Health: Delta Community Protest Poor Condition Of General Hospital

The people of Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, have protested the poor state of the General Hospital, Ozoro.
In a peaceful protest, led by the President General of Ozoro Kingdom, Chief Miller Akpoili, the residents marched through some streets down to the hospital gate, to register their displeasure and disapproval of the poor condition of services in the hospital.

Map of Delta State

The protesters carried different placards with inscriptions such as ‘No doctor, no nurses’, ‘Dead hospital’, ‘No General Hospital in Ozoro’, and so many others.
They said that the hospital, which was founded in 1953, required renovation and equipment adding that it also lacked many things, including manpower.

According to the protesters, the people of the local government area receive no service from the hospital, saying that the facility lacked doctors and nurses.
A resident, who simply identified himself as Mr Omovo, said, “The basic function of the government is to put in place health facilities, hospitals with qualified doctors, nurses and the best equipment to cater for the health of the citizens because health is life.

“Ozoro with the highest population of Isoko nation, with a university, cannot sit down and watch while their citizens suffer poor health condition; people are being rushed to the hospital daily but no doctors, no nurses, no equipment to give assistance to the dying patients.
“We the Ozoro people in general, use this peaceful protest to send a signal to our governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and to all Ozoro sons and daughters working in all government organisations because we can no longer sit down and watch while our people keep dying every day.

Come to our rescue by bringing more doctors, nurses and equipment to Ozoro General Hospital.”

Spokesman for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Omoni also said the dismembered body of the schoolboy had been recovered and his remains deposited in a mortuary, adding that the suspects’ arrest was made possible through intelligence gathering.
The statement reads,” The Rivers State Police Command has arrested the trio of Kenneth Sylvanus ‘m’ 24yrs, a native of Azumini Isiokpo, Chibuzor Amadi ‘m’ 33yrs, a native of Omademe both in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State and Chijioke Ogbonnah ‘m’ 37yrs, a herbalist from Abia State but resides in Omagwa in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It’s Her Fault: Nigerian Lady Who Died In Ivorian Prison Reported Her Plight After Two Years In Jail – Dabiri-Erewa

The Chairperson, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has blamed Itunu Babalola, the Nigerian lady who died in an Ivorian prison, saying she reported her plight late to the Nigerian Commission in Ivory Coast.

Dabiri-Erewa said this during an interview on The Morning Show programme of Arise TV, monitored by our correspondent. She stated that Itunu had spent two years in jail before the matter was reported.
She said, “She did not inform the mission about the trial. She had spent two years in jail, then her father cried out for help. Perhaps, when she had issues with the burglar and policeman that was changing the case and reported to the Mission, maybe it would have been a different story.”
The former member of the House of Representatives, however, stated that the Nigerian Ambassador to Ivory Coast, Martin Adamu, immediately swung into action after the matter came to his knowledge.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that the Ivorian prosecutor said the victim should not be in jail.
She said, “But as soon as the ambassador got to know about it they immediately took action. First, they went to see her when she was in prison, somewhere outside Abidjan and got a lawyer. They also got money together for the lawyer to even begin the case. And the money was raised within the Nigerian community and the Nigerian Mission quickly. The lawyer gave an assurance that it was a case for an appeal. In fact, the prosecutor made it clear that the girl (Itunu) shouldn’t be in jail.”
Babalola’s case became public in March 2021, after a journalist, David Hundeyin shared her story on Twitter.
The 21-year-old from Oyo State was a trader based in Bondoukou, Cote d’Ivoire before her apartment was burgled by an Ivorian in September 2019. She landed in jail after refusing a settlement from an Ivorian police officer on the burgled items.
Unfortunately, Babalola died on Sunday, 14 November, after reportedly contracting an infection in prison. Dabiri-Erewa added that the deceased was not involved in human trafficking despite using the name ‘Becky Paul’ while in Ivory Coast.
She said, “We wouldn’t know because she is dead now, maybe she was afraid. But whatever the case, she was not involved in human trafficking.”

Wickedness: As Man Arrested In Abia Confessed To Selling Baby Boy After Lying To Wife He Died

Abia state police command has arrested 40-year-old Appolos Ndubuisi along with his co-conspirator, Rose Godwin Chinweikpe, 66 for selling a baby boy belonging to one Deborah Onukaogu, 24 a supposed wife of Appolos Ndubuisi, Gisthub24 gathered

Commissioner of Police Abia command, CP Janet Agbede while briefing newsmen at the command headquarters on Thursday said Deborah Onukaogu in 2020 became pregnant for Appolos Ndubuisi, a native of Umuariaga village in Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State.

The CP said Onukaogu told the command that Appolos Ndubuisi did not observe the traditional or Christian marriage to make his legally married wife.

Appolos Ndubuisi was said to have taken Onukaogu to one unlicensed Maternity home at Owo-Ahia-afor in Obingwa Local Government of the state, owned and operated by one Rose Godwin Chinweikpe, the second suspect.

Onukaogu was said to have delivered a baby boy on 26 June, 2021 which the suspects conspired and claimed that the baby died.

The police boss stated further, “The complainant Mrs. Deborah Onukaogu accepted the story in good faith and subsequently became pregnant to same man Appolos Ndubuis.

“According to her, Appolos suggested that she should go to the same purported maternity home where she had the alleged stillbirth. The complainant objected but the supposed husband Appolos Ndubuisi insisted telling her that they will sell the unborn child on delivery.

“This statement heightened the suspicion of the complainant on what must have happened to the previous child which they claimed died on delivery and she immediately reported to the Police.

“Investigation revealed that the purported stillbirth was a deceit to the complainant. This is because the complainant delivered a baby boy on 26 June 2021 but the suspects conspired and sold the child for the sum of Three hundred and fifty thousand Naira (N350,000.*).

“Further investigation revealed that the sum of Three hundred thousand naira (N300,000.00) was given to Appolos, the presumed husband to Deborah while the balance of Fifty thousand naira (50,000) was taken by Rose Godwin as her delivery expenses”.

The revered cleric noted that he was least qualified among the suitors for Titilope, his wife.

He said, “There were many of us contesting for the hand of my wife. I wanted to marry a beautiful princess but I was the least qualified among the many suitors. Out of the number, three of us were in the forefront.

“But I was a student, while one of us was a lawyer who owned a car. All I had was a ‘foot wagon’ (moving around on foot). I decided to let her know my financial status.

“I said to her, ‘Please, listen. I have nothing; no money, no house, no influence, nothing.’ I told her that if I had anything at all, it was the little brain God gave to me. ‘I have nothing to offer you except myself. If you will marry me, you will have me to yourself completely.”

FG’s 2022 Budget Laced With Fake Items To Defraud Nigerians – Melaye

A civil rights movement under the aegis of Anti-Corruption Network on Thursday has picked holes in the 2022 budget which, it alleged, was “laced with fake items” running into billions of naira to allegedly “defraud the citizens”.
The organisation also condemned the Presidency and Federal Inland Revenue Service Commission’s proposed budgets for 2022, describing them as a monumental fraud.

