Tofa Was Committed To Peaceful Nigeria, Anyim Mourns

Former Senate President and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has mourned a former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention in the aborted 1993 third republic, Alhaji Bashir Tofa.

Tofa was announced dead on Monday at the age of 74.
Reacting, Anyim, in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Sam Nwaobasi, said he received with deep sorrow, news of the death of the elder statesman and veteran politician.
According to the statement, “Sen. Anyim notes that the Late Alhaji Bashir Tofa was a committed Nigerian who throughout his more than 40 years of active partisan politics demonstrated his strong belief in politics of accommodation and consensus-building. He was so committed to a peaceful Nigeria that throughout the electioneering campaigns leading to the 1993 presidential elections, in which he was the candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC), Alhaji Tofa never did anything, in words or actions, that could have instigated crisis in any form.
“Sen. Anyim commends Alhaji Tofa’s “politics without bitterness” and strongly recommends such disposition to politicians of today in the interest of the peace, unity and harmony of our dear country even as we approach the 2023 general elections.
“Sen Anyim regrets that Alhaji Tofa died when his experience and elderly counsel would be most needed as the country battles with multiple challenges.
“Sen. Anyim deeply condoles with the late Alhaji Tofa’s family, the good people of Kano State and Alhaji Tofa’s many friends and associates all over Nigeria. He prays that Almighty God will grant the Soul of Alhaji Tofa eternal rest.”

2023: Tinubu Best Candidate For Presidency -Group

A group under the auspices of the Network for Tinubu has urged the presidential aspirants in the South-West to wait for their turn and allow the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to get the presidential ticket of the party ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

The group said the only way to repay Tinubu for his sacrifices for the country was to hand him the APC presidential ticket.
The convener of the group, Mr Femi Adekanmbi, at the inauguration of the group on Monday in Akure, explained that the group was made up of no fewer than 1,000 members and delegates from each of the 18 local government areas of Ondo State and were ready to give their support for the Tinubu’s presidential ambition.
He said, “Today (Monday) marks the revolutionary movement for Tinubu who is a benefactor to many. He is a man I know too well. He has assisted most politicians today and that is why we are rooting for him.
“For us, this is the time to pay Tinubu back for what he has done for us as far as Ondo State and South-West is concerned. We have our people at the various local government areas and in each of the wards. In each local government, our members and delegates who are rooting for Bola Ahmed Tinubu are up to 1,000.
“As a matter of fact, he is the best candidate for this job. We are all here to ensure that he wins 100 per cent in Ondo State and not only in Ondo but across the nation. He is the one that will take Nigeria to the greater height. He has what it takes to do this job.”
In his remarks, the Director General of the group, Mr Tolu Babaleye, stated that the state will be sealed for the former Lagos State governor.
He said, “When you look at the antecedent of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is the right time for APC to pay him. Nigeria and APC are what they are today courtesy of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. When the man was working day and night, spending his resources to the detriment of his family and business, the people who are aspiring today looked away.”

Suspected Herdsmen In Military Uniform Sack Edo Community

Suspected Fulani herdsman, armed and dressed in military uniform, on Sunday reportedly invaded a farming community, 2nd Abumere Ojigbelu Camp in the Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State.

The marauders were said to have chased the villagers away taking over their farms, homes and properties. Some of the villagers who escaped are now taking refuge in other communities around Okada.
One of the victims, Mattu Alli, from Taraba State narrated his ordeal: “I lack words to explain what I witness in our community. I have been here for over 20 years with my family and we farm. I was in my compound with my family having a good time when we started hearing gunshots and saw people running in different directions.
“I saw one Benin man running towards my compound, I asked him where he was running to and he said herdsmen have taken over the village chasing people away from their houses. So I called my wife and we ran for our lives. I did not see my children every one of us ran in different directions. As I speak to you now, I don’t know the whereabouts of my wife and children.
“One of the Fulani herdsmen pointed a gun at me and said they were for peace. He said they would only kill people if they refused to allow their cows to feed on their crops. ‘The yams and cassava you people have are for our cows. If you people touch our cows we will kill everybody in this village.’ For us to be safe, we ran to the next community.
Another victim, Sunday Chimen, said: “I have been in this village for over 20 years farming. What we saw surprised us. We heard gunshots and people running in all directions. We later discovered that Fulani Herdsmen had taken over our community with sophisticated AK 47 and threatened to kill us if we didn’t cooperate with them.
“For us to stay alive, we decided to run for our dear lives leaving our properties and running to unknown places. We are calling on the security agencies to come to our aid as our community is under siege.”
Mrs Ngozi Chimen who was also affected said: “The nefarious activities of these Fulani herdsmen have been going on in our community for the last two months. They entered into our farms, chased us away and harvest our plantain to feed their cows. You dare not look at their faces. Some of them were in Army uniform. We need help, we need government assistant.”
When contacted, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Kotongs Bello, said he has not been briefed on the development.
However, he promised to get back as soon as he finished speaking with the Division Police Officer in charge of the area but was yet to do so at the time of filing this report.

