Osun 2022: PDP Postpones Gov Aspirants Screening

The People’s Democratic Party has rescheduled the screening of aspirants for the Osun State Governorship election primary from the earlier scheduled date of Tuesday, January 11, 2022 to a new date of Wednesday, January 12, 2022.

This is according to a statement signed on Saturday by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, titled ‘PDP shifts screening of Osun governorship aspirants to Wednesday, January 12’.
Bature, however, revealed that the venue for the screening exercise remains PDP National Secretariat, Abuja at 10:00 am prompt.
“The PDP regrets any inconveniences the change in date may have caused. All aspirants, leaders, critical stakeholders and members of our party in Osun state should take note and by this, be guided accordingly,” the statement read.

2023: PDP Has Not Zoned Presidential Ticket – Spokesman

The Peoples Democratic Party says it has not zoned its 2023 presidential ticket to any part of the country.
The National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made this known in a statement on Saturday titled, ‘2023: We Have Not Zoned Our Presidential Ticket -PDP’.

A former member of the PDP who decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2021, Femi Fani-Kayode, had on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Friday alleged that the PDP already zoned the party’s presidential ticket to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
However, reacting in its statement, the PDP said, “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party has been drawn to comments and speculations from certain individuals claiming that our Party has zoned its Presidential ticket to a particular part of the country.
“This is completely misleading as it does not in any way represent the position of our Party.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP emphatically and unequivocally states that it has not zoned it Presidential ticket to any part of the country.
“The PDP is a political party founded on democratic principles and every action of the Party, including zoning, is based on extensive consultations, discussions and consideration of all the issues as well as the various tendencies and interests across the nation, with the main objective of ensuring that the unity, peaceful co-existence and development of our nation are reinforced and promoted.
“The PDP therefore urges Nigerians, our teeming members and supporters to completely disregard the unfounded zoning claims as being peddled. Our Party also cautions those behind the claims to desist forthwith.
“The PDP thanks Nigerians across board for the overwhelming interest they have in our Party as their sure platform to Rescue and Rebuild our nation from misrule and urges them to remain united and focused as we join forces for the task ahead.”

Ramaphosa Warns Against Destabilisation As ANC Marks 110 Years

South Africa’s ruling ANC marked its 110th anniversary Saturday in low-key fashion as the country reels from the devastating fire in parliament, last year’s deadly riots and emerging details of corruption.

In the stands of a stadium in Polokwane, in northern Limpopo province, a few hundred party members sporting the African National Congress signature yellow, green and black dotted the terraces.
It was a far cry from the noisy and large crowds of supporters traditionally bused in for the annual festivities, thanks to Covid-19 restrictions limiting outdoor gatherings to just 2,000 people.
And the speech from President Cyril Ramaphosa, in which he referred to acts that had had “the effect of subverting our constitutional democracy”, further dampened the party atmosphere.
“These acts include blatant acts of state (corruption) and criminality… the concerted campaign of public violence and destruction that took place in July last year, as well as ongoing theft, destruction and obstruction of infrastructure,” Ramaphosa told party loyalists.
“This anniversary takes place just a few days after a devastating fire swept through our parliament in Cape Town.
“The entire country has been shocked, outraged and saddened by the destruction because the institution of parliament is a repository of our democracy — and symbol of democratic stability of our people,” Ramaphosa said.
His government was, he said, “reforming our law enforcement agencies, our security sector, so that it’s better positioned to defend the gains of our democracy”.
– Corruption report –
The state suffered other setbacks over the past year.
The state security agency was roundly criticised after police stood by watching when the jailing of Ramaphosa’s predecessor Jacob Zuma sparked an orgy of rioting and looting in July that claimed more than 300 lives.
Zuma was sent to prison for refusing to cooperate with corruption investigators.
The party of Nelson Mandela, which led the liberation of South Africa from the shackles of white-minority apartheid rule, has been weakened by historically poor electoral showings, factionalism and corruption.
On Tuesday, Ramaphosa received a report of more than 800 pages containing nearly four years of testimonies collected by a judicial panel on corruption.
Its authors accuse the ANC of having turned a blind eye to graft in state-owned companies that play a significant role in the South African economy.
Many of the plundered state companies were headed by CEOs whose appointments had been approved by the ANC.
The party had been guilty of ignoring “acts of indiscipline”, he said.
“Those who are guilty of corruption, ill-discipline, factionalism and undermining our democracy find no home” in the ANC, said Ramaphosa.
He hoped the investigators’ recommendations “can help to enhance the fundamental renewal and rebuilding” of the ANC.
– ‘ANC is bleeding’ –
In last November’s local elections, most registered voters did not bother to cast votes, and the ANC’s support at the ballot box fell below 50 per cent for the first time ever.
Now party officials are haunted by the possibility of an outright defeat in the 2024 general election.
“The ANC is bleeding,” said party supporter Themba Ubisi, 40, after the celebrations. “Either we renew the party or we perish.”
Other supporters were more optimistic.
“The party is self-correcting,” said 45-year-old Khathu Mathoho. “There’s a will to do things differently, but (some) elements are resisting change.”
Ramaphosa vowed the party would be renewed. “Let us cleanse the ANC,” he said.
One of the half-a-dozen clergymen who offered prayers, prayed for the ANC to make South Africa “great again”.
But adding to their problems, the party’s finances are in shambles.
One political source confirmed that the ANC was indeed “broke” and that in addition to unpaid taxes, the party had a deficit of at least 400 million rand ($26 million, 22.6 million euros).
However, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola insisted to AFP that the party’s finances were “stable”.
In what was a wide-ranging speech Ramaphosa also tacked the issue of vaccine hesitancy, renewing his call for people to be inoculated against Covid to enable the recovery of the pandemic-battered economy.
“The ANC urges government to finalise a policy on the introduction of vaccine mandates for particular settings and activities,” he said.

AFCON: Burkina Faso Coach, Four Players Test Positive For COVID-19

Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore has deplored as “a scandal” coronavirus testing procedures at the Africa Cup of Nations after up to five players and coach Kamou Malo tested positive in the run-up to Sunday’s opener against hosts Cameroon.

The Aston Villa forward told a press conference in Yaounde on Saturday, “It’s a scandal, we cannot be deprived of first-team players 24 hours before the match.”
Assistant coach Firmin Sanou, standing in for Malo, said, “We have four or five Covid cases, mainly first team players, we’re not going to name names.”
“It calls everything into question, but we have confidence in the players who will replace them,” continued Sanou, who hit out at the organisation with two different medical teams arriving to test the team.
“Yesterday morning (Friday) a medical team showed up at our hotel for tests, when we tried to understand who had sent them, the CAF (African Football Confederation) clearly told us that they hadn’t sent them so we refused to do the tests,” said Sanou.
“Another team arrived at 10 p.m., apparently the CAF team, we carried out the tests which informed us of 4 to 5 cases of Covid.
“I say 4 or 5 because they say that our first player tested did not carry out the test … ” he continued.
The Burkinabè delegation are disputing the fact that the tests were not PCR tests, which must be carried out 48 hours before the match, and have requested a second opinion.
Traore said, “The authorities must review the organisation. We cannot accept this decision. We can redo tests of our positive players.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lafia.

Edafe said that the suspect was nabbed on Friday by the command’s Dragon Patrol Team while on a stop and search duty on the Warri/Sapele Road.

“The occupant immediately took to his heels and ran into the bush while the driver was arrested.
“While searching the vehicle, a phone number was found inside and during the course of investigation, the owner of the vehicle was contacted through the phone number.”

Nnamdi Kanu: Political Solution Still Being Pursued, Says Ekweremadu

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said a political solution is still being pursued concerning the case of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The IPOB leader, who is facing charges bordering on terrorism and treason, is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services.
Some Igbo leaders had last year visited the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the State House in Abuja to seek Kanu’s release. This is amidst calls for a political solution to Kanu’s case.
During the visit, Buhari told them that an unconditional release of the IPOB leader runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the Executive and Judiciary.
This is as he stated in a recent interview with Channels Television that Kanu should defend himself in court for peddling false information about his regime while he was overseas.
Reacting, Ekweremadu, in an interview with Dream FM, Enugu, said he doesn’t think Buhari ruled out a political solution to Kanu’s case.
The Senator said, “Political solution in the Nnamdi Kanu’s matter is still very feasible. I also watched the Channels Television interview and I don’t think Mr. President ruled out a political solution. In fact, I would have been surprised if he said he would just release Nnamdi Kanu because there is independence of every arm of government, including the judiciary. There are procedures.
“I recall that it was exactly Mr President’s response when I led a delegation of the South-East Caucus of the Senate to see him on the Nnamdi Kanu issue in November 2016. But ultimately we kept reaching out and dialoguing until we had a political solution, which resulted in the judiciary granting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu a bail because ultimately, everything will come to the judiciary because every arm of government is independent.
“So, we will keep working on a political solution, nevertheless. We will keep engaging the government, just as we will continue to appeal to our youth and people to ensure the stability and prosperity of our region.”
He said a feedback is being expected from government concerning the political solution being pursued.
“In line with the political solution, which the South East Caucus of the National Assembly is quitely pursuing, I led a delegation of some Igbo leaders like the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Secretary-General, Amb. Okey Emuchay; and Bishop of the Methodist Church of Nigeria and Co-Chair Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace,
Bishop Sunday Onuoha.
“As usual, I deliberately didn’t want to make it public because it is a quiet service we are rendering to Ndigbo and the nation. But the DSS eventually made it public in one of their statements. So, to answer your question, yes, I did lead a delegation to interface with the Kanu and the authorities. We had useful conversations. We have equally made some requests and we are waiting for a feedback from the government to make progress,” he said.

Naomi Osaka Pulls Out Of Australian Open Warm-Up

Naomi Osaka pulled out of a warm-up tournament for the Australian Open Saturday, saying her “body got a shock” after playing her first matches for four months, opening the Melbourne Summer Set title door to Simona Halep.

