EX-SGF Eyes Presidency, Govs Dump Oyinlola As PDP Deputy Chair

•Ex-Osun governor banks on non-PDP states’ delegates for victory
•Nineteen contestants elected unopposed in Abuja
•It’s not easy keeping party together, says Tambuwal
A former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, on Saturday, expressed his interest to contest the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2023 election.
He said he would go ahead with his plan whether the PDP zoned the position to the South-East or not.

Anyim made the declaration on Saturday in an interview with journalists in Abuja.
The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who noted that the party’s national convention, which started on Saturday and would continue on Sunday, would signal the commencement of political activities in the party, and that it was a good time to indicate interest.
He said, “Posters of my presidential bid and agitations by groups for me to contest flooded the social media in 2020 and I disassociated myself from such calls. I felt that it was too early for such a declaration to enable the present administration to concentrate on governance.
“Such calls resurfaced in the early part of 2021 and I choose to be quiet over the issue. But we have less than 18 months to the next general elections and I feel the time is ripe to indicate my interest.”
He stated that the party’s zoning committee was only saddled with zoning party positions and not elective positions ahead of 2023.

He added, “Zoning of such elective positions was deferred but nothing stops anyone from the south-East zone from contesting the presidency even if it was not zoned to it.”
He noted that the convention would mark the rebirth of the party.
Meanwhile, governors of the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday refused to back a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, for the position of the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South).
Rather, the governors queued behind a former deputy governor of Oyo State, Ambassador Taofek Arapaja, for the position.

At the National Convention of the party which started in Abuja on Saturday evening and would continue till Sunday, the governors after being unable to make Arapaja the sole candidate for the office decided to leave both men to slug it out.
The Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde, was the first to endorse Oyinlola for the office before he changed his mind and started to support Arapaja.
The governors, it was gathered, were of the opinion that the former military administrator of Lagos State could be too independently-minded to be controlled by them.
Sources said Makinde’s sudden change of mind was already creating ripples among members of the party in the South-West, especially between both Oyo and Osun states.
At the Eagles Square, Abuja, venue of the eighth elective national convention, drama however played out from when delegates from Oyo and Osun states traded words.
Loyalists of Oyinlola and Arapaja, who were seated next to each other, sang solidarity and abusive songs that reflected the tension in the South-West caucus of the party.
Oyinlola sat in company with a former governorship candidate of the PDP in Osun State, Senator Nurudeen Adeleke; and a former Deputy Governor in the state and ex-Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada.
A former presidential aide, Dr Doyin Okupe, among other party leaders, watched as the drama unfolded.
The songs were led by talking drummers, while the loyalists sang and danced along. At some point, the party faithful rose to point at one another.
Though some stakeholders, especially governors, adopted Arapaja as a consensus candidate for the position, Oyinlola vowed to resist the decision.
A source close to Oyinlola said, “The governors are backing Arapaja. They have abandoned Oyinlola who Makinde encouraged to run for the office.
“They failed to intimidate Oyinlola. They forgot to realise that he was a Brigadier-General in the army and that they could not force him out of a race he had made up his mind to contest.
“Oyinlola was going to run for the office of the National Chairman of the party before the governors forced the party’s National Executive Committee to zone it to the north.

“The idea was meant to make sure he did not run for the office. Don’t be deceived with the false narration that the next presidential candidate of our party would come from the south. It is a lie and they all know.
“That notwithstanding, Oyinlola and his supporters are relying on states without PDP governors for votes. If he gets it, good and if he doesn’t win, it is not the end of life.”
It was also gathered that the elders of the party insisted that Oyinlola must contest the election.
“If he steps down, the governors would turn back to say they would have supported him. That was why he was encouraged to go into the race and see the outcome,” another source added.
The source said at the end of the convention, leaders and supporters of Oyinlola would determine the next line of action.
Govs may cause crisis in South-West – Lawmaker
A member of the House of Representatives from Osun State, who watched as the scenario played out inside the Eagles Square, blamed PDP governors for what he termed as the brewing crisis in the South-West caucus of the party.
The lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that part of the plans by the governors was to seize the control of the party through the emerging National Working Committee members.
He said, “You can see what they (the governors) have caused. They just want to have their way, damning the consequence.
“A northerner may emerge as the candidate of the party for the presidency, which means that the chairman would come from the South. It is part of their calculation that should Iyorchia Ayu have to step down, Arapaja, their candidate, would become the National Chairman of the party.”
Sources in the PDP alleged that Makinde, who is Secretary of the Convention Planning Committee, enjoys the backing of other governors in the party to sponsor Arapaja’s emergence as the Deputy National Chairman.
At Eagles Square, two versions of a consensus list otherwise known as Unity List were circulated. While the first one that had Arapaja as the candidate was allegedly from the PDP governors, another list later emerged which contained the name of Oyinlola for the same position.
All the other 20 positions however had the same set of names on the two lists.
Delegates from Abia State were the first to cast their ballots as the states voted in alphabetical order.
As of 11 pm on Saturday night, delegates from Ondo State were still casting their votes.
PDP govs in full control of convention – Rep
Another member of the House from Kogi State, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the event was largely sponsored by the governors.
“The governors are fully in charge of this convention, from the planning to the sponsorship. No doubt, they will be calling the shots in our party going forward,” the lawmaker said.
A delegate from Osun State, who spoke to one of our correspondents, said, “Both the Soji Adagunodo and Sunday Bisi factions of the party buried their differences to support Oyinlola. Osun State delegates didn’t come with a divided house as many thought. This should work in his favour.
“PDP as a party is not a one-man affair. What should determine the outcome of the election is who can rally support for the party in the region. Oyinlola would still command a huge following in the South-West. Oyinlola, being a former governor, has the support of some former governors and leaders from the region.”
Like Oyinlola, Mrs Inna Ciroma, who is contesting the position of the Deputy National Chairman (North), has also resisted pressure to step down for her male contender, Umar Damagum.
Ciroma and Damagum are from Yobe State, where the position was micro-zoned to.
However, two of the three candidates for the position of the National Auditor, Samben Nwosu and Mrs Chibuogwu Benson-Oraelosi, have withdrawn from the contest.
Nwosu’s letter of withdrawal was read at the convention by the Adamawa State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Convention Committee, Ahmadu Fintiri.
Oraelosi, on the other hand, announced her withdrawal on the podium while voting was in progress.
Their withdrawal left Chief Okechukwu Obiechina Daniel as the consensus candidate for the position.
It’s not easy keeping PDP united – Tambuwal
Speaking at the venue, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, said it was not easy keeping the party united.
Tambuwal, who is the Governor of Sokoto State, said it was tough to keep PDP together as a big party, with members from across the country and with various interests and desires.
He said, “Diverse as we are, it is however clear to me that we are at our best when we remember that we must remain focused and disciplined for the sake of our country and for the benefit of fellow Nigerians.
“In Nigeria, it is tough to remain an item, focused and disciplined as an opposition party. The temptation and allure of power can be overwhelming. Some have fallen along the way.”
Tambuwal however commended all those who remain focused and disciplined to do the hard work that opposition requires.
“I am happy to report to the naysayers that PDP today is the strongest and formidable party in Nigeria. I am happy to report to those who want to divide and weaken us that we are winning by the grace of God.”
He welcomed the new members to the party, saying other concerned Nigerians were also welcomed to join.
Tambuwal, who noted that the country is going through tough times, added that Nigeria needed strong and smart citizens who could provide the leadership that would help sustain institutions capable of promoting collaboration in the areas of security, innovation, trade, investment and defence of the democracy.
“Our young people need a secured, safe and enabling country that will allow them to realise their desires to be educated, employed and deploy their entrepreneurship skills,” he added.
Meanwhile, Fintiri in his welcome speech urged the party’s founding fathers to return. He specifically recognised the “stabilising” role played by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Fintiri recalled that in the effort to save Nigeria from the quagmire caused by successive military regimes, a group of political leaders, who were 18 and later increased to 34, took the courage to challenge the junta so that the country could be freed and restored onto the path of democracy.
He said the group, known as the G-34, later formed the nucleus and rallying point of the associations that formed the PDP.
The governor said, “I must acknowledge the role of these founding fathers, especially the original members of the G-34 – some dead and others still alive – and all other party men and women who contributed in building the party that has given Nigeria and Nigerians freedom and a hope for survival.
“Chief Alex Ekwueme, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, Chief Sunday Awoniyi, Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, Alhaji Sule Lamido, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Chief Solomon Lar, Alhaji lro Danmusa, Prof Ango Abdullahi, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai and Amb Aminu Wali.