Man United Vs Wolves: Rangnick Suffers First Defeat As United Coach

Wolves ended Ralf Rangnick’s unbeaten start as Manchester United interim manager on Monday as Joao Moutinho’s strike earned a deserved 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

A first home defeat to Wolves in 42 years leaves United still seventh in the Premier League table, four points adrift of the top four.
But it was another lacklustre performance that was just as concerning as the result for Rangnick as the Red Devils were thoroughly outplayed.
An injury crisis at centre-back with captain Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly all missing, forced Rangnick to hand Phil Jones his first Premier League appearance in two years.
But the former England international was one of few United players to emerge with any credit from a ragged display that raises questions over their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo was named United captain for just the second time in the absence of Maguire.
In his new year message on social media, Ronaldo said he was “not happy” with the state of affairs at United and that “we have to work harder, play better and deliver way more than we are delivering right now.”
However, there was no sign of improvement as Ronaldo was kept quiet up against a number of his Portuguese international teammates.
David De Gea was the difference between the sides when United won 1-0 at Molineux in August and the Spaniard was again his side’s saviour with a finger tip save to turn Ruben Neves’ volley over.
Wolves managed more shots in the first half than they had in their previous three matches combined.
But Bruno Lage’s men have scored just 14 goals in 19 league games and again failed to make their control of the game show in the scoreline.
Rangnick left Bruno Fernandes on the bench after the Portugal midfielder missed Thursday’s 3-1 win over Burnley due to suspension.
Fernandes had been United’s talisman for 18 months till Ronaldo’s return to the club in August, but his slump in form has been symptomatic of the Red Devils’ poor season.
However, it was not until Fernandes’ introduction on the hour mark that the home side even began to threaten a breakthrough.
Fernandes should have opened the scoring when he rattled the crossbar with the best chance of the match from Nemanja Matic’s cross 23 minutes from time.
Moments later his free-kick was headed home by Ronaldo, but clearly from an offside position.
Ronaldo then dragged a shot wide from a narrow angle.
But United’s attacking flurry quickly fizzled out.
Romain Saiss hit the bar from a free-kick as Wolves continued to pose a threat.
And the visitors finally got their reward eight minutes from time when Jones’ header fell kindly for Moutinho at the edge of the box and he drilled low into the bottom corner.
Jose Sa was still needed to make a vital save from another fierce Fernandes free-kick with virtually the last kick of the game.
Victory lifts Wolves up to eighth, just three points behind United.

One Killed, Four Injured As Amotekun, Suspected Hoodlums Clash In Osun

A man simply identified as Adam, was reportedly shot dead, while four others were injured during a clash between men of Osun State Security Network, otherwise known as Amotekun corps, and some suspected hoodlums in Osogbo.

According to sources in the Balogun Agoro area, where the incident occurred, three Amotekun operatives had gone to the neighbourhood to retrieve some tools seized by a group of hoodlums that had earlier attacked a construction site at Olaiya area of Osogbo.
It was further learnt that an altercation between the two groups, after the hoodlums were asked to release the items seized, later went bloody as the men, rather than releasing the tools, allegedly pounced on the Amotekun operatives and stabbed one of them on the head.
A resident of the area, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking on the incident, said one of Amotekun men had shot in self-defence, as the hoodlums swooped on them.
“Five of the boys that attacked Amotekun men were shot. One Amotekun corps was stabbed on the head. The agency patrol van brought to the area was also damaged. One of the boys that were shot later died. The incident happened on Friday,” the resident stated.
But when contacted, the state Commandant, Osun Amotekun Corps, Brig. Gen. Bashir Adewimbi (retd.), said a group of hoodlums led by one Lekan, also known as ‘Emir’, attacked Amotekun men who were in the area on assignment.
He said, “One the operatives had to shoot into the air to disperse the hoodlums and ensure that they escape from the area. In the process, one of the hoodlums was hit and, unfortunately, later died.
“Our objective is to ensure that the state is rid of insecurity and act of lawlessness by cultists and hoodlums and we would not relent from doing so. Presently, police and other security operatives have been stationed in the area to ensure that law and order are maintained.

EPL: West Ham Survive Late Crystal Palace Surge To Boost Top-Four Bid

Manchester City took another giant stride towards retaining the Premier League title with a controversial 2-1 win at 10-man Arsenal, as West Ham and Tottenham took advantage to close the gap to the top four.

City are now 11 points clear of Chelsea and 12 ahead of Liverpool, who face off on Sunday with precious little more room for error if they are to mount a title challenge despite having games in hand.
Liverpool will have to cope without manager Jurgen Klopp at Stamford Bridge after he returned a suspected positive test for coronavirus.
The Reds have also suffered three other positive cases among Klopp’s backroom staff and will be missing three unnamed players due to the virus.
A total of 18 top-flight games in England have been called off in recent weeks due to the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases, but only two of the 10 Premier League games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was also absent from the dugout after testing positive for COVID-19 for the second time earlier this week.
But that had little impact on his side’s performance as the Gunners’ continued their impressive form by pinning the champions back for the first 45 minutes.
Arsenal took the lead when Bukayo Saka swept home Kieran Tierney’s pass, but felt they should have had more of a half-time advantage as Martin Odegaard was denied a penalty for a trip by Ederson.
The home side’s frustration at the officials boiled over after half-time as City were awarded a penalty after a VAR review for Granit Xhaka’s pull on Bernardo Silva, which Riyad Mahrez converted.
Gabriel Martinelli then missed an open goal with the chance to restore Arsenal’s lead and seconds later Gabriel Magalhaes was sent-off for two rapid yellow cards.
The 10 men nearly held out for a precious point, but City grabbed an 11th consecutive league win deep into stoppage time when Rodri poked home from close range.
“We saw our champions personality to go again,” said Rodri.
“You have to push always no matter what happens. We didn’t do a great game, but we push, we never drop and we always thought it was possible.”
– Sanchez saves Spurs –
Arsenal’s lead over the chasing pack for a place in next season’s Champions League is down to one point as West Ham’s return to form continued with a 3-2 win at Crystal Palace.
The Hammers had failed to win in five games prior to their 4-1 win at Watford on Tuesday.
David Moyes’ men were seemingly cruising by half-time. Michail Antonio’s effort squirmed beyond Vicente Guaita to open the scoring before Manuel Lanzini fired home a spectacular second.
Lanzini then grabbed his second of the game from the penalty spot after Luka Milivojevic was punished for handball.
Odsonne Edouard and Michael Olise pulled late goals back for Palace, but the Eagles were left to rue missing a host of earlier chances to get back into the game.
Spurs are just one point further back on Arsenal with two games in hand thanks to Davinson Sanchez’s 96th minute winner at Watford.
The Hornets have now lost their last six games stretching back to November, but looked like holding out for a first clean sheet in the league this season till the Colombian flicked in Son Heung-min’s free-kick in the 96th minute.
“I think at the end it was good to find a way to get three points,” said a relieved Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.
“I think that during the game when you create these chances to score you have to try to destroy these chances, especially in this type of game and against this type of opponent.”