Osaka, the reigning Australian Open champion, hit the court this week for the first time since her tearful early exit at the US Open, after which she took a long break to deal with personal matters.
In Melbourne, she played three matches in quick succession and they took a toll. She withdrew before the start of her semi-final on Rod Laver Arena against Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
“Unfortunately I have an abdominal injury which I need to rest and prepare for the #AusOpen,” the Japanese superstar and top seed said in a statement released by the Australian Open on Twitter.
Osaka, who has fallen to 13 in the rankings, added on her own Twitter feed that it had been a tough return and she didn’t want to push too hard with the opening Grand Slam of the year starting on January 17.
“Sad to withdraw due to injury from my match today, my body got a shock from playing back to back intense matches after the break I took,” she said.
“Thank you for all the love this past week I’ll try to rest up and I’ll see you soon.”
The four-time Grand Slam champion had beaten France’s 61st-ranked veteran Alize Cornet 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in her first match back on Tuesday.
She then demolished Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska 6-1, 6-1 before blasting past Germany’s Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 7-5 to make the semi-finals.
Her withdrawal sent Kudermetova into the final with a walkover where she will meet Halep, who crushed Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2.
The win ensured the Romanian, whose season was plagued by injury last year, reached a WTA singles final for the 13th straight season.
– Positive –
“I’m really happy that I can play the final for the first tournament of the year. I’m feeling good, and I’m happy with the way I played,” said the two-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one.
“Last year definitely was the worst year that I ever had. The toughest mentally also.
“But I want to forget about that. I just want to get the feeling from now. I am positive. I am feeling fit on court. I’m moving well. I’m playing good.”
Halep missed Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the Olympics last year with a calf injury and ended her season early due to a knee issue, which culminated in her ranking slumping to 20.
There are two simultaneous WTA events being run as part of the Melbourne Summer Set in the lead-up to this month’s Australian Open.
In the other tournament, American Amanda Anisimova swept past 26th-ranked Russian Daria Kasatkina to zero in on her second WTA title, racing through the semi-final 6-2, 6-0.
The 56-minute thrashing at Rod Laver Arena set up a final against Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who beat American young gun Ann Li 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3.
Anisimova, 20, had lost her last 14 matches against top-30 players, but was too hot for third seed Kasatkina, converting seven of 11 break points while dominating on her serve.

Buhari Should Return Cooking Gas Price To How He Met It In 2015 –HURIWA

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to return the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas popularly called cooking gas to how he met it in May 2015 when he assumed office.

National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, made this known in a chat with The PUNCH on Saturday.
According to Onwubiko, Nigerians have nothing to jubilate or rejoice over about the recent marginal drop in the cost of cooking gas.
According to PUNCH findings, the price of 12.5kg LPG has dropped from N8,800 to between N8400 and N8200. In some outlets, the price of the commodity dropped to between N7,800 and N8,000 as of Thursday.
The product had increased by 240 per cent for 12.5kg, moving up from N3,000 to N10,200 within the first 10 months of 2021.
The development forced some LPG users to shift to charcoal or firewood, as consumers of the commodity raised the alarm over the persistent hike in its price.
The Programme Manager, National LPG Expansion Implementation Plan, Office of the Vice President, Dayo Adeshina, had said the Federal Government was putting measures in place to ensure further reduction in the cost of cooking gas.
However, in a chat with our correspondent on Saturday, the HURIWA coordinator said the marginal reduction (less than N1,000) in the price of cooking gas is not substantial.
Onwubiko said, “The failure of the relevant governmental bodies to regulate the pricing of gas assets in Nigeria is a recipe for encouraging the ballooning poverty situations that we have witnessed since 2015 that President Muhammadu Buhari has operated economic policy frameworks devoid of progressive mechanisms.
“Government lacks the requisite political will, sincerity of purpose and commitments to do the needful to ensure that millions of homes in Nigeria are not subjected to economic ordeals just so they can get gas to power the preparations of their foods and other essential services domestically and otherwise.
“High costs of gas has led to the closure of many restaurants and small businesses thereby increasing unemployment rates in Nigeria. The high cost of gas has affected the green environment and this shows that this government is hypocritical when it mouths her readiness to take remedial steps to halt the consequences of climate change.
“All those international trips costing the taxpayers billions of naira by the President and retinue of ministers to attend climate change-related global summits without taking local steps to check unaffordable costs of gas resources in Nigeria is cosmetic and hypocritical.”
When asked whether it would be better for Buhari to return the price of cooking gas to what it was in 2015, Onwubiko said, “Yes, but this government is unrepentantly incompetent.”
“The government derives satisfaction in imposing outrageous and satanic economic policies on Nigerians. This is even why the government has decided to tax us more for drinking soft drinks even when wives of politically exposed officials buy champagnes and expensive wines at public costs for their own enjoyment in their cocoons,” he added.

Bobrisky Apologises For Asking Oba Of Benin To Marry Him

Popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, fondly known as Bobrisky, has tendered a public apology for asking the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, to “come and marry” him.

He made the comment in a video he shared to express his excitement at being in Benin for an event by celebrity interior designer, Ehi Ogbebor.
In the earlier video, Bobrisky had said, “We’re here to disturb Benin. Oba of Benin, Bob has entered. I have entered. Come and marry me.”
However, after getting slammed by Benin indigenes for calling out their traditional head, Bobrisky has tendered a public apology.
He shared the apology on his Instagram story, where he noted that he was just joking when he made the comment.
In his apology, Bobrisky said, “Earlier today, I made a statement about the Oba of Benin and a lot of you didn’t find it funny.
“I know. I’m so sorry. I’m actually a jovial person and I play a lot. I’m here to apologise to the great Oba of Benin and to the palace of Benin, that I am sorry.”

New Year Celebrations Unjust, Undemocratic To Muslims, Says MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern has stated that the New Year celebrations according to the Gregorian calendar are “unfair, unjust and undemocratic” to Muslims in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by MURIC Director, Prof Ishaq Akintola, the group urged the Federal Government to declare the 1st of Muharram Hijrah, which is the first day in the Islamic calendar, as a public holiday to favour Muslims.
Akintola stated that the regime of the President, Major Gen, Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), supported “the Christianisation of Nigeria” by giving more regard to the Christian celebration while casting the Islamic one aside.
The statement read in part, “As usual, the Federal Government (FG) declared 1st January 2022, a public holiday in recognition of the first day of the Christian Gregorian calendar.
“But because the day fell on a Saturday, FG created an alternative by declaring the following Monday a public holiday.
“This was an aberration and a gross injustice because Nigerian Muslims have been demanding the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar as a holiday for more than 20 years to no avail.
“It simply means that FG under President Muhammadu Buhari is also supporting the Christianisation of Nigeria. It considers the first day of the Christian calendar as sacred while the first day of the Islamic calendar is regarded as unimportant.
“MURIC frowns at this lopsided arrangement. It is unfair, unjust and undemocratic. We demand an immediate review of FG’s holiday policy.
“We demand the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar as a holiday to justify the 1st January holiday that is declared annually by FG.”
MURIC stated that if the Federal Government fails to properly recognise the first day of the Muslim calendar as it has recognised the Christian calendar, it should stop declaring New Year holidays.
According to Akitonla, the government’s failure to declare the Hijrah holiday is modern-day slavery which Muslims have been suffering since the colonial era.
“1st January holiday is a Christian colonial creation designed to dignify and rubber-cushion the pomp and pageantry of Christmas. In the interest of peace, FG should review this Christian colonial heritage.
“Nigeria became independent 62 years ago for crying out loud. 62 years is long enough to right wrongs perpetrated by the British slavemasters.
“Democracy is fraudulent without equal participation, equal rights and justice. We demand parity now and only the recognition of the first day of the Islamic new year can balance the equilibrium and ensure parity, justice and fair play.
“Holidays are part of the dividends of democracy. However, the dividends must not be dished out in a selective manner.
“What explanation does FG have for giving Christians holiday on the first day of their calendar while Muslims are denied same? What right has FG to allow one faith to enjoy a holiday on the first day of its calendar while the other creed is forced to go to work on its own first day? It is modern-day slavery, no more, no less.
“To strike a balance, we demand the declaration of 1st Muharram as a holiday for the Muslim Hijrah calendar. In the alternative or if the government thinks this demand is unreasonable, FG should stop declaring 1st January as a holiday. That is when we will know who has been benefitting from it and who has been losing and hurting,” Akintola stated.

Soot: Rivers Monarchs Seek South-South Govs Intervention

Task FG on modular refineries license
The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has called on the Federal Government to issue modular refinery licenses to operators of illegal refineries to engage in lawful and controlled production of fuel.

This is as they decried the high incidence of soot in Rivers State, which they said has enveloped the atmosphere in Port Harcourt and other parts of the state.
The traditional rulers appealed to the governor of the South-South geopolitical zone to intervene and save the Niger Delta from the soot which according to them was gradually taking over the region.
Chairman of the council and King of Opobo Kingdom, Dandeson Jaja, made the call in a statement in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Jaja said rather than the continued pollution of the environment caused by the soot, the controlled production of fuel will serve the people and keep the environment clean.
The monarch expressed unhappiness that the life expectancy of present and future generations in the state was dangerously being undermined due to the lingering situation of the soot.
According to the first-class monarch, “This form of pollution is suspected to be responsible for an increase in health hazards such as bronchitis, asthma, lung cancer and heart attacks which are prevalent in the state and Niger Delta region due to the activities of illegal refiners.
“On behalf of Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, I call on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, issue modular refinery licenses to operators of illegal refineries to engage in lawful and controlled production of fuel to serve the people and keep our environment clean,” Jaja stated.
The Rivers monarchs’ boss further called on the apex government to promulgate a law banning illegal refineries to protect lives and prescribe punishment for perpetrators.
King Jaja, appealed to the Federal Government to direct the release of enough funds from the ecological fund and also empower other environmental agencies to combat this health hazard in the state.
He frowns on a situation where boats and tanker loads of illegal petroleum products are set ablaze by security agencies in the open thereby worsening the level of soot instead of disposing of it in a way that would not pollute the environment.
“On behalf of the council, I implore the Governors of the South-South geopolitical zone, led by their Chairman, the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, to take up this issue as a matter of urgency with the Federal Government as soot pollution is gradually enveloping the whole of the region,” Jaja added.

APC Convention: Governors To Decide Date On Sunday

On Sunday, January 9, the All Progressives Congress will meet to decide a substantive date for the party’s national convention.