The Executive Secretary of ACN and former chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory in the 8th National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, made the observations during a press conference in Abuja.
According to him, the current budgeting system in Nigeria is “a monumental national disgrace.”
The PUNCH reported that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in October presented a budget proposal of N16.39 trillion for the year 2022 to the Joint Session of the National Assembly.
But Melaye said that over 60 per cent of corruption issues in Nigeria were built and legalised in the budget.
He said that with Nigeria’s annual budgets laced with fake items running into billions of naira, budget fraud would be nothing but the real foundation of all corrupt practices in the country.
Melaye, who represented Kogi West Senatorial District, made reference to the 2022 budget and wondered why the FIRS budget which stood at N228 billion would surpass the budget of the National Assembly pegged at N134 billion and N120 billion proposed for the judiciary.
He claimed that the FIRS budget also surpassed the current 2021 budgets of Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara states.
He said, “In the FIRS 2022 budget proposal, the tax body earmarked N2.5bn for the purchase of land, N3bn for office furniture, N1.5bn for photocopying machines, N2.04bn for computers and N500m for the construction of sports facilities. The agency set aside N1bn for generator fuel and N250m for maintenance while a separate N550m was set aside for purchasing more generators.
“How on earth can the FIRS budget sum of N2.8bn for “uniforms and clothing” for the year 2022 and in defence, the FIRS Chairman through his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Johannes Wojuola, had the guts to say that the word “uniform” is the corporate outfit (dressing allowance) to be enjoyed by all the staff…”
“Is it the Presidency? The Presidency proposed budget for 2022 stands at N150.5bn and the sum of 24.8bn was budgeted for the President. It was budgeted that the President will spend the sum of N775.6m for his local travel and transport while the sum of N1.5bn will be spent on International travel and transport (No wonder Mr. President is travelling up and down).
“The 2022 budget of the Vice President stands at N1.1bn. The Vice President is to spend the sum of 301.9m for his local travel and transport while the sum of N476.2m will be spent on International travel and transport. N6.3m will be spent on office stationeries/computer consumables, the sum of N4.6m will be spent on printing non-security documents.
“The Vice President foodstuff/catering material supplies stand at N156.6m. Miscellaneous is N99.7m, Refreshment & Meals is earmarked 20.2m while Honorarium & sitting allowance is N30.2m. The Vice President is to spend N18.8m on publicity and advertisement, N23.2m on welfare packages, and N5.4m on sporting activities.”
Melaye described as “most unfortunate”, the fact that the nation’s collective wealth had been consistently looted under the guise of budget padding which, he said, now calls for serious scrutiny.

Ex-Boko Haram Fighters Protest In Transit Camp

Former Boko Haram fighters who have surrendered to the Nigerian government and are kept at various camps within Maiduguri are protesting their long stay in the camps.

The protesting ex-fighters are those kept at the Maiduguri transit camp within the metropolis. This protest, according to sources is the fourth time the ex-fighters are protesting on their prolonged stay in confinement.
According to a source among the security personnel guarding the camp, the ex-fighters demanded that the government either release them into society or find a way to engage them as they are said to be tired of being idle for months in the camp.
The former Boko Haram fighters said they have been kept in the camp for about four months without doing anything. They said they have been separated from their wives – with some having three, four wives.

During the protest, the surrendered terrorists destroyed public infrastructures in the camp, a source disclosed to The PUNCH on Thursday.
According to the same source, some of the former terrorists housed in other camps within the town are already escaping into society without the permission of the authorities.
“Some of them in other camps are escaping from the camp. They are running out of the camps after getting tired of being in the camp without doing anything and the government has done nothing to stop the escape,” the source noted.
It would be recalled that since the clash between factions of the terrorist groups led to the death of a factional leader, Abubakar Shekau some months ago, the former fighters, their wives and children, came out of the bush and surrendered to the Nigerian Government in their thousands and have been kept in different camps within Maiduguri after profiling them by the Nigerian military.
“Since their surrender, the government has been feeding them and giving them N10,000 as allowances every month. On the latest protest, the ex-fighters were being given some of these basic necessities but some of them did not get the items as such they began to protest leading to chaos in the camp. This is besides the phones, clothing and other basic amenities that are made available to them in the camps,” another source within the security circle in Maiduguri confided in The PUNCH.

Fans Want Eagles Coach Rohr Sacked Despite Playoffs.

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, must be sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation following the team’s lacklustre home draw against Cape Verde at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Tuesday.
It was a nervy moment across the country as the Eagles played a 1-1 draw to book a place in the final round of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Eagles were pegged backwards towards the end of the final Group C game as Pedro Brito’s men pushed forward in search of the winning goal that could have seen them overtake Nigeria on the table.
Despite the Eagles’ qualification for the play-offs next March, fans were left unconvinced by the performance of the team and Rohr’s conservative approach, and once again called for the sack of the Franco-German tactician.
Former England striker of Nigerian descent John Fashanu said Rohr should have been sacked long before now.
“I do not agree with my fellow Nigerians who are just coming out to say this man (Rohr) should be sacked now because for me, he should have been sacked a long time ago,” Fashanu told PUNCH Sports Extra.
“For us to get to where we want to get, I don’t think Rohr is the best man for the job because our football is drowning.
“We are talking about one of the smallest countries in Africa compared to the largest country in Africa. We have some of the best players in the world who play for some of the best clubs in Europe. We played at home and we couldn’t get a win, which is very bad.”
Atlant ‘96 Olympic Games gold medallist, Abiodun Obafemi, added, “This is not the first time we have been saying this and when I say we, I am referring to football-loving Nigerians, Rohr has not added anything to the Eagles since he took over.
“As far as I am concerned, he is one of the worst coaches Nigeria has ever had and I think it is time we moved on because this man doesn’t understand the passion Nigerians have for football.
“We lost the little prestige we had in Africa when Central African Republic came to Lagos and beat us. Now, we couldn’t even pick up a win against Cape Verde.”
A football fan, Alex Ebhodaghe, expressed his dismay at the poor performance of the Eagles against the Blue Sharks.
He said, “When I thought I had seen it all with my club Manchester United, I couldn’t believe I had to go through such a mental torture during that game. It got to a point I couldn’t finish the match because I got so scared and my heart was beating so fast.
“I don’t want to die of high blood pressure. I don’t think I want to watch the next game except Rohr is not the man in charge of the game.”
Another fan Deji Adelana added, “I watched the game in a viewing centre and we were all nervous towards the end because a goal from Cape Verde would have ruled us out of the World Cup.
“We were all tensed and immediately people started calling for the sack of the coach and I totally agreed with them. I have said it before and I am saying it again: it’s time for this man who has come to Nigeria to collect a pension to go.”
“I don’t want to talk too much other than to beg the NFF to just sack this man who almost killed millions of Nigerians on Tuesday,” Tope Adekunle told PUNCH Sports Extra.
Nigeria managed just one win from three at home in the qualifiers as they beat Liberia 2-0, before losing to 115th-ranked Central African Republic and ending with Tuesday’s uninspiring draw against the Cape Verdeans.
The poor home run also brought Rohr’s management and coaching style into the spotlight as he approaches six years in charge of the side.
Lagos fans, known to voice out their frustrations after Eagles poor outings, did not boo the players after the tie on Tuesday, but hailed Napoli striker, the scorer of the only goal, for his man-of-the-match display.
Rohr still has the support of his players, including Osimhen, despite the declining fortunes of the national team.
“What’s important is getting to the next stage of the qualifying, that’s what the target was and I’m proud we could achieve that,” Osimhen told BBC Sport Africa.
The coach also seems to have the backing of his employers NFF, despite a massive backlash by football-crazy fans on social media.
“The World Cup play-off follows in March so what the coach needs is our full support. He will not get the sack,” BBC Sport Africa quoted an unnamed NFF official as saying.