Over 30 Killed As Gold Mine Collapses In Sudan

At least 31 miners were killed and eight missing in Sudan on Tuesday when a rudimentary gold mine collapsed, a government official said.

The disaster occurred near Nuhud, a town about 500 kilometres (310 miles) west of Khartoum, said Khaled Dahwa, the head of the state-run Mineral Resources Company in West Kordofan.

“Thirty-one traditional miners were killed because of a mine collapsing,” he told AFP, adding one person survived and eight others were still missing.
Another official at the company said four miners were killed at the same mine in January.
“Authorities at the time shut down the mine and installed security but a couple of months ago they left,” he said.
Artisanal gold mining is a dangerous profession in Sudan largely due to ramshackle infrastructure.
It flourished around a decade ago in various parts of country, with people digging the ground using excavators in hopes of unearthing the precious metal.
About two million artisanal miners produce about 80 percent of the country’s annual gold production of around 80 tonnes, according to official figures.
Sudan, one of the world’s poorest countries, has recently suffered runaway inflation and embarked on tough economic reforms, including slashing subsidies on petrol and diesel and launching a managed currency float.
It is also reeling from political turbulence in the wake of a coup-led military chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on October 25.

“The player is in good health and self-isolating at home.”
Alba, 32, joins Frenchman Clement Langlet and Brazilian Dani Alves, who also tested positive this week.
Barcelona, currently seventh in La Liga, travel to Real Mallorca (15th) on Sunday.
Several Spanish clubs have reported Covid cases, such as Real Sociedad on Monday or Real Madrid in mid-December, but no match has yet been postponed.

My Arrest Politically Motivated, Sanctioned By Uzodinma -Uche Nwosu

A 2019 governorship candidate in Imo State, Uche Nwosu, on Tuesday, said that his arrest on Sunday at St Peter’s Anglican church Eziama Obaire in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state was sanctioned by the state governor, Hope Uzodinma.

Nwosu, a son-in-law to a former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, who spoke to journalists in Owerri, on Tuesday, claimed that the plan was to assassinate him.
The politician who chronicled how he was arrested in church, taken to Enugu airport, and boarded a chartered aircraft to Abuja, alleged that the governor used his Chief Security Officer and other security operatives attached to the state government house to arrest, humiliate and possibly put him away.
Nwosu claimed that he was stripped half-naked, handcuffed on the orders of the state governor.
He said that he had no hands in the insecurity in the state, saying that the young man who accused him in a viral video of giving him money to escalate insecurity in the state was asked to implicate him.
Nwosu advised Uzodinma to eschew bitterness and concentrate more on governance than politics.
He said that those who arrested him, invaded the church, jumped to the altar, disrupted the ongoing sermon, and shot indiscriminately in the church.
Nwosu, in an emotional-laden voice, said those who “abducted me were masked, hijacked me in church and manhandled me; they ordered me to lie on the floor in the vehicle and one of them rested one of his legs on my head.”
Nwosu added, “When they drove off, they started making calls in Hausa, and unknown to them I understand Hausa. They were telling one Shaba, who is the Chief Security Officer that they have got me. At Umuaka, they stopped and ordered that I should get down. At that point, I thought they were to assassinate me. They bundled me into another vehicle and they drove off.
“When we got to Owerri, three other vehicles drove straight to the government house and the one carrying me drove towards Okigwe Road, and I asked them where they were taking me to but they never responded to me. They drove towards Okigwe and stopped. At this point, I thought they wanted to assassinate me. They asked me to remove my cloth, handcuffed me, snapped me, made a video, and sent it to the governor’s CSO.
“We continued until we go to Enugu airport. We waited for about 90 minutes before a chartered flight arrived. We boarded and we landed in Abuja. We moved to force headquarters and we did interviews. They accused me of sponsoring insecurity in Imo State. I want to thank the IGP who intervened and ordered my release.”
Responding, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said neither the governor nor the state government had a hand in the arrest of Nwosu.

Torres Joins Barcelona From Man City

Spanish international Ferran Torres signed for cash-strapped Barcelona on Tuesday from Manchester City, the Catalan side announced.

Despite their financial struggles, Barcelona have reportedly agreed a deal worth an initial 55 million euros ($62 million, £47 million) for the 22-year-old.
“FC Barcelona has reached

an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of Ferran Torres,” Barcelona said in a statement on their website. “The player has signed a contract for the next five seasons, until 30 June 2027.
“His buyout clause has been set at 1,000 million euros.”
Torres scored 16 goals in 43 appearances for City since joining from Valencia last year but this season has been disrupted by a fractured foot that has kept him out since October.
He won the Premier League, League Cup and reached the final of the Champions League during his only full season in Manchester.
City manager Pep Guardiola said last week that Torres had asked to leave and he would not stand in his way.
Torres will fill the vacuum left at Barcelona by another former City striker Sergio Aguero.
City’s record goalscorer was forced to retire earlier this month due to a heart condition, just months into his spell with the Catalan giants.
Already eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage for the first time in 20 years, Barca face a fight just to qualify for next season’s competition as they sit seventh in La Liga ahead of the winter break.
However, they could even still have trouble registering Torres within the salary cap imposed by La Liga.
Lionel Messi’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain was caused by the club being unable to retain the Argentine due to spiraling debts.
Barca recorded losses of 481 million euros last season, with a gross debt of 1.35 billion euros.

