Insecurity in Nigeria: AGC Clergyman Pastor Prince Advises Government, Colleagues To Seek The Face Of God

Pastor Prince Ukwu, a notable clegyman with Assemblies of God Church, AGC, Nigeria has called on his colleagues and Nigerians in general to seek the face of God in the face of the incessant security threats across the country on daily basis.

The Pastor made the call following the level of banditry,herdsmen-farmers clashes, extrajudicial killings, and kidnapping in the country and Imo State in particular while noting that Leaders both in Sacred and Circular part of the society have failed.

He stressed that the government has lost the trust of the masses as many sectors have incurred losses as a result of the insecurity in the land and called on the powers that be to do the needful to restore peace in the state as well as the confidence of the people in governance.

“On the other hand when the government failed it’s expected that the church leaders should rise to the occasion and condemn the abnormalities without fear of favour, and should also suggest possible ways out of the mess. That is what we read every day in the Bible, the Pastors, Prophets, and other Men called of God are called to keep watch over the city, and if they go blind the entire city goes blind, and if they are silent, things will go bad”

Pastor Ukwu who is also an Ambassador said the time is ripe for Church leaders, clergymen as well as the federal

and state governments to go back to the drawing board and as well call for a Solemn Assembly to find lasting solutions to problems facing the country.

“This time I expect both the government and the church leaders to call for SOLEMN ASSEMBLY, we need to go back to God; cry, pray, seek His face, confess our sins and He(God) will hear us from heaven and heal our land” 2Chronicles 7:14.

“We need God’s intervention in our dear State and Nigeria in general, the governor Hope Uzodinma I read said he can not fix the insecurity alone. That is a pure confession but he needs to come out clear by inviting the people who have solutions to the problem, he should be the one to call them, not waiting for them to come.

The man of God noted that Governor Uzodimma did well to have dissolved his cabinet but prays he gets better people on board on constituting the next cabinet while calling on Men of God to seek the face of God for the country.

“One good thing done by the Governor was to dissolve his executive council and now he should look for people who should tell him the bitter truth and not praise singers. He should look for genuine Church leaders to advise him prayerfully”

“The church on their own should call for a day of prayers(Solemn Assembly) to seek for God to intervene in our state Imo, and Nigeria at large and it should a routine event”

Ukwu Prince and thankGod Emeh, Owerri.

Government at all levels are advised to always see to the welfare of inmates from time to time in order to keep them physically and mentally sound as well turn them into better persons when they leave the correctional centres.

The Founder and Executive Director of Gift Health Plus Inc, a US based Non Profit Organization aimed at alleviating the plight of the disadvantaged and vulnerable population in society, Chief Chamberlain Nwanne gave the advice on his visit to the Federal Correctional Centre, Owerri in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC to make donation of medications and personal hygiene supplies to inmates at the centre on Thursday June 3, 2021.

Chief Nwanne stressed the need for inmates at the correctional centre to be treated with somewhat dignity, adding that it is not out of place for the government to take up certain responsibility of inmates to ensure that they exist and feel a sense of belonging.

“We are opportune to partner with the national Human Rights Commission to help provide medical services to all the Federal Prisons in Nigeria and part of that partnership involves providing the inmates regardless of religion, ethnicity, political affiliation and creed with some health assistance”

He decried how hopeless it can be for a number of inmates especially the ones that are still awaiting trial and have not gone through justice to ascertain their innocence or guilt of the alleged crimes and offences hence the aim of the medical outreach to the inmates

I was told that there is a very serious need for personal hygiene as a result we brought toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, body lotion, body wash because I know sometimes it seems hopeless being in jail especially when I know most of these people are still awaiting trial and have not gone through the course of justice”

“Today, we have a thousand doses of Anti-Hypertension medications, a thousand doses of Anti-Diabetic medications, a thousand doses of Anti-Malaria medications and a thousand doses of Multi-Vitamins medications”, the Gift Health Plus Chief Executive stated.

The Imo-born US based Philanthropist added that the Prisons ought be a place of re-orientation and re-programming of inmates’ bad lifestyle as obtainable in advanced countries and not otherwise.

“What we are doing is to instill dignity in the inmates even when they are proven guilty because the prison should be a rehabilitation home than punitive and the least we can do is to provide some of these essential things for them to have some dignity while serving their jail terms”

Speaking also, the State Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission, Imo State Office, Mrs Ukah Ukachi said it is the Commission’s mandate to protect, promote and enforce citizens’ right adding that the visit to prisons is part of the responsibility.

She thanked the Founder, management and staff of Gift Health Plus Inc for coming through and making sure that rights of inmates at Owerri Correctional Centre to health are not endangered rather given a sense of dignity.

“I am so happy and glad because I know this is part of the core sector that the National Human Rights Commission is mandated to do. We are happy because we see one of us coming to partner with the Commission to do one of its functions which is our sole responsibility to partner with NGOs and CSOs to make sure that the rights of citizens are protected”

“We are so happy with Gift Health Plus for their act of understanding the need of the time. We appreciate his effort and that of the organization at large for reaching out to the Owerri Correctional Centre”

The Imo NHRC Coordinator advised that people should always speak out against extra-judicial killings and injustices around them noting that the Commission will not fight for their rights in vacuum except through valid complaints and petitions to the Commission while assuring those that have reached out to them of their cases being properly investigated and handled.

“People should speak out and it is not hearsay that people’s rights are being trampled upon in the state. So people should come up with complaints so that the Commission will be able to work on it as it has been working. I urge people whose rights are trampled upon to come up for the Commission is out to make sure that they get justice”

While commending the Founder of the donor organization -Gift Health Plus and the National Human Rights Commission, the Deputy Controller of Nigeria Correctional Service and Officer in-Charge of Owerri Correctional Centre, Imo state, Mr Oduntan Seyi Olukoya who noted that the donations are timely as regards the attack of the facility by hoodlums about two months ago expressed deep appreciation for the donations and prayed greater heights of the two organizations for coming to their aid.

“I say a very big thank you to the National Human Rights Commission whom through which the Non-Governmental Organization, NGO came in with all those items. The coming of these items is timely in the sense of filling the vacuum created in the Owerri Correctional Centre months back”

DC Olukoya also noted that there are structural and infrastructural innovations in the Owerri Federal Prisons to truly serve it as a correctional centre in educating inmates, re-designing, rebuilding and repackaging inmates’ lifestyles to fit in the larger society on completion of their jail years while pointing out insufficient logistics owing to destructions during the #EndSARS protests and current strike of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN as major challenges facing the center.

“In terms of correctional activities we have been trying our best since I came in here in 2018 as Officer-in-Charge and without mincing words, there has been a lot of turn-around in terms of correctional activities. In 2019, Nigeria Prison Service migrated to Nigeria Correctional Service and it encompasses reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration, the Correctional Officer added.

Reps Summons AGF Over Alleged Missing £5.5m As ICPC Recovers 7.5bn

The House of Representatives yesterday summoned the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, to appear before it and explain the whereabouts of an alleged missing 5.5 million Euros.

“The money was to go into the Nigeria Sovereign Wealth Fund as operational cost.“ Managing Director, Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund, Uche Orji, had told the House Ad hoc committee investigating the usage of looted and recovered funds that the money, which is supposed to come from the government of Ireland, had not been credited to the account of the agency, at the time of filing this report.

“But a letter he read before the committee, however, suggested that the money was sent to Nigeria, leaving lawmakers at a loss as to where it was lodged.

“Part of the monies recovered and expected to be transferred to the NSWF for its operations, also include 311 million Pounds from the United States and 4.2 million pounds from the United Kingdom.

“While Orji said the 311 million Pounds were transferred to the fund but not yet spent, he said the 4.2 million pounds and 5.5 million Euro were yet to be received.

“He said: “We are aware that an agreement has been reached between the Ministry of Justice and the counterpart countries. We have been notified about these agreement and that the funds will be transferred to us. But we are yet to receive the fund at the NSIA.”

“Asked whether the money was sent to Nigeria, he said: “All that I know is that we were asked to send an account and we have sent the account to the Central Bank but we are not involved in those negotiations.”

“However, while reading from a letter given to him by the committee, Orji said: “I am directed to refer to your letter that the sum of 5.5 million Euros be credited to the FGN Recovery Account.”.

On what credit means, he said “it means that the money has been sent.”.

“However, a member of the committee, Edun Olarenwaju, said : “It is important that we invite the Account General to come and interface with the NSIA. If you recall, yesterday (Tuesday), I challenged the Accountant General on whether that money was missing.

”Now, NSIA is saying they don’t know where the money is. So, there is need for two of them to appear before this committee tomorrow, so we can find a lasting solution to this. 5.5 million Euro is not a small money”.

“Chairman of the Committee ruled that the Managing Director should appear before the committee today to interface with the Accountant General and the Minister of Finance on the issue.

“The House also quizzed the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, representative of the Nigeria Navy, Rear Admiral Abraham Adaji, and the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, and turned back the representative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

“Chairman of ICPC, Prof Bolaji Owasanloye, told the committee that so far, the commission had recovered N7.5 billion looted fund, out of which the government accessed over N5 billion, leaving a balance of N2.1 billion in the account.

“He said the agency was adopting preventive measures in its operation, which he said explained why its recovery had been slow.

“He said the commission had also helped government recover about N188 billion between 2019 and 2020 from money released to MDAs which they did not need.

“According to him, the commission is currently investigating about 37,000 certificates which are supposed to be fake for a particular ministry but refused to disclose the name of the Ministry.

“Owasanloye said the ICPC had an assets recovery account, where recovered loots were usually deposited, adding that the commission had no business with Consolidated Revenue Fund.

“He said as a way forward, government could ask all its agencies to submit a quarterly report to it, adding that such a directive would ensure that all agencies were updated in their records and also keep government up to date with monies available for use, which they might not be aware of.

““There are some monies that we have successfully stopped from leaving government account. For example, we do investigations and discovered that an agency has requested for money that it does not require or the process has been dealt with. We write to the Minister and say, don’t pay out this money for this reason.

“That is called restraint. The money never come to us, but it shows in our record as recovery. For example, in 2019, about N41 billion was restrained in that manner when we did investigations in academic institutions that had apparently padded their payroll. In 2020, it was N147 billion.