“Others are Amb Yahaya Kwande, Prof Jibril Aminu, Prof lya Abubakar, Alhaji Bello Kirfi, Chief Audu Ogbe, Chief Barnabas Gemade, Prof Daniel Saror, Sulaiman Kumo, lyochia Ayu, Chief Tom Ikimi, Alhaji Isiyaku Ibrahim, Senator Walid Jibril, Dr Garba Nadama, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Chief Olusola Saraki, Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura, Chief Anthony Anenih, Alhaji Musa Musawa, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Jim Nwobodo, Prof Jerry Gana and Colonel Ahmadu Ali.
“For those, who are still contemplating a return, but are held back by any other force less than Nigeria, I call on you to break the force and return to where you rightly belong. It is time to rescue Nigeria.”
Fintiri also took a swipe at the ruling All Progressives Congress and condemned the regime led by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
He said, “For Nigeria, the present APC-led government is hell-bent on railroading the country into multifaceted recession; from the economy to governance, national security, diplomacy, poverty, unemployment, anti-corruption, observance of the rule of law, citizenship and national cohesion, etc.”
He said the country had never had it this bad, noting that there was no doubt that Nigeria was better by far with the PDP in power.
“That citizens are yearning for the return of PDP at the centre as the 2023 elections draw nearer is equally not in doubt,” he added.
He begged the members of the party not to disappoint their supporters.
He stated, “We have to take back our country as we have always done. We have to save Nigeria. If we could force the country out of the clutches of the military, we can do this one huge task – push the people who don’t know the true definition of good governance and national coexistence out of power. This is a rescue mission for Nigeria. This is the role PDP was invented to play.”
Fintiri reiterated the clarification he made on Friday that the incumbent members of the NWC would remain in office till December 9, 2021, adding that the inauguration of the new committee would wait till then.
We must save Nigeria from APC, says Atiku
Also, a former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, in his goodwill message, condemned the APC, insisting that the ruling party was a bad omen for the country.
Atiku said, “Nigeria is in its most trying period. I am 70 years old and I can tell you that I have never seen this country so disintegrated, disunited, with the number of unemployment so much; security challenges in all corners along with lingering tensions surrounding the very nature of our existence. Nigeria is at the edge of the precipice because of the lacklustre performance of the APC.
“We have a chance now to set the ship on the right course; a chance to atone for the mistakes of the past leadership; a chance to make the country achieve the dreams of our founding fathers who fought for independence many years ago.”
He called on the party to gather technocrats and the greatest minds from across the globe to join the party in charting the way forward for the country. He added that the party must develop a system that would reduce the focus on religious and tribal affiliations and focus on ability and competence.
Bury your differences, reconcile for PDP, Nigeria – Akinwonmi
While declaring the convention open, the acting National Chairman of the party, Yemi Akinwonmi, called for reconciliation of aggrieved and warring members of the party.
“I call on all members of this party to come together, bury our individual and collective differences and put the PDP and the interest of Nigeria above any consideration,” he added.
Akinwonmi also attacked the APC-led government, saying, “We all know the disturbing and uncomfortable condition and situation Nigerians are in today due to our loss of power. The APC-led government is so clueless that Nigerians need a better hand to get them out of this mess. I believe we can do it as we did before.”
Earlier, the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, noted that Nigeria was going through difficult moments. He also decried the insecurity, socioeconomic difficulties and separatist agitations in the country.
Abaribe urged delegates and party officials not to disappoint Nigerians.
As of Friday morning, it was unclear if the convention would hold until the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division, dismissed the appeal filed by the suspended National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus.
The court dismissed the appeal filed by Secondus, in which he sought an interim injunction to restrain the PDP from conducting the convention.

NBA, PANDEF, Others Condemn Justice Odili’s House Invasion, AGF Orders Probe

Condemnations from several quarters, on Saturday, trailed the invasion of the Abuja residence of Supreme Court Justice Mary Odili by security agencies on Friday.
Among those who condemned the invasion of the Justice’s home were the Nigerian Bar Association; the Pan Niger Delta Forum; two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Messrs Femi Falana and Mike Ozekhome; a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu; and the suspended Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus.