BIG LOSS: Anti-Apartheid Icon Archbishop Desmond Tutu Dies At 90

South African anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu, described as the country’s moral compass, died on Sunday aged 90, President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

“The passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa,” he said in a statement.
A tireless activist, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for combatting white minority rule in his country.
Famously outspoken, even after the fall of the racist apartheid regime, Tutu never shied away from confronting South Africa’s shortcomings or injustices.
It was Tutu who coined and popularised the term “Rainbow Nation” to describe South Africa when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black president.

MASSOB Faults DSS On Alleged Plot To Kidnap Lawmakers

THE Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has dismissed the warning by the Director of State Services that lawmakers may be exposed to kidnapping while on recess during the Yuletide.

MASSOB’s National Director of Information, Samuel Edeson, told Sunday PUNCH in a telephone interview that such warning was aimed at creating fear in the lawmakers.
Edeson argued that rather than create fear by sounding a note of warning, the DSS should be proactive in foiling suspected plans to abduct the lawmakers.
He said, “If they gathered such information and know that such a thing was to happen, they should have arrested those people (kidnappers) instead of coming out to make noise. Nigerian security agencies cannot tell you the truth. This is called propaganda.
“They say a bad workman always quarrels with his tools. They just want to seek for attention; they don’t know what to do; so, they try to make noise so that people would be afraid and pretend as if they are working while they are not.
“I don’t see any group of responsible people that would plan to kidnap their representatives. The layman that knows nothing about security cannot be involved in the kidnapping.”
The MASSOB’s spokesman however challenged the DSS to arrest and prosecute those involved in the alleged plan to abduct National Assembly members.
He said, “If there is an atom of truth (in their claim), they (DSS) should arrest and arraign such people and not crying wolf and creating fear because they know these honourable men would be going on recess to celebrate with their families.”

Money Lending: Committee To Shut Down Businesses In Enforcement Drive –FCCPC

The joint committee tackling violation of consumer rights in the money lending industry will shut down illegal businesses at the commencement of its enforcement, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says.

Mr Babatunde Irukera, the Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday that the enforcement would commence soon.
NAN reports that the joint committee was made up of representatives from FCCPC, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Other agencies involved in the committee are the National Information Technology Development Agency and the National Human Rights Commission.
Irukera said that committee would also be writing interim regulations which money lending companies must comply with.
“The joint committee is meeting and agreeing on how to proceed but I can say that two of the entities of the joint committee will be going on the field and doing enforcement work now, very shortly.
“They will be closing down businesses and engaging App stores to shut down certain applications that are infringing and abusive.
`We are also going to be writing interim regulations and some basic information for all these money lenders to provide information so that people will know who they are.
“Some of them are just Apps that we do not even know who the promoters are.
“So we are going to provide certain frameworks for them to comply with before doing business,‘’ he explained.
On the increasing number of consumer complaints about services by insurance companies, Irukera said that the commission was progressing in their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).
According to him, we anticipate that as we conclude that MoU early next year, we will have more industry wide interventions in that space.
“We get a lot more complaints about the insured who have paid their premium and are not been settled and so, we are engaging NAICOM on that.’’

Insecurity: Kukah Knocks Buhari, Northern Critics, Says Region Descending Into ‘Arewanistan’

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, on Saturday, hit the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over the worsening security situation in the country.

The cleric said the President owes Nigerians explanations as to the rising kidnappings and killings in Nigeria.
In his 2021 Christmas Message titled, ‘A Nation Still In Search of Truth & Vindication’, Kukah also slammed his “northern brethren” who levelled accusations against him when he raised the alarm about the odious state of insecurity in the region.
Kukah said Katsina-born Buhari from northern Nigeria and his government must move quickly “before Arewa, our beloved Arewa, descends into Arewanistan!”
By his mention of “Arewanistan”, the cleric reminds Nigerians of Afghanistan’s takeover in August 2021 by an Islamic militant group known as the Taliban following the withdrawal of American forces from the landlocked Asian country. The fighters took over the war-torn country with 39 million people forcing Afghanistani civilian President Ashraf Ghani to abscond the presidential palace and jet out.
In his 2021 Christmas message, Kukah recalled, “At about this time last year when I raised the alarm about the perilous state of affairs in northern Nigeria, all kinds of accusations were levelled against me especially by my northern brethren. When the Catholic Bishops protested openly against the killings of our people in March 2020, we were accused of acting against government with religious motives being imputed to our noble intentions. Now, we are fully in the grip of evil.
“Today, a feeling of vindication only saddens me as I have watched the north break into a cacophony of quarrelsome blame games over our tragic situation. A catalogue of unprecedented cruelty has been unleashed on innocent citizens across the northern states. In their sleep, on their farmlands, in their markets, or even on the highway, innocent citizens have been mowed down and turned into burnt offerings to gods of evil. Communities have been turned into gulags of misery, death, pain, and perfidy. We must move quickly before Arewa, our beloved Arewa, descends into Arewanistan!”
Continuing, the fiery preacher described as complicitous, the continued silence of the Buhari regime on the disappearance of the remaining Chibok schoolgirls, Dapchi schoolgirls Leah Sharibu and other abducted students forgotten for years in their captors’ den.
He wrote, “The silence of the federal government only feeds the ugly beast of complicity in the deeds of these evil people who have suspended the future of entire generations of our children.
“Every day, we hear of failure of intelligence, yet those experts who provide intelligence claim that they have always done their duty diligently and efficiently. Does the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not believe that he owes parents and citizens answers as to where our children are and when they are coming home?
“Does the President of Nigeria not owe us an explanation and answers as to when the abductions, kidnappings, brutal, senseless, and endless massacres of our citizens will end? When will our refugees from Cameroon, Chad or Niger return home? We need urgent answers to these questions.”
“While I commend the efforts of our security men and women, I call on the President, in collaboration with the Governors who are doing their best to preserve and protect their people to develop a more honest, open, and robust strategy for ending the humiliation of our people and restoring social order to our people. We have borne enough humiliation as communities and as a country,” he added.