Ebonyi Driver Bites Off, Swallows Taskforce Member’s Finger

A commercial driver, on Tuesday, bit off the finger of a taskforce member in Ebonyi State to escape arrest.
The driver also swallowed the finger of the taskforce member identified as Iboko Kenneth.
The incident occurred at the Onuebonyi Junction in the Abakaliki metropolis, when the Ministry of Capital City

Development and the taskforce team were on an inspection tour within the state capital to stop illegal parking and loading.
Recall that commercial transport companies operating in the state had penultimate week relocated to Akubaraoha Central park, a new park provided for them by the state government.

The driver, it was further learnt, was among those spotted at the Onuebonyi Junction who engaged in illegal loading of passengers. When the taskforce attempted to arrest him, he was said to have bitten off the finger of one of them.
The victim has, however, been taken to the emergency unit of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi, described the incident as terrible, unexpected and barbaric.

He said, “It is very unfortunate that a driver can attack a law officer who is trying to organise the state to the point of chopping off his finger. This is terrible, unexpected and barbaric.
“So, I want to plead with the motorists not to pull our legs because the taskforce are not weak and we do our job within the confines of the law, but for a driver to chop-off a taskforce finger is unacceptable and I assure you that we will get to the root of the matter, it will not happen again.
“We are not using force but the problem is that our people are stubborn particularly the motorists, some of them anyway.

I want to commend some of the transport companies for their cooperation so far that led to the peaceful relocation of the parks within the city to the central park known as Akubaraoha Abakaliki Central Park. If you go there now, the park is very peaceful, businesses are going on, no complain.
“As the government, we are doing our best to fence the place and put internal roads and other social amenities.
“But we have discovered with dismay that some drivers are bent on operating from the streets instead of doing the needful and by joining their colleagues at the central park.
“My encounter with them this morning is evidence to that assertion. Along waterworks road, behind the police checkpoints there, we saw over 10 buses loading Enugu and Onitsha.
“We also took a patrol to Onuebonyi Junction where we saw 11 trucks, buses, and Sienna buses loading there not minding our repeated warnings to that effect.”
PUNCH Metro reports that the taskforce arrested five drivers for illegal loading.
According to the Commissioner, the arrested drivers would be arraigned in court.

Lagos police arrest 12 Over Killing Of CSP Kazeem Abonde

The Lagos State Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, says it has arrested 12 suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of police officer Kazeem Abonde, a Chief Superintendent of Police.

The late Abonde, a former Operations Officer of the Command, was killed on September 23 during a raid on criminal hideouts at Ajao Estate, Lagos.
A statement signed and issued on Tuesday in Lagos by the Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the suspects were arrested after diligent investigation was carried out.
“Arrest of one Ismaila Abdullahi Haruna, aged 23 years, and 11 other suspects was made possible as a result of a four-week intensive but diligent investigation carried out by crack detectives of the Command.
“The suspects, who confessed to the crimes of conspiracy, murder, attempted murder and wilful damage were arrested in their criminal hideouts in Lagos and Nasarawa States where they were hibernating to evade arrest after the dastardly act.
“During interrogation, the suspects gave a blow-by-blow account of how the brutal attack on the deceased police officer and other injured police officers was carried out and the criminal roles each played.
“Their arrest was facilitated by credible, actionable intelligence.” the statement read.
CSP Ajisebutu, however, added that all the suspects will be arraigned at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
“Recall that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, had in a press release issued on Sept. 24 vowed to arrest all suspects involved in the attack on the policemen.
“The Commissioner of Police, while thanking the bereaved family and other members of the public for their patience, understanding and support, equally vowed to ensure diligent prosecution of the case.
“The police, therefore, seek further cooperation of members of the public, particularly the Command’s strategic partners, by giving additional information that could lead to the arrest of other suspects still at large,” it added.

Global Crypto Market Value Exceeds $3tn For First Time

The world cryptocurrency market is worth more than $3 trillion for the first time, according to calculations Monday, as mainstream investors increasingly jump on board.
The value has reached $3.007 trillion (2.6 trillion euros), said CoinGecko, which tracks prices of more than 10,000 cryptocurrencies.“The crypto market is growing at a mind-blowing speed,” noted SwissQuote analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya.
“A part of it is speculation of course, but a part of it is real,” she told AFP.
“Crypto is now making its way to traditional finance and everyone is on board.”
Bitcoin, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency, hit a record-high $66,000 last month after taking another step towards mainstream status.
It surged back above $66,000 on Monday close to its all-time peak after a five percent jump.
Ethereum, the second biggest cryptocurrency by market value, hit a record high $4,768 on Monday.
A bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund, a type of financial instrument, launched on the New York Stock Exchange in October.
The ETF is a more accessible vehicle that puts bitcoin within the grasp of even more investors.
Some investors sees cryptocurrencies as a hedge against inflation, which is surging worldwide as economies reopen after pandemic lockdowns.
“Bitcoin is bouncing higher again, close to all-time highs,” Hargreaves Lansdown market analyst Susannah Streeter said Monday.
“The recent surge in the crypto… partly seems to have been caused by investors piling in, seeing it as a hedge against inflation,” Streeter added.
No more than 21 million bitcoin can be created, helping its price to trade way above its rivals, but trading of cryptocurrencies in general has shown to be extremely volatile with massive price swings a common occurrence.

Anambra Election: Agents Tackle Voter Apathy With House-To-House Mobilisation

Voter apathy has made agents go from house to house as well as call family members and friends on phone to come out and vote.

This was noticed at the Nkwo Market Square in Akwa Central area where some polling boots were empty while others had few voters on the queue while waiting to cast their votes. An All Progressives Grand Alliance agent, Joseph Nnake, said there is apathy because of fear. He said that they had to go to the residence of voters to urge them to come out and exercise their civic rights. He said the low turnout may work against the success of the election
He, however, noted that the election is peaceful as everyone involved is doing their jobs to deliver a free, fair and credible election.

Obi Cubana: EFCC Has Broken My Heart, Release Obi Cubana Now And Take Me In His Place! -Ifeany CY Njoku

A social media influencer and writer from Owerri the Capita of Imo State has called on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to release Obi Iyienu AKA OBI CUBANA and arrest him in his place.

The mbano born influencer state this on his Facebook wall with a caption “EFCC HAS BROKEN MY HEART ,RELEASE OBI CUBANA NOW AND TAKE ME IN HIS PLACE” he stated that continuous detention of Obi Cubana is not good to his business and investors across the world who are Cubana’s associates.

He also said that the flamboyancy shown during the burial of his mother few months ago was synonymous with his kind of business (show biz and promotion) and urge the anti graft agency to release Obi Cubana now and take him in his place.

Below are the post he made on his Facebook wall.