This was as the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), denied knowledge of the operation and ordered a probe into the invasion, said to have been carried out by the Joint Panel Recovery Unit of the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Sunday PUNCH had reported that search warrant-wielding security operatives on Friday stormed the residence of the Justice, who is the wife of a former governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili, whom the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was once after over alleged corruption.
To shake the EFCC off his tail, the ex-governor had years back secured a perpetual injunction, granted by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, restraining the anti-graft agency from probing or prosecuting him for corruption.
But in what seemed to be a fresh move against the former governor, the Nigeria Immigration Service recently seized Odili’s passport at the airport.
The NIS said it seized Odili’s passport based on the complaint by the EFCC.
But Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Lagos later ordered the NIS to release Odili’s passport to him.
However, it was learnt that the Friday invasion of the Justice’s home was ostensibly in furtherance of the move against her husband.
But the EFCC, in a statement by its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, denied involvement in the operation.
Reacting to the invasion on Saturday, the Nigerian Bar Association, in a statement by its President, Olumide Akpata, described it as “a part of an orchestrated affront on the judiciary, designed to intimidate and ridicule the judiciary.”
Akpata, who said the Friday invasion was reminiscent of how homes of seven judges were invaded by operatives of the Department of State Services in 2016, said the NBA “will no longer allow this to continue.”
The NBA President, in a press release, titled, ‘Statement of the NBA on the raid of Justice Mary Odili’s residence by security operatives,’ said, “In case the law enforcement agencies have not learnt their lessons, events like this do nothing but erode the independence of the sacred democratic institutions like the judiciary, undermine the rule of law in Nigeria and set the country back in the quest to instil confidence in citizens of Nigeria, Nigerian businesses and foreign investors that Nigeria operate a democracy with an independent judiciary.”
However, Akpata said he had spoken with the harassed Justice and “I am happy to report that she is alive and well.”
He vowed that the NBA would get to the root of the matter.
“We will be convening an emergency meeting of the NBA National Executive Committee solely to discuss the issue and take a definitive stand on behalf of the NBA.
“I will lead a delegation to the honourable Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the relevant heads of security agencies to seek further clarification on the circumstances of this incident.”
Falana, in a statement, called on the NBA fish out lawyers who approached an Abuja chief magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna, to obtain the search warrant leading to the invasion of Justice Odili’s home.
The magistrate had on Friday revoked the search warrant, saying the applicants deceived the court to obtain it.
Falana said, “The lawyers that are indicted should be dragged to the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee for sanctions.”
Ozekhome, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, said, “I am happy that the chief magistrate, who initially gave the warrant, revoked it immediately after realising that he was misled.
“We are gradually moving towards the precipice of becoming a Banana Republic; no country in the world will you go and see security operatives burgle or storm the house of a Justice of the Supreme Court in that manner; it is a political move and also a plan to embarrass the judiciary.”
On its part, PANDEF, in a statement on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Robinson, described the invasion as one attack too many on “persons of South-South extraction,” noting that the immediate-past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen (retd.), who is from Cross River State, was in January 2019 subjected to the similar treatment, that culminated in his leaving office prematurely ahead of the last general elections.
“The raid, in the dusk hours of last Friday, is not only crude and primitive but barbaric and dictatorial. It is another attempt by agents of the (the President, Major General Muhammadu) Buhari administration to further intimidate and humiliate the nation’s judiciary,” PANDEF said.
It demanded that those behind the invasion be fished out and punished.
Also condemning the raid, Secondus, in a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, described it as embarrassing.
“It’s our responsibility as a democratic nation to ensure the continued sanctity of the judiciary as a critical component of democracy,” Secondus said.
Also, Kalu, in a statement he personally signed, said, “The invasion of the residence of Justice Mary Odili of the Supreme Court in a Gestapo manner is totally condemnable and unacceptable in a democratic dispensation.”
Meanwhile, the AGF, in a statement on Saturday by his Special Assistant, Media and Public Relations, Dr Umar Gwandu, distanced himself from the operation.
The statement quoted him as ordering a probe into the circumstances surrounding the raid of the Justice’s home.
“It is important to set the record straight that as the Chief Law Officer of the federation, Malami, will not stop low to be associated with an inelegant and nasty court process on the strength of which the purported search warrant was procured.
“The media reports on the issue depict too untidy process that could never emanate from the Office of the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice,” Gwandu’s statement read in part.

Senate Asks NSPM To Reinstate Worker Sacked In 2008

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions has directed the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc to reinstate a worker sacked in 2008, Philip Kemdel, and pay him all his salaries and other entitlements over the years within two weeks.

The panel said NSPM had no moral justification to sack the innocent Nigerian.
The decision of the Senate panel was sequel to a petition laid on the floor of the red chamber by Senator Istianus Gyang on April 30, this year.
Kemdel had in his petition against the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc, alleged that his appointment was wrongful terminated by NSPM in 2008.
He requested that the Senate look into the matter by urging the NSPM to reinstate him and pay all his salaries and entitlements.

Justifying the reason for his committee’s action in an interview with our correspondent on Friday, the panel chairman, Senator Ayo Akinyelure said the reason advanced by NSPM to justify its action was not tenable.
Akinyelure said, “How can someone who was alleged to have been absent from work for 20 minutes be sacked just like that?
“This is a man that had worked in the organisation for 11 years with a meritorious award only to be sacked for allegedly not found at his duty post for 20 minutes.
Speaking with our correspondent after the verdict of the Senate panel, the sacked worker expressed happiness over the decision of the committee.
He said, “I am also using this opportunity to plead with all distinguished senators and the principal officers to kindly approve the report of the committee whenever it is submitted for consideration and approval.”

Groups Seek End To Irregular Migration, Human Trafficking

The International Organisation for Migration, the National Agency for Prohibition and Trafficking in Persons, and the Women’s Board have agreed to support efforts at combating irregular migration and human trafficking in Nigeria.

A statement on Friday in Lagos said the calls were made on Wednesday at a one-day seminar tagged, ‘Promoting Safe Migration,’ organised by the training unit of the Women’s Board Educational Cooperative Society.
The IOM Nigeria officer, Ms Ruth Mbugua, cautioned against irregular migration saying, “It’s both dangerous and deadly.”
Mbugua, who called for more partnership to put an end to the menace, advised potential migrants to partner relevant agencies to ensure safe migration.
“Many people, including women and children, are on the Mediterranean route to other countries, risking their lives in search of greener pastures and opportunities without being aware of dangers on the way.”
Also speaking, a representative of Bakhita Empowerment Network, Rev Sister Gertrude Elelegu, said, “Irregular migration and human trafficking have reached crisis proportions in many fragile states and the need to clamp down on the menace is germane to prevent impeding dangers because human trafficking is a violation of human right.”
Also, the Zonal Commander, NAPTIP, Lagos, Mr Aganran Alao, called on Nigerians to discourage irregular migration and trafficking of women and girls to promote a sustainable development.
Alao who was represented by the Head, Research and Program Development Unit, Lagos, Mrs Rachel Uzor, said, “The problem of human trafficking and irregular migration has become a great national concern, especially with a large number of Nigerians trapped in sexual and labour exploitations in various African and European countries.”
Earlier, the Director, WB, Mrs Edna Dafe said the programme was aimed at preventing irregular migrations to promote socioeconomic development of women and unaccompanied minors.

Lagos High Court Orders 29 Suspects, Ship’s Detention Over Cocaine Importation

The Federal High Court in Lagos has granted the application by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for the interim attachment of a vessel, MV Chayaneenaree, allegedly used to import 32.9 kilogrammes of cocaine into Nigeria through the Apapa seaport in Lagos.
Besides the attachment order, the court also granted the request of the agency to detain the master of the ship, Tanahan Krilerk, and 21 foreign crew members, as well as seven Nigerians arrested in connection with the case.

The NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said these in a statement on Saturday.
According to him, the anti-narcotic agency had on October 13 intercepted the ship at the Apapa seaport following intelligence from international partners and support from other security agencies such as the Nigerian Navy, Customs, DSS and the police.

The statement read further, “A search of the ship led to the recovery of 30 parcels containing cocaine, which weighed 32.9kg. Investigations into the seizure have been yielding more arrests of suspected local collaborators, as a result of which the Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Anambra: Umeoji Joins APC, Says APGA Now Minority Party

A former factional candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance for the November 6, Anambra governorship election, Chukwuma Umeoji, has defected to the All Progressives Congress, a week to the election.
Umeoji, who is the current member of the House of Representatives representing Aguata Federal Constituency in Anambra State, as well as his faction, was sacked by the Supreme Court after the

Independent National Electoral Commission listed him as APGA’s candidate.
The court subsequently ordered INEC to replace Umeoji with Professor Charles Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as the candidate of APGA for the next Saturday’s governorship election.
Umeoji defected to the APC along with two House of Assembly members and thousands of party supporters.
This was contained in a statement on Saturday by the factional APGA National Publicity Secretary, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere.
It was titled, ‘Umeoji, two state lawmakers dump APGA for APC, declare support for Andy Uba.’
The statement added that the National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC, Governor Mai Mala Buni, had received Umeoji.
The statement read partly, “With this development, APGA has lost its simple majority in the House of Assembly and has become a minority party, while the APC has become the majority party in the state House of Assembly.
“This is clearly not the best of times for the All Progressives Grand Alliance as the November 6 Anambra State governorship election draws nearer.
“The gale of defection that has so far hit the ruling party in the state in the build-up to the election is clearly an indication that APGA has lost its political grip on the state and hence may lose the forthcoming election.”