This is partly in response to the caution by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in an interview which aired on the Nigerian Television Authority on Thursday.
In the interview, Buhari warned that by dilly-dallying, the APC may be setting itself up for defeat by the opposition, PDP.
The Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, who met with the President at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, on Friday, said Buhari’s caution is a wake-up call for the party to have a seamless convention to avoid disintegrating.
Lalong who spoke with State House Correspondents said Sunday’s meeting will harp on the proposed date for the convention.
He said the APC governors have now assured the President that the convention will hold in February.
According to him, the party will redouble its effort and do the right thing.
While noting that the APC is a hodgepodge, the Plateau State Governor said what matters is that the Party elects its representatives at the end of the day.
Quizzed about ongoing efforts by APC leaders to avert losses in 2023, Lalong said, “Thank you for that question. Yes, I agree that all the times there are meetings, especially taking final decisions on the party, I’m always part of it and part of it was also why I visited the President and the President still stands committed that there must be an immediate convention.
“You know, when a convention is coming, there are fears here and there, some people will tell you it will work, it will not work. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but the visit to the President has already assured us and you know that there is already a notice that all the governors are meeting on Sunday. By Sunday, we will tell you when we are doing the convention.
“We’ve taken a date already. Before Christmas, we said we’re going to do the convention in February and we are still working towards that, as far as I’m concerned. Except things change from another angle. But as far as I’m concerned, we’re working for our convention in February.”
The Governor explained that despite the concerns the President raised, the governor’s are determined that nothing will stop them from holding a peaceful election.
“Some parties have done their own, the PDP did its own, nothing will stop APC from doing its own.
“So, all the fears that we’re talking about, which the President also re-echoed, are also telling the governors to please do more and keep the party alive. So, by God’s grace, we’re going to put our party alive,” he said.
The Forum’s Chairman added that steps will be taken to address all the issues affecting the conduct of the convention.
“Well, these are things we’re going to discuss, but I’m not drawing a conclusion. But I always tell you that a political party is a cumulation of interests. The interests may be the same, they may not be the same, but at the end of the day, what we’ll do is that we are going to elect people who are going to represent you.
“People will come with different interests and so when you are preparing like this, you have different interests and those different interests will be aired in different ways.
“But I just want to assure you that when we meet, we’ll harmonise all interests and come out as one APC. That’s what we’re hoping for.
“Whatever will be the interests that we’re going to discuss, I have great hope that at the end of the day, our goal is to elect people who will take care of our party, because that will be the beginning of the process towards electing those who will take over from this present government.”
On whether the APC can influence the withdrawal of ongoing court cases against the convention, Lalong affirmed that the legal tussle may be nothing of consequence.
According to him, “There are procedures for holding court processes. Many of the court processes were there when we set up the caretaker committee, but up to this moment, if you go to take a census of some of the court proceedings, you will realise that a lot of them have been resolved out of court. So, it’s still the duty and functions of the party to resolve such issues.
“But we must not wait to resolve all court cases before going for the convention. I don’t think so because there are also ways to resolve court processes, even after convention.
“I had a court process in my state, that did not stop me from going on and at the end of the day, we resolved the court process and we’re still going on, preparing and waiting for convention.”
On whether the APC can meet the speculated February 5 date for the convention in view of the need for mandatory 21-day notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Lalong stated: “Well, I’m not the chairman of the convention committee, but I want to assure you that we’ve called a meeting for Sunday and if there is a meeting on Sunday, and you’re thinking about next Friday. Just wait and see what will happen before next Friday. I don’t want to draw conclusions now.
“You’re already talking of litigation, you draw conclusions, somebody will go and file a case tomorrow. So, I don’t want us to draw a conclusion on that. But I want to assure you that we are meeting. We already sampled the minds of many of the governors.
“We’re meeting and we’re very hopeful that we’re going to consider the admonition given by the President, it’s a warning signal to all of us to sit up and ensure that we have a seamless, very clean, fair and transparent convention so that our party will not get disintegrated.”
The Plateau governor also spoke on the security situation in his state, expressing delight that the military will now be able to deploy Tucano jets against terrorists following their recent re-categorisation.
He lamented that kidnapping has become more prominent in Plateau State.
“Well, in terms of security, some of the issues we raised with the President last year, we’re already beginning to see progress. You’ll recall that we mentioned that we are very eager to see the use of the Tucano jets so that we can have massive engagement with all the bandits.
“Part of it was also the status of some of these bandits around and you can see that already the federal government has described them as terrorists, the military is now going to do full engagement. These were some of the issues that were raised in our communique in Kaduna.
“So, we’re already beginning to see and we’re also getting prepared in the north for such action, that’s what we’re expecting. Let us do massive action that will ensure that within the first quarter of this year, people will have hope that we’re going to live peacefully in all the parts of the north because we’re expecting these actions before the next rainy season,” he said.
Lalong said as an agrarian region, the Plateau State government wants its citizens to be able to access their farm as insecurity has kept them away.
“These are some of the issues that we’re meeting and preparing for.
“The last part of it is the engagement of traditional rulers. Of course, we’ve sent a bill to the National Assembly on the role of traditional rulers and we’re hoping that we’ll pursue that on behalf of Northern governors to ensure that this bill gets through so that traditional rulers will also complement the efforts of the government in addressing insecurity in their various states,” he said.

Bauchi Sues Dogara, 28 Others Over Gonto Memorial Crisis

The Bauchi State Government has filed a suit at the Bauchi High Court against a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and 28 others over the crisis that marred the botched 21st memorial anniversary of a late leader and crusader of the Sayawa people of Bogoro and Tafawa Balewa Local

Government Areas of the state, Peter Gonto.
In the suit with number: BA/01/22 and dated 4th January, 2022, the state government is charging Dogara and the 28 other defendants 11 charges.
Among the charges, Dogara and the others are accused of conspiring to cause bodily harm to people in the area in order to frustrate the progress of the memorial anniversary.
The counts read in part, “On or about the 29th, 30 and/or 31st day of December, 2021 agreed to do or cause to be done an illegal act to wit: you conspired amongst yourselves and others at large to incite the Youths of Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Towns to disturb public peace by burning people’s houses, blocking access roads, physically attacking invited guests and other participants attending the 21st Year Memorial Anniversary and Book Launch of Late Baba Peter Gonto at Bogoro Town, destroy and burn all facilities provided for the occasion, thereby commit offence contrary to Section 96 and punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Law of Bauchi State.”
The PUNCH had reported that the 21st memorial anniversary and book launch later turned violent on Friday, December 31st, 2021.
Gonto, who was the first Christian convert in Sayawa land, later became an evangelist and leader of his people.
The event has caused sharp division among the Sayawa people in the two LGAs with several groups coming out to support the event while others on the other hand, including Dogara kicked against the event citing security concerns.
Dogara, who represents Dass/Tafawa Balewa/Bogoro Constituency in the House of Representatives and is in his fourth term, then wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, informing him of security threats if the event is allowed to hold.
But despite the warning, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Umar Sanda, gave approval for the event to hold just as he ordered the full deployment of police tactical teams to provide security to lives and properties before, during and after the memorial anniversary and book launch of the grandfather of Dogara’s wife.
Ten houses were later confirmed by the police as having been burnt during the crisis. The convoys of the Emirs of Bauchi, Rilwan Adamu and that of Dass, Biliyaminu Othman, who were on their way to the event were attacked and had to turn back to Bauchi with some vehicles in their convoys damaged.

Yellow Card Resumes Naira Deposits, Withdrawals In Nigeria

Globally, 2021 proved to be a significant year for cryptocurrencies. And while some played it safe, Africa’s leading crypto exchange Yellow Card Financial achieved significant milestones which included: setting up the YC Academy, launching in new African territories and raising a Series A of $15M. Now, starting the year off strong, Yellow Card is proud to announce their relaunch into Nigeria.

This relaunch is significant as Nigeria was the first African country where Yellow Card was set up, in 2018. Since then the company has solidified its presence in 14 countries, making significant strides to make cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT Stablecoin accessible to anyone anywhere across the continent.
Oparinde Babatunde, Yellow Card Director of Operations, says this moment is a game changer for the company.
“Nigeria has always been our largest market, and us coming back to reclaim our market share is a big deal for me. There’s so much that existing and new customers can expect: our app looks different and is a whole new experience for users. We also have a strong focus on usability, trust and safety, having implemented Smile Identity to ensure the tier 1 traders are only able to submit documents once and they are scanned with an international db,” he said.
Yellow Card’s initial withdrawal from Nigeria came in February 2022 When the cryptocurrency industry came under regulatory scrutiny around concerns to protect user interest.
“The tide has changed and we are now seeing a growing interest from the CBN in them creating their own digital currency. Around October last year, they announced the release of the eNaira which is a digital form of the country’s currency and draws its value from the physical naira. In the coming months, we hope the CBN will reconsider their stance on cryptocurrency,” added Oparinde.
At the time of the withdrawal Yellow Card boasted an estimated 90k users in Nigeria – a majority of these users included technologically savvy youth and people who wanted to explore innovative investment and retirement options. The team has now set their sights on achieving 500k users in the country by the end of the first quarter of 2022.
Crypto adoption across the continent is growing at record numbers. Earlier this year the Global Crypto Adoption Index cited South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria among the top 20 countries with the fastest growth.
Oparinde says the reason for the increased interest can be attributed to the fact that “a lot of Africans use crypto to hedge against inflation as most African currencies continue to lose their value against the US dollar. Crypto also tends to be a faster and cheaper means of cross border payment so people prefer it as an option opposed to the traditional fiat monetary system”.
As interest in crypto is on the rise, educating Africans on the market remains one of Yellow Card’s key mandates, and they have managed to successfully execute this through various initiatives, webinars and platforms. One such platform is the Yellow Card Academy which boasts a wide range of information about cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, and financial literacy.
Having been in the market before Yellow Card does not negate the challenges that may arise, including government policies that clamp down on cryptocurrency entities and individuals dealing with crypto. Despite this, there’s no denying that the speed at which Africans are adopting crypto is too fast to contain.
Crypto gives people a sense of freedom,” says Oparinde. “As humans we love freedom and naturally tilt towards anything that projects that”.
There’s no doubt that 2022 will be another significant year for cryptocurrencies as people want to be part of this new emerging market. So while you’re putting together your New Year’s resolutions, why not invest, trade, buy or sell crypto on Yellow Card at the best rates. Sign-up to Yellow Card today.

Imo: A Naming Ceremony That Never Held

By Henry Ekpe

In December 2020, as Imo citizens were preparing for a blissful Christmas celebration, “Unknown Invaders” stormed Imo State capital Owerri, and wreaked havoc.

The Bandits ravaged the State Police Headquarters in Owerri, and literally sacked the Prison Yard and its inmates.

By the time the criminals were gone, the State Police Headquarters at Shell Camp, opposite the Government House, the Official residence of the Governor, was in flames.

The Hoodlums burnt vehicles, Offices and other important facilities in the premises.

At the Correctional Centre (Prison Yard) which shares the same vicinity with the Police Headquarter, the Invading Forces released scores of inmates, including those awaiting trials.

Imo State quaked; Owerri was in turmoil and residents rather than celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in peace were in mourning, gripped with fear and apprehension over the roiling situation.

As the Authorities woke up after the carnage, it was discovered that despite the massive devastation and destruction wrought on both Federal Government Establishments, not even one life was lost.

Not even from the dare-devil criminals.

The question on the mouth of Imo citizens became “Who dunn it?”

The Government of Imo State led by Governor Hope Uzodinma was quick to respond that it could have been the outlawed IPOB that carried out the brigandage.

Suddenly later, the Government recanted, now saying that it was Opposition elements that committed the dastardly act.

Federal Authorities after, sent the then Inspector General of Police, and the Minister of Interior, who all pointed accusing fingers at the proscribed IPOB.
Days after, the IG was mysteriously relieved of his duties after the Imo visit.