“We look at your books and review it thoroughly and if all expenditures has been made and you are still having money you are not supposed to have, the Minister of Finance will not issue an order that the money should not be released.

“Such will reflect in our report that ICPC has recovered that money, but it is not cash and not in our account. It is also another efficient way of anti-corruption prevention. But it is not money that came to us,” he said.

“On his part, the Chairman of EFCC, Bawa, informed the lawmakers that the $43 million recovered from an apartment in Ikoyi years ago, was transmitted to the federal government.“On the disparity in the number of vessels handed over to them by the Nigeria Navy, Bawa said he would have to reconcile the figures of the Navy with that of the commission before making any comment.

“Our records are our records. Maybe they handed over vessels to NIMASA and thought it was EFCC,” he said.

“But the committee, however, told him that apart from disparity in the number of vessels handed over to them by the Navy, there was also a stark difference between the figures presented by the commission and the Ministry of Justice.

No Going Back On Asaba Resolution Ban On Open Grazing -Southern Governors

No going back on Asaba resolutions — Southern Govs

THE Southern Governors Forum, yesterday, insisted that there was no going back on its Asaba resolutions, just as it called on the Federal Government to shed itself of the excess weight it has appropriated over time.

Chairman of the South West Governors Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu, said this during the Senate Committee Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Akure, Ondo State.

The governor, who described the current system as not sustainable, said the Federal Government should only coordinate and receive royalties.

Akeredolu said: “A cursory glance at these resolutions will leave anyone keenly interested in finding lasting solutions to the myriad of challenges in the country with no better conclusions.

“The substratum is the quest for nationhood anchored on the principles of equity, justice and fair dealings, and the commitment of the governors to the unity of this country.

“The meeting deliberated on sundry issues and came up with a communiqué encapsulating the essence of the gathering, indeed a summation of the current agitation in the country at present.

“No patriotic citizen can deny the fact that the country faces dire challenges at the moment which, in themselves, bear the necessary ingredients for redefinition, determination, growth and eventual development.

“The movement towards social integration must be steady and focused.

“The leaders galvanising this course of history must cast aside partisanship, an unprofitable and distracting pastime at the moment of national emergencies, which often serves the purpose of parochialism, selfish considerations and permutations to outwit, beguile with the ultimate aim to displace and dispossess perceived opponents.

“This is the time for candour, that rare opportunity which gives vent to processed nuggets of introspection.

“This is the hour to accept that fundamental errors of judgement have been made and there is the need to correct same.

“This is the moment when brothers and sisters must look at themselves in the eyes, chastise in love and be ready to embrace, warmly, afterward.

“The stage must not be set for an unending and needless blame game and acrimony.

“This is definitely not a contest in sophistry where orators say so much but, in the end, say nothing. Providence has ensured our presence on the World Map as Nigerians, a badge which evokes a mixed feeling of approbation and warmth, on one hand, and a general sense of revulsion for attitudes symptomatic of the current crisis of confidence in the country.

“Our ability to deliberate, dispassionately, on the issues which, ultimately, define us as a nation of peoples bound in the same destiny, will be far-reaching in our quest for abiding solutions to the perennial crises.

“This is the summary of the decisions arrived at in Asaba when all the 17 Southern Governors deliberated on issues of governance and nationhood.

“The resolutions have been made public and there have been reactions, expectedly, from different quarters.”

It’s time FG sheds excess weight

Governor Akeredolu also faulted the current system saying it is not sustainable.

His words: “All the agitations of the peoples of this country must be looked into with a view to improving the economic power of the average citizens.

“The best way possible is to allow each region flower in its areas of comparative advantage.

“The behemoth called the Federal Government must shed the excess weight unduly appropriated over time. It is the major cause of friction.

“It is the reason for the politics of bitterness. It explains why everyone wants the power at the centre. It promotes ethnic chauvinists and encourages mediocrity.

“The new law must view, critically, the current misnomer which sees the Federal Government appropriating humongous amounts for moribund agencies whose duties overlap with those of the states.”

In his remarks, the leader of the committee, Senator Ajayi Boroffice said that the review provides a platform for Nigerians to express their opinions on the fundamental law that governs their lives through proposals that will lead to the highest good for the greatest number of people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Said He Is Not Done With Palestine As Missile Response Continues

Israel dealing with Palestine with swag.

The death toll continues to climb amid more fighting between Israel and Hamas.
Officials from the U.S., Egypt, Qatar and United Nations are working around the clock to broker a truce in Gaza after more than a week of deadly fighting left more than 200 people dead, but Israel’s leader signaled he’s not yet ready to let up.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he’ll do “whatever it takes” to restore order after persistent rocket attacks from Gaza sparked Israeli jet strikes in retaliation. He said his goal is to “degrade” the ability of Hamas, which governs the densely populated Gaza strip, to threaten Israel.

“I hope it won’t take long, but it’s not immediate,” Netanyahu told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” in a Sunday interview. “We are targeting a terrorist organization that is targeting our civilians and hiding behind their civilians — using them as human shields.”

Yet Israel drew outrage for targeting non-combatants after it leveled a high-rise building in Gaza on Saturday that housed news outlets such as the Associated Press and Al Jazeera, as well as residential apartments. Netanyahu said Israel warned occupants to evacuate the building, which he said had been used by Hamas’s military wing, before striking it.

Pressed on CBS for proof of how the building had been used, Netanyahu said “we share with our American friends all that intelligence.”

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Europe this week, held calls with counterparts in France, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on Sunday. On Monday he spoke with Tunisia’s foreign minister and, at a press conference in Copenhagen, said the U.S. is “prepared to lend our support” should the Israelis and Palestinians “seek a ceasefire,” while stopping short of calling for one.

“Ultimately it is up to the parties to make clear that they want to pursue a ceasefire — any ceasefire would be by definition between them but we’re ready to engage in support and meanwhile, we are working tirelessly across every diplomatic channel we have to advance the prospect of getting to getting to calm,” Blinken said.

Blinken’s readouts of his calls haven’t suggested much progress on the diplomatic front and some critics have said the U.S. appears to be giving Netanyahu time to inflict more damage on Hamas. The U.S. has also faced questions about whether it is delaying deliberations at the United Nations.

Attack On Our Facilities Will Affect Election Preparation -INEC

The independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC, has lamented on how incessant attacks on its facilities will affect the commissions preparations for elections across the nation.

Speaking in a monitored programme on Channels Television, ‘Politics Today’, INEC, National Commissioner on publicity, Festus Okoye, decried how worrisome the attacks are to the commission.

“Some of these attacks occurred at different periods and times. We have not been able to pin-down the motive for these attacks. But we have done what we are required to do by making sure that we report to the police. So it is their responsibility to carry out investigations relating to some of these attacks. But in truth and in fairness, we cannot say we know the motive of these attacks. The four attacks that took place in May, we are unable to make a determination on why these attacks occur because most of them occurred in the night and giving the challenge the security agencies are having, in some of the states in the South-East,

is really difficult for us to make a determination on the reasons behind these systematic and coordinated attacks at INEC offices especially in the South-East.

“At LGA level, If you attack our local government office, you are attacking our capacity to conduct elections. We are worried that our preparation is being distracted… In Kano, most of our data is offline. But what is going on will affect our preparation” Okoye stated.

Residents Nlame Government As Rain Destroys Property, Vehicles In Imo

Residents of Road 19 and Nnamdi Olebara Street, World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri, the Imo State capital, are still counting their losses following Saturday’s rainfall that destroyed properties and no fewer than six cars in the area.

The downpour, which lasted several hours, flooded houses, destroyed household equipment and submerged cars.

Other parts of Owerri were also submerged by the flood as the rain continued till Sunday morning.

The destruction was attributed to the construction of a roundabout and the destruction of the manholes built by the first civilian governor of the state.

A resident of Owerri, Ebube Mbah, said, “Governor Sam Mbakwe of blessed memory built underground tunnels from the World Bank area to Nwaorie, but when Governor Hope Uzodimma came on board, he changed the contractors handling the project awarded by Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

“We spoke out against it and some people said we didn’t wish Imo well. Now, the ugly reality is here with Imo residents as the victims.”

Mrs Nma Olebara, whose car was affected by the flood, called on the state government to come to the rescue of residents of the affected areas.

The retired teacher said, “I was consoling Darlington Ibekwe, whose house was flooded, not knowing that my car had been sucked away.

“I was about to go for Sunday Mass when this happened.”

Ibekwe, whose compound, bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and visitor’s room were flooded, said he lost many valuables to the flood.

“My house is flooded now! The last roundabout at the World Bank estate is an error. Flood can’t be controlled. My compound, bedroom, kitchen, sitting room, conveniences and visitor’s room are submerged and my properties and documents destroyed,” he lamented.

But the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media, Modestus Nwamkpa, said the problem was not caused by the Uzodimma administration.

He stated that the administration inherited a very bad road network in the state, adding that the government was addressing the issue with the ongoing construction projects in the area.

“The flooding is not the making of this administration. We inherited a very bad road network from the past administration, but the governor is not relenting as he is currently carrying out massive road construction projects in Owerri,” Nwamkpa said.

It’s Devastating Burying My Son That should Bury Me, Life Is Indeed Unfair To Me -Woman Cries Out

It’s devastating burying son that should inter me, life’s unfair – Mum of Imo guard killed by truck

Chidiebube Okeoma

When some residents and traders left their homes on Saturday, May 1, for Nkwommiri market in the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, some of them were unaware that they wouldn’t return alive. Others who escaped death by a whisker are currently nursing broken legs and arms. The disaster was caused by a truck which lost control and rammed into the market. The market holds every four days and situated near a river.
There were conflicting figures regarding the number of casualties. But our correspondent’s investigation revealed that about 10 people died in the disaster. As of now, the whereabouts of a 12-year-old boy hawking bread is still unknown. While many suspected that the boy was buried beneath the truck which crashed into the Nwangele River close to the Nwangele LGA, others hoped that he might have escaped. But the boy’s family is worried because he had yet to return home days after the incident.

The incident which happened around noon at the intersection between Anara-Orlu and Amaigbo–Amaraku Expressway left many wounded and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Our correspondent gathered that the truck which was descending a hill, lost control and killed some women traders before plunging into the Nwangele Rivers.