BREAKING: EFCC Speratives Storm Supreme Court Judge’s Home Amids Odili Probe

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday stormed the Maitama home of Supreme Court Judge, Justice Mary Odili, in Abuja, The PUNCH can confirm.
It was learnt that the operatives who were accompanied by policemen, went to the judge’s home to execute a search warrant as part of investigations into her husband, Peter Odili, who is a former Governor of Rivers State.

Odili, who was governor from 1999 to 2007, obtained a perpetual injunction from a Federal High Court in 2007 which barred the EFCC from investigating or prosecuting him.
In 2020, he approached a Federal High Court again to get another injunction to stop an impending probe.
Last month, the former governor sued the Nigeria Immigration Service for seizing his passport at the airport.
In its response, however, the NIS said it was the EFCC that asked it to seize Odili’s passport as part of a probe.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, however, ordered immigration to release the passport to Odili immediately.
An impeccable source told The PUNCH that Justice Odili, who is one of the most senior judges in the country, was upset about the decision of the EFCC to search her home.
The source said, “EFCC operatives armed with a search warrant stormed Justice Odili’s home today, claiming to be investigating her husband.
“Justice Odili insisted that it was her personal house and not her husband’s own.
“As I speak to you, the operatives are still there, insisting that they search the house.”
When contacted on the telephone for comment, the Spokesman for the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said he would find out.
However, he had yet to do so as of press time.

I Haven’t Decided On Super Eagles Return -Ighalo

Striker Odion Ighalo is undecided on his return to the Super Eagles.
The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, had hinted that Ighalo may return two years after he retired from the national team.
But Ighalo said he is indecisive.
“They have been in contact with me about the possibility of coming back, Amaju and coach,” the former Manchester United star told ESPN.

“I don’t know. I have not said yes or no. I haven’t made any decision concerning the national team.”
Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, said he had included Al Shabab striker, Odion Ighalo, in his 40-man provisional list for next month’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde.
The Franco-German gaffer is a huge admirer of the former Manchester United man, who emerged top scorer at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, before calling time on international football.
Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, in a recent Instagram post, hinted that talks were already underway for Ighalo to return to the national team.
“I had a long conversation with Odion Ighalo, personally I believe we need experience in our attack to combine with our energetically youthful Osinmeh, Onuachu, Kelechi et al. Odion’s body language is very positive,” Pinnick said.
In a chat with Elegbete TV, Rohr revealed that the former Nigeria U-20 captain had been included in his 40-man provisional list to face Liberia and Cape Verde, but it is yet to be known if the striker had given his word to return to the team.
“Ighalo is a very important man, I hope he can come back. I put him on the 40-man provisional list for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, we are in touch. He’s doing really well at his club and he still has the ambition to help his country. We have so many good strikers like Awoniyi, Moffi, Onuachu and Osimhen, but we don’t have anyone like Ighalo.
“Ighalo is different. He’s a special player, he sees everything. Our team now misses maturity and experience and this is where he could help us, because we miss his leadership, his experience and the goals he scored. He was the top scorer in the last AFCON and the qualifiers. I think we have so many young players, but they could learn a lot from the side of such a good player.”
Ighalo, who scored 16 goals in 35 appearances between 2015 and 2019 for the Eagles, has been in superb form for his club, bagging eight goals in nine league games.
He was listed in the Saudi League’s Team of The Week for their week nine games.

Yoruba Nation: What Buhari Told Me About Sunday Igboho -Ooni

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has regretted the detention of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, in Benin Republic.
In an interview with BBC, the monarch said the agitator rejected advice offered him by monarchs sent to dialogue with him.
Ooni narrated that he met the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over Sunday Igboho.

During the meeting, Buhari was informed of the reasons for Igboho’s agitation, according to the monarch.
In his reaction, Buhari was said to have said Igboho needs to be “calm and patient”.
The president also asked monarchs in the South-West advise Igboho against moves that are lawless.
The monarch, who said Igboho has a just cause to fight, said he should have been more diplomatic.
He alleged that Igboho was misled by politicians, insisting that the activist deserved the support of monarchs in the region.
On his part, Ooni said he had forgiven Igboho and already working to get him freed from detention in Benin Republic.
He said, “I have always told the government to call the agitators for a dialogue. Sunday Igboho grew up in Ife. All that he has become today, started from Ife. He fought the Ife and Modakeke war and both lands belong to Ife. He is a son of the soil.
“He wanted to fight for his kinsmen. He stood up and fought for those killed in Oke Ogun. We thank God for preserving his life. He tried his best but he was overwhelmed by different advice from people.
“Many people advised him wrongly. He listened to them.
“I visited President Buhari on his case and we discussed it. I told him that Igboho is our son, he told me that he (Igboho) should stay calm and exercise patience. The president told me that monarchs should warn him to be calm.
“After I left Buhari’s place, I called on monarchs and elders of Yoruba land for a meeting to advise Igboho to exercise patience but Igboho did not listen. He started abusing everyone, including the monarchs I sent to him.
“He hurled so many bad words but he is still our son. God owns forgiveness. We’ve forgiven him. If he had listened, he wouldn’t have found himself in his current travail.
“It is better to fight together. We can only achieve our goal if we are united.
“No one can fight with the government alone? You’ve to be diplomatic.”
The PUNCH had reported that Igboho is currently in a detention facility in Benin Republic after he was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on July 16, 2021, with his wife, while travelling to Germany.
This is after Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State home of the pro-Yoruba self-determination activist was invaded by men from DSS around 1:30 am on July 1, 2021, leading to the arrest of 12 of his aides, while Igboho managed to escape arrest.
Following the raid, Igboho sued the Federal Government and demanded damages.
Igboho asked the court to order the respondents to jointly pay him the sum ₦500 million as special damages for the damage done to his house and his car and another ₦500 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages for beaching his fundamental rights with the malicious invasion of his house as well as an order directing the Federal Government and the other respondents to tender a public apology in two national dailies.
Igboho also sought an order of the court directing the respondents to return all the items seized from the house.
He listed the items to include, N2 million cash, one thousand Euros, travel documents including international passports belonging to him and his family members, gold jewelry and wristwatches, 2 mobile phones, and other items yet unknown but which were allegedly carted away by the SSS.

Allow Kanu Access To Personal Physicians, Cousin Urges FG

Fresh concern over Nnamdi Kanu’s health has led a cousin of his to plead with the Federal Government to grant the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra access to his personal physicians for thorough medical attention.
Mr Chijindu Offor, the first cousin of the IPOB leader, raised this plea in a media chat with newsmen, saying he was seriously worried over the health status of Kanu.

He noted that the Department of State Services where the IPOB leader is currently being detained “lacks the needed facilities to handle his health challenges,” hence the compelling need to allow him access to his private doctors “to properly take care of him.”
Kanu’s cousin advised that the IPOB leader’s medical condition could worsen if not properly managed by experts, a sad development he said could even result to his death.
“Kanu’s death in custody would serve Nigeria no good, but worsen matters for the country as the aftermath of such tragedy will be too enormous to handle,” he said.
He urged the Federal Government to heed the appeals from various quarters to engage Kanu in dialogue with a view to resolving the cause of the growing agitation for self determination.
Only dialogue and meaningful engagement of the necessary stakeholders, he said, will resolve the various agitations for self determination in the country.
Offor urged leaders of the country to stop pretending and convene a round table discuss where the various genuine national questions will be frankly addressed to save Nigeria from the precipice.
He warned that intimidation and use of brute force by government will not stop the growing agitation for self determination by different regions in the country which he said was a result of the general disenchanted in the land.