Dear Bawa, as the chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, your agency conntinuous detention of my good friend and Boss, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, Chairman Cubana Groups breaks my heart.

Obi Cubana is not a criminal, neither is he a Yahoo Boy. No, far from it,he is pure legit with grass to grace history.

As a showwbiz promoter, that he celebrated the Life and Time of his beloved late mother in a flamboyant way is akin to premium lifestyle and luxury synonymous with his kind of business as shownbiz promoter and entertainment enterprenuer.

That EFCC assumed the role of Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, as Tax collector by inviting/arresting/detaining Obi Cubana was against the letter and spirit of a constitutional demmocracy. FIRS knowns how to collect their taxes if there was a breach somewhere, through due process of law not harassment and embarrasssment by the EFCC.

Obi Cubana as business tycoon, showwbiz proomoter, entertainment and brand influencer, it’s normal in line of his business for investors to partner with him and make financial transactions and transfers, detaining him at EFCC for 3-days now counting is seen to be an act to pull him down and destroy his business by scaring away investors, partners and associates more so now his chains of business has spread across Africa and Europe.

I am not happy that a man of the people, Nigeria man of the year, okpataozuora Nigeria is still at the EFCC net even after a phantom administratiive bail and seizure of his international passport. EFCC this is not the way to encourage hardworking Nigeria youths!

I beckon on the EFCC chairman to unconditionally release Obi Cubana, a model and inspiration to millions of Nigeria and Africa youths.

I am not happy that EFCC didn’t stop at Obi Cubana but extending invitations and detaining his business associates is a targeted blackmail to destroy a growing business concern.

I therefore call on the EFCC chairman to arrest and detain me in place of Obi Cubana. I can stand in his place. He is a good man that doesn’t need to be destroyed.

My heart is broken, my heart is in pains, Obi Cubana is a true definition of a good man.

Plight Of Northern Nigerian Females

There is a caveat to the discourse of this column today. As the Yoruba would say, whomsoever the mud that is splashed hits should please forgive. Splashed mud, as you know, is a loose cannon.
Those who may be concerned should take a long term view of the problem and, for the love of humanity, take appropriate actions to right the systemic wrongs against females in Northern Nigeria.

The need of the northern female in Nigeria goes beyond mere statutory ceding 35 per cent of elective and appointive roles to womenfolk. It’s about empowering them to meaningfully contribute to Nigeria’s development.

At a recent workshop organised by Institute for Media and Society, it was established that certain categories of Nigerians – women, youths, people with disabilities, senior citizens and Internally Displaced Persons – are excluded from the political and electoral processes.
Exclusion of Northern Nigeria females from politics despite the token appointments as ministers, commissioners, deputy governors and board members, gets one worried when you hear about systemic wedges placed between women and participation in Nigeria’s political and electoral processes.
Women get little chance to express alternative views on any issue, be it political or social.

If they do, it amounts to sacrilege and is therefore, sanctionable. The story was told that a female professor from Northern Nigeria could not appear on a television talk show because her husband forbade it on the pain of divorce.
This violates Section 35(1) of Nigeria’s Constitution, which states that “Every person shall be entitled to his (or her) personal liberty and no person shall be deprived of such liberty….”
Also, Section 38(1) that guarantees “freedom of thought…,” and Section 39(1) that guarantees “freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.”

The reason the husband reportedly gave was that any female that appears on television is an “ashawo,” another word for a wayward female. That is why articulate Aisha Yusuf, and the other Aisha, who is Nigeria’s First Lady, are practically regarded as rebels.
This patriarchal culture hamstrings many Nigerian women, from the North or South, from attaining their best. To borrow a wisecrack from Bashorun MKO Abiola, the Nigerian political bird that precludes women from participating in politics is flying with one wing.

Early marriage of girls not older than 13 years is depriving Nigeria of a lot of potential talents. You’ll get the import of this collosal waste of human capital when you understand that most of the 13.5 million out of school children in Nigeria are females who have been railroaded into the junkyard of life.
To the number of male children, described as almajirai, there are probably many more that are female, who are just as helpless, because the system pays them no judicious notice as they sink further into the abyss of life.
By the time these bride-girls turn 19, they would have had close to four or five children and would have been furloughed by their husbands, who move on to younger girl-brides, especially if they have the misfortune of the dreadful Vesico Vaginal Fistula.

Symptoms of VVF: constant leakage of urine from a female’s bladder into her genital include fever, stomach pains, diarrhoea, loss of weight, nausea and vomiting. Some scholars argue that illiteracy, early marriage, poverty, deliveries at home with quacks, in the most, are the latent causes of VVF.

By the way, Nigeria, with between 400,000 and 800,000 victims of this preventable condition has the highest number of victims in the world, with 20,000 added annually. More than 90 per cent of the cases go untreated while the old men, who caused it in the first place, just move on.

You will be right to conclude that victims of VVF practically have no lives and there are almost no hopes of escape from the biological damage to their bodies and the lifelong trauma of the inevitable social stigma that accompanies their condition.

A husband, who perennially lives in Lagos, leaving his young wife for months on end, was compelled to stick by her, whom he had stigmatised because a bottle, that she inserted into her private part in the manner of a sex toy, broke, and caused her material damage.

If those Godly elderly mallams had not insisted that he was responsible for his wife’s action, he would have dumped her. The young wife, who would have been followed all over the place by a male member of her absentee husband’s family would have had no chance of consummating her sexual urge by engaging in adultery.

She resorted to the dangerous alternative of using a bottle as sex toy.
The girl-child in Northern Nigeria is weighed down by the triple tragedy of illiteracy, early marriage and the oppressive patriarchal system that gives no voice to the female. It’s very inconvenient that a significant portion of the population is kept under some kind of slavery in this 21st Century.
A panel of discussants on a radio talk show recently came to the awful conclusion that “Digital generation, Our generation,” the theme of 2021 UNICEF International Day of the Girl, marked on Monday, October 11, 2021, is not realistic for the Nigerian girl-child, who is facing a deluge of social, economic and political encumbrances.
It gets scandalous when you remember that Section 17(3)(f) of Nigeria’s Constitution says “The State (meaning the government) shall direct its policy towards ensuring that children; (and) young persons… are protected against any exploitation whatsoever, and against moral and material neglect.”
Also, Section 18(1) provides that “Government shall direct its policy towards ensuring that there are equal and adequate educational opportunities at all levels.” Section 18(3) adds that “Government shall strive to eradicate illiteracy…”
Unfortunately, the constitution that imposes these grand responsibilities on the government through Chapter II on Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy, also takes them away with the satanic Section (6)6(c):
“The judicial powers vested in (Section 6(1)) on the courts established for the Federation, shall not… extend to any issue or question as to whether any act or omission by any authority… is in conformity with… Chapter II of this Constitution.”
This, in plain English, means that no one can hold any government accountable on Sections 17(3) and 18(3) of the Constitution in a court of law. This ouster clause is like handcuffs made for the elbow and not the wrists.
And that’s why the girl-child, in Northern or Southern Nigeria, is virtually without any protection from the whims and caprices of a system designed to use them for pleasure and then cast them away.
To borrow and rework a counsel given to the media by Prof Ayo Ojebode of the Department of Communication and Language Arts of the University of Ibadan, the North must be intentional in liberating its womenfolk from the systemic shackle. By freeing the Nigerian women, you are freeing Nigeria.
This is no pitch for feminism, but a call to take advantage of Nigeria’s human capital potentials. First Lady Aisha Buhari says, “I would encourage our husbands to support their wives to collectively achieve greater heights.”
The northern political establishment should hold an indaba, take a cue from its own Prof Yusuf Usman, and invest in the girl-child, even if that wasn’t Prof Yusuf’s exact words.