An eyewitness, Adolphus Adolphus, said some of the victims were pushed into the nearby river by the truck. He stated that the community members battled to retrieve those trapped between the truck and some affected vehicles.

He said, “The worst happened that day. A truck lost control and killed women trading on the road at Nkwommiri. About 10 people were crushed to death and many others trapped.’’

Another eyewitness, Frank Ozuruigbo, said that the community worked with government officials to rescue those trapped.

Speaking about the incident, the state police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, said two people died on the spot and efforts were made to rescue those trapped.

One of the victims and 46-year-old guard, Emeka Orisakwe’s body parts were dismembered by the truck. He was buried the same day in his compound at Umuozu in the Nwangele LGA of the state.

It was a highly emotional moment when our correspondent visited his family house a day after his interment. While his younger brother, Chidozie Orisakwe, who just returned from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was seen rolling on top of his elder brother’s grave, their aged mother wept profusely.

The 78-year-old widow, Mrs Margaret Orisakwe, told our correspondent that death had dealt her and the family a big blow.

The widow who spoke to our correspondent in Igbo said that it was sad that she buried her first son who she hoped would give her a “befitting burial” whenever death comes.

She stated that when her deceased son told her on Saturday morning that he was going to the market, she was unaware that he wouldn’t return alive.

The distraught widow said, “Life has dealt me a big blow. We saw each other in the morning of Saturday. He told me he was going to the market. That was the last conversation I had with him. The next thing I heard was that my son who was full of life has been killed by a truck that lost control. This is unfortunate. If at this age I buried my son, a first son for that matter, who will then bury me when I die?

“I think life is wicked to me. This wasn’t my bargain with life and my son never told me he was going to die nor did he tell me I was the one to bury him. I am devastated. I think life has cheated me and it is devastating to say the least.”

It was gathered that Emeka Orisakwe, Chinedu Nwaiwu and a tricycle driver, Emeka Anukwute, all died in the tricycle, while 37-year-old Chisom Nwodo, from Enugu State, who was on a visit to Isiala Mbano and returning to Anambra State, was confined to a wheelchair.

Our correspondent who visited Nwaiwu’s house in Umuozu, observed a pensive mood in an atmosphere ridden with anguish. His kinsmen were seen digging his grave in preparation for the burial of the 44-year-old contractor. His eldest brother, Mr Chijioke Nwaiwu, cried uncontrollably as sympathisers tried in futility to console him.

Many were baffled that Nwaiwu, who was conscious after the incident and revealed that Orisakwe was trapped beneath the truck, died the next day at Umuguma General Hospital, Owerri, where he was transferred due to internal bleeding.

Nwaiwu’s parents were dead and he had yet to marry before the calamity. His elder brother, Chijioke, who spoke with Saturday PUNCH, said “I am in pain. Chinedu is dead. He died in the accident and we planned to bury him immediately. There was no sign that he was going to die as he was strong after the accident. He was taken to Umuguma General Hospital, Owerri where he gave up the ghost on Sunday morning.”

At Amaigbo, the family house of a popular tricycle driver, Anukwute, popularly known as Day-by-Day, tears flowed unendingly. His widowed mother, Amaka Anukwute, was grief-stricken when our correspondent arrived in the compound.

While sympathisers tried to console her, the 63-year-old widow said, “Yes, I am his wife. I am his first wife. I am finished. He was just 30-year- old.”

Our correspondent observed as a pastor placed a hand on the woman and prayed God to console her.

The woman, who managed to speak with our correspondent in her emotional state, said, “He was only 30 years old. He was not married. He was the one who moulded the blocks on the floor. He planned to first build a house and send his younger brother abroad before talking about marriage.”

At the Joint Special Hospital in Amaigbo, one of the nurses told our correspondent that eight emergency cases were rushed to the hospital.

Some of the survivors who spoke to our correspondent on hospital beds said that they could not remember anything other than that they were at the accident scene and later taken to hospitals.

Nwodo who lost three people in the tricycle she was in also said she couldn’t recall anything.

The 27-year-old said, “I am from Enugu State. My mother and I came for a burial in Mbano. I was travelling to Orlu from where I would board a vehicle to Anambra State when the accident happened. I couldn’t remember anything because I lost consciousness only to regain consciousness at the hospital. I was told that the driver and two other persons in the tricycle I was in died. I sustained a bone fracture and that is why I am in a wheelchair. I want the government to help me so that I can walk again.”

Another survivor, Chidi Ohiaeri, who was badly injured, also spoke with our correspondent from the hospital bed. Surrounded by his wife and relatives, the 50-year-old father of five children, said he was a commercial motorcyclist.

The survivor who managed to utter some words said that he was carrying a passenger when the accident occurred. He said that he couldn’t remember other things.

Another survivor, who was Ohiaeri’s passenger, Austin Onyeanufuru, from Umuchoko-Umuozu, said that he was happy to be alive. He said he would return to the hospital for further medical examination to know if he had internal injury.

Mrs Happiness Nmezi from Umuanya, who spoke to our correspondent on the phone from her hospital bed, said she was at the market to buy some things when the incident occurred. Nmezi added that she was unconscious thereafter and only woke up at the hospital.

Our correspondent who visited the scene of the accident observed that an angry mob had set the truck ablaze. Other vehicles involved in the crash were seen at the scene.

A community leader, Valentine Uzoechi, told Saturday PUNCH that the incident was avoidable if the government had expanded the raiding and made the place comfortable for trading activities.

However, a member representing Nwangele/Nkwerre/ Njaba/ Isu federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Ugonna Ozurigbo, who promised to pay the survivors’ hospital bills, told our correspondent that he would use his position to attract Federal Government’s attention to the market.

Insecurity: Reps Seeks Suspension Of Proposed Population Census

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to immediately suspend the proposed 2021 population and housing census to be conducted by the National Population Commission due to insecurity.

A member of the House, Shehu Beji (APC-Niger) while moving a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House in Abuja yesterday, bemoaned the spate of insecurity in the country.

Beji said the current insecurity had displaced numerous citizens, dwellers of various communities, to be captured in the exercise.

He noted that some displaced persons had even crossed over to neighbouring countries for refuge and would not be captured if the census was conducted.

He noted that with the overwhelming security challenges, expecting accuracy in any census conducted would be ‘like passing an elephant through the eye of a needle’.

“In the circumstance, a large number of Nigerians have fled their homes, while many others are being held captive by kidnappers.

“As such, conducting such census without them, means infringing on their constitutional right. Posting enumerators or ad hoc staff to volatile areas of the nation in the name of conducting census will be irrational, as it would be like giving them out to criminals,” he said.

According to him, conducting population and housing census in the current economic recession will only waste the hard earned resources of this country. as the outcome will be inconsequential.

He said the country’s presidential election was envisaged to commence and end within the first quarter of 2023, as such, the whole of 2022 would mostly be about campaigns, leaving no room for census activities.

The House, therefore, called on the Federal Government to suspend the upcoming census exercise until security of the country was stabilised, while mandating the relevant committee to inquire about the work plans of the NPC on the census.

It also resolved to invite the chairman of the NPC, to clarify issues relating to feasibility of conducting the census amid insecurity.

22,000 Nigerian Children Infected With HIV Annually -UNICEF

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has said that about 22,000 Nigerian children get infected with HIV annually.

UNICEF’s Chief of Management for Results, Claes Johansson, who disclosed this at the national dialogue meeting for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, PMTCT, of HIV in Nigeria on Tuesday, said about two-thirds of the infected children do not get treatment.

He described the meeting as a crucial one for Nigeria to discuss ways of eliminating vertical transmission of HIV, also known as mother-to-child transmission.

He said: “We are working within a framework to map out a strategy that we will work with for the next five years along with Nigeria.

“Ending the vertical transmission of HIV/AIDS is one of the key actions that will also help end pandemics, which is what the global world is looking forward to.

“However, we have so much to do and a long way to go, especially with mother-to-child-transmission taking about 32 percent and one out of seven being infected on a monthly basis is a Nigerian with about 22,000 infected yearly.

“This is a situation that is simply not acceptable and for all these children who get infected, about two-third of them do not get treatment.

“So, we in the global community want the Nigerian government to tell us what their sustainable strategic plans are and what they need to eliminate vertical transmission. The UN and its affiliated agencies and bodies are always willing to help Nigeria put an end to PMTCT.

“Let us know your priorities so that we can assist and help map out strong, sustainable ways to eliminating vertical transmission.”

In his remarks, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, Gambo Aliyu, emphasised the need for a better strategy to deal with PMTCT.

He explained that in 2016, there were about 13,000 infected pregnant mothers who were not getting treatment, which had risen to 421,000 as of 2019.

Aliyu attributed the rise to the fact that many pregnant women were not visiting health facilities, adding that part of the strategies discussed at the dialogue was how to get treatment to the women if they were not willing to come to the facilities.

Betta Edu, Cross River’s commissioner for health, who spoke on behalf of health commissioners of all the 36 states, said it was important to work alongside other HIV-related organisations in order to make the PMTCT a success.

Insecurity: Has Uzodinma Run Out Ideas – Collins Opuozor

Chief Hope Uzodinma, who is now resident in Abuja, visited Imo State yesterday. Upon arrival, he went ahead almost immediately to launch what he termed Advanced Operation Search and Flush, which reflects his only initiative and sole strategy to stemming the conflagration of insecurity that has engulfed Imo State. What really took place during the launch was a display of some vehicles procured for the law enforcement agencies in the State. That was all. Or maybe it is necessary to mention that Uzodinma’s long speech only focussed on, and can be summarized as, a threat to crush all landlords in Imo whose tenants are smokers. And, for Uzodinma, a “wonderful” security architecture had been born.

First, it is important to state very quickly that any government that reduces security to a caricature does not deserve to exist. In political theory, government comes into being for the sake of life, and continues to exist for the sake of good life. When government fails to fulfill this primary obligation, which is the protection of lives, civil society ultimately relapses into Hobbesian pre-political state of nature where life is nasty, brutish, solitary, poor and short. A mighty man can be murdered in his sleep, a great man overcome by great numbers, and a strong man overwhelmed by a confederation of the weak.