Rise And Fall Of Oriental Brothers International Band – NAF STARS.

A highlife band from Eastern Nigeria, the original Orientals were formed by the Opara brothers Warrior, Dan Satch and Godwin Kabaka in 1972. In 1980, Warrior also left, to form Dr Sir Warrior And The Original Oriental Brothers.

A new audience opened up for the band with the 1991 release of Heavy On The Highlife, a furious compilation documenting fifteen years of spirited performances.

Now let’s talk about the engine gearbox behind this group Dede Dr. Sir. Warrior, named by his parents as Christogonus Ezebuiro Obinna. Born In 1947 In Imo State, Nigeria and he died on 2 June 1999, Dr. Sir Warrior, was the leader of the Oriental Brothers International Band which was famous in Igbo highlife music scene for several decades. Hence their name “Oriental” having come from the east. They started as an in-house band at Easy Going Hotels in Owerri owned by Chief James “Ewele” Azubuike. The Oriental Brothers were originally five members namely: Godwin Kabaka Opara, Ferdinand Dansatch Emeka Opara, Livinus Akwilla Alaribe, Fred “Ichita” Ahumaraeze and Christogonus Ezebuiro “Warrior” Obinna.

The first split within the group occurred in 1977 when founding member and the first leader of the band, Godwin Opara left to start his own bands after a dispute under the moniker Kabaka International Guitar Band and was replaced with Aloysius Anyanwu, a former guitarist with Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe’s Nigerian Sound Makers Band and a founding member of the Ikenga Super Stars band after they left Osadebe’s band.

Later Ichita and Livinus Akwila Alaribe equally left the band to form another group called the Great Oriental Band. In 1978 a mistrust and copyright issue ensued between Dansatch/Warrior on one side and Aloysius Anyanwu on the other which ended in a libel action.

The acrimonious dispute led Aloysius Anyanwu too leaving the band to go solo as Aloy Anyanwu and His State Brothers Band. So that left only Dansatch and Warrior as the only remaining founding members.

They recruited freelance musicians around Owerri and some migrant musicians from Ghana to relaunch the band after many exists. They had hit after hit after this reshuffling. Yet again dispute emerged between Dansatch and Warrior over the future shape of the band regarding artistic style.

So after their 1980 hit album “Obi Nwanne” both men parted ways. Warrior retained the core of the band’s musicians and named himself “Dr Sir Warrior & His Oriental Brothers International Band. While Dansatch continued as Oriental Brothers International Band led by Ferdinand Emeka Opara.

Though each of the groups had their distinct sound, they all shared a passion for blending Eastern Africa region’s Congolese guitar rhythm blended with traditional Igbo percussional rhythms. According to the Igbo magazine Kwenu, “the Oriental Brothers played a very important spiritual role in keeping many Igbo sane. They were the pride of a people traumatized by a war so vicious.

Dr. Sir Warrior was from Umuhu Enyiogugu in Aboh Mbaise local government area of Imo state Nigeria. His name, Obinna, means “Father’s Heart” (God’s Mind).

ICYMI: Court Unfreezes Accounts Blocked By CBN For Cryptocurrency Trading

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has vacated with immediate effect an interim order through which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) froze the bank accounts in two banks of a firm that traded in cryptocurrency.

The firm, Rise Vest Technologies Ltd, is one of the firms offering brokerage services for Nigerians to invest in foreign stocks.

The CBN had claimed, among others, that some of such deals contravened its directive and were part of what was making the naira weaker to the United States Dollar.

But Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo held that the CBN could not rely on a mere circular to freeze the bank account of a company using its bank accounts to trade in cryptocurrency.

The judge noted that the CBN failed to provide any law showing that it is illegal to deal in cryptocurrency in Nigeria, adding that the CBN circular, referenced as BSD/DIR/PUB/LAB/014/001 of February 5, 2021, is not a law.

Justice Taiwo ordered the two banks to immediately grant the firm unfettered access to the accounts.

The court, in an October 18 ruling obtained by The Nation on Monday, made the order while deciding a Motion on Notice brought by Rise Vest Technologies, praying the court to discharge an interim freezing order granted by the court on August 17, 2021, in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/822/2021

The parties to the suit are CBN Governor (Plaintiff/Respondent) V Rise West Technologies Ltd (1st Defendant/Applicant) & five Others.

Rest Vest Technologies’ Counsel, Mr Seni Adio (SAN), had submitted that CBN did not present any evidence that the defendant engaged in any unlawful conduct, adding that the CBN did not meet its burden of proof in support of its allegations.

But CBN’s counsel Mr Mathew Onoja argued that the ex-parte orders of the court sought to be set aside were proper, lawful and valid.

He contented that the orders of August 17, 2021 in the suit were in accordance with the provisions of Section 97 (1) of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2021, which empowered the Plaintiff/Respondent to invoke the jurisdiction of the Court via an ex parte application.

In his ruling, Justice Taiwo upheld Adio’s argument.

The judge observed, among others, that although the CBN had power to investigate any infraction, the infraction must relate to BOFIA or any other enactment administered by the regulator.

Justice Taiwo held: “I have perused the counter affidavit of the Respondent and I see that the reason for freezing the account of the applicant is based on the alleged infraction of the circular of the CBN.

“The law is trite that any conduct that must be sanctioned must be expressly stated in a written law.

“Being unknown to law, circulars cannot create an offence because it was not shown to have been issued under an order, Act, Law or Statute.

“The learned counsel for the respondent has also raised the issue of public policy in his submissions against the application.

“Can this court decide this application based on public policy as being urged on it by the learned counsel for the respondent? I think not.

“I hereby discharge the interim freezing order of this court made on August 17, 2021, made against the defendant/ applicant.”

Arsenal vs Leeds United: Chambers Helps Gunners Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Calum Chambers scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute to help Arsenal secure a 2-0 victory over Leeds in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Just seconds after replacing the injured Ben White 10 minutes into the second half, Chambers made an instant impact heading Nicolas Pepe’s knockback inches over the goal line despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The Gunners made the game safe when former Leeds loanee Eddie Nketiah pounced on Liam Cooper’s poor defensive header before lifting the ball over the onrushing Meslier.
Nketiah, who made just two league starts in 17 appearances for Leeds during the 2019/20 season before having his loan spell cut short at Elland Road, almost fluffed his lines in front of an open goal, but his scuffed shot found the net to seal Arsenal’s spot in the quarter-finals.
The Gunners, who extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games, will now wait to see who they will face in the last eight.

Protesting Ex-Agitators Barricade Ayade’s Office Over Unpaid ‘Settlement’, Reject N.5m Gift

Some ex-agitators on Monday stormed the Governor’s office in Calabar to demand payment of the money allegedly promised them in 2018 after they laid down their arms in exchange for amnesty.
They blocked the road and prevented vehicular movement in the area.