Street Trading Contributes To Environmental Pollution, Says Lagos

The Lagos State Government has said street trading, hawking on drainages and pedestrian bridges contribute to environmental pollution in the state.
The Corps Marshal of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, Gbemisola Akinpelu (retd.), said this in a statement on Tuesday.
She was quoted to have spoken during a presentation at the Department of Sociology, University of Lagos, Akoka.

“Lagos State with a population of over 20 million, due to high influx of people from far and wide, is faced with a perennial problem of trading activities on walkways, road verges, medians, setbacks, drainages, pedestrian bridges and even on the main road, which affect free-flow of human and vehicular movement, thereby compounding the environmental sanitation issue in the state,” she said.
Akinpelu further explained that the efforts of LAGESC to curb indiscriminate street trading have been unsuccessful.

“The agency has been up and doing at ensuring that sanity prevailed in the areas where street trading and hawking have become a daily occurrence in the state. Despite the agency’s efforts through stakeholders’ meetings, advocacy and sensitisation, voluntary compliance has been extremely difficult due to the traditional ways of conducting market activities amongst traders such as displaying and hawking goods on the roadsides despite the designated market places, while the agency’s enforcement protocol has also resulted in arrests and prosecution of recalcitrant traders by the courts,” she said.

The Head of Research, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology, UNILAG, Dr Adebowale Ayobade, said, “I advocate the regulation of street trading through the creation of specific hours of the day and locations where traders can legitimately carry out their activities without constituting an environmental nuisance to the state.”

Champions League: Ziyech Strike Sees Chelsea Beat Malmo

Chelsea moved to the brink of sealing their place in the Champions League last 16, but the defending champions were made to work hard for a 1-0 win over Malmo in Sweden on Tuesday.
Hakim Ziyech broke the home side’s resistence 11 minutes into the second-half as the Moroccan tapped home from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s inch-perfect cross.

Thomas Tuchel’s men moved onto nine points from four games, level with Juventus at the top of the Group H and six clear of third-placed Zenit St Petersburg.
The Italian giants welcome Zenit in Turin later on Tuesday.
Tuchel resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes despite cruising past the Swedish champions 4-0 on home soil two weeks ago.
Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both sustained injuries in the first meeting between the sides.
Chelsea have not missed the firepower of their two first-choice strikers, despite Kai Havertz failing to step up in their absence.
The German, who scored the winning goal in last season’s final against Manchester City, missed the best chance of a cagey first-half dominated by the visitors.
Havertz fired too close to Johan Dahli when one-on-one, while the Malmo ‘keeper was also forced into routine saves by Ziyech, Marcos Alonso and Andreas Christensen.
One moment of quality made the difference for the European champions as Hudson-Odoi and Havertz exchanged a one-two that freed the England winger down the right and his cross perfectly picked out Ziyech to tap home.
More chances came and went for Chelsea in the final quarter, the best of which was wasted by substitute Christian Pulisic in stoppage time.
But they never looked in danger of conceding an equaliser as they registered an eighth clean sheet in 10 Champions League games under Tuchel.

Lagos Shuts Vedic Hospital For ‘Engaging Unlicensed Foreign Doctors, Nurse’

The Lagos State Government through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency has shut Vedic Lifecare Hospital for engaging unlicensed expatriates.
The Executive Secretary of the Lagos agency, Dr. Abiola Idowu, who made the disclosure in her office in Alausa, Ikeja, explained that the hospital located at Plot 6, Olabanji Olajide Street, Lekki, was sealed for engaging expatriate staff who have not been certified to practice locally.

“The facility was shut down for engaging three foreign doctors and a nurse with unverified certificates and without licenses from any professional body,” she explained in a statement obtained on the website of Lagos State Government.
But efforts to reach officials of the hospital proved abortive as their phones rang out.
Also, the website of the hospital was down when our correspondent visited.

Idowu, however, stated that the closure of the hospital does not affect the in-patients already admitted, stressing that the agency is aware that some facilities are engaging Foreign-Based Transient Medical Doctors who come into the State, stay for a period of time to provide medical care to patients and perform medical procedures before returning to their respective countries.

Also speaking, the Chairman, HEFAMAA Governing Board, Dr. Yemisi Solanke-Koya, noted that the practice raises consequential concerns regarding the regulatory oversight of healthcare in the State.

The concerns, according to her, focus on whether the facilities where the FBTMDs provide medical care are registered with and meet the standards required by HEFAMAA; whether the FBTMDs themselves possess the requisite credentials and experience required to practice the designated specialities they travel to the State for and whether the provisions made for the realm of continuity of care of the patients when the FBTMDs leave the State meet the standard of care.
The Chairman warned that hospitals in Lagos should desist from using foreigners whose certificates and licenses have not been verified by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

UCL: Ronaldo Rescues Man United Again, Scores Twice Against Atalanta

Cristiano Ronaldo rode to Manchester United’s rescue late on for the third time in four Champions League matches to salvage a 2-2 draw at Atalanta on Tuesday.
The competition’s all-time top scorer struck a sweet volley from outside the box in the 91st minute to keep United on top of Group F.

However, another disjointed display bailed out by Ronaldo’s brilliant finishing will do little to ease the pressure on coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian bought himself some time from the calls for him to be sacked with a 3-0 win at Tottenham on Saturday.
Solskjaer’s switch to a back three at the weekend resulted in some much-needed defensive solidity.
However, that was just the Red Devils second clean sheet in 22 games and their problems at the back were again easily exposed in Bergamo.
The visitors could have taken an early lead when Scott McTominay’s deflected shot came back off the post.
But the majority of the chances were coming Atalanta’s way and they made the breakthrough on 12 minutes thanks to an error from David de Gea.
The Spaniard has been one of United’s best performers of a desperately disappointing season so far, but he let Josip Ilicic’s shot squirm under his body.
Duvan Zapata had two glorious chances to double the Italians’ lead, but the Colombian firstly fired high and wide before being denied by a brilliant block by Eric Bailly.
United suffered another blow when Raphael Varane was forced off midway through the first-half with what appeared the recurrence of a groin injury.
However, the individual quality in the United squad was in evidence for a brilliant equaliser in first-half stoppage time.
Mason Greenwood played in Bruno Fernandes, who picked out Ronaldo with a backheel for the Portuguese to blast home his eighth goal in 12 games since returning to Old Trafford in August.
But United have only won five of those games as Solskjaer continues to struggle to find the right balance goes on.
The offside flag initially came to United’s rescue when Zapata finally found the net 11 minutes into the second period.
After a review that took over two minutes, the Gewiss Stadium erupted in celebration when the goal was given.
Late Ronaldo winners at home to Villarreal and Atalanta have kept United’s chances of progress alive.
And despite being starved of service for the majority of the second-half, he delivered again in stoppage time.
Greenwood flicked the ball towards the 36-year-old, who arrowed the ball into the bottom corner.
United even had a late chance to snatch all three points when substitute Donny Van de Beek was denied by Juan Musso from a narrow angle.
But they barely deserved the point that keeps them ahead of Villarreal on head-to-head record with both sides locked on seven points.
Atalanta are two points further back with two games remaining.