It was in March 2020 that Uzodinma first came up with this very same idea of Operation Search and Flush. He launched it amid fanfare. However, between March 2020 and January 2021, crime in the State soared to a new height. Some parts of the State, like Douglas Road, Okwudor axis on Orlu Road, and Onitsha Road, particularly from Control Post to Ogbaku, were taken over almost entirely by armed criminal elements. A Catholic Bishop in Owerri was once a victim of the unmitigated kidnappings in the State.

There was a particular incident that must never be forgotten. In the peak of the lockdown which was induced by Covid-19, truckloads of young men were being transported in the State from the other parts of the country, notably the North. In one of the instances, the Head of Uzodinma’s Taskforce on Covid-19 and former INEC Chairman, openly admitted that they saw those hundreds of aliens loaded in trucks, but allowed them to pass.

The big question now is: Who were those people and where were they headed. This is a difficult question to answer. But we may reflect back a bit to two petitions written by an Igbo group named ASETU to the former President of the USA, Donald Trump, and the United Nations respectively during the lockdown, both of which raised an alarm that aliens were being imported into Igboland to occupy the forests so as to create crisis and insecurity in the region after the lockdown.

If today the lockdown has been eased, and crisis is raging in the land, does that not justify the fears of the petitioners? What does this say about the security architecture in Imo which could not arrest the aliens seen in their hundreds being conveyed into Imo State during the lockdown? Who were those aliens in trucks caught by Uzodinma’s Covid-19 Taskforce and allowed to pass? Why did the Operation Search and Flush not apprehend them?

What Uzodinma has done with the relaunch of the ineffective Operation Search and Flush is to put an old wine in a new wineskin. He has run out of ideas. He is now recycling a failed initiative. There is something called policy evaluation. It is a fundamental part of the public policy process. No serious government would evaluate the performance of the so-called Operation Search and Flush and come to the conclusion that it should continue, even when the rate of crime in State keeps rising, and the hues and cries of extortions becoming deafening.

The truth is that Uzodinma is at a loss with what security means and how it can be attained. To be sure, there are two interrelated ways that the misrule of Uzodinma has continued to fan the embers of insecurity.

First, the government has refused to prioritize job creation. They have no program, no plan and no agenda to intervene in the unemployment miasma in the State. On the authority of the NBS, Imo State is currently the unemployment capital of Nigeria, with 82% of its employable social category completely unemployed. Security begins with disabling those structures that expose the people to crime, and first in this regard is creation of opportunities. It is cheaper to train people and engage them than to buy guns and vehicles, and build prisons. When people find a pathway out of poverty, they can hardly resort to crime. It is called soft security.

Second is Uzodinma’s deliberate policy to stifle the local government system. For almost seventeen months, no local government area in Imo can boast of doing any project, and the whereabouts of their funds cannot be told. This has deprived rural dwellers of opportunities and induced rural-urban migration, which has concomitantly led to an increase in criminality in the urban areas. No government that is serious about addressing insecurity would strangulate the local government system in a state where opportunities in the cities are scare, or even absent, and where over 70% of the

population reside in the rural areas. This is a disaster! The insecurity in Imo is organically tied to the regime of bad governance in the State. No ifs, ands or buts can do any magic until the issue is tackled from its taproot.

Soldiers Killed A Business Man In His In Owerri Car; Lie Against Him

Soldiers kill businessman in car at Owerri checkpoint, lie against victim

Five days after allegedly killing a 100-level student of the Imo State University, Divine Nwaneri, in front of the state Government House, soldiers have allegedly shot and killed a businessman, Noel Chigbu.

The victim’s elder brother and spokesman for the family, Tobechi Chigbu, told PUNCH Metro on Monday that the military men at the Amakohia flyover in Owerri killed Noel around 10pm on Friday.

He said Noel was shot dead on the day he took delivery of his new Camry car and was driving home at the close of work.

The distraught Tobechi said Noel was killed after dropping off his friend and was driving home.

He told our correspondent that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the state was the one, who told the family that the soldiers said that they shot him because he violated their checkpoint rule.

Tobechi said, “Noel was one of my young brothers. He would have been 39 on May 18, but unfortunately, he was shot dead on the day he took delivery of his new vehicle. His corpse was dumped at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri by the soldiers, who killed him.

“The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations told us that the military men, who brought his car to the command headquarters, said they killed him for violating their checkpoint rule.”

He said the family would ensure that the soldiers, who killed his brother, were identified and prosecuted.

Tobechi said, “Noel was the owner of Shawarma Zone in front of the Home Away Palace by Ukaigwe Hospital, Akwakuma junction, Owerri. He just dropped of his friend, who also does the same business with him in front of the Amakohia Market. It was around 10pm on Friday, April 30. His friend, whom he dropped off, said it was not up to three minutes after he alighted from the vehicle when he heard gunshots in the destination Noel drove to. He didn’t know that it was his friend, who was shot by the soldiers.

“His (Noel’s) whereabouts became unknown as he didn’t return home that night. His wife became worried and started calling us. The number was ringing and nobody was picking it until about 5.30 in the evening of the following day. One person picked it and said that he was a policeman at the control room at the state police command headquarters in Owerri and asked us to come.

“At first, we felt he had a problem with someone without knowing that the military men had killed him and dumped his corpse in a morgue at the FMC, Owerri. On reaching the police command headquarters, my brother identified his new car and when we approached the car, we found out that the back windscreen was shot. All the four tyres were deflated. We also saw blood on the driver’s seat. Chika Chigbu, my younger brother, immediately sensed danger.

“The front windscreen and all the window glasses were intact. Only the back screen was shattered by gunshots.”

He added, “When we got there, they directed us to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, who told us that soldiers brought the vehicle around 1am on Saturday. The solders dropped his phone, the car key and a bunch of keys to his house with the police. He also said the military guys dropped N5,400 belonging to my brother.

“At first, he said the military men didn’t want to make any statement, but the police insisted and reluctantly in a quarter page sheet, the soldiers wrote that the owner of the vehicle violated their checkpoint rule and they shot and killed him. They also wrote that the relatives of the owner of the vehicle should be referred to the FMC in Owerri if they come around.”

Tobechi said the family would make a proper presentation to the military to demand justice for his brother.

“Noel’s wife is four months pregnant as we speak. He had a son, who turned two years a day after my brother was killed by soldiers. His daughter is only four years. We want to ensure that an innocent and hardworking young man like my brother gets justice. He was killed by people who are paid by our taxes, people who were supposed to protect him,” he added.

When contacted, the spokesman for the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, Owerri, Capitan Babatunde Zubairu, said that he was not aware of the incident.

On a further inquiry, he said he would only be aware if the family makes an official presentation to the military.

Bad News As Kaduna Varsity Abductors Vow To Kill More Students Tuesday Except Government Pays Ransom.

Kaduna varsity abductors vow to kill more students Tuesday except govt. pays ransom.

The criminals behind the abduction of 23 Greenfield University students and staff have threatened to kill the remaining students of the Kaduna-based institution in their captivity if by Tuesday government fails to pay the ransom they had earlier demanded.

In an interview with the Hausa Service of the Voice of America, the bandits behind the April 20 abductions also said they recently killed five of their victims to show government’s failure.

The bandits had made a demand of ₦800 million after abducting the students, but three days after their demands were not met, they killed three students before murdering an additional two a few days later.

A leader of the bandit group who identified himself as Sani Idris Jalingo, in an interview with the VOA, said if the Kaduna State Government or the families of the abducted students fail to pay a ransom of ₦100 million as well as provide them with 10 brand new Honda motorcycles by Tuesday, the remaining students will be murdered.

Jalingo, who said the families of the students have already paid N55 million to them, claimed that they had used the money to feed the students.

“We heard the utterances of the Kaduna State governor (Nasir El-Rufai) that he will not pay any ransom to bandits to purchase additional weapons. He also said he informed his family that he will not pay any ransom if any of them gets kidnapped. So, we want to show that the Nigerian government has failed and that is why we killed the students,” he said.

Two of the abducted students who spoke during the interview also appealed to the government and their parents to take the threats seriously.

One of the students identified as a grandchild of the 18th Emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris, called on the government to negotiate with their captors.

“They mean what they say because they have already killed some of us,” said the student, identified as Idris.

The remains of three of the kidnapped students were discovered on April 23, throwing Kaduna into panic and confusion.

Three days later, two more students were murdered by their abductors, bringing the death toll from the attack to six. A member of the school staff was murdered by the criminals known locally as “bandits” on the night of the abduction.

Nigeria Over-Stressed, Over-Stretched Beyond Bounds Of Acceptability – Bode George

FORMER Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George, Monday, expressed worry over the security challenges confronting the country, noting that the situation is now over-stressed and over-stretched beyond the bounds of acceptability.

George, in his speech entitled: ‘Nigeria: Time to chart a new direction’, said Nigerian polity is now straying towards its elastic limit.

While he called for urgent steps to be taken to curb the violence in the country, he said Nigerians cannot continue like this.

His words: “The Nigerian polity is now straying towards its elastic limit. It is now over -stressed and over-stretched beyond the bounds of acceptability. Our survival as a nation is genuinely being questioned from the desert to the sea.

“Violence sprouts everywhere, from the distant outpost of Ajangbadi in Lagos, to the farthest reaches of Malum-Fatori in Borno, from Kiṣi in Oke-Ogun to Odiani in the swamps of Delta- our nation gradually descends into a dangerous gangland where the rule of the bayonet and clubs seems to be the norm. Surely, we can’t continue like this. Our survival as a people is to reverse the ruinous course and retrieve ourselves from the gaping chasm that confronts us all.

“This is the time to change the path of old, to look beyond what hobbles our progress, to redefine our value system, to rejig and restructure the various anomalies that presently hinder the greater possibilities of the Nigerian union.

“The challenges before us are far beyond the confines of partisan politics. The turmoil within the Nigerian entity is about the twisted present situation. It is about who we are. It is about what we ought to be. It is about the greater tomorrow.

“Unfortunately, the sway and the swing of the present political culture do not favor the triumph of merit. It does not favor the promotion of excellence. It does not encourage the accommodation of hard work. And it discourages the blind indifference to ethnic or sectarian provenance.