Amotekun Rescues Nine Kidnap Victims In Osun

The Western Nigeria Security Network also known as Amotekun Corps on Saturday rescued nine persons who were kidnapped by unknown gunmen along Ipetumodu-Ilesa expressway in Osun State.
The victims were rescued by the joint patrol team of the corps in Ondo and Osun states.

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Council of Amotekun Commanders in the South-West region and Ondo State Commander of the corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, stated this at the Ondo headquarters of the corps in Akure, the state capital.
Adeleye stated that after the victims had been rescued, efforts were ongoing to arrest the perpetrators.
According to him, the corps responded to a distress call at about 1am on Saturday and immediately they moved into the forest to rescue the victims, who were travellers.
He said, “Around 1am, we got a distress call from one of the families of the kidnap victims that the kidnappers called, asking for ransom. We thereafter moved into action. We were able to track the kidnappers. The victims were rescued and some of their valuables were retrieved but the kidnappers ran away.
“It was along Ipetumodu axis in Osun state and when we got to a village about 10km away from the road, we found out that the den is a regular dump area for kidnappers because we found so many items which show that it is a permanent place where they keep kidnap victims.
“However, we were able to rescue nine victims and a vehicle. Our men are there in the bush trailing the kidnappers but our major concern was to rescue the victims.
“Our medical team have been attending to them and after completion, we would take them to their various destinations so they can reunite with their families”
Adeleye noted that the move was to further reassure, specifically, the people of Ondo and Osun states, that Amotekun would stop at nothing in joining forces with other security agencies at ensuring that criminals are driven away from the states.
One of the victims, Ife Balogun, while narrating her ordeal, said they were traveling from Lagos to Ekiti state before the unfortunate incident.
She further narrated that their abductors kept them in the forest for several hours before the Amotekun corps invaded the camp and rescued them.

Nigerians on social media are excited as the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, ordered the immediate release of a detained female soldier, Private Sofiyat Akinlabi.
The COAS ordered that the soldier be pardoned and released on Saturday after 11 days in detention.

She was held on December 14, 2021, after she publicly accepted the marriage proposal of a youth corper simply identified as Remi at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Kwara State.

Many Nigerians and civil society organisations had since called for her release and littered social media with photos of male soldiers proposing to their love interests in uniform.
Also, two petitions on Change.org platform calling for her release had attracted over 10,000 signatures.

The family of the corper had also appealed to the military authorities to pardon Akinlabi, saying the duo met three years ago in Abeokuta where they started their love life.
In what appeared as a Christmas gift to the family and many Nigerians, the COAS ordered the release of the romantic soldier on Saturday.
Taking to social media, many excited users hailed the COAS and declared that wedding plans should commence forthwith.
A Facebook user, Aliyat Aliyat enthused, “Romantic soldier, let’s start the wedding plans.”
“Now, we can begin the wedding plans,” Itoro Orok backed Aliyat.
Another user, Onomo Oghenekevwe said, “Good news at last! I want (to) buy asoebi and eat rice. The Army must sponsor the wedding.”

This year’s Christmas came with bags of surprises as reality TV star, Khafi Ekpata and singer Modupe ‘Mo’Cheddah’ Olateru-Olagbegi showed their babies’ face to the public for the first time.
Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Khafi who married her fellow housemate, Gedoni, posed with her husband and baby for their Christmas-themed photo shoot.

The duo welcomed their first son, Malakai, in August after they got married in 2020.
However, since the birth of her child, the reality TV stars have always shielded his face from the public.
Sometime in October, a critic had asked Khafi if the child was ugly, following her decision to hide the baby’s face.
However, in a family shoot on Christmas day, the reality TV star unveiled their child’s face for all to see.

Garba Shehu Tests Positive For COVID-19, Lai Mohammed Denies Contracting Virus

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has denied being infected with COVID-19.

Mohammed, who is a also member of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, said he attended the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, the extraordinary meeting of FEC on Thursday and the inauguration of the new Minister of State for Works and Housing, Muazu Sambo, on Friday which was covered by the media.

He, therefore, wondered how he could be said to be in isolation and still be allowed to attend such important events at the Presidential Villa.
Online medium, Premium Times, had reported that COVID-19 was ravaging the Presidential Villa. The newspaper said Mohammed as well as several other Villa officials including the Permanent Secretary, State House, Tijani Umar; the President’s Aide-de-camp, Yusuf Dodo; his chief security officer, Aliyu Musa, and his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, had contracted the virus.
Responding, however, Mohammed said, “I read the story and we still have a great battle on our hands on fake news and mischievous reporting. I was in the public view on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I was at FEC on Wednesday. I coordinated press briefing on Thursday for the extraordinary EFC meeting. And the minister of power and I addressed media.
“On Friday, I witnessed the swearing-in for minister of state for power after which we had a security meeting. How can someone who has had such high level engagements for three days consecutively be ill?
“It is nothing but fake news. I am hale and hearty. Not only that, I have taken the two doses of the vaccine. I have also taken the Pfizer booster. I am a member of PSC and I am hale and hearty and I am performing at optimum level.”
However, Buhari’s media aide, Shehu, confirmed that indeed he had tested positive for COVID-19 and he was in self-isolation.
Shehu said he could not confirm if other Presidency officials had tested positive for the virus or not.
When contacted by our correspondent, he said, “What is true is that I know that I’m self-isolating and taking my medication, but I know of no other case.”

Rivers APC Criticises Wike’s Sacking Of Health Commissioner

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has criticised the state Governor, Nyesom Wike, over the sacking of the former commissioner for Health, Prof Princewill Chike, describing the action as dictatorial.