The ex-agitators led by one “Timaya” caused created panic despite the presence of policemen at the gate and the road leading to the Governor’s Office.
Their leader said they were protesting the non-payment of their money due since December 2018.
“We are not going anywhere until the governor settles us,” the ex-agitators said in unison.
The plea by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Governor’s office, Dr Alfred Mboto, to allow government time to sort out their issue fell on deaf ears.
For several hours, Mboto continued to plead with the ex-agitators to go but they remained adamant and he had to offer them N500,000 which they rejected.
It led to an argument which got Mboto angry and he left.
After he left, some of the ex-agitators started hitting the gate in anger, with the policemen remaining calm.
Earlier, Mboto had told them that Governor Ben Ayade was working on their case, but they got angry the more, as one of them said, Since 2018, the governor has reneged on agreement.

N780m Fraud: Ex-SGF Anyim Spends Second Night In EFCC Cell

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, has spent the second night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abuja, where he was being held since Sunday afternoon in connection with the ongoing probe of a former Aviation Minister, Senator Stella Oduah.

Anyim, who responded to an invitation from the anti-graft agency in respect of a N780 million aviation ministry’s fund, has been held since Sunday afternoon.
The former Senate President was grilled on Sunday for several hours in connection with the fund which was traced to a company in which he was a director.
The detention of the former SGF is coming days after Oduah was named in the Pandora Papers as one of 10 Nigerians hiding their wealth in tax havens.

The EFCC is believed to have commenced a probe of Oduah and others named in the report.
Our correspondent gathered that the 60-year-old was again quizzed on Monday on how the ministry’s fund found its way into his company’s account and his relationship with Oduah.
Sources said Anyim, who was Senate President between 2000 and 2003, would be released after the investigators are satisfied with his responses to the series of questions put to him in respect to the slush fund.

It was learnt that the principal suspect in the matter, Oduah, would soon be invited for a session with the investigators.
A senior officer said, “The former SGF is still with us answering some hard questions on how the N780m found its way into his company’s account.
“He is cooperating but we would only release him on bail after he has provided satisfactory answers to our queries.”
The Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, did not respond to calls for detailed update on the case.

Former South Korean President, Roh Tae-woo, Dies At 88

Former South Korean president, Roh Tae-woo has died at the aged of 88, according to his aides.
The aides said that Roh, who served as president from 1988 to 1993, was recently admitted to hospital after his health deteriorated.

Roh, a former general, succeeded former president Chun Doo Hwan after helping him seize power through a 1979 military coup.
The coup filled a power vacuum created by the death of former authoritarian President Park Chung Hee.

As pro-democracy rallies spread massively across the nation in 1987, Roh accepted calls for a direct presidential system and was elected president later that year through a direct vote.
In an apparent bid to shed his military image, Roh began his administration under the slogan of opening an era of ordinary people.

In 1996, Roh and Chun were convicted of corruption and mutiny for their role in the 1979 military coup and in the brutal crackdown on the 1980 pro-democracy uprising in the South-western city of Gwangju.
Roh was sentenced to 17 years in prison and faced around $260 billion won (223 million dollars) in fines. He was pardoned in 1997.

Football: Don’t Bring Back Ighalo, Fans Tell Pinnick

NIGERIAN fans have questioned the desire of the President of the Nigeria Football Federation to bring back striker Odion Ighalo to the Super Eagles.

Ighalo quit the Eagles two years ago, after leading the team to a third-place finish at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, emerging as tournament top scorer with five goals.

Pinnick, who visited England-based Super Eagles players, said stated on Instagram on Monday that he had appealed to Ighalo to reconsider his decision to quit the national team.
“I had a long conversation with Odion Ighalo, personally I believe we need experience in our attack to combine with our energetically youthful (Victor) Osimhen, (Paul) Onuachu, Kelechi (Iheanacho) et al. Odion’s (Ighalo) body language is very positive. We are also in touch with his agents and club,” Pinnick wrote on Instagram. However, several Nigerians, who commented on Pinnick’s post, questioned the NFF boss’ decision to bring back Ighalo to the team.
“I think you started very well until your mention of Odion Ighalo. Odion is on retirement, let’s focus on Osimhen, (Taiwo) Awoniyi, and Onuachu who are going a great job at the club and national level,” @fidelenny wrote.
@chidon2901 added, “I feel really disgusted hearing about Ighalo, damn, Osimhen is world rave of the moment, Ighalo has paid his dues, actually, the team needs a creative midfielder and a winger who can score and assist, so he should be talking of Victor Moses coming and also tell Rohr to get a creative midfielder, not striker at all, Osimhen is Afcon qualifier top scorer.”
According to @mr_tee_, the team should also try and bring back former captains Jay jay Okocha and Mikel Obi since Pinnick said the Eagles needed experience.
“Was about to applaud your write-up until Ighalo was mentioned, you should also speak to Okocha and Mikel, their creativity and experience are needed in the midfield,” he posted.

Kogi: Bread Sellers Beg For Spaces To Sell Product

The Chairman, Association of Bakers, Gabriel Adeniyi, has appealed to the Kogi State Government to reconsider its decision to chase away bread sellers from their selling points in the Lokoja metropolis.
This follows the state government’s directive that motor parks within

Lokoja and its environs be relocated to Lokoja Terminal Park for transport operations.
Consequently, roadside sellers were also ordered to relocate their selling points away from the major roads within the state capital.
However, the chairman urged the government to allow bread sellers to remain at their selling points as their operations would not in any way affect its policy.
Adeniyi hinted that since their products “are staple food and travellers usually patronise bread for consumption, it is expedient that the services of bread sellers are available.
He explained that his plea to the government was necessitated due to the “recent happening which shows that security men were deployed in strategic areas like Ganaja and Nataco-Seriki Noman, Lokoja, where bread sellers were chased away.”
He said, “The buyers of our products are majorly travellers and Ganaja junction, as well as Nataco/seriki noma, where bread sellers are found populated, are affected by government’s decision.
“We appeal to the state government to relax its decision as it will have a severe burden on bakers who are presently facing economic hardship before production.”

Igboho: Your Conduct As AGF Unexemplary, Afenifere Slams Malami

The Pan Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has slammed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami over his conduct as the first law officer of the country.

This was contained in a statement signed by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, who noted that Malami would be prominent in the appraisal of the Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari regime, but not for the good reasons.

He said, “One of the individuals who will feature prominently whenever the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari is being appraised is Mallam Abubakar Malami, SAN.

He will feature prominently because of what he did – and makes the government he serves to do – while in that office.
“Unfortunately, his prominence would not be for exemplary positive contributions to the nation and to humanity but for the unprecedented damage he caused the administration he served to commit.”

Ajayi noted that Malami confirmed his shameful conduct when he tried to link Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to the terrorist group, Boko Haram, by creating a false narrative to establish a connection between the parties during his press conference on Friday, October 22.
“To worsen matters for Malami, he could not mention any specific act of terrorism carried out by Igboho especially in regard to the financial transactions he was so excited to roll out,” Ajayi added.
Ajayi, in the statement, added that the AGF’s conduct should not come as a surprise since during his ministerial screening his clear motive was to clamp down on something that was not as prominent as it is currently.

“The level of agitation for self-determination had not been this much, although Afenifere and others were even by then talking about restructuring.
“Thus, for Malami to, even at the time of his ministerial screening, talk about laws on ‘treason and treasonable felony’ meant that he came to the office with a mission. A mission to quell any attempt by Nigerians to call for good governance.

