ASUU or a keen Comrade, forwarded the ASUU-IMSU press statement on the confusion surrounding the purported resumption of academic activities in the school and also helped to shed some light on other contentious issues concerning ASUU-IMSU’s involvement in the strike action.

In the statement which is attached to this post, the union clarified that it was yet to call off the industrial action, and that against the understanding of some people, including myself, the chapter is not in sympathy strike with federal universities but is part of the national struggle for the survival of public universities and has “concrete stake” in the union. The statement also revealed that the ASUU local chapter was already planning for its own industrial action to protest against issues that affect her directly before the national strike action was declared and they joined.

My take on these are as follows;

1. It is obvious that ASUU-IMSU have their own VALID grievances against the Imo State Government, for which they would be justified if they embark on any kind of protest to draw the State government’s attention to their plight. However, there is no argument about the reality that this ongoing strike action is a national strike and the party involved is the Federal Government, not the State Government.

2. My personal analysis of the statement is that the ASUU-IMSU would still embark on its own strike action, as whatever agreements the ASUU is able to extract from the Federal Government will not be binding on the State Government. The ASUU-IMSU, if they were better advised would have held its own congress to declare a strike action on its own, itemizing the same disagreements they have outlined in this press statement, instead of hiding under the national ASUU to suffer our students. The ASUU-IMSU have not gone into any kind of negotiation with the Imo State Government in the last seven months since this strike persisted. Does it mean that after the FG must have agreed favourable terms with Professor Osodeke, the ASUU-IMSU would come back home to kick-start a fresh strike action? That would be highly insensitive.

3. The contention over the payment platform to be deployed in payment of university staff salaries does not concern ASUU-IMSU, as the Imo State Government is yet to adopt IPPIS as a payment platform. The argument by ASUU-IMSU leadership to the effect that the Imo State Government should adopt UTAS for the payment of university staff salaries, while excluding the university from the Treasury Single Account portrays the ASUU-IMSU leadership as selfish, unpatriotic and greedy. How would you want the State Government to pay you salaries and yet still want her to stop an accountability policy that has greatly reduced incidents of wastages and leakage of funds. I wished, I was able to study this press statement before it went public, I would have advised the ASUU-IMSU leadership to withdraw that particular aspect of their demands, because it makes a mess of their argument of fighting for public good. Insistence on stoppage of the TSA policy is tantamount to asking for government to allow monies generated from the university to be frittered away while you expect the same government to pay you commensurate salaries and allowances. Where do you expect that money to come from?

4. The Imo State Government has not treated the academic staff of that university fairly, if the claims on that press statement are anything to be gone by. How do you owe staff multiple months in incremental salaries and expect them to perform optimally? The professor through whom I got this statement confided in me that he was promoted to professor since about 2019 but has been receiving the salary equivalent of a Senior lecturer, a rank he left more than six years ago. This means that at his elevation to Associate professorship and subsequent elevation to substantive professorship, he has not received the financial equivalent. That is the height of irresponsibility on the part of the State Government.

5. The nonpayment of earned wages allowance, pension deductions from 2016 till 2020, nonpayment of a particular month’s salary, amounting to over 300 Million Naira, are issues the State Government needs to look into and find ways to resolve before the ASUU-IMSU embarks on its own strike action. However, it remains my opinion that those who do not work, should not be paid, if the State Government finds it convenient to pay these lecturers for the months they stayed at home and that such concession would fast-track a resolution of the industrial action, then, they should make any concessions that would see our children return to classes as quickly as possible.

6. I will also advise that the method adopted by the State Government in trying to force the lecturers back to classroom might not be the best method. University education is not ekeonunwa apprenticeship where you can fire one teacher today and hire another one tomorrow. The State Government should enter into a negotiation with ASUU and not trying to use threats of sacking those who fail to resume to intimidate these lecturers. I must concede that given the desperation for job and the hunger in the State, some of these lecturers might rush to resume school, for fear of losing their jobs, but those who do that would have forever lost their honour and reduced themselves to not more than street urchins who would run helter-skelter when they are threatened with stoppage of their stipends.

7. ASUU-IMSU on their own must admit their strategic error in failing to give its own individual notice for strike action, and be open to making reasonable concessions, and wait to fight another day. Neither the State Government nor the ASUU leadership must stick to their guns. Rooms must be left open for compromise, if not for anything else, but for the sake of our dear children.