“Alas, our political culture is still much engrossed in the glorification of cronyism over intellect, the celebration of charlatans over patriotic commitment, the narrow worship of the gains of the moment over the truth and the base withdrawal into nepotistic lager over the greater good.

“Surely, no nation can long endure on this limiting vision. We live in a very competitive global village where the entrepreneurial drives are often predicated on the ethical draw and the business friendly nature of the environment. Global conglomerates like Twitter, Kia, Hyundai, Facebook and so many others are trooping to Ghana, Rwanda and South Africa.

“And our nation is losing an estimated $29 billion every year due to epileptic power supply. This is not sustainable. Electrical Power is the very life-blood of all industrial revolutions. It is the fuel of all economic development.

“A nation without efficient power supply cannot rise into the bright dawn of the digital civilization. It is stuck forever in the bleak dark side of economic underdevelopment and teeters inevitably on economic ruination.”

Speaking on the way forward, the PDP leader said: “Indeed, something must give way to spur a Nigerian rebirth and renewal lest we become the permanent invalid giant of Africa.

“To change cause, to redefine our path, we must cultivate the essential ingredients of meritocracy as the critical building blocks of modern nations. Wherever young, vibrant, intelligent minds are given a pride of place to steer the destinies of their nations, such societies invariably are widening the opportunities for competitive.

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT MOHAMMADU BUHARI. RE: THE STATE OF INSECURITY IN THE NATION – Anyim Pius Anyim

ANYIM PIUS ANYIM LLB, LLM

3rd May, 2021

Mohammedu Buhari, GCFR
President
Federal.Republic of Nigeria
Aso Villa
Abuja

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT MOHAMMADU BUHARI.
RE: THE STATE OF INSECURITY IN THE NATION:

MY SUGGESTION

Mr. President, you may recall that on the 5th of October, 2018, I had audience with you in your office. In that meeting, with your then Chief of Staff, the late Mallam Abba Kyari, in attendance, we touched on a number of issues including the insecurity in the country and about which you directed that I should do a short brief on my suggestion and forward to your Chief of Staff.

Mr. President may wish to know that I did as you directed and submitted my suggestion to your then Chief of Staff on the 20th of October, 2018.

Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim

I have decided to do this open letter just to be sure that it will get to you, because I suspect that the private one did not get to you. Most importantly, I would not have bothered to write you this letter if the unfortunate and avoidable circumstances we have found ourselves in, as a nation, have not continued to fester to the magnitude of threatening the fabric of the nation. This letter, therefore, is to reconvey my earlier suggestion which, I want to believe, did not get to you.

PREAMBLE

The perilous threats to our national sovereignty at the time you took over the reigns of power in 2015 were the Boko Haram insurgence in the North East; the armed agitation in the Niger Delta Region, and the IPOB agitation in the South East. Mr. President, on your assumption of office the most striking promise you made to the nation was to tackle insecurity with emphasis on reclaiming the territories occupied by Boko Haram. I must admit that you did approach the insecurity challenge with commendable determination but unfortunately, the challenge, with time, became hydra headed and no doubt went
beyond your control.

Before I proceed with my suggestion, may I first put in perspective the basis of the position I will canvass in this letter.

I wish to note that every violent agitation originates from a non-violent agitation that was not attended to. Today, Nigeria is bedeviled with violent and non-violent agitations. It is also a fact that the current violent agitations originated from non-violent agitations e.g.,Boko Haram started as a non-violent procession; the herders/farmers clashes which has
degenerated into a deadly conflict with many states now bloody theaters of war; ethnic conflicts in Kaduna, Ebonyi, Cross River, Benue, Plateau states etc.

Anyim Pius with former President Jonathan

which are escalating to an unmanageable scale; Armed Banditry in virtually all states of the federation
particularly Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto which has overwhelmed the Law enforcement agencies, kidnaping which has become occupational in most parts of the country.

To worsen matters, Boko Haram, has acquired new impetus that they now overrun the military and have even expanded their base to Niger State. IPOB has become a regional challenge. On the non-violent side, agitations for restructuring are scaling up in
momentum, ethnic consciousness and allegiance even among the elite are far eroding national concerns. All these and many more coupled with gross downturn in the national economic, social and political space has become an apparent threat to our nationhood.

I am to add, that it must be known that military actions or even foreign help alone cannot bring permanent solutions to ethnic conflicts or nationality agitations. Mr. President, you need to create a platform to hear Nigerians out.

MY SUGGESTION

THE SEARCH FOR SOLUTION MUST INVOLVE THE CITIZENS

In the build-up to securing the Nigerian Independence, the Colonial Administration were confronted with reservations by minority tribes in the three regions of Northern, Eastern and Western Nigeria about fears of domination by the majority tribes. In other to find a
lasting solution, the Colonial Administration appointed a commission to “ENQUIRE INTO THE FEARS OF MINORITIES AND MEANS OF ALLAYING THEM”.

The Willink’s Commission of 1957, named after its chairman Mr. Harry Willink, produced a far-reaching report after extensive hearings of the complaints and suggestions from the people. It can be argued that no other document in the history of Nigeria has had far-
reaching impact on our political structure than the Willink’s report. It guided the debates in subsequent constitutional conferences before the independence; gave structure to the emergent Constitutions and indeed gave health to the socio-political structure of the nation at independence.

The greatest achievement of Willink’s Commission is that its report provided the colonial administration and the nation an in-depth understanding of the nature, dimensions and magnitude of the fears of the minority tribes. Accordingly, its recommended solutions became an official position and was easily accepted to be constitutionalised as a long-term measure.

Anyim Pius former SGF

There is no gainsaying that reservations about the continued existence of Nigeria is building up to a dangerous time bomb. I make bold to say that no solution except one birthed by an independently conducted engagement with fact-based recommendations arrived at with the participation of the citizens will provide an enduring solution.

The most outstanding recommendation of the Willink’s Commission as a long-time solution is the inclusion of a Fundamental Human Rights Chapter in the constitution. It was recommended that the inclusion of the Fundamental Human Rights Chapter in the constitution will protect all citizens, including the minority stock from any governmental and or majority bloc abuses. I must say at this point that it was the recommendations of the Willink’s commission that gave all the component groups in Nigeria the comfort to go into the union at independence.

It has become apparent that the foundation of the various agitations in Nigeria today is that the comfort provided at independence by the Willink’s Commissions Report is no longer working. I make bold to recommend that Mr. President should make history by empaneling another commission of inquiry to inquire into the violent and non-violent agitations in Nigeria and make recommendations on the immediate-, short- and long-term solutions as a way of first de-escalating the rising tension in the land and a process for the renewal of our march to nationhood.

It is important to note that in a democracy, no action is deemed successful or completed until the buy-in-of the people is secured through a democratic process. This buy-in- is an imperative that is yet to be pursued in the fight against violent agitations in Nigeria. I must say that as long as the people are not part of the process of finding solutions to the conflicts, a permanent solution will be a mirage.

THE BENEFITS OF SUCH A COMMISSION

i. The de-escalation of the current tension in the country and creation of a platform for exchange of ideas.

ii. It is a natural Governmental process of addressing challenges of public importance. The report of such a commission will put in proper perspective and provide basis for further action.

iii. It will offer the citizenry the opportunity and platform to share their concerns and to be heard. This helps to build confidence and reduce animosity and mutual suspicion.

iv. It identifies the immediate and remote causes of the current challenges and provide a framework for their resolution.

v. Such a commission will aim not only to unravel the remote and immediate causes but also determine the various dimensions and define them accordingly. E.g.
democratic agitations will be separated from violent crimes to the understanding of all. It will also capture the reasons for the agitations and the Justice thereto.

vi. Such a Commission will propose immediate-, short- and long-term solutions and develop a roadmap towards addressing them. Such roadmap used as a national reference document would guide further interactions and process for implementation.

vii. Such document will be the foundation for a new Nigeria anchored on negotiated settlement derived from the legitimacy bestowed by citizen participation and the credibility of the commission.

Above is submitted for your kind consideration Sir.

Security Challenge In Imo: Missing 300-level Law Student Found In Imo Hospital Mortuary

Missing 300-Level Law student found in Imo hospital mortuary

Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri

The body of a 300-level Law student of the Imo State University, Owerri, Kingsley Chiwueze, has been found five days after he went missing.

Chiwueze was on Monday declared missing after efforts made to find him proved abortive.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased, who was deeply involved in students’ politics, hailed from the Oguta Local Government Area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Chiwueze had two weeks ago made his intention known to vie for the office of Senate President of the National Association of Imo State Students.

The President, Students Union Government, IMSU, Arinze Oguike, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, said the corpse was found in the morgue of the Umuguma General Hospital, Owerri, on Sunday.

He said students of the institution stormed the mortuary and the attendant told them that the corpse was deposited by the management of the St. Joseph Hospital, Wetheral, Owerri.

The student leader said, “The attendant told us that Chiwueze’s corpse was brought by people from the St. Joseph hospital, Wetheral. We will go to the hospital to find out how they took custody of the student.”

One Darlington Ibekwe, said, “Kingsley hailed from the Oguta Local Government Area. Kingsley was declared missing on Monday and was just found; it happened that he was one of the victims of the shooting on Douglas Road and the most painful thing about all of this is the fact that the state government’s media handlers have come out to say that no life was lost to the security challenges.

“When Divine, an IMSU student, was shot dead last week, someone called her irresponsible and asked what a girl would be doing outside by that time.”

When contacted, the IMSU spokesman, Ralph Njokuobi, said he would communicate with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Akah, about the discovery.

The police spokesman for the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that he had not been briefed about the latest development.

Truth And Lies About Mary Daniel The Amputee Bottle Water Hawker In Lagos

By Jade Goodluck

Yesterday I made a post as regards this developing story on the physically challenged girl & I tagged it Enemies from Within (Household Enemies)

In order to satisfy my curiosity I carried my Amebo legs to Oshodi Bolade Bus stop yesterday to find out if actually Mary sells Pure water inside the traffic there or it was staged managed as they told us!