“For, it is on record that most paranoid regimes in the country always interpreted advocacy for good governance as ‘an attack on government’. To them, a criticism of government is close to felony,” Ajayi added.

Bayern Munich vs Hoffenheim: Lewandowski, Gnabry Score To Keep Bayern Top Of Bundesliga

Robert Lewandowski stated his case for the Ballon d’Or by scoring his 10th Bundesliga goal in nine games this season for leaders Bayern Munich in a 4-0 romp at home to Hoffenheim on Saturday.
Having claimed a record 41 Bundesliga goals last season, Lewandowski has picked up where he left off.
The Poland striker is among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or on November 29 having been named FIFA’s best male player of 2020.

Lewandowski showed his class with a stunning strike after Serge Gnabry gave the hosts a first-half lead in front of 60,000 fans at the Allianz Arena, the biggest home crowd since the pandemic hit Germany in March 2020.

Replacements Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman grabbed late goals to seal the win which keeps Bayern a point clear at the top of the table ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who won 3-1 at Arminia Bielefeld.

Bayern dominated even though head coach Julian Nagelsmann is quarantining at home after testing positive for Covid-19.
“It was a deserved victory. The team played very strong football for 30 minutes,” said Nagelsmann’s assistant coach Dino Toppmoeller.
“After going 2-0 up, there was a lack of sharpness in defence. In the end, we stepped up a gear.”
“We’ll all be happy if Julian comes back as soon as possible.”

Gnabry’s opening goal came after he had already had one disallowed. Lewandowski had also chipped Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann only to watch the ball fly agonisingly wide of the post.

Bayern finally made their domination count on 16 minutes when Jamal Musiala played the ball in to Gnabry, who fired between Baumann’s legs for his sixth league goal this season.
Lewandowski made it 2-0 with a superb finish from the edge of the area.

The floodgates opened with eight minutes left as Choupo-Moting and then Coman fired home to complete the rout.
– Dortmund respond to Ajax rout -Borussia Dortmund bounced back from their midweek Champions League drubbing at Ajax against Arminia Bielefeld.

Emre Can and Mats Hummels claimed first-half goals before England midfielder Jude Bellingham dribbled past defenders, then chipped the ball in from a tight angle.

“We wanted to give an answer here to the game on Tuesday, which was unfortunately, a step backwards,” admitted Hummels.
With regular penalty-taker Erling Braut Haaland sidelined with a hip injury, Can stepped up to convert an early spot-kick.
Hummels produced a spectacular volley from the edge of the area to make it 2-0 at half-time before Bellingham grabbed the third 18 minutes from time. Striker Fabian Klos converted a late Bielefeld penalty.
Freiburg remain the only unbeaten team in Germany’s top flight and rose to third with a 2-0 win at Wolfsburg, thanks to goals by Philipp Lienhart and Lucas Hoeler.
Wolfsburg won their first four league games under Mark van Bommel to lead the table in mid-September, but four straight defeats leave them eighth.
Second-half goals by Emil Forsberg, Yussuf Poulsen, Dominik Szoboszlai, who set up the fourth for 18-year-old Hugo Novoa Ramos on his league debut, saw RB Leipzig fight back to claim a 4-1 home win over bottom side Greuther Fuerth.

The win eases pressure on American head coach Jesse Marsch after Leipzig lost their first three Champions League games, including Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.

Tributes As Pele Celebrates 81st Birthday

Pele celebrated his 81st birthday on Saturday, apparently in good shape, despite his fragile health after a month in hospital following the discovery of a tumor in September.
“My birthday is coming!

They have already prepared the cake …” wrote the Brazilian football legend on social media on Friday, with a photo that showed him smiling, eating a cake iced like a soccer pitch with an enormous football in the middle.

On Saturday morning, the tributes poured in.
Santos, where played from 1956 to 1974, wished him “a long life” and “a happy birthday”.
The club has also prepared a celebration for their game against America on Saturday, with a shirt with a patch in tribute to the king of Brazilian soccer designed for the occasion and a song planned for the 10th minute. Pele traditionally wore the number 10.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as “Pele”, the only player to win three World Cups (1958, 1962, 1970) is undergoing chemotherapy after being admitted to hospital on August 31 for routine examinations which detected a “suspicious” tumor in his colon.
He had surgery four days later and spent about ten days in an intensive care unit, where he returned briefly a few days later because of breathing difficulties, before leaving hospital on September 30.

The result of the tumor biopsy was never made public, but doctors said Pele will have to undergo “chemotherapy.”
Pele has worried his fans often with his fragile health and has been admitted to hospital several times for various health problems.

Cardiff Fires Coach McCarthy After Eighth Straight Defeat

Cardiff have sacked manager Mick McCarthy following their 2-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday – their eighth loss in as many games.
The latest setback means the Bluebirds have picked up just 11 points from their 14 Championship games so far this season.
As well as losing eight games in a row, Cardiff have not scored a goal since Sean Morrison netted in their 5-1 defeat at Blackburn on September 25.

McCarthy’s assistant Terry Connor has also left the club. Steve Morison and Tom Ramasut will oversee first-team duties while the club search for a new manager.
Cardiff confirmed McCarthy’s dismissal in a statement released shortly after the defeat to Boro, adding, “We would like to thank Mick and Terry for their efforts during their time with the Bluebirds and wish them all the best for the future.”

McCarthy joined Cardiff in January on a short-term deal as a replacement for Neil Harris and enjoyed a stellar start to his reign, leading the club on an 11-game unbeaten run.
The 62-year-old was handed a two-year deal in March and oversaw his 1,000th game as a manager during his time at the Cardiff City Stadium – a 0-0 draw at Huddersfield.

His arrival at Cardiff came after a brief spell in Cyprus with APOEL. He has also managed Millwall, Sunderland, Ipswich and Wolves – plus the Republic of Ireland on two occasions – during a 29-year coaching career.
“As soon as the second goal goes in, you see what has been happening all season for Cardiff. They lose their way, their discipline, their shape and, to be honest, Middlesbrough probably could have had a couple more.
“It was a really poor performance and it is the manner of the performances, the manner of the losses that is what has got Mick McCarthy in trouble. You are looking and thinking: ‘Where’s the plan?’
“We saw the charge for 15 minutes at the start of the second half. They don’t get the goal and are perhaps a little bit unlucky.

You could see what they did for the crowd, who got behind the team, but they didn’t get the goal and then conceded the second.
“We have seen it so often this season where their heads seem to go down and they seem to lose their discipline, the spaces in between the defence, the midfield and the attack seem to become bigger.

“Where do Cardiff go from here? I really don’t know. It’s a tough one and something needs to happen because the way the players are performing and the body language of some of them is just not right.”
Cardiff had made an anxious start against Middlesbrough with McCarthy under intense scrutiny, and were soon peppered by shots from Paddy McNair, Martin Payero and Andraz Sporar.

With half an hour gone, Cardiff fans’ nerves were tested when ex-Bluebird Sol Bamba had a powerful header well saved by Alex Smithies, but things quickly got worse within two minutes when the visitors were awarded a controversial penalty.