The Publicity Secretary-elect of the APC in the state, Chris Finebone, stated this in a telephone interview with Saturday PUNCH.
Recall that Wike had fired Chike for not seeking the state government’s approval to host the preliminary session of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in Port Harcourt.
Finebone said, “Such mode of sacking a cabinet member typifies the style of Governor Wike which is more of the style of a dictator. This is not the first time that he has done so.
“If you remember, he sacked the former commissioner for Environment (Dr Tamuno Igbiks), just before the media people. Head or tail, one is rather tired of talking about the knee jack style of Governor Wike.”
“In our case, we believe that God had made arrangements for us to be forgiven on the 29th May, 2023.”
Reacting, the state Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sydney Gbara said Finebone should concern himself with what goes on in his party.
Gbara stated that the APC leader in the State, Rotimi Amaechi, while presiding over the state as governor, had equally sacked commissioners.
He further said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had sacked two ministers recently, asking if Finebone would say the action of the President was dictatorial.
“Perhaps he has forgotten that when Rotimi Amachi was governor of the state, he equally sacked commissioners. Governor Wike is a man of perfection and expects that whoever is working under him does things the way they are supposed to be.
“If you do not do things the way they are supposed to be, he will show you the way out. So, Chris Finebone should concern himself with his party, the APC. We in the PDP want perfection. The governor appointed the commissioner and he has his reasons for firing him,” Gbara stressed.

Buhari Must Declare Bandits As Terrorists, Stop Treating Them With Levity –Afenifere

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to immediately declare bandits as terrorists and stop treating them with levity.

According to the Pa Ayo Adebanjo-led group, until the President take firm action against bandits and kidnappers, the security challenges in Nigeria won’t be solved.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 26 had granted an ex parte application by the Federal Government for Yan Bindiga (Hausa word for gunmen) and Yan Ta’adda (Hausa word for terrorists) to be declared as terrorists but the Buhari regime has not done so one month after.
Whereas in the case of the Indigenous People of Biafra, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), was able to gazette the designation of the Indigenous People of Biafra as terrorists on the same day that Justice Abdu Kafarati gave the order on September 20, 2017.

Afenifere, in a statement on Friday, lamented that the kidnapping, insurgency and other security threats in the country are assuming a warlike situation that required recalling retired intelligent retired officers to complement the efforts of existing security organs to halt the war.
The statement was titled, ‘Nigeria in war situation over insecurity: Afenifere calls on President Buhari to recall retired soldiers and seek help’.
The group also said, “It is disheartening that terrorists had the temerity to launch attacks near Maiduguri on Thursday, December 23, 2021, around the time the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, was visiting Maiduguri and parts of Borno State.
“Apart from the bomb blast that happened in Maiduguri, the Nigeria Immigration Services, also revealed in a letter to its border posts dated December 23, 2021, that terrorists from Mali plan to attack Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

“The above are aside kidnapping, killing, arson and burning of vehicles conveying people from one place to another as happened on Kaduna highway and in Borno and Katsina States etc. recently. The near-daily occurrence of kidnapping in Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo States among others is intolerable.”
According to Afenifere, the President must come out openly to give an ultimatum of two weeks to those carrying arms illegally to lay down their arms.
“Within the period, retired intelligent officers be encouraged to report at the military formations nearest to them with a view to reintegrating them back into the system. Needed weapons and incentives must be provided just as the intelligence units within the security organs be rejigged to weed out the fifth columnists in the army.
“This, it can do successfully, by stopping to treat bandits and terrorists with kid gloves, by genuinely providing needed equipment to the army and other security agencies, by truly engaging the youths into ventures that would earn them a livelihood, by no longer treating some bandits and terrorists as sacred cows and by liberalizing the economy in such a way that the cost of commodities and services in the country would come down considerably,” the statement added.

JUST IN: DSS Releases Man Detained For Preparing Charms For Sunday Igboho

After about six months in detention, the Department of State Services has released one Dada Ifasooto, who was arrested for allegedly preparing charms for embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

Our correspondent gathered that the DSS detained Ifasooto on July 16, 2021, some two weeks after the secret police stormed Igboho’s Ibadan residence in a Gestapo style, killing two of his aides and arresting 12 others.
Though the 12 detainees had been released on bail, the whereabouts of the two corpses of the agitator’s aides remained unknown till date as the DSS keeps mum over the matter.

In a statement on Friday by one of Igboho’s lawyers in Nigeria, Pelumi Olajengbesi, it was said that the whereabouts of Ifasooto was unknown till the 12 aides of Igboho, upon their release, revealed that they met him in DSS custody.
The statement by the lawyer was titled, ‘Dada Ifasooto Released from DSS Custody’.
It read, “This is to announce the release of Mr. Dada Ifasooto who was secretly arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) on 16th July, 2021 on the allegation that he is a native doctor who prepares charms for Chief Sunday Igboho.
“Mr. Dada Ifasooto’s whereabouts was unknown for months until one of the released detainees from SSS custody informed our office that he is in the custody of the Secret Service in an underground cell.
“The strange allegations against Mr. Dada Ifasooto and his incarceration defies logical and legal thoughts and underpins the ill-motivated persecution of Chief Sunday Igboho and his associates. Amongst other things, it exposes the straw-clutching antics of the State Security Service in this matter even as it underscores the ridiculous and unlawful length the agency is willing to go.”
Igboho, who was arrested by the Interpol at Benin Republic when he tried to catch a Germany-bound flight, has since been detained in the Francophone West African nation where he is facing migration-related charges.
He was earlier declared wanted by the DSS after he escaped a midnight raid on July 1, 2021.

Christmas: Political Leaders Must Listen To Save Nigeria – Catholic Bishops

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria on Friday called on political leaders in Nigeria to listen to constructive criticism of the citizens in order to save Nigeria from looming collapse.