MAY IMO WIN!

Nigerians In Diaspora Ready To Consolidate The New Nigeria’s Mantra Of Labour Party, Peter Obi, Others

Well meaning Nigerians living abroad have expressed utmost willingness to stand by the struggles and aspirations of Labour Party and its Presidential candidate, Peter Obi and Ahmed Datti to bring about the long desired change in the forthcoming Presidential election in the country by setting up Labour Party structures outside the country.

Nigerians in Dublin Ireland, Northern Ireland who are enthusiastic for a better fatherland stressed this in a Virtual meeting held on Sunday 18th September 2023 with the Chairman Diaspora Committee of Labour Party, Hon. Chibuike Amadichi who moderated the interactive sessions.

The notable Nigerians of different tribes living in the Republic of Ireland stated their readiness to start a Labour Party Dublin Ireland chapter.

They strongly expressed their desires and commitment to ensure the dividends they enjoy abroad as citizens in their base are replicated back home adding that there is no other fatherland they have except Nigeria hence their fellows in other parts of the World are also willing and ready to form Labour Party structures and Chapters to support the Party’s Presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi.

This is just a few of the testimonies and evidence of how prepared the Labour Party is towards the elections as well as the level of Confidence and acceptance Nigerians have on the party’s candidates.

It also shows the overwhelming and growing structures of the party against Statements from opposition that the party has no structure and cannot win in the 2023 election.

In the foregoing, Peter Obi and Ahmed Datti are not only dogged achievers but have shown themselves approved for the overwhelming support and commendations enjoyed across boards in the serious way and manner they have taken their sought jobs to interact with Nigerians everywhere they find themselves to know the yearnings of the people especially the youths who have been neglected and sidelined over time in the scheme of things in the country.

However, the Diaspora Committee of the Labour Party headed by Hon. Chibuike Amadichi is practically doing that and more of the job that Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) was mandated to do by the Federal government. This is because the party and its candidates values all Nigerians whether home or in Diaspora.

Lagos PDP Gov Candidate, Funke Akindele, Visit Man, Whose Vehicle Was Auctioned

The Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Oladide Adediran and his running mate, Funke Akindele, on Saturday, visited a man, whose vehicle was among those recently auctioned by the Lagos State government over traffic law infringement.

In a video shared on the Twitter handle of Adediran, the man, Osinachi Ndukwe, narrated his ordeal and how his daughter died while he was in prison and he still ended up forfeiting his vehicle to the government.

Responding, Adediran said, “The purpose for which a government is in power is to see to our welfare. That is not to say that if you go on the wrong side of the law, you won’t be penalized. But what we are saying is that we don’t want a penalty that will take people’s livelihood away from them…We have come to see how we can provide succour to your plight.”

Ndukwe’s vehicle was impounded by the Lagos State government for flouting traffic laws.

Poor Reading Culture May Be Responsible For Crime Rate – Minister

Rt Hon Goodluck Nanah Opiah, Minister of State for Education has expressed that poor reading culture may be responsible for certain ills ravaging the society at the moment.

He disclosed that criminals acts related to suicide bombing, banditry, terrorism and other societal vices cannot be divorced from inadequate reading habit.

In this vein, the minister said that promotion of reading culture remains one of the top priorities of the education ministry.

This was part of his major revelations at the flag off ceremony of the National Library of Nigeria Readership Promotion Campaign at the conference hall of the federal ministry of education, Abuja, on Thursday, 15th September, 2022.

In his keynote address at the event, the minister said that against the backdrop of general notion that Nigerians are reading less than they used to, and that a worrying percentage of children have trouble reading comprehension, prompted the activation of various readership promotion campaigns by the National Library of Nigeria, and other stakeholders.

On the efforts of the federal government towards the project, the minister said that the promotion of a reading culture is reflected in the Pillar 10 (Library Services in Education) of the Ministry’s Education for Change! A Ministerial Strategic Plan (MSP) adding that “efforts are ongoing by the Nigerian government to entrench, stimulate and enhance the reading of books, newspapers and magazines and this is especially important at a time when an increasing number of people spend less time reading, and when reading skills are declining. This may have been the cause of suicide bombing, banditry, terrorism and other societal vices”

The minister who commended the management and staff of National Library of Nigeria for taking this year Readership Promotion Campaign to the grassroots said that the theme of this year’s campaign “Reading as a Panacea for Societal Problems is timely and appropriate considering the declining reading habit of the world today and in particular, Nigeria.