Maybe to calm frayed nerves and assuage the curiosity of Imo citizens who were disturbed , the Governor promised to set up a Committee to Investigate the chaos and assured to mention names of those behind the mayhem.

Unfortunately, since then, Imo State known as one of the most peaceful and accommodating States in Nigeria has been living on a cliff hanger of insecurity.

As Government battles the menace, the criminals adopted various methods to keep Imo citizens living in fear. They were baptized “Unknown Gunmen” after, which stuck till date.

Government soon improved in its resistance of the Bandits and was able to neutralize most of them that usually carried out frontal attacks on the State capital in broad day light.

As these confrontations and repelling raged , lives obviously were lost, until Imo Government completely shut the criminals out of the State capital Owerri.

Rather than run with their tails between their legs, the criminals moved to the hinter lands where they target soft spots and unleashed violence on innocent citizens.

At a point, they Bandits resorted to barbaric act of beheading people and placing their heads on tables in market squares.

This was the situation as the heinous acts remained more critical in Orlu zone, sparingly in Okigwe zone, with relative peace in Owerri zone.

It was under this ugly scenario that the Governor promised to “open up” and name those behind this mad and ugly development
so that the Devil could be shamed.

Governor Uzodinma fixed the date of the “Naming ceremony” for January 4, 2022, at the annual Stake Holders Meeting, where Imo Governors address all the sectors in the State, devoid of Political leanings.

This year’s Stake Holders meeting generated a lot of Interest, as so many people, even Imo sons and daughters in Diaspora headed home to participate in the “Naming ceremony” exercise. Those at home who were not invited glued their eyes to various Media platforms to be fed with the outcome.

There was really tension in Imo State, as many politicians wondered what could be the outcome.

Would the Governor use the Forum to name his political detractors, so that they be silenced for good?

Would the Governor be sincere enough to really tell Imo people those backing and funding the Hoodlums wreaking havoc in Imo State?

What will happen after naming these sponsors? Has the Governor the right to name openly these alleged sponsors or is it the duty of Security Agencies?

How many Governors in Nigeria have come out to name some of her citizens as perpetrators of insecurity? Even Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Kebbi and other States where the issue of insecurity had assumed a more dangerous dimension are yet to take the IMO route?

Why would Uzodinma mention names, even when the Federal Government has been foot dragging in mentioning those sponsoring violence across Nigeria?

These and many other questions dominated Imo environment, as the D-day approached.

But unfortunately, before the “Naming Ceremony” arrived, a big incident that shook Imo State occurred.

Chief Uche Nwosu, the Governorship candidate of Action Alliance AA, in Imo State 2019 Governorship election was abducted in a church, thrown into a vehicle and was later found in Abuja, the Federal Capital.

This particular incident threw Imo State into apprehension at the peak of Christmas celebrations.

However, the situation was later officially defined when police authorities in Imo State said it was not abduction, but arrest. That they know about the Eziama Obaire,Nkwerre Incident.

But before the Uche Nwosu saga, the Security Operatives in the State had made a major break through as it stormed a criminal Den in Orsu LGA, where decaying human bodies, fresh ones, and even dried ones were discovered.

After the Police raided successfully, the hide out, it said some of the captured barbarians made useful information available about those sponsoring them.

Since then, the Imo State Government, Uche Nwosu, and his Father-Inlaw, a former Governor of Imo State, and now Senator Rochas Okorocha have been at war throwing accusations and counter accusations about the Insecurity in IMO.

It was under this situation that Governor Uzodinma mounted the Rostrum at the Ahajioku Cultural Centre Owerri on January 4th, for the epic “Naming ceremony” that later turned out to be a hoax.

Certainly, a majority of the people at the ceremony and other Imo people were all disappointed as the Governor failed to read or reel out names after raising the curiosity of the masses.

So, the Government may have used that strategy to lure Imo sons and daughters to a “Naming Ceremony” that never held.

In the end Gov Uzodinma told us that Okorocha is his younger brother, and therefore not ready to join issues with him.

Instead he said that Okorocha’s problem is that he wants to remain a Governor, even after he had left office.

Since then, Uzodinma has been under attacks and praises from various quarters.

Some people are angry that the Governor chickened out and failed to make real his threat to unravel those distracting him from working, due to Insecurity that has nearly collapsed the State.

The Governor said he has now left the matter for the security Agents to pursue.

Other commentators insist that he should be praised for retracing his steps from making public those sponsoring insecurity in the State, as that could have stoked the problem into another dimension.

Indeed, the “Naming ceremony” has come and gone, but it will remain indelible in the anals of Uzodinma’s administration.

The Governor has missed an opportunity to remove finally the issue of insecurity from Imo political lexicon. He has fluffed a chance to bury the issue of Insecurity in Imo, and reduce its Sponsors to extinction by taking the battle to them through the public domain; Announcing their names publicly.

One thing certain is that constituted authorities cannot bow to any power outside State Power. The Governor should have walked the Talk, since he had promised Imo people that.

The Governor may have “postponed” this “Naming ceremony”, but should not relent in flushing out those causing mayhem in the State.

To have opted mentioning their names in the first place and later backed out, is an indication that Imo State Government is aware of these purveyors of Insecurity in the State. So,why spare them?

Government should rather pursue them to shame and death. Agents of death do not deserve to live. It is the law of nature.

For two years now, Imo State Government has wasted too much energy and funds fighting Insecurity. Development of the State has taken the back seat.

Let the remaining two years be for working for Imo people.

It is time to sheath the swords for peace and development of Imo State.
For not naming the Perpetrators of Insecurity in the State at the “Naming Ceremony” that never held,Imo people will not entertain any further excuses from Uzodinma for not delivering the goods.

Serie A: Ibrahimovic Misses Penalty As AC Milan Beat Roma 3-1

AC Milan kept up the pressure on local rivals Inter Milan in the Serie A title race with a 3-1 win over Roma on Thursday, while a coronavirus cloud hangs over the league with four of 10 matches to be left unplayed.

Stefano Pioli’s Milan are just one point behind champions and league leaders Inter after two early goals from Olivier Giroud and Junior Messias and a late strike from Rafael Leao won an entertaining contest at the San Siro.
However Inter were the first team on Thursday to have their match abandoned at half-time after Bologna were banned from playing to keep a Covid cluster at the club under control.
Regardless it was a big win for Milan, who were missing their two starting centre-backs Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori and a host of other players to Covid infections or the Africa Cup of Nations, but could have scored more after also striking the woodwork twice.
They are six points ahead of third-placed Napoli, who take on Juventus in the day’s late match, after holding off significant Roma pressure after Tammy Abraham pulled a goal back for the away side shortly before the break.
Leao struck the crucial third eight minutes from the end after Roma, already down to 10 following the 75th-minute sending off of Rick Karsdorp, had gone close through Abraham and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Roma finished the match down with nine men when Gianluca Mancini picked up a second yellow card and gave away a stoppage-time penalty for a foul on Leao, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s spot-kick was well-saved by Rui Patricio.
Jose Mourinho’s team are six points from the Champions League places alongside Lazio, who could only draw 3-3 with Empoli.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic nodded home his second of the game in the 93rd minute of a thrilling match at the Stadio Olimpico to snatch a draw for the hosts which leaves them in eighth.
“We want to finish in the top four. It’s going to be hard as we are some way away but there are still lots of matches to play,” the 26-year-old told DAZN.
Maurizio Sarri’s side are four points and one place ahead of promoted Empoli, who thought they were set to come away with another big away win after victories at Juventus and Napoli this season before Milinkovic-Savic struck.
– Covid chaos -The strange spectacle of teams turning up for fixtures they knew would not be played returned to Serie A after local health authorities (Azienda Sanitaria Locale, or ASL) barred Bologna, Torino, Salernitana and Udinese from playing their matches.
Earlier Serie A released a new protocol which insisted on teams playing matches as long as they had 13 players (including one goalkeeper) available who were born before December 31 2003, otherwise they would be handed a 3-0 defeat and be docked a point.
However figures from across the game have bemoaned the inconsistent decision making affecting teams who are left in the hands of the ASLs, bodies that answer to regional governments and act independently of one another.
“We’re in the hands of 20 regions and what is considered a cluster in one isn’t in another. If the decision comes from the ASL then it’s hard to make a protocol (for the whole league),” said Sarri.
Later on Thursday regional affairs minister Mariastella Gelmini said there would be a meeting between the government, regions and Serie A on Wednesday with the objective of “ensuring uniformity” in the league.

Sevilla Advance In Copa Del Rey, Villarreal Crash Out

Jules Kounde scored a superb goal as Sevilla moved into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey on Thursday after beating Real Zaragoza 2-0.
Kounde sent a dipping shot into the corner from the edge of the area in the 31st minute before Rafa Mir made the victory secure in the second half, the striker completing a counter-attack with a cool finish.

Zaragoza, who sit 16th in Spain’s second tier, had pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find a way through.
Alvaro Gimenez squandered the best chance late on when he diverted Miguel Puche’s shot over from close range.
Sevilla are second in La Liga and among the favourites to win the Copa del Rey this season. They reached the semi-finals last term but have not won the competition since 2010.
Villarreal failed to make it through after they suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by Sporting Gijon, who are 12th in the second division.
Bohdan Milovanov scored an 88th-minute winner for Sporting after Uro Durdevic had cancelled out Raul Albiol’s opener for Villarreal.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are safely through. Madrid defeated Alcoyano and Barca overcame Linares Deportivo on Wednesday.

The Man Who Brought Ashoka Tree To Nigeria

This year, Dr Michael Omolayole would turn 94. Many professional bodies already honour him as a national icon, but none seems to recognise the green side of this “corporate statesman,” who said he would be proud to be called a tree-hugger, a derogatory term used to refer to environmentalists.