The Bishops also advised Nigerian leaders to resist the temptation of arresting and prosecuting critics of the government while all political detainees should be released because they were champions or the truth

The President of CBCN, Most Revd Augustine Akubeze, said this in a 2021 Christmas message sent to journalists by the Director of Social Communications in Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Fr. Michael Umoh, in Abuja titled, ‘Speak Lord! Your servant is listening’.
The CBCN said, “I invite you to join in praying for a Nigeria government that will listen to everyone.
“Our political office holders at all levels should act according to the mind of their constituents. To listen, you must concede that the other person has dignity and goodwill.
“No one should lead with a mindset that they have the monopoly for solving every problem. To resolve the insecurity issues in Nigeria, we must listen to each other.
“If we want to resolve agitation or request for devolution of power or sovereignty of a part of the country, we must listen to each other.
“We call on the Federal Government to release all those being held in captivity and those charged because they spoke on how to move the nation forward. One may not agree with everyone. Still, one has to fight for the right of everyone to speak, and the other should listen.”
While saying that the Christmas season was a reminder the people of God’s presence in human affairs, the Catholic prelates advised Nigerians not to allow any situation to lead them to despair because God is always with them.
“We are grateful to God for all his divine interventions in our lives. We know that if not for God, things would have been worse”, the Catholic Bishops said.

COVID-19: Gombe Yet To Receive Booster Vaccine Doses – Commissioner

Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, has said the state is yet to take delivery of its booster COVID-19 vaccine doses.
Dahiru said no fewer than 109,000 doses of Pfizer had been allotted the state, adding that the state has certified all requirements, which includes preservation and safety.

He made this disclosure on Friday, while fielding questions from journalists, about the state’s readiness to contain the spread of the virus.

According to the Commissioner, booster is taken six months after completing first and second jab of either Astrazeneca or Moderna vaccines, noting that it is merely a process.
He noted that compliance with COVID-19 protocols, as well as vaccination, provided citizens with great chances of securing their lives from Coronavirus.

Dahiru said, “Booster is yet to arrive. We got the number day before yesterday (Wednesday). In the distribution list they asked if we have where to keep the vaccine. We said yes, We have already replied them that our cold store is ready.
“We can accommodate 109,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine doses and that is Pfizer; for booster for those that have taken first and second doses. For those who have not taken the first and second if you are coming for the first one you can take it. Booster is only a process, after taking first, second dose.”
Commenting on possibility of having expired vaccine in the state, the commissioner debunked such insinuations that there are expired doses.

He added, “We don’t have expired doses of COVID-19 vaccine. We don’t accept vaccines that are about to expire. In Gombe we don’t have expired vaccine, all our vaccines are potent and we have cold stores that are 24/7 powered and we have adequate storage facility.”

While taking stock of the past one year of managing COVID-19 in Gombe, the State Incident Manager added, “We have been able to test 90,885 people, 2,776 cases tested positive. 2,690 have been managed and discharged, with 60 death from confirmed cases.”

Ighalo Among Newcastle Targets

Odion Ighalo is one of a number of strikers Newcastle United are looking at ahead of the January transfer window.
Ighalo, who has had previous spells in the Premier League with Watford and Manchester United, is currently playing for Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia.

Al Shabab have informally asked Ighalo if he would be interested should Newcastle come in for him.
Ighalo is the joint top scorer in the Saudi Professional League this season with nine goals. The Nigerian moved to the Middle East from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua after his loan deal at Old Trafford came to an end earlier this year.
The 32-year-old’s contract at Al Shabab expires in the summer of 2023.
Ighalo scored 40 goals in 100 appearances for Watford between 2014 and 2017 and netted five times in 23 games for United during his year-long spell at the club between January 2020 and Janaury 2021.
Newcastle are working hard on a wish-list of players provided by Eddie Howe to improve their squad in January and try to survive in the Premier League.
The new head coach and his staff have drawn up a catalogue of talent they would like to sign – but they have found themselves between a rock and a hard place as they try to balance the short-term task of survival and a longer-term vision that may include the Championship.
The club have been linked with a string of high-profile names from across Europe since the new Saudi Arabia-backed owners took over – and they do have the financial muscle to be able to afford them.
Sky Sports News reports that many of these players are reluctant to join a relegation fight and even keener to avoid playing in the second tier during a World Cup year.

Christmas Message: Our Hearts Heavy With Suffering – Kaigama

The hearts of every Nigerian “are heavy with the suffering” they have experienced and seen in 2021 alone, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Grace Most Revd. Ignatius Kaigama has said.

According to him, with security challenges, COVID-19 pandemic, and agitations for self-determination, Nigerians would not forget 2021 in a hurry
Kaigama who stated these in his Christmas message made available to journalists in Abuja on Friday also called on Nigerians not to give up on the country, saying although the present situations may be tough, “God is in control.”
The cleric told the faithful not to give up on their country, but “dare to look ahead and again embrace the hope for a better Nigeria.”
Kaigama said, “Christmas this year has found us in the throes of woes and distressing circumstances far beyond our human control.
“As Nigerians, in almost every part of this country, our hearts are heavy with the suffering we have experienced and seen this year alone, the many deaths as a result of terrorism, kidnapping and banditry, the depressing economic situation with inflation spiraling out of control, crashing further the ordinary man who has already been drained of joy, peace, and hope, the nagging presence of COVID-19 which has killed and forced a disturbing distance between us our loved ones and indeed the rest of humanity.
“The violent agitations for self-determination, which have come with the loss of lives and limbs, have left horrific scars on our collective psyche. All these make this year one that many Nigerians may not forget in a hurry. Nevertheless, Christmas proclaims, ‘Joy to the world the Lord has come.’
“For every disenchanted Nigerian who is on the verge of giving up on this country; for anyone who is prepared to cut off his moorings and drift away to distant lands, Christmas challenges us to dare to look ahead and again embrace the hope for a better Nigeria.”
While stating that unbridled corruption and criminality were a grim reminder that selfishness had taken root in the hearts of many statesmen, the Archbishop said, “Christmas is an invitation to give up selfishness, to think only of others and how to bring the greatest happiness to them.”
“On account of Christmas, all our leaders are challenged to once again dream big for our country and to faithfully work hard to realize those dreams so as to find solutions to our teething problems and better the lives of some of the poorest people on earth,” Kaigama said.