Sporar’s shot from outside the box struck the hand of Mark McGuinness, which was down by his side, on its way through to Smithies. Referee Jeremy Simpson pointed to the spot, with Sporar on hand to tuck home his third goal of the season (35).
Matt Crooks came close to doubling the visitors’ lead shortly afterwards, but he managed to drag a shot wide of the left-hand post despite appearing to have plenty of time to pick his spot from the edge of the box.
Cardiff exploded into life after the break, desperate to salvage something from the game. Flint saw a series of shots blocked, before Joe Lumley reacted well to push away a bouncing effort from James Collins and Flint’s downward header agonisingly hit the underside of the crossbar.

But Middlesbrough kept their composure, managed to take control of the game again and piled the misery on their stricken opponents when Uche Ikpeazu’s searching cross was moved on by Sporar to Payero, who finished well (75) to seal the points – and seal McCarthy’s fate.

He also noted that the presence of Dr. Fayemi and erstwhile governor of Ekiti, Segun Oni at the wedding should serve as a lesson to Nigerians to eschew politics of bitterness and hatred.
“Here you have former governors of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, Fayose, and current Governor Fayemi. They have a ruled Ekiti one time or the other. They are not in the same political party.
“So, those of you who want to die because of us politicians, please politics, governance is not something that should lead to anybody losing his or her life.”
Governor Makinde cautioned those bent on dividing Nigeria along religious lines to take a cue from the Fayose and Adekunle Abdul families, who despite being Christians and Moslems respectively, consented to their children getting married.
“People that want to divide this country on religious line, they should have a rethink. We are here celebrating not only culture coming together, but also religious tendencies coming together,” he said.
The Oyo State governor commended Governor Wike and the delegation from Rivers State for gracing the occasion and identifying with the families of the couple.
Governor Makinde, who prayed God to bless the couple with children, peace and prosperity, advised them to harmonise their respective dreams and aspiration in order to avoid friction and unwarranted bickering in their marriage.
“I want to congratulate Olamide and Oluwanigba. This is the beginning of a journey and our prayer is that this will produce children,” the statement stated.

Genk Demand Spurs Pay £20m For Onuachu

ENGLISH Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur, have been told to pay £20m by Genk for the service of Nigeria international Paul Onuachu.
The North London club managed to keep their most prized asset, Harry Kane, from joining Manchester City in the last transfer window but are preparing for life after the England forward.

Following his impressive performance from last season, the Super Eagles striker has been linked with a host of top European clubs with Tottenham believed to be leading the chase for the striker.
According to football.london, the 27-year-old, who has torn it up in the Belgian league with Genk, has been listed among the players wanted by Tottenham.

“Spurs and Fabio Paratici, in particular, have found out the price they need to pay if they want to secure the signing of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu as Harry Kane’s long-term replacement,” the website wrote.

“Despite his quiet performance at the London Stadium on Wednesday night, the Nigerian has been tearing it up so far in all competitions with 11 goals in 16 games at the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

“In relation to his nine goals scored this term in the Jupiler Pro League 21/22, that’s a rate of 1.12 goals and assists per 90 minutes, according to FBref.com.
“An impressive statistic for the 27-year-old, who has outperformed Tottenham’s number 9 for the abundance of goals scored at the start of this season.
“The report goes on to clarify that Genk are demanding around £20m if they are to let go of their serial goalscorer in the next summer transfer window which seems reasonable on the face of it, considering that Transfermarkt value him close to that valuation at £19.80m.”

Beware Of New Virus That Steals Banking Details, NCC Alerts Nigerians

The Nigerian Communications Commission has alerted millions of Nigerian telecom consumers of the existence of new, high-risk, and extremely damaging, Malware called Flubot.
The commission warns that the virus steals banking details from devices.

This was contained in a press statement by the commission titled, ‘NCC alerts telecom consumers on Flubot Malware… Lists measures to guard against attack.”
NCC noted that according to the information received from the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team, Flubot “targets Androids with fake security updates and App installations”.
The statement quoted ngCERT as affirming that Flubot “impersonates Android mobile banking applications to draw fake web view on targeted applications and its goal transcends stealing personal data and essentially targets stealing of credit card details or online banking credentials.
FluBot is circulated through Short Message Service and can snoop “on incoming notifications, initiate calls, read or write SMSes, and transmit the victim’s contact list to its control centre.”

“This malware attacks Android devices by pretending to be “FedEx, DHL, Correos, and Chrome applications” and compels unsuspecting users to alter the accessibility configurations on their devices in order to maintain a continuous presence on devices.

“The new malware undermines the security of devices by copying fake login screens of prominent banks, and the moment the users enter their login details on the fake pages, their data is harvested and transmitted to the malware operators’ control point from where the data is exploited by intercepting banking-related One Time Passwords and replacing the default SMS app on the targeted Android device.

“Consequently, it secures admittance into the device through SMS and proceeds to transmit similar messages to other contacts that may be on the device it has attacked enticing them into downloading the fake app.
“It suffices to say that, when Flubot infects a device, it can result in incalculable financial losses.

Additionally, the malware creates a backdoor which grants access to the user’s device, thus enabling the invader or attacker to perform other criminal actions, including launching other variants of malware.”
How to guard against the virus
The NCC hereby wishes to reiterate the advisory of ngCERT as follows:
In view of this discovery and understanding of the process by which this malware operates, and in order to protect millions of telecom consumers and prevent criminal forces, irrespective of location, from using telecom platforms to perpetrate fraud and irredeemable damages, the NCC advised that:
1. Do not click on the link if you receive a suspicious text message, and do not install any app or security update the page asks you to install.

2. Use updated antivirus software that detects and prevents malware infections.

3. Apply critical patches to the system and application.

4. Use strong passwords and enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) over logins.

5. If you have been affected by this campaign, you should reset your device to factory mode as soon as possible. This will delete any data on your phone, including personal data.
6. Do not restore from backups created after installing the app. You may contact ngCERT on *incident@cert.gov.ng* for technical assistance.

7. You will also need to change the passwords to all of your online accounts, with urgency, around your online bank accounts.
8. If you have concerns that your accounts may have been accessed by unauthorised people, contact your bank immediately.

I Was Sexually Abused As A Teenager, Says Ex-Man United Defender Evra

Former Manchester United and France defender Patrice Evra has said he was sexually abused as a teenager.
In an interview to publicise his new autobiography, Evra told The Times on Friday the abuse took place when he was a 13-year-old schoolboy.

The now 40-year-old Evra said that far more difficult than detailing the abuse in his autobiography or speaking about it an interview, was telling his mother for the first time.

“Of course, she was devastated,” he told The Times. “It was a tough moment for me. I have still to tell a few of my brothers and sisters and close friends.”

Evra said he had decided to make a public revelation in order to help children who may be in a similar situation.
“I don’t want people to feel pity,” he explained. “It’s a difficult situation.
“A mother does not expect to hear this from their own child…
“Only now when I am 40 years old do I tell her. It was a big shock for her.

A lot of anger. She said she was sorry.
“She said: ‘You must not put it in your book, it’s private Patrice,’ but that’s when I say, mum, it’s not about me, it’s about other kids then she says OK, she understands.”
Evra added he did not plan to take legal action against his alleged assailant.
“The first thing my mum says is, ‘if you don’t sue him, I’ll sue him. If he’s still alive, I’m going to kill him’…But I buried this thing so deep I didn’t think about (prosecution).”

Evra also told The Times that when he was 24 and playing for Monaco, he received a call from police regarding accusations against his alleged abuser but that he felt unable to tell them what had happened to him.
“Living with that was one of my biggest regrets because I could have helped so many people,” he added.