Anambra Governorship Poll: Obaseki Drums Support For PDP Candidate Ozigbo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, called on Anambra voters to secure the future of the state by voting in the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Dr. Valentine Ozigbo, in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Obaseki gave the charge while addressing party faithful at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State, during the final mega campaign rally of the PDP ahead of the gubernatorial poll.
Obaseki, who was represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, urged the voters to cast their vote for the PDP candidate and his deputy, saying they have the capacity to change the situation of the state.
“He (Governor Obaseki) appeals to all Anambra people, especially women and youths who are the most active in every election to give their support to Dr. Valentine Ozigbo in order to rebuild and restore the lost hope of the people.
“Do not be afraid to come out on Saturday to cast your vote and do not vote for retired politicians who have nothing to offer the people of Anambra State. The man to vote on Saturday is Dr. Ozigbo and the party to vote for is the PDP.”
“Saturday, November 6, 2021, will determine the future of the youths and Anambra State. The PDP candidate is a youth; he will move the state to a greater level where all citizens will benefit,” he noted.
On his part, Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, said the success of the just concluded PDP National Convention is a pointer to the readiness of PDP to rescue Nigeria.
He noted that the election is all about the youths who have a vital role to play in rescuing Anambra State and Nigeria, adding, “Let us all come together in unity, putting aside the bitterness from the primaries, and mobilise youths, men, women and all citizens of the state to cast their votes for PDP.”
Also, Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, said the governorship election is not a choice between good and evil, but a choice of the best candidate for the election, which is Ozigbo of the PDP.
Addressing the party faithful, Ozigbo said, “We are here for our people; we deserve better. We are here for the poor who deserve a better life; for the unemployed who will have a better future; the students who will have better education and for the widows and downtrodden to improve their lives.”

NCC To Engage Stakeholders On 5G Spectrum Auction

The Nigerian Communications Commission plans to engage stakeholders on the Fifth Generation spectrum auction towards the implementation of the 5G network in Nigeria.

The Commission will engage with the relevant industry stakeholders to examine the draft Information Memorandum for the upcoming auction of the 3.5 gigahertz spectrum band.

This was contained in a press statement titled ‘NCC Hosts Stakeholder Engagement on 5G Spectrum Auction’, which was signed by the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde on Tuesday.

The statement read, “As part of activities lined up for the implementation of the 5G Technology Deployment Plan in the country, the NCC is set to host a stakeholder engagement forum this week. The forum will afford industry stakeholders the opportunity to discuss the draft IM for the upcoming auction of the 3.5GHz spectrum band.”
It added, “The decision to host the stakeholder engagement is in keeping with the provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 and NCC’s distinctive tradition of robust stakeholder consultation on all telecom regulation-related issues.”

The NCC had earlier stated that it was 97 per cent ready for the implementation of the 5G network in Nigeria, which should be accomplished by January 2022.

Ikoyi Building Collapse: Families of Trapped Victims Beg To Join Rescue Operations

Adewole and Olusola Odeyinde
The families of those trapped in the rubble of the building that collapsed in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State have begged to join the rescue operations which have entered Day 2.
The PUNCH reported that the 25-storey building collapsed on Monday trapping no fewer than 20 people in the rubble.

Federal and state emergency agencies currently at the site of the collapsed building have managed to rescue nine survivors while the remains of 10 people have been recovered.

The site has been cordoned off by security operatives consisting of soldiers of the Nigerian Army, Police operatives and officers of the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps.
This was done to prevent a crowd from gaining access to the rubble of the collapsed building.
However, 10 men were selected to join the rescue operations from among those claiming to have a loved one trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building.

The women in the crowd could be heard begging to gain access, while others were in a sad mood.
One of them who was heard talking to newsmen lamented that the rescue operations have yielded nothing since it began.
“It’s almost 24 hours, they are not doing anything,” she said.
Her clamour for authorities to allow people to have access to the site was supported by the crowd.
The PUNCH later learnt that the 10 men who were allowed to join the rescue operations were sent out of the site.
When they were approached for comment as to why they were sent out, they said no reason was given to them.

Meanwhile, four more bodies have been recovered from the rubble as of the time of filing this report. They were immediately placed inside a van of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority and taken away to the morgue.

A copy of the statement which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja was titled ‘Joint statement by candidates for the Anambra State governorship election holding on November 6, 2021.’

The candidates expressed appreciation for the appeal and concerns raised by the South East council of Traditional Rulers and the representatives of Igbo bishops and archbishops as regards the anxiety arising from the violence in the South East.

In their resolutions, they said, “We the candidates in the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship Election commit unequivocally to non-violence and the maintenance of peace throughout the duration of the election and beyond.
“We urge all our supporters and other stakeholders to commit fully to these ideals and refrain from any act that may imperil the election.

“In order to eschew all acts that may torpedo the forthcoming election, we urge the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to the South East Council of Traditional Rulers and the representatives of Igbo archbishops and bishops.
“We urge the Federal Government to take urgent steps to demilitarise the South East zone and stem the heightened tension, skirmishes and endless bloodletting between the security agencies and our youths.”
They also called on IPOB to avoid actions that would hinder the smooth running of elections.
“We urge IPOB not to do anything that would hinder or be seen to be hindering the smooth running of the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State and to cancel all scheduled sit-at-home orders, as these have already caused untold hardship for our people.

“We call on the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Armed Forces, other security agencies and all stakeholders to discharge their mandates in accordance with law and in a fair and just manner,” the statement added.

Obi Cubana; DSS DG’s Son Tackles EFCC over Detention

Abba, son of the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the detention of the Chairman of Cubana Group, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the anti-graft agency detained Cubana on Monday for alleged money laundering and tax fraud.
Abba, a footballer and teenage son of the secret police boss, took to his verified Instagram account, abba__bichi, immediately after the detention of Cubana to declare his support for the businessman.
In the post, Abba uploaded a ravishing photo of a smiling Cubana and captioned it, “A man of honour and dignity”, adding that not every wealthy person is fraudulent.

Abba’s post has attracted over 160 comments with some Instagram users accusing him of supporting “yahoo boys”.
A user, @nadiaibrahimismail, wrote, “@abba__bichi you’re not ashamed your father is the DG SSS, a responsible person you’re here supporting yahoo boys
abba__bichi fired back, “Go and prove that okay, not everyone with money is into fraud, you idiots support politicians with money and find it hard to see any good Nigerian with money! Indeed you are an illiterate of the highest order.”