LASUTH Attack: Hospital Workers Waited 12 Hours Before Treatment, Victim Dead, Says Family

The family of a gunshot victim, Gabriel Asoh, who died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, has said workers at the state hospital waited for 12 hours before attending to him.
It accused the hospital of negligence and demanded a public apology.

The family stated these in reaction to claims by the Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, and the LASUTH management that medical workers were assaulted by a member of the family.
PUNCH Metro had reported that a relative of Asoh, who was later identified as his neighbour, Reginald Uwandu, was arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting medical personnel at the hospital.
Our correspondent reported that Asoh was taken in a Toyota Sienna to the surgical emergency unit of the hospital around 11pm on Tuesday, December 14.
The secretary of the nursing association, Toba Odumosu, said a nurse at the hospital advised his relative to leave him in the vehicle, where a resuscitation procedure would be conducted on him before moving him to the ward.
However, Uwandu, who became impatient, allegedly attacked three nurses and a doctor at the hospital.
Asoh’s family, in a statement signed by one Chibuzor Duru on behalf of the family, said nobody was attacked at the hospital.
He noted that Asoh died while in surgery, adding that the hospital requested N50,400 to conduct a COVID-19 test on the corpse.
The statement read in part, “The management of LASUTH and the police have clearly lied in a bid to mislead the public by giving a dog a bad name to hang it. The victim/patient, late Gabriel Asoh, was shot in the stomach by armed robbers in the Agbado (AIT), area of Lagos around 10pm on December 14.
“He had been rejected by a private hospital and the General Hospital, Ilepo. It was then decided to take him to LASUTH that night. We took him to the surgical emergency ward and the nurses refused to allow our neighbour, Reginald Uwandu, who accompanied us to bring down him down from the bus.
“The wife of the victim and Mr Kingsley Asoh had been busy with the payment of all the necessary bills and seeking the doctors and nurses’ attention for the victim, while our kind neighbour, Mr Uwandu, in tears, begged and pleaded so they could attend to the victim.
“Policemen suddenly appeared from nowhere (clearly on the invitation of the LASUTH management) to drag Mr Uwandu away, while the victim/patient was left on the floor. At no time did the victim/patient fall in his hands as stated.
“Mr Gabriel Tunde Asoh was eventually taken to theatre for surgery 12 hours later. He died due to complications from his injuries.
“The morgue staff of LASUTH immediately took his body to the mortuary and then requested a COVID-19 test before an autopsy would be performed at a cost of N50,400.
“The questions we want to ask LASUTH is this: what is the use of a COVID-19 test on a man who was tragically shot by armed robbers and was vaccinated before his demise? Why did it take LASUTH almost 12 hours to perform surgery on a gunshot victim clearly deemed as an emergency? Can LASUTH tell Nigerians if 12 hours waiting time is the standard operating waiting time by hospitals before a gunshot victim will be attended to? Why is a supposed teaching hospital adamant on sending an innocent person to jail on flimsy excuses of assault when it was all a lie?”
Our correspondent learnt that Uwandu was charged with assault and granted bail by the magistrate court, while the case was adjourned till January 19, 2022.
The Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Adetokunbo Fabamwo, said a panel had been set up to investigate the complaint of delay in treatment.
He, however, declined to comment on the assault, saying the matter was in court.
“I can confirm that an autopsy to be carried out must have a COVID test done; it is the hospital’s protocol,” he added.

Nude Pictures: Police Nab Man For Blackmailing 18-Year-Old Lady In Nasarawa

A man, Mohammed Zangina, has been arrested in Kefii, Nasarawa State for alleged blackmail and extortion of an 18-year-old.
A journalist, Gimba Kakanda – @gimbakakanda, who made this known on Twitter, noted that Zangina, a married man and father of two, had been threatening the 18-year-old with nude pictures.

The arrested man was said to have demanded sex from the lady before he was caught and arrested at the Divisional Police headquarters in Keffi.
It was learnt that the man had pictures of other women on his phone.
Though pictures and video of the man’s arrest in the police station were shared, efforts to reach the Nasarawa Police Command were not successful as of the time of filing this report.
However, Kakanda explained that the man was arrested with the help of police officers, whom he said were professional in the operation.
Kakanda posted, “Having serially blackmailed a girl under 18 and got her to send him money, Mohammed Zangina threatened to release her nudes in his possession unless she’s able to come to Keffi to have sex with him.
“When we got Mohammed Zangina’s number this morning, we found out his name was registered on Truecaller as ‘Namiji Mai Sharri.’ It’s Hausa for ‘the blackmailer.’ This alone alarmed us to note that Zangina is an expert in this business and must’ve preyed on many defenceless women.
“Zangina demonstrated impressive skills in evading sting operations. When the girl was asked to play along and go to Keffi from her faraway hometown as he demanded, he got her to keep on taking photos of her surroundings throughout her trip. I drove her to Keffi from Abuja. When we got to Keffi, a friend of ours at the Police Headquarters in Abuja contacted the DPO of Keffi Division, and their support was overwhelming. They instructed their men to enact our sting operation, and so we allowed the girl to be bait. He was one fish hard to catch.
“At their rendezvous, he kept instructing the girl on the phone to make aimless moves while he studied the surroundings. The plain-clothed policemen acted as unsuspecting passers-by, with one even pretending to haggle price with a sugarcane seller. It was impressively professional.
“Finally, he took the bait and that’s the end of what promised to be a nightmare for that long-tortured minor. We caught him and had him bundled to the police station. He had nudes of so many women saved in his phone, which is now with the police. His problems have just begun.
“The blackmailer had had so many aphrodisiacs before he came to pick her up at the rendezvous and was ready for the promised “good time” when we caught him. He took various drugs in preparation for her visit…
“The blackmailer claimed he has a wife and two kids, and a certain “Wifey” kept calling his line while he was with the police, probably wondering why he had not returned home from whatever it is she thinks he does.”