Said he, a reading culture enhances the development of a nation. A reading society no doubt is an informed and knowledgeable society that contributes positively to economic transformation and all-round development of its country.
“Reading adds quality to life, provides access to culture qns cultural heritage. Reading empowers and emancipates citizens and brings people together”

Iwuanyanwu’s First Reach For The Post Of The President Of Nigeria

By late June 1990, after the Federal Government had announced the lifting of ban on political activities, Chief Iwuanyanwu had done a lot of work to ensure that he emerged as the accepted presidential candidate for the NRC during its primaries.

Many members of the NRC felt this sustained pressure from Chief Iwuanyanwu to secure the party’s presidential flag. The other serious contenders to this pressure at this time were Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi, Alhaji Adamu Ciroma and Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

By this time, Chief Iwuanyanwu had made important connections and friends across the country. He owned the Iwuanyanwu Nationale football club which climbed to the first division in its first season. He had succeeded in spreading balanced information with the Champion group of newspapers. He had built hospitals, roads, and schools.

He had given out huge funds of over 100 million Naira by way of charity (including scholarships to over 1000 youths as at 1990) through the Iwuanyanwu Foundation. This was besides having over 25,000 workers being paid their salaries consistently every month in his companies by 1990.

Chief Iwuanyanwu did not spare his wealth in galvanizing for political support across Nigeria. His private jet was almost always in the sky, flying to campaigns around Nigeria. At a time, he was taken around the north by Mallam Abba Dabo, Alhaji Tudun Wada and Alhaji Muhammadu Kura.

Chief Iwuanyanwu spent heavily appointing coordinators in all the then 453 local government areas of Nigeria. It is staggering to comprehend that he spent millions upon millions of Naira during the entire campaigning activities within the NRC….
He had political support base even amongst the older politicians once of the defunct Nigerian People’s Party (NPP). At this time, Chief Sam Mbakwe was in full support of Chief Iwuanyanwu’s ambition. In public and private ceremonies of important dignitaries anywhere in Nigeria, Chief Iwuanyanwu would come with older politicians to grace the occasion.

Acutely aware that votes coming from his home state were not enough to give him the post of president, Chief Iwuanyanwu cut deeper into mobilizing support from everywhere. He toured Ibadan (where he was conferred with a chieftaincy title of Balogun Babanguwa of Ibadan Land, after being endorsed by powerful Yoruba politicians). He toured all over the north, Cross River State, Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State.

He learnt quite a lot going to these places. For instance, he observed that some people in the Niger Delta claimed that some Igbo leaders did not treat them well before and during the civil war (Awogbemila, 1990:21). Chief Iwuanyanwu did his best to unite the Igbos with their kiths and kins. This was manifest from the tremendous support they gave him during his presidential contest and also the voting direction and massive support the Igbos and their kiths and kins gave to President Goodluck Jonathan during his presidential contest in 2015 and 2019.

It is pertinent to note that the cordial relationship between the South-South and South-East still exists. No other Igbo contender could rise to challenge Chief Iwuanyanwu as at 1990.

As at early 1990, some personalities from the two political parties were already being fingered as serious weights who could clinch the post of the presidency. Foremost amongst the names that kept appearing in newspaper analyses as people to consider was Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Other names included Chief Abel Ubeku; Hammed Kusamotu; Gabriel Akinyede; Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe of the dissolved People’s Front of Nigeria (PFN); Moshood Akanbi (former chief executive of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company); and Reverend S.T. Ola Akande, a Baptist minister. With time, an easterner and former Nigeria’s ambassador to Brazil, Patrick Dele Cole of the SDP, became noted.
The reality of politics in Nigeria at the time was that the north had more slots than both the west and east combined. This was called “the lopsided nature”.

It occurred in the distribution of the then 453 local governments that made up the country as at 1990. 245 local governments were located in the area that was formerly the old Northern region and 208 local governments were located in areas that used to be Eastern and Western regions.

There was also the tendency for people to vote along ethnic lines. There was also the factor of political disunity in the east where rallying support for one political front was extremely difficult. This lopsided nature presented a powerful snag for prominent politicians in southern Nigeria.

Okoko Ndem (Radio Biafra) Vs Radio Nigeria 1967-1970

OKOKO_NDEM (RADIO BIAFRA) VS RADIO NIGERIA 1967-1970 .