I knew the sets of people to ask as to get the confirmed Info! I showed her photo to two different ladies selling pure water if they know her & both said YES! She shuttles between Bolade & Iyana Brown street to sell pure water! For those that knows Oshodi very well you will know what am talking about!

They went further to say at times she crosses the road to sell to motorists but they have warned her not to endanger her life becos of her predicament!!

I went again to those selling on the streets (slippers, make-up & ofada rice) beside each other as I bought two wraps of ofada rice with meat & minerals to wash it down! Then I stylishly began her story! Infact everyone seems to know her in Oshodi by now! She actually Hawks pure water there!!

After I had finished the Amebo investigations I quietly entered the bus & went home as I already have my answers.

Now Mary Daniels have come out with her own story of why she lied that her dad was dead! Remember I said sperm donor, Living Dead & Household Enemies!! May God deliver us from them all..

Read her Interview….

Why I lied that my father was dead — Amputee Hawker

27-seven-year-old Lagos amputee hawker, Mary Daniel, who was recently exposed for lying about her condition, has apologized to Nigerians.

The single mother of one received N25million donations from Nigerians who were moved by claims that she lost her leg in an accident that claimed the life of all passengers, including her parents, a claim that was later reported to be false.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, she said, “My father abandoned me since I was involved in this accident, there was no one to take care of me, nothing! That was why I said he’s dead. But my mother is truly dead. I had an accident truly; I was not amputated from birth.

It was my grandmother that called me that she does not have anything, that if I have, I should send it. I said let me give her small money so she can use it to manage herself for now. I wanted to send N100, 000, I sent N200, 000 instead. She called me and asked why I sent her such a meagre amount, that, do I think she doesn’t know what’s going on, that how will people be contributing money for me and all I do is to send N200, 000.

She said I’d rather send more money or she will expose me and I will go back to selling pure water. I was shocked and asked what sort of thing is this. She’s my maternal grandmother, she is really old.

My aunties and uncles from my mother’s side are the ones pushing my grandmother into this and if she continues like this, later she will regret it. I have told her to calm down that I will take care of her but she refused. She is busy following her children around, making videos, that’s their business.

Nigerians should forgive me. People that stay on the streets and in noisy places, they hardly have a settled mind and I said my father is late so Nigerians can help me. I made a big mistake; Nigerians should please forgive me.”

I Have No Regret Identifying With Mary Daniel, She Needs Help -Ugwumba Uche Nwosu

I have no regret identifying with Mary Daniel. She needs help and I helped out…Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.

…I don’t mind helping her more as the spirit directs

The Global President of Ugwumba Center for Leadership development in Africa , Ugwumba Uche Nwosu has insisted that he has no regret coming to the aide of Kogi State born single mother amputee who hawks bottled water at Oshodi , Lagos State .

Ugwumba Uche Nwosu made this known through his media Aide, Nwadike Chikezie .

Responding to Media vibes , Ugwumba Uche Nwosu wondered why the sudden attention on the lady now that fortune has smiled her way. He noted that nobody recognised her all this while she was in penury and struggling to live .

Chief Nwosu informed that what attracted his sympathy attention was nothing other than her amputee condition and also a single parent of a little girl , not the stories .

Of course , when I saw her on social media , it was her picture that got my interest , seeing an amputee hawking bottled water in busy place like Lagos , competing with those with complete body , it was a sight of sympathy to behold. All the stories attached are secondary, he added.

Clarifying , on the issue of detecting lies in her story , he maintained that it might be diversionary in other for some people to lay hands on her money and advised that what should be paramount is how to establish her real good and not otherwise.” As she said that she want to open a super market , that should be the focus and not otherwise “.

He used the opportunity to thank all those who responded to her help after he brought her to limelight .

“I heard that she has made up to 25 million Naira . That’s good and enough to change her life for good” .

“God has a way of lifting men and God has not stopped the business of lifting men, only have patience and trust in him” .

Meanwhile, in further argument , the media aide argued that ;

Whether it’s stage managed or not, take it that she was smart enough to think out of the box . That’s what you need to survive in life …idea .

All these stories are targeted attempts to manipulate and swindle her , nothing more .

If it’s true that she lied, why

1. The picture of the so called father is not trending on social media, going viral but nothing like that

2. would they block people from reaching Mary Daniel to hear her own side of the story as every access to her now is blocked .

3. The so called “arrangee” that threatened to expose her , have they finally carried out there threat and who are they ?

4. If they tried blackmailing her because of what they want to gain, why has the authorities yet to arrest them as accomplice ? This is crime too.

5. Are they faceless or as usual “unknown accusers men ” not unknown Gun Men ?

Miyetti Allah: We Will Avenge Death Of Every Herdsman Killed In South-East By Nnamdi Kanu’s IPOB.

We’ll Avenge Death Of Every Herdsman Killed In South-East By Nnamdi Kanu’s IPOB, Miyetti Allah Threatens

Miyetti Allah spokesman lauded the security agencies, adding that they should “intensify efforts” in dealing with all terrorist elements in the country.
One of the umbrella bodies of herdsmen in Nigeria, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, has urged security agencies to deal with “terrorists killing” Fulani herders in the South-East.

Spokesman for the group, Saleh Alhassan, disclosed this while reacting to the killing of one of the commanders of Indigenous People of Biafra gunned down by security operatives last Saturday.

Miyetti Allah group
Police operatives and their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services had killed an IPOB leader, one Commander Ikonso and six other militia members in Imo state.

The IPOB men, who were members of the secessionist group’s security arm, the Eastern Security Network, were killed during an early morning raid on their hideout at Awomama village, Oru East Local Government Area of the state last week.

IPOB has since threatened “madness”, saying the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, will “pay dearly” for the killing of its commander.

But speaking on Thursday to Punch, the Miyetti Allah spokesman lauded the security agencies, adding that they should “intensify efforts” in dealing with all terrorist elements in the country.

He said, “The security agencies should intensify efforts in dealing with all those terrorists killing Fulani herders, burning police stations, prisons and destroying institutions in the South-East.”

Alhassan said at least 50 herders have been killed in the South-East in the last one month, adding that his group would avenge the death of those members.

He said, “So far, more than 50 herders have been killed in the South-East in the last one month, we have the record and the Igbo terrorists led by Nnamdi Kanu will pay for everybody they killed.

“It is unfortunate that they have forgotten history, how we saved a lot of Igbos in the North during the Civil War but now they are killing our people. They are making a grievous mistake. We will take necessary steps, both legal and cultural steps, to avenge the killings of our members.

“They have mobilized all their boys (shoe menders, iron condemn, watch sellers, etc) with small radio, phones and airtime, weapons, arms, matches, for the mayhem.

“These boys were on the ground long ago and have provided them with information about all tracks, roads, residences of people, Churches, Schools etc for a possible and immediate attack.

Tinubu Supports Wife, Warns Nigerians Against Disparaging Security Forces

Nationwide Chaos: Tinubu backs wife, warns Nigerians against disparaging security forces

Bola Tinubu on Thursday said Nigerians outraged by widespread chaos should not disparage security forces. Mr Tinubu’s comments came two days after his wife Senator Remi Tinubu attacked Senator Smart Adeyemi for criticising uncurbed killings, maimings and destruction of assets across the country.

Mr Adeyemi had decried the inability of President Muhammadu Buhari to rein in the crisis, saying the administration should not be too reluctant to seek outside help in addressing the existential challenges.

Mrs Tinubu, who was sitting beside Mr Adeyemi during Tuesday’s plenary, fired back at his colleague, saying his complaints sounded like what opposition politicians or other critics would say.

Mrs Tinubu faced widespread condemnation for her comment, with many describing it as insensitive and a furtherance of her husband’s political strategy to keep quiet amidst raging chaos with the hope that he would get the ruling party’s presidential ticket and succeed Mr Buhari in 2023.

In a thread of tweets on Thursday evening, Mr Tinubu himself weighed in on the matter, saying he was also angered and troubled by ongoing security challenges. He, however, warned that security personnel should not be criticised as a result, saying it would play into the hands of the opponents.

Read Mr Tinubu’s full statement below:

Like all decent Nigerians, I am angered and troubled by the terror and cruelty being visited upon the people of Borno, Yobe, Benue, Niger, Imo and other parts of the nation.

These attacks have caused many to disparage our military and security forces. This we must not do. Valiant men and women serve in our security forces, risking their lives to protect us.

We stand with them. Government also must continue to encourage the security forces to do their utmost to subdue this threat. The lives of innocent Nigerians and the future progress of the nation may lie in the balance.

As a people, we must never surrender to the fearful temptation to blame one another. Regardless of region or religion, we must unite against a common foe. Discord will only invite defeat.

The enemy’s attacks seem to focus on our schools, religious institutions and security forces. They seek to extinguish the light of knowledge and hope by shrouding us in the darkness of fear and brutal ordeal.

We must not tremble. They will be vanquished. In the end, tolerance, justice and compassion shall win the day.

Uzodinma: Dancing On The Graves Of Insecurity Victims

By Collins Opurozor

I feel very sick. My heart bleeds. My eyes are wet. For the life of me, I cannot understand the reason a government would go on air to rationalize the ravages of insecurity and the brutal murder of our fellow citizens. This issue breaks my heart, and I sincerely feel the worst moment to be an Imo person is obviously now.

Today, the Imo State Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, went on air and said a number of things. First, he blamed the innocent IMSU female student and the poor driver who were allegedly shot dead by security operatives close to the Government House for their death, and hailed their killing on the premise that they went close to “a high security area” and that the security operatives acted in line with self-defense.

How could someone talk of self-defense as a justification for the killing of totally unarmed citizens? Not a word of condolence. Not a sign of empathy. Not a show of sympathy to their unfortunate demise. The spokesperson of the government simply heaped the blame for their death on them. This is pathetic!

Those victims were people’s sister and father. They were people’s daughter and brother. They were people’s friend and husband. But their lives were cut short for nothing. Their aspirations were abbreviated. Their dreams were aborted, and they were untimely handed over to death by the bullets. And today, their death is being justified by those whose responsibility it is to protect and shield them from harm.

This is the mindset of the regime: the people deserve every evil that befalls them. Last month in Ihitte Uboma, two siblings were murdered in cold blood by suspected security operatives. There was never any reaction from the regime of Uzodinma.