The tree he “imported” into Nigeria in 1978, nurtured and popularised, is now more than an ornamental plant. It is used to fight climate change as a windbreaker, flower fence, boundary marker, and a check on desertification. And with some research, as it is already used in India, it could be used as a medicinal plant.
As one who believed in environmental protection and pollution control, Elder Omolayole was an early convert to tree planting. When he became the first indigenous Chief Executive Officer of Unilever Nigeria Plc, his innate green passion came alive in a very remarkable way to set a template for the country’s corporate sector. In the mid-1960s, Unilever had built a new detergent factory on the factory site at Apapa, on the shore of Lagos Lagoon. The detergent market was booming; so when Omolayole became CEO in the mid-1970s, he decided to expand the detergent plant.
As the company expanded its operation, the volume of their production was sufficiently large that the effluent being discharged into the lagoon became highly noticeable. Some days, there would be a big foam floating in the lagoon; in some other days, the roofs of buildings and leaves of trees in the neighbourhood would be covered with very fine blue detergent powder which had escaped into the atmosphere from the Unilever factory. So, in order to prevent regulators and their neighbours from taking action against the company, Omolayole directed the Technical Director of Unilever to create a position of “Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Manager.”
But to his horror, some of the staff shortened the title to “Pollution Manager”. Luckily, he was very effective and succeeded in reducing considerably the amount of pollution from the company, by advising on changes in the production process. Omolayole said that he was particularly happy that they saved the trees and also stopped polluting the lagoon.
Ashoka tree literally means “sorrow-less”. Its botanical name is “saraca indica,” and it has two types: the geotropic and the phototropic. The geotropic type has the shape of a cone; when growing up, it is usually straight and upright. On the other hand, the phototropic type is a shady tree with a shape like a big umbrella, comparable to a mango or almond tree. Ashoka originated from Southern Asia, especially India.
It will be difficult to categorically establish when and how Ashoka first came to Nigeria, but those interested in the species noted that Ashoka trees used to line the Police College in Ikeja, Lagos State, as ornamental trees. And, looking back at the history of the Police College, there was a time when there were Indian Police officers as part of the Training Command in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Indian officers might have introduced the Ashoka tree.
Nonetheless, the story of the Ashoka tree in Nigeria would not be complete without the contribution of Michael Omolayole. As Chairman of Unilever in Nigeria, he travelled to India in 1978 to attend an international conference. After the conference in New Delhi, he went to Bombay (now Mumbai) to visit the head office of Hindustan Lever, which took him to the Mumbai Unilever Research Station. When he got to the research station, a long avenue lined by Ashoka trees welcomed him – a most beautiful scenery, which resonated with his passion for trees and flowering plants. He promptly requested to have a cutting of the plant to propagate in Nigeria, to which the Research Director at the station replied that the tree could not be planted by having a cutting but by having seedlings. He eventually returned to Nigeria without the Ashoka.
Hence, to his utmost surprise, a tray of twelve Ashoka seedlings was delivered to his office in Lagos a few weeks later, and that began the eventful journey to popularise Ashoka in Nigeria’s ecosystem. For a long time, Omolayole did not know how to propagate the Ashoka tree. A lot of his friends who saw it in his country home at Ijebu-Imushin, Ogun State — where he transplanted them from Lagos after erroneously concluding that Lagos’ soil was not good for them — wanted to have it in their gardens. His gardener then showed him some seedlings he had uprooted near one of the trees, and he concluded that he had discovered how to propagate the tree. But when he planted the seeds, they did not germinate!
But because of the increasing demand for the seedlings from friends, Omolayole consulted Dr S. O. Talabi, an agricultural scientist of repute. Eventually, Talabi came to him with the discovery (from his research on the Ashoka seeds) that changed everything. Ashoka seeds must be planted within one or two weeks of the ripe fruit falling off the tree, otherwise, the embryo inside the seed would have died. The secret is to know when to plant the seed. It is obvious that in biology, all seeds that grow must have an embryo inside. Therefore, the easiest way to propagate Ashoka is to collect the seeds within a week or two of the seeds falling down and plant them. In that way, the elder statesman was able to raise thousands of seedlings within a reasonable time and began to make it available to fellow Nigerians who wanted to beautify their environment.
Omolayole said that from the moment he discovered how to propagate them, he then wanted to sell the seedlings in very large quantities as well. But he discovered that there was no ready market except through horticulturists. Therefore, he decided to popularise Ashoka in his own little way, by using the conical ornamental tree as the logo of his consultancy company.
According to this nonagenarian management consultant, his company chose the Ashoka logo because they believe it is a symbol of their uprightness, straightforwardness, transparency and integrity in their business transactions. Moreover, since the company advertises a lot in the newspapers in the process of executive selection for their clients, a lot of Nigerians now know the name of the tree. For instance, before then, most Nigerians referred to the Ashoka tree as the “masquerade” because it looks like a masquerade in Yoruba called “Igunu.”
The Ashoka tree, mostly seen in Nigeria, is the conical type because its shape makes it unique and picturesque, especially when the trees are artistically spaced in a linear fashion. It is, therefore, heartwarming that Omolayole has also contributed to the knowledge of this species in Nigeria through the publication of his book, The Story of the Ashoka Tree in Nigeria, where he shares his experience, thereby guiding eco-lovers and aspiring environmentalists on how to plant and care for the now-popular ornamental tree.
According to him, the challenge of monitoring Ashoka is to keep it as a cone with good foliage and not too tall. He advised that one way of solving this is for scientists to develop the dwarf variety through biotechnology. The other way is to plant the seedlings in concrete flower pots or plastic flower pots. For those trees that are already growing tall, it is easy to start pruning the trees after they have reached the height of about ten to twelve feet, and the whole tree can be subjected to periodic pruning still to create a semblance of a truncated cone. He, however, said it is not advisable for branches that touch the ground to be pruned because when they are pruned the tree loses its conical shape.

Uzodinma’s Passionate Dedication To Restore Peace And Unity In Imo Polity.

BY COMR SAM ND ANYANWU

In recent times, our dear Imo State has been plunged into a state of skirmishes by enemies of the society who do not mean well for the ordinary and common citizens.

This situation however, instilled fear and panic in the minds of every indigene and resident of Imo State that“fright” has known us by other names and no one could no longer walk on the streets of Owerri without fear of being kidnapped or assassinated nor sleep in their houses with two eyes closed.

These ugly developments were borne out of the desperate and inordinate ambitions of some political elites to turn Imo into an empire.

A popular maxim says and I quote “Don’t let desperate situations make you do desperate things”.
Undoubtedly, their desperate actions have caused Imo State a lot of economic loss, under development and more worrisome is the loss of innocent lives whose spirits will continue to haunt them till Jesus come again.
Albert Einstein said and I quote, “Peace can only be achieved by understanding”.

These enemies of the state probably lack an understanding of the word of God in Romans chapter 13 vs 1 to 5 which says and I quote “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The scripture in verse 2 says in continuance; “Consequently, who ever rebel against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves”.
Conclusively, verse 5 said; “Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities not only because of possible punishment, but also as a matter of conscience”.

This is the word of the Lord…

As the Chief security officer of the state who is saddled with the responsibility of protecting life’s and properties, the executive Governor of Imo State Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma amidst all the challenges did not dilly-dilly in addressing the issue by engaging all security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the security of lives and properties.

As if that was not enough, he has also engaged in quarterly stakeholders briefing of the people of Imo State so as to update Imo people on how his administration is conducting the policy and affairs of the state which is a proove of the Senator Hope Uzodimma’s led administration.

The stakeholders forum also offered an oppirtunity for the government to interact with Imo stakeholders on all issues of germane concern and the safety of Imo indigenes is not an exception.
The restoration of peace and unity which Imo State was hitherto known for wouldn’t have been possible if the governor had not taken proactive steps which have today restored the peace, unity and tranquility in Imo thereby restoring the lost glory of our dear state that was eaten up by the cankerworms that do not mean well for our peaceful Imo.

We all owe our state a duty to promote the cause of its unity and integration and Senator Hope Uzodimma has shown dedication towards ensuring a peaceful and united Imo which should be encouraged by all well meaning Imolites.
We all have a sacred duty to champion a better society in which all Imolites would be judged more by their contribution towards building a better Imo and less by zonal or political affiliation. We must welcome every effort directed at helping our state Government build the Imo of our collective dream, a state in which the breeze of patriotism and unity will always tame the storm of disunity irrespective of our various political divide.
The challenges of insecurity that faced us were as critical as the actions of the ethnic militia and bandit attacks. Though, we were not daunted.

If our hope is actually invested in our government to right whatever wrongs done to us in the past,
then we should ask ourselves what our support system to our state since Senator Hope Uzodimma is not a magic wand that will turn an ugly face to princess charming.
JOHN F. KENNEDY said and l quote; “And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”.

Our expectations are anchored in the confident belief that the future of Imo State, its development and unity rest on the survival of this administration and it should be encouraged by all well meaning Imolites.

The efforts of government institutions to ensure a peaceful Imo should not be sabotaged because the safety success, peace and development of our dear state is the responsibility of everyone and not the Government alone; therefore, in examining the capacity, success or achievement of our government to do both the possible and impossible, we should take into consideration our support system to our state.

Every one of us has a role to play in removing the obstacles to our peace and unity as a people. The unity of Imo people cannot be reduced to mathematical equations.

If government at the state, local levels and all political stakeholders do their part with the efforts of each one of us doing his own little bit with total commitment by both words and action, then our obstacles would be our stepping stone to the great Imo of our dreams.

Being A Firstborn Shaped Me Into A Leader That I’ve Become –Funmilayo Omo

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Enterprise Life Nigeria, Mrs Funmilayo Omo, tells GODFREY GEORGE how she balances work and family life
What kind of home did you grow up in?