During the Civil war of 1967-1970, the Nigeria Army backed by Britain led a genocidal war on Biafra a largely Igbo dominated area of former Eastern Nigeria turned Biafra.

The man behind the media in Biafra was Okoko Ndem from Ikoneto in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State) . During the advent of Biafra he was declared the MOST WANTED MAN IN NIGERIA after OJUKWU Because of the way and manner he reported About the war. Some of his words were:-

1.Biafra has a military that no force in Africa can defeat.

2. The whole 2nd Division of the Nigerian Army is dead Happing now at Abagana.

3. We have developed a nuclear war head (Ogbunigwe) That will wipe out Nigerian Army.

4. Awolowo has assured us that as soon as we secede, West will follow.

5. Nigeria is committing genocide against Igbo.

6. Nigeria has blockade Biafra to cause starvation in Biafra.

7. Yorubas are complaining that the war is lasting too long. They will soon throw-in the towel and leave only Northerners to fight Biafra. It will be easier to defeat the Northerners!

8. It is the British, the Russians and Egyptians that are helping Nigeria to have upper hand!

The Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, said the late Okokon Ndem handled the propaganda of Biafra to the extent that neither Nigeria nor its opponent was sure of the real situation, a development which informed the announcement by General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) “as no victor no vanquished verdict at the end of the war.”

A typical event that will bring out the absurdity and fun of the whole drama. Is the capture of Enugu. Let us assume that the time is 13.00 hours (1.00 p.m.) which is the normal time for the National News Network Broadcasts in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Newscaster in Enugu would say: “This is Radio Nigeria broadcasting from Enugu, the Capital of East Central State. Here is the News. The Nigerian Army has now taken full control of Enugu and is doing mopping up exercises in the adjoining villages.

Meanwhile, life is returning to normal in the town and the Nigerian Red Cross is distributing food to the refugees who have whole-heartedly embraced the Nigerian soldiers who liberated them from Ojukwu’s clutches. A new Civilian Administrator, Mr. Ukpabi Asika, has been appointed by the Head of State, Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon. Mr. Ukpabi Asika will soon move to Enugu to assume duties”

At the same time, on Radio Biafra (situated somewhere outside Enugu), the newscaster would say: “This is Radio Biafra broadcasting from Enugu, the capital of Biafra. Here is the news read by Okoko Ndem. The sporadic shelling you have been hearing in Enugu has been found to be perpetrated by saboteurs who planned to kill General Ojukwu, the Head of State of Biafra and to hand over Biafra back to Gowon.

The locations of these saboteurs have been found out and the saboteurs are being rounded up. Please keep calm, be vigilant and go about your normal businesses. The ring leaders, Lt. Col. Banjo, Major Ifeajuna and Civilian Major Alele have been captured, tried and executed by firing squad. General Ojukwu, the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Biafran Armed Forces congratulate all those who assisted in flushing out all these saboteurs.

Long live Biafra. Igbo Kwenu; Anyi ga adi kwanu? Eh, anyi ga adi. (English translation of the Igbo phrases are: “The Masses please respond; shall we all survive? Yes, we
shall survive”).

Federal Polytechnic Nekede Deploys Turnitin Software To Check Plagiarism,Emerges First Polytechnic In Eastern Nigeria To Do So

Federal Polytechnic Nekede has acquired a special software called Turnitin to check incidences of plagiarism bedeviling the academia. This development, according to officials of the software company, has effectively made the institution the first Polytechnic East of the Niger that has so deployed the technology which can detect academic fraud within five minutes.

Meanwhile, the digital Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Engr. Dr. Michael Arimanwa FNSE, JP, has expressed the commitment of his institution to bequeath a culture of excellence and integrity through the deployment of the anti-plagiarism software, Turnitin.

The Rector made this remark Wednesday at a seminar organized for members of the Anti-Plagiarism Committee of the polytechnic held at the council chambers. The successful deployment of the software, according to the poly chief, is in consonance with the culture of excellence which his administration has enthroned in the running of the polytechnic.

According to the award-winning Rector, “The idea of the software is to check all forms of dishonesty in publications and intellectual enterprise. It will contain the recurrence of intellectual theft amongst academics. The software is also programmed to identify the source of any copied work with the aim of exposing the people involved.”