No visit, no condolence, no investigation! In the aftermath of the invasion of Orlu, dead bodies of innocent citizens littered the streets, and when the missiles unleashed on the people of Orsu by the airstrikes ordered Uzodinma wreaked havoc on the lives and property of the people of that area, nothing was heard from the regime. On a daily basis, Imo people pass through the most excruciating torment, torture and even violent death as a result of insecurity, yet the regime looks the other way, and Uzodinma hibernates in a cozy lodge in a faraway Abuja.

The latest outing by Uzodinma’s commissioner has lent credence to all insinuations that the safety of lives and property in Imo State is the least of the worries of Uzodinma. Any flickering hope therefore that the regime would address the insecurity in the State and protect the people was today dashed completely. But what hurts Imo people even more unbearably is the celebration of the death of our fellow citizens by this regime of infamy.

Yet, going on air to accuse radio presenters of working for the opposition simply because they sought to set the records straight about the origins and drivers of insecurity in the State was a new and condemnable low by the regime.

When Uzodinma went to Abuja and openly claimed that he ordered the carnage in Orlu, what response was the regime expecting? What reactions was Uzodinma anticipating from those he had earlier described as militants? It is nightmarish that responsible governments across the country are working out modalities to stem the tide of insecurity, and in Imo the regime is looking for whom to accuse and whom to blame.

It is time for Hope Uzodinma and his appointees to stop dancing on the graves of our dead compatriots. The streets of Imo are red with blood and the Uzodinma must act fast to save the people who he pretends to govern.

Nigerian Boy Jumped Into River Thames In London

20-year-old Nigerian boy drowns after jumping into River Thames to rescue women who fell from London bridge

20-year-old Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole has died after jumping into the River Thames in a bid to help a woman who fell off London Bridge, in United Kingdom.

The Sun UK reports that Adewole saw the woman fall into the river and jumped in the water along with another man just after midnight on Saturday, April 25. Emergency services, including the coastguard and police marine units, were called to the scene to help all three people who were in the water.

They rescued the woman and one of the men who jumped into the river to help her, but were unable to locate the other. His body was tragically found six hours later.

Jimi was on his way home from work at fine dining restaurant The Cinnamon Club in Westminster when he spotted the woman on the bridge. After seeing her fall into the water he dived in to try and save her, along with his colleague.

Describing what happened, his dad, Michael Adewola, 63, said, “Him and his friend were coming from work together, and they called the police, and saw what was happening. They wanted to help and tried to speak to her but wanted to leave it to the police.

He is a hero, and always will be, I can’t bring him back but I want him to be remembered forever for what he did, it was just like him to want to always try and help others. He would help anyone that needed it. I am proud of my son, he is amazing, but as a family we are devastated. We are just glad the woman is alive too.”

Governor Hope Uzodinma’s Location Still Unknown As Imo Burns

By Collins Opurozor

The conflagration of insecurity has continued to rage in Imo State. In the last twenty-four hours, unsavoury reports have kept emanating from all corners of the State. From the inferno in Okigwe to the bloodbath in Ehime; from the pyromancy in Ama Hausa to the armed robberies at Akwakuma and Ohii Junctions, one question that keeps agitating the minds of Imo people remains: Where is our supposed governor?

Reports have it that Uzodinma is somewhere in Abuja, hiding among a group of women known as Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) at Mambilla Barracks. It was further reported that he has been pledging to support efforts of the women “geared towards improving the well-being of the families and wives of the gallant officers who stops (sic) at nothing to keep us safe and protect our territorial integrity”.

If these reports were anything to go by, Imo is really in one almighty catastrophe. How could a governor, with the mandate to protect the lives and property of the people, abscond to a faraway land in the face of a calamity which is wont to consume his state? Which governor will prioritize skirting around a group of women in Abuja over and above the safety of his people? If actually Uzodinma is in Abuja, safely hidden in Army barracks, history will not be kind to him.

On the authority of other reports, Uzodinma is said to be locked up in a cozy suite in Abuja in preparation for the inauguration of a senator-elect he has been battling to foist on Imo North. If what matters most to a governor at this moment of collective misery and mass despair is to junket about and throw lavish parties in distant climes, Uzodinma has become the most modern reincarnation of the fifth emperor of Rome, Claudius Nero, who fiddled while Rome burnt.

In July of 64 AD, a great fire ravaged Rome for six days, destroying seventy percent of the city and leaving half its population homeless. Rome’s emperor at the time, the decadent, cruel, vain, immoral, obscene, anti-Christian and unpopular Nero, was caught fiddling while Rome was on fire. The expression has a double meaning: Not only did Nero play music while his people suffered, but he was an ineffectual, fun-seeking, pleasure-loving, beer-guzzling, hemp-smoking leader in a time of great crisis.

Granted that insecurity has obtained in parts of the country, many other governors have remained in their states and have remained resolute, never resting in their oars and ever seeking out ways to stem the tide. We see that in Benue, with Samuel Ortom creating livestock guards and enforcing anti-open grazing legislations religiously. We see that Enugu, with Ifeanyi Ugwianyi creating forest guards, neighborhood watches and energizing security operatives. We see governors who are upfront with their people, building broad-based consensus and stakeholding to restore peace and normalcy to their lands.

But in Imo State, not a word has been heard from Uzodinma. Even when he spoke in Abuja a long time ago, it was to make incendiary remarks and take personal credit for the military operations and airstrikes in Orlu, thereby pitting the entire state against the “Unknown Gunmen”. Now that the fire is on, Uzodinma should immediately be smoked out from wherever he is finding comfort in Abuja to return home and save his people.

Governance, Coronavirus And Delinquent Leadership – Late Yinka Odumakin

GOVERNANCE, Coronavirus And Delinquent Leadership -By Yinka Odumakin

The Church was packed full. It was a gathering of eminent Nigerians to remember. But there probably more soldiers than dignitaries and well wishers who came to wish Papa Adekunle Ajasin final bye. The men in green were in the Owo Church to “guard” then No 2 in the country: gen. Oladipo Diya who came to stand in for his dark-googled and evil-hearted boss, Gen Sani Abacha.

A soldier was standing over my head with a gun. I looked at him and his weapon intermittently that I could hardly concentrate on the service until Most. Rev Abiodun Adetiloye, then Primate of the Anglican Church started his sermon.

He told a story I will never forget that day in 1997. It was about the day God was creating the countries of the earth. He would create a country now and deposit gold there. Another he would create and pit cocoa and bronze. But when he was to create Nigeria He deposited oil, gold, bitumen, iron and all mineral resources you can think of.

Resentment grew among other countries and God saw their ill-fillings. But he continued putting more resources in Nigeria until He was satisfied.

He now turned to the raging countries to ask them the cause of their resend tent and they told him it was about the resources He put in only Nigeria. He shook his head and laughed at their ignorance about the fact that resources on their own food not make a country great. He told them”Look at the leaders I will put in charge of the resources”.

Coronavirus is today showing to all those protesting countries today how useless a country can be with all the resources on earth of it badly structured with wrong leaders.

With all the resources God deposited in this land, it could only coast of 5 test centers for its over 200m estimated people(Nigeria cannot even count its citizens ).india has over 1.3billion people and on their national news daily you will see “Indian Population as at. 9 pm tonight “.

My heart bled when I saw a “fine bara” letter a top medical institution where the Saudi Royal family used to come on medical pilgrimage is allegedly now sending all over town to be able to buy simple things like ventilators, a confirmation of how well the leaders of this country ha be done over the years.

The Senator who removed his face mask to sneeze and release bacteria all over the hollow chambers is a typical representation of those who run this place.

We have many slices of how leadership wrecks a country all over is in this season of pandemic starting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari who is now positive of Coronavirus.

Only God knows what the business of a COS is going with the Power Minister to a high -incident country like Germany to negotiate equipment in the misdated of this pandemic outside what Nigerian leaders are notorious for.

The man returned to the country and continued the reckless and impunity-driven lifestyle of a Nigerian VIP. He didn’t self -isolate. He was at the Federal Executive where he is the direct boss of ministers, he met the President and governors, he attended weddings, burials and other functions. He must have spread the virus all over the country particularly among the big men and women.

And now my brother, Omoyele Sowore is alerting the world that they are aiming for his head because his SR published the starts of Kyari.

The irresponsibility that misrules our national life would have kept this opaque I while all those who met Kyari would not have been aware r of what they possibly carry and contained the spread.Only in Nigeria!

London is one of the most badly hit cities of the world by Coronavirus but our Ambassador there being a retired Justice of the Supreme Court notwithstanding is a Nigerian big man above all else. He turned 80 and had to duo a lavish party. He implored a lot of personalities from Nigeria with Ebenezer Obey there to serenade. Two of Justice Oguntade guests have been reported dead of the virus.

The National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was in London for several weeks during the spread of this disease and could not be said to be ignorant of. What was going on, In fact when his party was involved in leadership crisis he fired a memo home in which he deployed Coronavirus imagery.

He returned to the country after Kyari has been diagnosed and Oguntade guests we’re dead but the big man in him would not self-isolate. He was seen knocking elaborate with Lagos Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo- Olu a day after he arrived. He spoke with journalists who would go and put the same equipments in the mouth of other personalities. Political meetings would not be reeled out where favor-seekers would no be in short supply.

Only God would know what Bauchi Governor, Bala Mohammed who is now Coronavirus positive was looking for when he chose the period of pandemic to pay a courtesy visit to the country’s disease control centre. He even took a group picture that was almost a kilometer long in a malady that was uniquely Nigerian and devoid of he commonest sense.

It is only a leadership made of the Nigerian stuff that would know our zero capacity as country to handle this type of virus that even countries with the best of medical facilities are only trying that would leave our boarders open till we did. Ni do not want to accept r the suggestion that we could jeopardize the health of the whole country just to wait till the time a few privileged citizens felt they were ready to return the country.

And the great difference a good leadership can make could be seen between Nigeia and China. This Coronavirus problem started in China but that country of 1.46 billion people has run it out. China and Nigeria were at par on most development indices in the 70s.

The country recorded a total of 80,928 confirmed virus cases with 3,245 deaths. Another 70,420 people have been released from hospital and 7,263 remain in treatment.