I am the first of five children. I recall we had cousins staying with us and it was more like a community. My late father was a reverend. So, we had a lot of church activities. All the churchgoing I should have done in my lifetime, I think I have done in my youth. If I don’t go to church from now till whenever, I think I have marked attendance for all. I grew up having a lot of people around. We grew up in the vicarage, so we would always have people come in with their kids. We always had visitors. We always had to cook, entertain, and always had to take part in church activities.
I remember we used to ride bicycles. When I was learning how to ride a bicycle, I fell. At one point, I almost gave up riding. But my immediate younger brother would ride his bicycle all day. He had friends who had bicycles, so they would ride the bicycle all day. I found myself feeling awkward in the midst of mostly boys. We were three females to two males, until one of the girls passed on. So, now, we have a 2:2 male-female ratio.
Would you say the religious background you had has an influence on the person you grew up to become?
Yes, it almost made me to conform to a particular pattern of living, as expected of a pastor’s daughter. I am sure that my colleagues would say I try to be a conformist because I grew up having to do so. It was more like a stereotype. People would say, “This is what is expected of you. This is what you cannot do. These things are not allowed. That is allowed. This is how you should conduct yourself as the daughter of a clergy.” I think that also shaped my growing up to a large extent. We had to participate in church activities. I was even in the choir and I was also a member of the Guild of Stewards at some point. So, all in all, this helped shape me and contributed to why I am the way I am today. Having to conform was there, but as we grew older, we started to break out of that conformity; in our words, we started ‘gaining our freedom’ as we became more independent.
Being the firstborn instills a sense of responsibility in a child. Does your being a firstborn have any bearing on why you are a CEO today?
I think so. I would say that, when we go into retrospection after many years you begin to wonder how you ended up being the way you are. I think my role being the first of five largely also helped to shape my leadership qualities, because I had to look after my siblings. I had to mentor and lead them, care for them and give them direction. Unconsciously, I was building up these traits of a leader. By and large, that must have helped me begin the journey without realising it. I have had to lead and be a forerunner. As part of my childhood, I recall that my mom had to go to school. So, I was left with the responsibility of having to look after my siblings and dad. So, little wonder that fast-track to today, somehow, I am able to inspire people and lead.
How did you come about the idea of studying insurance?
Just like many other parent at that time, my parents wanted me to become a doctor, lawyer, engineer and the like. I wanted to be an accountant. I found myself in insurance because I fell three points short of the cut-off point for Accounting, so I was offered Insurance. Initially, I was very skeptical. My mom really didn’t know what insurance was all about, but I recall at that time that the Dean of the Faculty said to me, “Funmi, give it a shot. If after your first year you don’t like Insurance, you can switch back to Accounting!” I went to the Department of Insurance and I found it very interesting. Fast-track to today, what would I say? I would say it was destiny. That is the word I would use. By God’s grace, I am where I am today because of that decision even though I didn’t set out to do it. I have enjoyed this space and I am very passionate about it (insurance).
You have had a really successful career. What are some highlights of your journey?
I would say joining Enterprise Life Nigeria Limited as MD/CEO, and I would tell you why. This is because when I was in the African Alliance, where I cut my teeth, I felt that I had seen a lot there and had done a good length of time, almost three decades. For me, I was able to get to the peak of my career and I felt I had done well. I said to myself, “If I had the opportunity to start a company, what would I do or not do?” and that is why one needs to be careful of what one thinks and the prayers one says. Till today, I have had the opportunity of being able to start a company which was the experience I wanted to have that took me to Enterprise Life. That is why I would say this is the highlight of my career. It has been the grace of God and my passion. I am very passionate about what I do. I am a very passionate person. I put my all in what I do. Because I do everything perfectly, I don’t allow the pressure to get to me. The passion in me overrides the pressure. That is the reason I have been able to manage and it appears like I have had it smooth all through.
Before your role as MD/CEO of Enterprise Life Nigeria Limited, you had also led in different companies. How has your experience been as a woman in leadership?
Nobody has a smooth journey. I don’t think so. Even men don’t have their journeys smooth. Life is not a straight line. Life is more of a curve. I would say that in my journey through life, it hasn’t been smooth, for two basic reasons. Firstly, as I said, nobody has a smooth journey. Secondly, there is always that piece of being a woman, whether it is written boldly or just there within the lines very blurred. Prior to my role as the MD/CEO of Enterprise Life, I used to also lead a company, African Alliance. I have also had to take various leadership roles in various capacities, not just work. The truth is that there have been challenges. In some cases, I have had to work twice as hard as my male counterparts just to prove myself. I have also had to balance all this with my home and some social commitments and expectations of the society. You cannot be in a society like ours and be socially deaf to what happens within that place. Balancing it, especially as a woman, has been challenging. That is why I said we have to do more work that men would have to do.
How exactly have you been able to, in your role as MD/CEO, balance work and family lives?
I would say that, first, there is a God factor. I always say to people that there is nothing you can do on your own. You can only do and achieve so much with the grace and by the help of God. When you say ‘balancing’, the way and manner to balance is circumstantial. It depends on the situation and seasons. There are seasons where you have to give more attention to work. At such times, you’d find out that the home would feel the brunt but you require having a supportive family. If the family is not supportive, there would be an imbalance. That is the truth. There are times when the demands of the work are not as much as the demands of the home. At such times, you are able to prioritise home and still pay attention to work. The amount of time devoted to work is then toned down. You have to give that attention. So, you see that this depends solely on the situation. At this point, I say, thankfully, that my kids are grown up. But they didn’t grow up overnight. In the course of having to nurture them and build a career, I have had to find balance by paying less attention to certain things. So, when I need to give attention to the children, my social life becomes zero. It is the children, work and zero social life. When the children are in school or they have a holiday, then, I gave more time to work; I have some time for socials and then I spend some time with them. In the midst of all these, I must also make sure to create an oasis of sanity for myself; this is what you would call ‘me time’. Here, I am able to catch my breath and think through issues. That ‘me time’ happens, sometimes, when everyone is asleep. I would say that finding a balance is determining how you want to prioritise depending on the situation and season.
Do you identify as a feminist?
To be honest, with you, I don’t. I am bold to say I am not a feminist. I believe that we all have our places and we need to know our places. We are all unique. We all have our space and we all deserve to thrive, depending on where we find ourselves and what we feel is our calling.
Will you say Nigerian women are being given enough opportunities to take the lead in nation building?
From my perspective, I would say that Nigerian women haven’t had enough opportunities to lead. I think they can do better. They can do more. You would always see that space. If you go back in time, you would see that we had more Nigerian women excelling, leading and managing better. If more women are given opportunity, I think that you would have them do much more and excel far beyond what we have now. I think that the platform must be there for more women to thrive and take the lead.
You are involved in so much philanthropy and giving back; what inspires you to do this?
I think one of things we need to learn as human beings created by God is that we are here for a purpose. This purpose is not about us alone and what we want. Life and success are not measured by what you accomplish. I say to people that we all have to define what success means to us. Strictly speaking, the level of success of any individual is measured by the level of impact that person has made. A life without impact has not added any value to this earth. You come to this world and accomplish all you want, and it is all to yourself and you have not impacted anybody, you have not fulfilled your purpose or added value. That is why I do what I do. That is why I am who I am.
Was this why you started the Funmi Omo Foundation where you are the promoter?
The foundation is as a result of wanting to impact lives and not the other way round. Part of what I owe my society is to be able to give back. So, I must also be able to give back because of the grace I have enjoyed.
Why do you think Nigerians find it very difficult to insure their property?
First, I would say that they find it difficult because they have not come to the full understanding of the value that insurance brings to the table. When you don’t fully understand something, you cannot be fully involved. Another reason for a general apathy towards insurance is trust issues. A bit of a misconception is there. Misconception can also be linked to not being too educated or aware.
How can insurance firms help build this trust in Nigerians?
We have to continue to educate and create awareness. We would continue to build confidence. The way by which we can build confidence is to ensure that obligations are honoured and when there are claims, they should be honoured. When there are enquiries, the response time has to be good. When payments need to be made, they should be made in a manner that is convenient to the customers. The combination of these would help to increase consciousness and appreciation of insurance, and of course, increase patronage of insurance.

Nigerian Kidnappers Now Target Dual Citizens, US Warns Travellers

The United States has warned travellers to Nigeria, especially US citizens, to reconsider their trip as kidnappers now target citizens with dual nationalities.

The US State Department’s Nigeria Travel Advisory dated January 4, 2022, noted that US citizens with perceived wealth are also targets for kidnappers.
The advisory also stated listed some states US citizens should not travel to or stay vigilant when visiting adding that “Violent crime such as armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, hostage-taking, banditry, and rape is common throughout the country.
“Kidnappings for ransom occur frequently, often targeting dual national citizens who have returned to Nigeria for a visit, as well as U.S. citizens with perceived wealth. Kidnapping gangs have also stopped victims on interstate roads.”
The US warned citizens against travelling to Borno, Yobe, and Northern Adamawa states because “The security situation in these states is fluid and unpredictable due to widespread terrorist activity, inter-communal violence, and kidnapping. Security operations to counter these threats may occur without warning.
“Terrorist groups based in the Northeast routinely target humanitarian camps, security forces, churches, schools, mosques, government installations, educational institutions, entertainment venues, and road travellers.”
It added that travel to Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Zamfara states should be reconsidered due to roadside banditry and unexpected counter-attacks from security agencies.
“The security situation in these states is fluid and unpredictable due to widespread inter-communal violence and armed criminality, especially kidnapping and roadside banditry. Security operations to counter these threats may occur without warning,” the advisory warned.
The US also warned that the danger is not restricted to the northern part of the country listing coastal areas such as Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers states (with the exception of Port Harcourt) as places US citizens should avoid travelling to.
“Crime is rampant throughout Southern Nigeria, and there is a heightened risk of kidnapping and maritime crime, especially in the Gulf of Guinea. Violent civil unrest and armed militancy persist in these areas,” the advisory added.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced changes Wednesday to Covid rules for travel to England, scrapping the need for pre-departure tests and quarantine on arrival until the traveller has tested negative.

Lagos Govt, Police Conspiring To Cover Up My Son’s Death — Oromoni Snr

Father of late Dowen college student, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr., has stated that the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force are conspiring to cover up the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.

This was contained in a statement signed by Oromoni Snr. on Wednesday, a copy of which was sent to our correspondent, which was a response to the legal advice issued by the Lagos State Department of Public Prosecution on Tuesday.

The management of Dowen College had stated that the late Oromoni Jnr had sustained injuries from playing football.
However, Oromoni Snr stated that the evidence from the autopsy has contradicted the school’s claims.
He said, “The management of Dowen College, Lekki Lagos has always claimed that my late son sustained the injury while playing football.
All evidence gathered so far has shown that this is not the true story but a way to cover up their negligence.
“Based on the outcome of the autopsy report which contradicts the story of Dowen college, it is my firm belief that there is a conspiracy among the officials of Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command to cover up the circumstances surrounding the gruesome death of my son, Late Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.”
He added that it was shameful for the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police, Lagos State Command to exonerate the five Dowen College students and staff despite his son’s final testimony.
“It is my belief and a shame on the Lagos State Government to have allowed this kind of gang up against an innocent boy who died as a result of negligence from the management of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos.
“There is a clear oral statement from my son before he died and his schoolmates that he was tortured and given an unknown substance suspected to be POISON which led to his death.
“It is disheartening that in the DPP advice, the State of Lagos claims that the five suspects have no case to answer,” Oromoni stated.

Aginy As Sylvester Oromoni’s Mother Weeps Over Exoneration Of Dowen College Students, Officials

The mother of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old boy allegedly beaten to death by fellow students of Dowen College, has cried out to God to avenge her son.

This was after five officials and five students of Dowen College linked to Oromoni’s death were exonerated by the Lagos State government through the Director of Public Prosecution.

Those cleared by the state government are 16-year-old Favour Benjamin, Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14) and Kenneth Inyang (15) and 15-year-old Micheal Kashamu, the son of the late senator, Buruji Kashamu.
Officials cleared are Celina Uduak, Valentine Igboekweze, Hammed Ayomo Bariyu, Adesanya Olusesan Olusegun and one Adeyemi.
Oromoni was reported to have died of injuries sustained after he was allegedly beaten by five senior students of the school who wanted to initiate him into a cult group.
A claim by his father that he was also fed a chemical substance was, however, dismissed by Dowen College which stated that the boy sustained injuries while playing football with his colleagues.
Oromoni’s mother, shortly after the students and officials of Dowen College were exonerated, made a video showing her lamenting that she couldn’t celebrate Christmas and New Year with her son.
She said, “The whole world will know that there is God that fights for the oppressed.
“Jehovah God, arise. King of glory, arise and cut short the lives of those that cut the life of my son short, including those supporting them.
“Let them feel the pains that I’m passing through. If they breathe the air that you created, God let your rod fall on them.”