To this end, the polytechnic chief executive has advocated the setting up of an institutional repository to contain the published works of lecturers in the institution. This, according to the Rector, will make it easy for scholars to put their works online to test or protect their integrity.

The Rector used the occasion to condemn the menace of plagiarism which he identified as a factor undermining hard work amongst scholars. He cited the case of a certain Reader in a university whose papers failed the anti-plagiarism test, prompting the university to demote him to the rank of lecturer I, in addition to his forfeiting promotion for five years after the said event. He therefore warned that lecturers must imbibe the culture of hardwork so as not to be caught in the web of plagiarism.

Moving forward, the Rector hinted that all lecturers would soon be required to send digital copies of their works so that they could be published online.

He also promised to deploy the Turnitin software in the areas of continuing education and distance learning. “This will enable people who cannot leave their locations at any material time to receive lectures while some distance away,” the Rector concluded.

Rector Arimanwa also enjoined members of the committee to work hard so that they would in turn train others in the community. He thanked them for their commitment over the years to the anti-plagiarism fight, promising henceforth to deploy the technology on any work that would be sent for external assessment.

The climax of the ceremony was the formal presentation of the evidence of the anti-plagiarism software registration to the Rector by the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Chris Enyia, who also expressed joy that the institution had successfully subscribed to the latest version of the software, thanking the Rector for his noble vision in repositioning the polytechnic for excellent strides.

It is noteworthy that the Turnitin software aims at ensuring integrity in global education in order to improve learning outcomes. Records show that over 90% of performing universities globally have deployed the software.

Remarkably, Federal Polytechnic Nekede is the first polytechnic in Eastern Nigeria (southsouth and southeast) to deploy the technology and the third in Nigeria after Yaba College of Technology and Federal Polytechnic Ede.

Arondizuogu In History For Culture, Tradition And Tourism

Arondizuogu was founded by the use of force by Mazi Izuogu Mgbokpo and his brothers (Iheme) in the mid-14th century. Izuogu Mgbokpo was a charismatic slave merchant who came from Arochukwu to Ọka in search of slaves. He was usually harbored by a friend from Umualaoma where he slept when going in search of slaves and with his goods (slaves).

Some of the slaves of Izuogu maintained the name even after they were freed from captivity. Izuogu Mgbokpo has three children and three brothers. The children were Uche (Ndi Uche whose mother was from Isiekenesii), Awa (Ndiawa)and Amazu (Ndiamazu).

While the brothers were Imoko (Ndi-imoko), Njoku (Ndi-Njoku) and Akame (Ndi-akaeme). Others are aborigines such as Ogbuonyeoma, Amankwu, Ekwuru Iheme, himself, was his Chief Servant and he came from Isi-Akpu Nise, in Ọka.

Iheme and his master Izuogu used all the weapons at their disposal, including the slaves, juju, guns and other equipments for securing slaves which they sold to the European slave merchants, Arondizuogu people refer to themselves as “Izuogu na Iheme”.

Early in the 19th century, Mazi Okoli Idozuka was an immigrant from Isi-Akpu Nise to Arondizuogu. As a great slave warrior, he expanded Arondizuogu’s boundaries. He later changed his name to Okoro Idozuka, an Aro equivalent of his former name. He was a wealthy ruthless and almost conscienceless slave trader like Izuogu Mgbokpo but was also a great leader. Nwankwo Okoro was the first son of Okoro Idozuka. At the age of 21 he joined his father in the slave trade. ] By collecting slaves and war-captives he was able to build a very large family.

When the British came, they made him a Warrant Chief because they believed he could subdue anybody and collect the taxes they desperately needed form them. Until this day, Arondizuogu is the biggest former Aro colony and a land of immigrants settling mainly on the rich land.

Some Places of Interest in Arondizuogu include Mazi Mbonu Ojike Cottage (Village home of Nigeria’s late “Boycott king”), Mazi Mbonu Ojike at Ndiakeme Uno; Uno Ogologo (a safe house built in 1887 for hiding children during the slave trade era); The Stone Palace (a storey building cast in stone erected by late Chief Green Mbadiwe, West Africa’s first millionaire for his father, Umualaoma Nkwo Ochie (old Nkwo).

Mbadiwe Odum at Ndianiche Uno; Ngeze (legendary stream at Ndiakeme Uno); Ogbuti Ezumezu (exotic visitor’s chamber of Ikeji music maestro Pericoma Okoye at Ndiogbuonyeoma Ofe Imo). Dr. K.O. Mbadiwe at Ndianiche Uno commissioned by late Prime minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa in 1965).Obi Omenuko, homestead of Igwegbe Odum (Omenuko), the hero of Pita Nwana’s book.