“It’s very clear that the actions taken in China have almost brought to an end their first wave of infections,” said Ben Cowling, the head of the division of epidemiology and biostatistics at Hong Kong University’s School of Public Health. “The question is what will happen if there’s a second wave, because the kind of measures that China has implemented are not necessarily sustainable in the long term.”But they have succeeded and Trump is now talking of working closely with that country.

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, had called for a “people’s war” against the epidemic, and the party’s propaganda outlets have in recent weeks hailed the party’s response as a success and a model for other countries. .We have not heard one word from our own President and his party’s propaganda is about his whereabouts.

China was able to build a Coronavirus hospital in Wuhan in 10 days. It is doubtful if Nigeria can lay a foundation of a modern hospital in 10 months. The only hospital we can build in such period would be one whose entire budget would be in the pockets of officials will only the site to show.

Weeks back, Nigerians were running from Chinese but today it is Chinese whoa are packing their bags and leaving Nigeria in the replay of Nigeria-Ghana scenario. the song here was “Ghana -Must-Go” when we chased them out its Nigerians who are being kicked out of Ghana.

My friend, Adebayo Adeleke posted a news clip from Joy TV of “73 prostitutes” ring deported from Ghana comprising 71 Nigeerias!

Nigeia we hail tee!

…….And some provocations

And Mrs Biola Agbaje sent out this thought-provoking one on COVD-19 during the week and her concluding lines got me thinking further on our national tragedy :

“Returnees from abroad have drivers, PAs, etc to rush to meet them at the airport, house helps, cooks, etc, who are only too glad to shake Ogas hand in welcome. Many get infected. They go home to their one bedroom homes, where 6 people squeeze into, and infect their families. An ever expanding circle of contagion, with a population of 200+ million! And NEXT TO NO healthcare! ( please don’t let’s fool ourselves).

And therin lies the irony, the unfairness of our corrupt system. Who will get the scant Medicare available?? You got it- the same 1% who brought Covid 19 into the country in the first case!

Alibabas Jack Ma has just sent $$$millions of medical aid to be distributed among African countries. News is that Nigeria has taken delivery of hers. Please watch and see who gets it.”

I Watched Helplessly As My Husband Was Beaten To Death By His Siblings -Widow

Chidiebube Okeoma

Tuesday, April 13, is a day 24-year-old Chinaza Azuatalam will not forget. It’s the day her 29-year-old husband, Chinonso Azuatalam, who is a welder, lost his life.

The artisan on that day took breakfast with his wife and two daughters, Munachi, aged three years and Amara, one year, and left for his workshop located in Okuku community, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

Our correspondent learnt that he had barely started work for the day when he got a call that his sister, Chioma, a serving police woman in the state, was in his house and allegedly beating his pregnant wife.

It was gathered that Chinonso returned home to a chaotic atmosphere where some villagers were trying to rescue his wife from his sister.

Chinaza, who spoke to our correspondent from her hospital bed on Thursday in Okuku, said that her husband on arrival protested against his sister’s action, adding that his sister instead called three of their siblings on the phone to join her.

The pregnant woman who spoke in a broken voice added that on arrival, his three brothers-in-law identified as Chibuzor, and twins; Mishark and Shedrack, allegedly descended on her husband.

She said that while villagers at the scene tried to stop them from fighting her husband, one of the twins allegedly hit her husband with a big stick and he fell down immediately. Chinaza noted that her husband’s immediate younger brother, Chibuzor, used a machete to inflict a deep cut on her husband’s forehead and he lost consciousness.

The woman said that contrary to the claim that her husband died in a hospital, he actually gave up the ghost before he could get medical help. The pregnant widow further alleged that her in-laws were also threatening her life after purportedly killing her husband.

She said, “I married Chinonso in 2017. He was until his death a welder and the first son of his family. We had two daughters together, Munachi and Amara and I am currently seven months pregnant. My husband, daughters and I ate breakfast together that day before he left for his workshop. Not long after he left home, my sister-in-law, Chioma, came to our house and started beating me. She abused me and was beating me before some villagers came to my rescue.

“My husband whose workshop was not far away from home was contacted and he quickly rushed home. On arrival, he started protesting and his sister, a police officer, who always boasted of how connected she is, quickly called three of their siblings on the phone to come to our house. They came and started beating my husband. As they beat him, one of the twins hit him with a big stick and his immediate younger brother used a machete on him and he had a deep cut on his head and collapsed immediately.

“People started shouting that they had killed my husband and started crying. I wanted to come out from where I hid but some people quickly held me and the children back. My husband died before some villagers took him to a hospital in Umuguma where he was pronounced dead by doctors.

“The death of my husband was painful because that was not what I bargained for with him. Where do I start from? The incident has crippled me and it looks as if my world has stopped moving. It looks as if the world is against me now. It looks as if I am still in a dream and hoping to wake up in no distant time to realise that this episode is a movie scene.’’

Asked if her husband had issues with his siblings before his death, the widow said there had been disagreements over inheritance which she claimed his family members denied him as the first son.

She said that her husband’s maternal uncles advised him to forget his late father’s shop which the second son occupied and their family land which his siblings allegedly wanted to share without her husband’s consent.

The woman who said that she dropped out in secondary school said, “My husband’s maternal uncles came on Sunday and pleaded with him to allow his immediate younger brother to continue using their father’s shop. Also, his siblings teamed up to share their father’s belongings in her husband’s absence. The development was vehemently opposed by my husband.’’

The widow also claimed that she faced opposition from her mother-in-law whom she alleged mocked her for not having a male child. She stated, “They teamed up to kill my husband and they have succeeded. My sister-in-law always boasted that she would deal with me and my husband and nothing would happen.”

Asked what she wanted upon her husband’s death, she said, “I want my in-laws to bring back my husband. I am only a housewife. My husband was the breadwinner. He was the one who took care of our daughters. I want justice. I want the government to come to my aid. I want my children’s education to be taken care of. My husband was awaiting the arrival of the baby in my womb. But it’s unfortunate that he did live to see his unborn child. I want justice for my husband. I want the government to establish something for me so that I can take care of my children.’’

The widow said that she would not consider staying with her husband’s family, adding that she cannot be safe with them.

Chinaza said, “Nigerians should come to my aid. Nigerians should not allow hunger to kill me and my children. I don’t know how to feed my children and myself or take care of my baby when I give birth. I want my husband to get justice even in death.”

The deceased’s uncle, Amadi Azuatalam, who spoke to our correspondent when he visited the place where the murder took place, said that he was also not spared from what he described as his nephews and nieces troubles.

Amadi said, “Their father was my elder brother and he died in 2019. His children took over his lands and property. The truth is that I am not spared of the children’s troubles. The police officer among them once locked up my family members.”

The president of the community, Martin Daniel, said that the community was working closely with the police to ensure that there was no further breakdown of law and order in the community.

The community leader stated that though the incident was regrettable, the community had moved in to curb negative events in the area.

Daniel said, “What happened in our community was regrettable. It was unfortunate that the family didn’t manage their differences well. The incident happened and our own as a community is to ensure that we work closely with the government to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.”

He promised that the community would monitor the development of things regarding the matter to ensure that justice was served.

Another source in the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, accused the siblings of misbehaving to their late brother.

He said, “The deceased was a welder who fought with his siblings and one of them hit him with a big stick on the back of his head and he lost consciousness. Their sister who is a policewoman beat up the deceased’s pregnant wife. They all ran away on getting information that their eldest brother had been pronounced dead. Their mother also ran away. Their fight was over their late father’s property.’’

When Saturday PUNCH visited the Azuatalam family house, no one was at home. On inquiry, it was discovered that the police arrested the policewoman while others, including the twins and their mother, were on the run.

In his narration, second son and one of the late Chinonso’s siblings, Chibuzor, who spoke to our correspondent, said that he had no hand in the death of his elder brother.

He said that it was the deceased who inflicted machete cuts on his hand. Chibuzor added that the deceased refused to accept the formula in sharing their late father’s wealth.

He said “I didn’t kill my elder brother. He was the one who inflicted machetes cut on my hand. It was while trying to further inflict injury on me that one of the twins hit him with a stick. He fell and we rushed to a hospital at Umuguma behind the police station. He was referred to another hospital on Owerri-Okigwe Road at Orji. It was there that the doctors confirmed him dead.”

On the disagreement in sharing their father’s property, Chibuzor said, “Upon the death of our father, we were left with three and half plots of land because we sold one plot to facilitate his burial. After the burial, we contributed money and bought a plot of land, making it four and half plots of land. A family meeting was held and it was agreed that the first son should take a plot and half while the remaining three of us who are males should take a plot each. But our eldest brother disagreed and insisted he would take two and half plots. It was agreed that the male children should continue to live in our father’s house until we build our own houses and leave the house for the first son. But he found that uncomfortable.”

Chibuzor also denied the allegation that her sister, who is a police officer, beat the deceased’s pregnant wife.

He said, “My sister didn’t beat her late brother’s wife. She only poked her mouth. My elder brother was the one who used a machete to destroy things in the house. The deceased was the one who used a machete to inflict injury on my hand. It was in his second attempt to cut me that one of the twins hit him with a stick and he fell down. The incident is regrettable.”

However, the state police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, who said that the command had swung into action, added that two of the siblings, including the female police officer, had been arrested.

Ikeokwu, said that a report available to the police indicated that the late Chinonso was after her mother to kill her over disagreements in the sharing of their father’s property.

He said, “On April 12, based on a report received at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Owerri West LGA, operatives of the division arrested one Chioma Emenyionu, and her brother, one Mishark Emenyionu, both of Uborji village, in Okuku, Owerri West LGA, Imo State. They were arrested in connection with the murder of their brother, one Chinonso Emenyionu.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the late Chinonso was protesting the formula used in the sharing of their father’s property. As a result of which he took a machete and threatened to cut his mum. His sister, Chioma Emenyionu, then called their other brothers, Chigbu, Mishark, and Shedrack Emenyionu, all of whom arrived at the scene and descended on the late Chinonso and beat him to stupor. Consequently, he was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. However, the corpse has been deposited in the morgue, while effort is on to arrest the other fleeing suspects. Investigation is ongoing.”