Nigerians To Pay VAT For Digital Services – Finance Minister

Nigerians may have to pay more for digital services as the Federal Government has introduced a policy requiring foreign companies that provide digital services in the country to collect and remit Value Added Tax to the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

As reported by the Punch, The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said this during the public presentation of the 2022 budget in Abuja on Wednesday.
She said that the new policy is contained in Section 30 of the Finance Act which amended the provisions of Section 10, 31 and 14 on VAT obligations for non-resident digital companies.
The Minister said, “Section 30 of the finance act designed to amend section 10, 31 and 14 of VAT is in relations to VAT obligations for non-resident digital companies and the mechanism that will be used is to restrict VAT obligations mainly to digital non-resident companies who supply individuals in Nigeria who can’t themselves self-account for VAT.
“So if you visit Amazon, we are expecting Amazon to add VAT charge to whatever transaction you are paying for.
“I am using Amazon as an example. We are going to be working with Amazon to be agreed to be registered as a tax agent for the FIRS.
“So Amazon will now collect this payment and remit to FIRS and this is in line with global best practices, we have been missing out on this stream of revenue.
For clarification, the Minister said, the new law applies to foreign companies that provide digital services such as, “apps, high-frequency trading, electronic data storage, online advertising” among others.
Speaking further, Ahmed noted that in line with Section 4 of the Finance Act, non-resident companies are now expected to pay tax at 6 per cent on their turnover.
The Federal Government had in 2019 disclosed plans to tax foreign digital service providers offering services to Nigerians according to amended provisions in the 2020 Finance Act.
However, this is the first time the government is setting a specific tax rate.
Ahmed said, “Section 4 of the ACT which is taxation of e commerce businesses owned by non-resident companies on a fair and reasonable turnover basis has been set at 6 per cent.
“This provision empowers FIRS to access non-resident firms to tax on fair and reasonable basis of turnover and from digital services provided to Nigerian customers.”
She said the move was aimed at modernizing the taxation of Information Technology and the digital economy in line with current realities, adding that this is in conformity with the provisions of the National Development Plan 2021 – 2025.
Earlier in December 2021, Facebook, in a statement, disclosed that it will, from January 1, 2022, begin to charge VAT on the sale of advertisement to advertisers, regardless of whether they’re buying ads for business or personal purposes.

Nigeria Will Collapse If It Conducts 2023 Poll With 1999 Constitution – Afe Babalola

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, said on Tuesday that Nigeria would grind to a halt if it should conduct the 2023 general elections with the present 1999 Constitution.

Babalola said to avert the collapse of the country in view of the challenges created by the constitution, there was an urgent need for the National Assembly to pass a resolution adopting the 1960 Constitution before the next general elections.
The legal luminary spoke in Ado Ekiti during a ceremony to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the establishment of ABUAD, an institution he said had through research “contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of the country with timely innovations across all sectors.”
He said, “I am happy that I conceived this university 12 years ago and since then, we have been going from strength to strength, making exploits in all our endeavours. Our vision is to make this place a great institution in university education in the country through teaching, research and community service.
“I can confirm to you today that our herbal drug produced through extensive research by our team of researchers has healed about 19 patients, who were infected with COVID-19. They were healed perfectly in less than five days of use. That tells you the level of our research in ABUAD.”
The founder invited the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to visit the university and see the landmark achievements in the last 12 years with a view to “finding a way of replicating ABUAD in the different geo-political zones of the country.”
Babalola said, “We must avoid recycling the old failed leaders in the governance of this country. Any mistake of electing a new set of leaders under the present constitution will ruin Nigeria completely.
“The simple way out is for the National Assembly to pass a resolution adopting the 1960/1963 Constitution with necessary amendments such as having in place six regions and a one-house parliament.”
The educationist faulted the National Assembly over increasing creation of universities across the country, saying the development had usurped the power of the National Universities Commission as prescribed by law on the establishment of the institutions.
Babalola, who said the development would have adverse effects on the nation’s education sector, called on the Ministry of Education and the NUC “to exercise their powers to checkmate this in the interest of quality education in the country.”
“Every attempt must be made by all stakeholders to put a lid on the establishment of political universities that hardly survive those who put them in place after they are out of power, otherwise there will be a crash in the quality of private universities,” he added.

Purpoted Defection Of Emeka Ihedioha To APGA; Fake News – PDP Imo State

PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, IMO STATE

PRESS RELEASE

IHEDIOHA’S PURPORTED DEFECTION TO APGA, A FAKE NEWS, MALICIOUS JOKE, HANDIWORK OF DROWNING POLITICIANS.

~ IHEDIOHA IS OUR BRAND, HE GOES NO WHERE.

We have been inundated with calls by concerned people of Imo State over a flying rumour, syndicated in the social media by enemies of Imo State, purporting that our leader, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, CON will defect to the All Progressives Grand Allaince, (APGA) to vie for the 2023 governorship election

This party, initially did not consider a disclaimer necessary, for the simple reason that Rt. Hon. Ihedioha is not known to prostitute between political parties. He is known and has indeed remained a consequential leader, consistent major financier, loyal and dedicated member and leader of our party since helping to found it in 1998.

For emphasis, there is no other truly democratic party in Nigeria and in Imo State in particular, aside the PDP. We are not unaware of the increasing desperation of agents of darkness, who are afraid of the imminent reclaiming of our stolen mandate come 2023.

It is incontrovertible that His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, is our brand. And our message ahead of the 2023 general elections is the celebrated achievements of the Rebuild Imo administration within the seven months.

The PDP led Rebuild Imo administration laid a solid foundation for the rebuilding process of our state. It is on record that all the sectors of the state were receiving attention before the usurpers broke into the government house. We restored salaries and pensions from 70% to 100% and paid as and when due; adequate security of lives and property, began construction on over 33 critical roads across the state; flagged of an audacious agro revolution and youth empowerment; aggressive automated revenue system; autonomous local government administration; implemented the Treasury Single Account; Qualitative free education, aggressive investment drive; transparency, accountability, rule of law etc.

Our party takes pride in the achievements of the Rebuild Imo administration for which we are being pressured by the people of Imo State across party lines to endeavor to seek their mandate to continue the rebuilding process.

Lastly, we wish to warn mischief makers, agents of darkness, blackmailers enemies of Imo State, Senator Uzodinma and his failed APC cohorts, to look elsewhere and stop any such fake news. Imo people are wiser and are vigilant to these and other devices of the enemies.

Murder Of RCCG Pastor: We Hit Him With Plank, Stabbed Him With Broken Bottle, Stole His Money – Suspects

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two fleeing suspects, Farouk Mohammed and Jamiu Kasali, who murdered Pastor Babatunde Dada of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG on 6th Avenue, Festac Town.

The suspects, who claimed to be upcoming musicians, stabbed the 46-year-old pastor to death on December 2, 2021, and fled with his bag containing some money.

It was gathered that the suspects had approached the unsuspecting pastor on the pretext of being strangers in Lagos who had no place to stay.

The deceased lodged them in a room in the church which also served as his residence only to be attacked at about 12 noon the next day and abandoned in the pool of his blood to die.

It was further gathered that the suspects attended church service the Sunday before the incident, and also came out during an altar call to ‘surrender their lives to Jesus’

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, AIG Hakeem Odumosu, who confirmed the arrest, disclosed that Mohammed was tracked to Ilorin, Kwara State, while his partner in crime, Kasali, was apprehended in Festac Town, Lagos.

In an interview published by Vanguard, Kasali, said, “On the day we struck, the Pastor came to Church in morning, gave us money for food and left. Later, he came in with a bag containing money,”

“Few hours before then, Farouk got a telephone call from his mother, urging him to come home quickly that she was sick. We were contemplating on how he would get money to take his mother to the hospital when the Pastor walked in with the bag containing money.

“We followed him upstairs, hit him with a plank, before stabbing him with a broken bottle in the neck. He fell down. We grabbed the bag and left the house.

“I lied to my mother that I would get at least, N200,000 from the show. We are upcoming musicians. We have been in the industry for three years. When things were not going on as planned, we decided to do something else , in order to invest in our music industry. My stage name is Zealight while Kasali’s J Fresh,” he said.

“Our mission in Lagos was to look for where to perform. But that plan changed immediately we saw Pastor with the bag containing money.” he added.

Eagles Owed Two-Match Allowances –Musa

The Super Eagles players are still being owed two-match allowances by the Nigeria Football Federation ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Eagles, who are expected to arrive in Garuoa on Wednesday, are drawn in Group D with seven-time winners Egypt, Guinea- Bissau and Sudan.

Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, captain Ahmed Musa stated that the team would hold a meeting when the entire squad was complete, ahead of the tournament.
“We are owed two games allowances by the NFF and we will be having a meeting when every player is in camp,” the Fatih Karagumruk forward said.
“The coaches, officials of the NFF and representatives of the players will meet to discuss, so we can stick with a plan.”
The 28-year-old, a member of the 2013 squad that won the AFCON title for the third time in South Africa, added that the Eagles won’t be in Cameroon for sightseeing, despite their late preparations for the tournament.
The former Leicester City winger joined up with the squad on Monday, with the team having just three full training sessions since last week.
“We have been together for a while now and we are ready for this tournament,” Musa added.’’

Juventus Face Napoli As Serie A Restarts

Juventus begin a crucial month for the season with the visit of old rivals Napoli as Serie A returns to action on Thursday, with a Covid-19 resurgence looming large over fixtures.