Another user, @bafanabee, tackled Abba, saying he shouldn’t have declared support for Cubana but the DSS DG’s son replied, “If my father is (DSS DG), so what?”
It was not all knocks for Abba as some users also threw their weight behind him.
“@abba__bichi sad. I just weep when I see some comments. It’s painful to read,” Isokenodigie stated.
Abba then retorted, “@isokenodigie they are politicians puppet that’s why! Imagine a sensible person will choose a politician over a hardworking man! That’s why Nigeria is messed up.”
A top EFCC source told our correspondent that the Anambra-born club owner is still being quizzed at the headquarters of the EFCC at Jabi, Abuja, and has not yet been released as of the time of filing this report on Tuesday.

Efforts to reach EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, however, proved abortive as of press time.
Cubana became a social media sensation and the rave of the moment in July after the ‘naira rain’ at the burial of his mother in Oba, a town in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Several videos went viral that show celebrities, businesspeople and politicians spray money indiscriminately during a concert held after the interment of the deceased.

Scores of cows were also reportedly slaughtered at the event which many had described as ostentatious.

Don’t Disrespect Govt, Pastor Kumuyi Tells Christians

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, has stated that Christians should not disrespect those in positions of authority.

Kumuyi stated this on his official Twitter handle on Sunday, noting that it was not responsible for a self-professed Christian to agitate for better conditions when elected officials fail on their campaign promises.

In the Twitter thread, Kumuyi admitted the shortcomings of the government in power.
He said, “At Deeper Christian Life Ministry, we are far more aware of this existential crossroads than many perceive.

We present the Word of God as delivered in the Holy Bible, alright. But we warn that in the long run, the Lord is interested in a fusion of obedience to His Word and relating amicably with fellow human beings, regardless of class, colour, caste (religion) or culture.
“We teach that if you’re a genuine believer in Christ, you wouldn’t hate your neighbour.

Nor would you disdain those in power because they appear not to be delivering on electoral pledges such that you would go on the rampage, destroying government property or pillaging the public till.”

The octagenarian added that it was not the responsibility of Christians to hold those in authority accountable since God created them.
Kumuyi stated that the government was to provide for material needs while the church is meant to care for the inner being.
“We teach a linear life of Christian walk: you can’t be a saint on Sunday and a monster on Monday. Needless to say, God recognizes the dual nature He has clothed us with, physical body and soul.

Both need to be fed proportionally. The inner soul requires the Word, while the external body needs material fulfillments through food, shelter, healing, job, joy, justice etc. The Creator hasn’t annulled that order.
“He expects the state to cater for the body while He saddles the Church with providing for the inner being. None is mutually independent of the other. Societies run into straits, setbacks and storms when they neglect this arrangement,” he added.

Soldiers Invade Enugu Community, Burn Houses, Kill Undisclosed Number Of Youths

Soldiers of the Nigeria Army on Monday invaded Isingwu, a hamlet in Imama Village, Mgbowo in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State and burnt houses with an undisclosed number of youths killed for yet to be identified reasons.
However, some accounts claimed the soldiers were in the community to arrest an alleged leader of the Eastern Security Network, the security arm of Indigenous People of Biafra, who hailed from the community.

A source told our correspondent that the said suspect, known as Chocho, was said to be at large when the military personnel invaded around the community at about 5am and started shooting indiscriminately, burning houses including the family house of the said suspect.
“They torched his house and sprayed bullets in nearby compounds. In short, the soldiers who were chanting jihadist songs were burning properties in the community like they were at war with the community,” one of the sources told our correspondent.
Although an eyewitness, who pleaded not to be named, said there was no casualty during the attack, there are reports that undisclosed number of youths were killed during the invasion.
The source said, “The villagers were surprised at the invasion because there had not been any attack by ESN members in recent time. We have not had any issue with IPOB or its security wing ESN. In short, it is the ESN that stopped herdsmen kidnappings, killings and rape of women in the community and around Awgu council area. Where were the soldiers when the Fulani herdsmen were ruining the community before emergency of the ESN?”
He noted that before the Monday invasion the military had engaged in show of strength, parading the entire town everyday. This development, he said, made the people to live in fear.
However, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders has condemned the gruesome killings of innocent civilians and burning of their houses and properties by soldiers in the South-East describing it as “wicked, villainous and barbaric”.
The group in a statement titled, ‘The Nigeria Military’s murderous excesses in Awgu Local Government of Enugu State, an aberration to the rule of law,’ said the Nigerian military has no constitutional right to move into a civilian community and start shooting, killing and burning community houses, describing it as genocide and such act amount to ethnic cleansing.
The statement which was signed by the group’s President General and Publicity Secretary, Mr Goodluck Ibem and Comrade Okey Nworu respectively, said the burning of community houses or houses said to belong to a suspect or family can only mean one thing, that soldiers were Fulani terrorists executing jihad against Igbo.
The statement partly read, “The Military under the democratic setting is governed by constitutional norms. The Nigerian Constitution being the grand norm, absolutely prohibits the use of extra legal killings of citizens under section 33 (1).
“What on earth will make soldiers who are paid with taxpayers money to invade a civilian community killing anything on sight and burning down houses if not to conquer the territory.
“The plot to Fulanise and Islamise Nigeria is no longer a hinder agenda but an open one now. The Awgu genocide is a clear one for all to see.
The soldiers who came for the mission in Awgu were killing people and speaking Fulani and Hausa language. They were carefully handpicked by their sponsors for the wicked genocide mission.
We are very aware that the plot to annihilate Ndigbo for the Fulanis to take over Igboland is because the South East region are predominantly Christians. It is so sad that such genocide is happening in a supposed democratic administration were the rule of law, right to life and fundamental human rights are meant to be respected by the government.
Awgu is a peaceful and law-abiding community. The community has not been in the news for the wrong reasons. For the Nigerian military to move into a peaceful and and law-abiding community to kill innocent people while abusing those they are killing with Fulani and Hausa language means that there is more than meets the eye. Truly Igboland has been marked for take over by the Fulani using the Nigeria military but they will not succeed.
“We call on the South-East governors who are the Chief Security Officers of their various states to stand up on their feet and defend their states. If they keep quiet believing that they are secured because they have security around them, very soon the Fulani killers will get to them. The time to address and arrest the situation in the bud is now.”
The youth leaders however, called on the United Nations and the international community to immediately come to the aid of the people of South-East who have been marked for annihilation because they are Christians.
“We hereby demand for an independent panel of inquiry into the genocide committed by Nigerian soldiers in Isi-Ngwu community and the massive destruction of houses. The soldiers that carried out the burning and killings must be fished out and tried for committing war crime against the people.”
Meanwhile, efforts to get reaction of the Nigerian Army were unsuccessful as the spokesman of the military, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu could not take his calls or respond to text message at of the time of filing this report.
Also, when contacted on telephone, the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations 82 Division, Major Abubakar Abdullahi, told our correspondent to give him some time, but after several hours, he sent a text saying “please get across to Director Army Public Relations”.