Ndi izuogu lives in many local government areas in Imo State. Although they have almost the same dialect with the group of Igbos in Anambra state, apart from Ndi Uche (descendants of the first son of Izuogu) that still retain a slightly different language as they live at the border to protect other members of the clan. Their language is slightly affected by their neighbours. It is remarkable that Arondizuogu is the only community that inhabits three local government areas apart from Mbaise. The local Government they inhabit include Okigwe, Ideato North and Onuimo.

Arondizuogu is made up of 20 villages.

Pericoma The Pride Of Igbo Culture

Pericoma Okoye was a singer, songwriter and traditionist. He was predominantly known throughout Igboland for his style of music and strong belief and practice of the traditional religion of the Igbo people, named Obeah. His title was ‘Arusi Makaja’ he allegedly performed several feats which defied several rules of physics. A good percentage of the people from Arondizuogu, his community, saw him as a little god. Several displays of “supernatural powers” or “sorcery” as it was often tagged, and back-to-back victories in contests, earned him the alias “Lion of Africa” He featured in a movie titled Lion Of Africa alongside Nollywood Legend, Pete Edochie. The movie, which was in two parts, was a biography of his early life. He is the father of internet personality and musician Speed Darlington. On one faithful day on his way to Onitsha, he was waylaid by tax collectors at the then notorious Upper Iweka. These tax collectors, not knowing who he was, demanded for his tax receipts, but he ignored them.
One of the thugs lifted him up, placed him on his shoulders, and carried him to their office. He did not utter a word nor complained. On the way, he suddenly became too heavy such that the guys who carried him wanted to put him down, but he could not. For several hours they begged him to come down but he refused, and insisted that the gods must be appeased for him to come down. He made several requests which included certain amount of money. His requests were all provided and he majestically came down from the guy’s shoulder after several hours. This brought about the popular saying “Pericoma na anyị ajọ alo” That incident was said to have put an end to the menace of illegal tax collectors at Upper Iweka. He was prime minister of the Arondizogu community in Imo state until his death in 2017.May he continue to rest in Power ✊

Nnamdi Kanu: Appeal Court Reserves Judgment, Adjourns Indefinitely

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday, has reserved judgment on the case against the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Human rights Lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who led the delegation of legal practitioners representing the IPOB leader, urged the court to strike out the remaining charges citing a lack of credibility.

Ozekhome specifically prayed the appellate court to review the April 8 ruling of the trial court which struck out only eight out of the 15 charges.

He also insisted that the charge FG entered against him had no basis in law. Kanu, in his appeal dated April 29 and marked CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022, applied to be discharged and acquitted.

However, following an application the embattled IPOB leader filed for abridgement of time, the appellate court brought the matter forward for hearing as against the initial October 11 fixed for the hearing.

When the matter was called up today, a three-man panel led by Justice Jummai Hanatu, said it had no need to delve into the issue of bail since the substantive appeal was ripe for hearing.

Arguing the appeal claim, Ozekhome alleged that his client was forcefully abducted from Kenya and illegally renditioned back to the country.

He told the court that his client was first arraigned on December 23, 2015 and was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.

“My lords, he was enjoying this bail without breaching the terms. However, he was in his ancestral home when agents of the respondent invaded his home in September 2017.

“When the Appellant travelled from London to Kenya, agents of the respondents, on June 27, 2021, forcefully abducted the appellant, tortured and renditioned him back to the country without following any extradition process,” Ozekhome added

He further argued that Kenya, being the country from where Kanu was arrested and extraordinarily renditioned back to Nigeria, ought to have authorised his extradition.

Meanwhile, the FG, through its lawyer, Mr. David Kaswe, urged the court to dismiss the appeal for want of merit.

He asserted that the IPOB leader was brought back to the country by due process of the law.

He argued that the charge had been amended seven times owing to the conduct of the appellant.

“My lords, it took four years and huge resources to get the respondent arrested and brought back to face the charges against him.

“We are saying that the trial court was even wrong to have struck out the eight charges as it did.

“It is only after the FG has produced all its witnesses and tendered its evidence that the Appellant could claim that no prima-facie case was established.