Dozens of players among the top division’s 20 clubs are out of action with the virus, with Juve captain Giorgio Chiellini one of those sidelined after testing positive and 15 new cases among Verona and Udinese’s squads announced on Tuesday.
And the rapid spread of the virus has led to stadium capacities being cut back to 50 percent as the Italian government tries to keep the lid on another wave of the pandemic.
Napoli coming to town marks the start of a run of tricky fixtures for Massimiliano Allegri’s side, who are fifth, a full 12 points behind league leaders and reigning champions Inter Milan.
They also have to take on Roma, AC Milan and Atalanta – who are four points ahead of Juve in the final Champions League spot – all before mid-February.
Chiellini’s absence and injury to his club and Italy defensive partner Leonardo Bonucci leaves Juve shorn of two of their most influential players, while in attack Paulo Dybala and Federico Chiesa will be on the bench after recovering from injury.
Napoli will arrive in Turin with a long absentee list, largely thanks to players at the Africa Cup of Nations and Covid cases, with coach Luciano Spalletti set to stay at home with Covid after testing positive on Tuesday.
Star striker Victor Osimhen, who has already missed a chunk of fixtures with facial fractures, is also positive alongside Hirving Lozano, Eljif Elmas, Kevin Malcuit and Mario Rui, who is however suspended for Thursday’s match.
Spalletti’s side have a seven-point gap to make up on Inter after a disastrous December in which they ceded top spot and dropped down to third following three straight home defeats, and are also without defensive lynchpin Kalidou Koulibaly and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, both at the Cup of Nations.
Ready to pounce are AC Milan and Roma, who face off at the San Siro hoping to gain ground in their respective title and Champions League races.
Second-placed Milan can extend the three-point gap between them and Napoli while Jose Mourinho’s Roma are two behind Juve in sixth.
Worst hit by the virus are Salernitana, who with nine players positive have asked for their match with Venezia — their first since their place in Serie A was saved — to be postponed after health authorities again blocked their players from playing.
Businessman Danilo Iervolino stepped in at the last minute to make sure that Salernitana, bottom of Serie A, were not booted from Italy’s top flight over the New Year by buying the club and ending Lazio president Claudio Lotito’s reign as owner.
The club had been in limbo after the Italian Football Federation refused to extend until the end of the season the December 31 deadline for appointed independent directors to sell the club and end a double ownership banned by federation rules.
Salernitana have not played a match since being hammered 5-0 by Inter on December 17, their last match of 2021 abandoned after local health authorities banned them from travelling to Udinese four days later, and the rash of virus cases at the southern club means Thursday’s match is likely suffer the same fate.
Player to watch: Dusan Vlahovic
All eyes are on Fiorentina forward Vlahovic with the January transfer window under way. The Gazzetta Dello Sport have reported that Arsenal were preparing a 70 million-euro bid to get their hands on one of Europe’s hottest young talents midway through the season.
Italy’s leading scorer with 16 goals, the 21-year-old would reportedly prefer to stay in Florence until the end of the campaign but with interest hotting up in England and Spain, this could be one of the last times fans get to see him turn out in Viola.
Key stats68 – the number of players out with Covid-19 infections as of Tuesday evening, according to an AFP count.
16 – Vlahovic leads the Serie A scoring charts with this total, three ahead of Italy striker Ciro Immobile.

Akpeyi Welcomes Fight For Eagles No.1 Spot

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has admitted there’s stiff competition for the No.1 spot at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Interim Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen, included four goalkeepers in his final 28-man squad for the AFCON with Akpeyi, Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and Enyimba’s John Noble slugging it out for the Eagles first choice position.
Akpeyi was the first choice goalkeeper at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt and was in goal for five of the seven games, while Uzoho and Ezenwa played one game apiece.
However, the introduction of Sparta Rotterdam keeper Maduka Okoye to the squad relegated the rest to the bench.
But with the appointment of Eguavoen to lead the team at the AFCON, the goalkeepers have been battling to claim the starting spot in Cameroon.
Akpeyi, who has been impressive for South African side Kaizer Chiefs this season,

said the competition was good for the team, adding that he would back anyone picked as first choice.
“It’s a good development (clean slate for every player). Maduka has been doing so well, Uzoho and Noble have been good as well, we are all working hard for the spot but most importantly, whichever one the coach decides to play at the end of the day, every other person will have to support him.
“Everyone is in top form at the moment and I’m going to support them if I don’t get my chance.”

AFCON: Security Fears Loom Over Africa’s Football Fiesta In Cameroon

After overcoming fears of postponement because of the Covid pandemic, the Africa Cup of Nations now faces its next big worry: security.
Host nation Cameroon will ceremonially launch the month-long tournament on Sunday when they face Burkina Faso.

But the authorities are struggling with separatist gunmen in the west and jihadist raiders in the north — and some fear militants will seize the country’s turn in the sporting spotlight to launch attacks.
Security forces in the west are on high alert after armed groups sent threatening messages to teams in Group F, gathering Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and Gambia.
The four teams are scheduled to play in the coastal town of Limbe, and their training site is Buea, a hotspot of separatist unrest.
“The threats are very serious,” Blaise Chamango, head of an NGO in Buea called Human Is Right, told AFP by phone.
“On Wednesday, there was an explosion in a takeaway outlet in Limbe. That sent a very powerful message.”
He added, “The government has stationed heavily armed soldiers at nearly all the crossroads in Buea and Limbe. Security and defence forces are arresting and searching everyone they see in some districts.”
– Separatist campaign –
Buea is the capital of the Southwest Region, which with the neighbouring Northwest Region is in the grip of violence sparked by a bid by Cameroon’s anglophone minority to secede from the French-majority country.
After years of frustration at perceived discrimination, separatists declared a “Federal Republic of Ambazonia” in October 2017.
The entity, which has no international recognition, is based on the former British Southern Cameroons, which joined Cameroon after the French colony gained independence in 1960.
More than 3,500 people have died and more than 700,000 have fled their homes. Rights monitors say atrocities and abuses have been committed by both sides.
In his New Year’s message, Cameroon’s veteran hardline president, 88-year-old Paul Biya, warned that while some independence fighters had handed themselves in, the militants “continue to engage in criminal activity, increasing their use of improvised explosives and killing unarmed civilians”.
The government’s mantra is that “safety will be guaranteed” for AFCON, although neither the authorities nor the Confederation of African Football (CAF) responded to AFP requests for information on security measures.
– Jihadist fears-
On Monday, the atmosphere in the capital, Yaounde, was more relaxed than in the troubled English-speaking regions some 250 kilometres (150 miles) to the west.
A handful of security agents kept half an eye on final preparations at the brand-new Paul Biya Stadium in the district of Olembe, built specially for the CAN and home to the Cameroonian national squad.
“Security is only really a concern in the Northwest and Southwest regions and I think our defence forces have enough experience to respond adequately,” said James Mouangue, head of the national human rights commission and a professor of public law.
“The security measures put in place are exceptional, given the level of risk, and there were no problems when we hosted the African Nations Championship in January 2021,” he noted.
Separatist militants are not the only spectre haunting Cameroon.
The country’s Far North region, the tongue of land that touches on the troubled Lake Chad region, has in the past suffered cross-border raids by jihadists from neighbouring Nigeria.
Attacks have fallen back since militants from Boko Haram and the West African branch of the so-called Islamic State group began a bloody internecine war.
But some fear the groups could seek to grab attention by striking in Yaounde, the economic hub Douala or the north itself.
Others, though, say such plans may be too much of a stretch.
“I don’t think the jihadists can disrupt the Cup unless they carry out a really large attack, even though that remains a possibility,” said Guibai Gatama, editor of northern Cameroon’s leading twice-weekly publication, L’Oeil du Sahel (The Eye of the Sahel).
“The stadium in the North where Group D (comprising Egypt, Nigeria, Sudan and Guinea Bissau) will play is located in Garoua, which is very far from their sphere of operation.”

Uzodimma To Okorocha: You’re A Younger Brother To Me, I Can’t Join Issues With You

The Imo State Governor Sen. Hope Uzodimma has broken his silence on issues revolving around attacks on his government and person by former Governor of the State, Sen. Rochas Okorocha.

Sen. Okorocha had accused the Imo State Governor of witch-hunting his family since his emergence as Governor. But during the 6th Imo State Stakeholders meeting held in Government House Owerri, Governor Uzodimma said he would not join issues with Okorocha, whom he described as not willing to abdicate the office of Governor after years of leaving office.

“I have said it times without number I have no personal grouse with anybody. All of you who know me well in Imo state, I tried one time or the other to contest election. In some cases, I won. In some cases, I did not win. And when I didn’t win, I left back for my businesses. When I won, I served the people with all my heart.

“I have many former Governors in Imo state, I have Governor Achike Udenwa. I have Governor Ikedi Ohakim. Emeka Ihedioha; former Governor, Okorocha; former Governor. But none of them want to take the whole State as a private property.

“The difference between the other former Governors and Okorocha is that he is out of office but he still wants to be in office. Okorocha is a younger brother to me. I’m older than him, if not for anything, traditionally I deserve to be respected by him. I don’t want to join issues with him. Let him just know that he is not the Governor and for the short period I will be here God-willing, he should allow me to be Governor.

2023 Presidency: Mimiko Denies Rumoured Ambition To Be Tambuwal’s Running Mate

The former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, has denied his rumoured ambition to become the running mate of Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, in the 2023 presidency bid.

Mimiko noted this while debunking a report from a national newspaper (not The PUNCH) regarding a meeting with Tambuwal to discuss his role as the vice-president come 2023 general election.
Dismissing the report as a “false permutation”, the ex-governor in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Digital Communications, John Paul Akinduro, noted that such a meeting never took place.
According to him, the reports “are all false and do not represent his interest and position on the political reality of the PDP as Nigeria coasts home to the 2023 election.”
The statement partly read, “Mimiko is aligned with the aspiration of the people of Southern Nigeria as exemplified by the call of the Southern Governors for a Southern president in the next dispensation and he has not in all his deliberations within Afenifere muted any idea of seeking their support for a VP ambition.
“Above all, Mimiko has made it clear that he is in the PDP to work towards actualising the decision of the majority of party members towards rescuing and rebuilding Nigeria for the good of the people and not any personal, individual agenda.”
The statement also noted that the report “neither quoted any source nor sought confirmation or denial of any of its specious conjectures before publishing.”
The former governor then asked Nigerians and members of the Peoples Democratic to disregard the report.

NCDC Reports Three New Cases Of Omicron Variant

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Tuesday afternoon announced that three additional cases of the Omicron variant have been reported.

The new cases bring the total of the recently discovered variant of the COVID-19 virus in Nigeria to six.
The PUNCH reports that the Omicron variant, which was first reported by South Africa, has been designated a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization.
Though the global health body says it is still launching investigations into the new strain, several countries such as the United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada among others have issued travel restrictions into their territories.
The NCDC in the statement signed by the Director-General, Ifedayo Adetifa further explained that the three additional cases were detected in passengers linked to South Africa in November.
The statement partly reads, “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has confirmed three more cases of COVID-19 with the B.1.1.529 SARS-CoV-2 lineage, i.e., the Omicron variant, in Nigeria.
“In addition to the three cases announced earlier on 1st December 2021, this brings the total number of confirmed cases of the Omicron variant detected in Nigeria to six. All the Omicron cases so far were detected in persons with recent travel history to South Africa in November.
“The NCDC through the National Reference Laboratory continues to coordinate genomic surveillance activities across the country to sequence all positive COVID-19 samples from international travellers arriving in Nigeria. This includes sequencing of positive samples from international travellers from October 2021 to date.
“The Delta variant remains the dominant variant and so far, we have not seen the replacement of this variant by the new Omicron variant as observed elsewhere.”