Aston Villa vs West Ham: Hammers Crush 10-Man Villa To Strengthen Top-Four Position

West Ham underlined their Premier League top-four credentials with a 4-1 win against 10-man Aston Villa on Sunday.
Ben Johnson scored early for the visitors only to see Ollie Watkins equalise but the Hammers reclaimed the lead before half-time through Declan Rice.
Villa’s task was made all the harder early in the second half when defender Ezri Konsa was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

Late goals from Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen sealed the three points for David Moyes’ side and condemned Villa to a fourth straight Premier League defeat.
The victory lifts David Moyes’ Hammers to 20 points after 10 games — level on points with third-placed Manchester City.
West Ham drew first blood in the seventh minute when Rice sprayed a pass out to the right flank for Johnson, who cut inside onto his left foot and curled a low shot into the far corner of the net.
Watkins levelled things up in the 34th minute, steering home Emiliano Buendia’s low cross from close range.
But Villa’s delight was shortlived as Rice restored the visitors’ lead with a long-range shot that bobbled its way into the back of the net via a touch off the post just four minutes later.

Villa were reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute when a VAR review ruled that Konsa had denied Bowen a clear goalscoring opportunity by tripping him on the edge of the penalty area. The Villa defender initially only received a yellow card for the foul.

Despite being a man down, the home side came agonisingly close to an equaliser when Lukasz Fabianski got his fingertips to a thumping Watkins header to push it against the bar.

West Ham increased their lead when Fornals finished from a tight angle after goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez could only push Bowen’s shot into his path and Bowen himself added a fourth.
Earlier, Leeds beat Norwich 2-1 to record just their second league win of the season and climb out of the relegation zone.
The sides were locked at 0-0 at Carrow Road at half-time but the game exploded into life in a dramatic four-minute spell after the break.
Leeds forward Raphinha broke the deadlock in the 56th minute only for Andrew Omobamidele to head an equaliser from a corner two minutes later.
But home cheers turned to despair in the 60th minute when Rodrigo’s low left-footed effort found its way underneath Tim Krul.
The win lifts Leeds to 17th in the table, three points clear of the bottom three but Norwich remain winless and are now eight points from safety.

Serie A: Correa Hits Double As Inter Milan Down Udinese 2-0

Joaquin Correa’s slick second-half double earned Inter Milan a 2-0 win over Udinese in Serie A on Sunday to consolidate the defending champions’ hold on third place.
The Argentina international joined Inter on loan from Lazio in August and made an immediate impact, scoring twice on his debut against Verona.

He repeated the feat, after missing three games this season through injury, against Udinese, who reached the interval having survived a seven-shot onslaught from Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella, and a goalmouth scramble.
“Things weren’t going well for me in the first half today, but I never stop trying,” Correa told Sky Sport Italia.
“Now we have to continue along this path, because everyone in the team wants the same thing,” he added.
Correa finally got the breakthrough goal on the hour, running through afer Ivan Perisic’s dummy to sidestep Udinese centre back Bram Nuytinck and shoot inside the near post.
The visitors should have been further behind when Eden Dzeko was allowed a free run with Udinese assuming, mistakenly, he was offside only for goalkeeper Marco Silvestri to save the point-blank shot.
Correa doubled up on the 68th minute, blasting the ball into the roof of the net with Denzel Dumfries providing a neat assist from the right.
Inter held on but only after their keeper and captain Samir Handanovic tipped a shot from Gerard Deulofeu over the bar, with the Spanish forward then having a goal disallowed for offside eight minutes from time.
Simone Inzaghi’s side moved to within four points of leaders Napoli, who are at Salernitana, and AC Milan, who face Roma, later in the day.
Udinese extended their winless run to eight matches.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Serbia attacker Dusan Vlahovic scored a hat-trick to take his goal tally for the season to 10 in 12 games as Fiorentina beat Spezia 3-0.
Genoa and Venezia drew 0-0 while Polish midfielder Szymon Zurkowski opened his account for the campaign with a 92nd minute winner to help Empoli edge Sassuolo 2-1.

Atlético Madrid vs Real Betis: Carrasco Inspires Atletico To Victory

Yannick Carrasco’s blistering strike set Atletico Madrid on the way to a 3-0 victory over Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday, keeping the reigning champions within two points of the leaders.
Belgium’s Carrasco hammered in the opening goal at the Wanda Metropolitano on 26 minutes before Betis defender German Pezzella bizarrely headed a corner into his own net in the second half.

Joao Felix came off the bench to wrap up just a second win in five outings for Atletico, who moved above Betis and stayed in touch with Real Madrid, Sevilla and Real Sociedad, all level on 24 points.
Real Sociedad, who have lost only one of their opening 11 games, host Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao later on Sunday.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak palmed away a powerful early attempt from William Carvalho, but the hosts quickly asserted their dominance as Jose Gimenez and Antoine Griezmann forced stops from Claudio Bravo.
Carrasco made the breakthrough, collecting a pass from Angel Correa and twisting past Martin Montoya before rifling the ball into the roof of the net.
Mario Hermoso saw his header ruled out for offside after half-time in torrential rain, with Stefan Savic nodding straight at Bravo who then saved well from Luis Suarez.
But from the resulting corner Pezzella gifted Atletico a second goal when he badly miscued his attempted clearance.
Betis had won their last three league matches and a victory would move them level at the top, but instead Atletico began a key few days that includes a trip to Liverpool on Wednesday with an assured display.
Felix raced onto a through ball in the final 10 minutes to seal the points and the goal was upheld upon review after initially being disallowed for offside.

Anambra: 76,104 Voters In Five LGAs May Mot Vote, Says YIAGA

Yiaga Africa, an election watch group, has said about 76,104 voters in six Local Government Areas of Anambra State risk disenfranchisement in next Saturday’s governorship election.
The group said voters who got registered during the Continuous Voters Registration in the state amounting to about 76,000 could be disenfranchised because of delay in getting their voter cards from the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Yiaga’s deputy board chairman, Ezinwa Nwagwu, explained that the findings followed the group’s Watch the Vote pre-election observation.
He listed violations of the electoral code of conduct, election violence threats and volatility of the state resulting from the secessionist group, Indigenous Peoples of Biafra’s threat to shut down the region from November 5 as some factors that would adversely affect the poll.

He said, “We commend INEC on its efforts to distribute the Permanent Voter Cards from previous registrations.
“However, Yiaga Africa is worried that, with less than a week to the election, the commission has yet to commence distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards to the 76,104 new eligible voters who recently got registered during the Continuous Voters Registration in the state.

“While there were distributions of PVCs in 16 local government areas, there was no record of distribution of the PVCs in Anambra East, Aguata, Idemili North, Dunukofia and Onitsha South local government areas.
Speaking earlier, Yiaga’s director of programmes, Cynthia Mbamalu, said, “There were also reports of physical attacks during political parties’ campaign rallies in Ihiala and Nnewi local government areas.

Assailants attacked the candidate and supporters of APGA during the party’s rally in Ihiala where one person was shot in the leg.
“Also in Anambra East and Ihiala local government areas, Yiaga Africa’s observers reported ‘excessive use of force and intimidation by security forces (military personnel)’ on the people.”
While commending INEC for ensuring a free, fair and credible poll, Yiaga called for more consistent and harmonious coordination within the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to forestall violence incidences and ensure safety of voters and poll officials.
“As a matter of urgency, INEC should collaborate with Civil Society Organisations, National Orientation Agency and other relevant stakeholders to amplify and intensify voter education and inspire confidence in voters across the state.
“Security agencies should ensure their personnel are adequately trained in election security before they are deployed for the election while deploying monitoring mechanisms to check and curtail personnel excesses.”