“Finally, we urge this court to dismiss the appeal for lacking in merit,” Kaswe added.

After listening to both sides, the panel said it would communicate a date for the judgment.

We Spent N50m On Alabo’s Illness, You Like Eulogies The Dead, Wike Blasts Amaechi

The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has blasted his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his comments at the burial of four-time federal minister, Alabo Tamunotenyim Omubo Graham-Douglas (TOG).

Amaechi at the burial over the weekend knocked Wike for not taking responsibility for Alabo’s burial. He said, “Indeed going by the contributions he made to the state, I was thinking that the state would take responsibility for everything concerning Alabo. You don’t need to be Governor to be recognised.”

Reacting to Amaechi, the Rivers governor said, “It’s unfortunate and I ask him, when Alabo was sick, where were you? This state government committed so much to make sure Alabo survived. I want to challenge anybody. We didn’t spend anything less than N50 million to make sure our elder statesman survived. It is the survival we want. We wanted him to be alive.

“When his late son had an accident and was flown to London, this state government bore the cost. Go and ask people. We don’t need to say all these things but you like to eulogise the dead.”

Uzodimma Warns Priests Against Partisan Politics

Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, on Sunday asked Catholic bishops and archbishops to order priests converting pulpits to campaign grounds to stop.

The governor also urged the clerics to caution priests who make inciting statements on the pulpits to refrain from doing so.

The governor who spoke in his address at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria held in Orlu asked the prelates to use the opportunity of the conference to reaffirm the neutrality of the Church.

Uzodiinma said while he was not against the members of the clergy speaking against social ills and criticising the governments, clerics shouldn’t dabble in politics.

The governor said, “Your Graces and Lordships, permit me to also point out, with every sense of responsibility, that I do not think it is right for some members of the clergy to convert God’s house and the pulpit to the soap box for campaigns for their preferred candidates or parties in an election season or anytime in the election cycle.

“Sadly, this has become the norm in many of our churches. My worry is that if the church drags itself into partisan politics, then it would have lost its moral authority to pontificate because it has made itself an interested party.

“Indeed, the church cannot be in the moral pedestal to preach against certain conducts of the society if it has not gone through purification by purging itself of those who are diminishing its authority. I believe that true sanctification can only come when the church presents itself as a living testament of good, impartial and temperate conduct. It is my sincere hope that one of your resolutions from this conference will be to condemn members of the clergy who use their positions and the church for political ends.

“In the same vein, some priests under your watch have through inciting sermons also taken it upon themselves to inflame passions, instead of abating them. In addition, I have noticed with dismay that some members of the clergy have also become open canvassers for separatism and secession. Sadly, they also use the sacred pulpit to do this. This should not be the case. The need for the church to remain on high moral standards includes abstaining from fiery comments that seem to highlight and promote our differences rather than on the things that unite us.

“This conference is holding today because Nigeria, though beset by insecurity in some parts, is not in a state of war. No matter the imperfections of our republic and democracy, we are still better off in a united country.

“To the glory of God, we have an increasing number of political leaders who are committed to addressing these imperfections, especially as it concerns equity and justice, so we can build the perfect nation we all desire. And I can assure you that it is only a matter of time before this is achieved, On their part, Church leaders should continue to promote the unity of the country and not its division.

“I wholly understand that priests have the right and duty to hold our leaders and governments accountable, and nobody will ever stop a priest from condemning the ills in the society, including bad governance and corruption. My position should not be misinterpreted as an attempt to rob them of this moral authority that they have enjoyed since the beginning of time.

“I, therefore, appeal to your Graces and Lordships to bring up these concerns of mine in the course of your deliberations during the conference. It is important that you reaffirm the church’s neutrality on political matters and, thereafter, caution the priests not to dabble into partisan politics. Above all, they should also desist from fanning the embers of disunity in the country.

“Your Excellencies, as a baptised Catholic, I have every respect not only for the Church but for the priests and the entire leadership. As my spiritual fathers, I draw a lot of inspiration from you, individually and collectively. Thus, I would be sad to witness anything that tends to weaken or erode your authority and reverence.

“I am sure that the current leadership of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria will work harder to strengthen its arms to make them responsive to the yearnings of the faithful. Going by your programmes, I am also hopeful that you will address some of the contending and contemporary issues in our country today. As always, I have no doubt that your goal is to make Nigeria a better place not only for Catholics but for every Nigerian.”
