A CALL FOR URGENT ENVIRONMENTAL INTERVENTION AT ORJI JUNCTION, OWERRI NORTH L.G.A

As a concerned citizen, I find the situation at Orji Junction, as captured in this photograph taken on October 30, 2026, deeply disturbing and deserving of urgent attention.

The heaps of refuse dumped along this busy road have become an eyesore and a serious environmental and public health concern. Orji Junction in Owerri North Local Government is a busy location with daily human and vehicular traffic. Allowing refuse to accumulate to this extent in such a strategic area is unacceptable.

Beyond the embarrassment it brings to the environment, this situation exposes residents, traders, commuters and motorists to potential health hazards. The refuse can attract rodents and disease-carrying insects, produce offensive odours, obstruct drainage channels and contribute to flooding, especially during the rainy season.

One begins to wonder: Where are the environmental sanitation authorities in Imo State Government? Who is responsible for ensuring that refuse is evacuated regularly from this location? Are there no designated waste disposal arrangements for the local government and communities?

This is not about playing politics or apportioning blame. It is about public health, environmental responsibility and the welfare of the people.

I respectfully appeal to the Owerri North Local Government authorities, relevant environmental sanitation agencies in Imo State and other responsible government bodies to urgently intervene and ensure that this refuse is evacuated.

Residents and traders must also take responsibility by desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

Orji Junction deserves a clean, safe and healthy environment. Our roads should not become refuse dumps, and our communities should not be exposed to preventable environmental hazards.

A clean environment is a collective responsibility, but effective waste management is also a duty of government.

Let this photograph provoke action, not just reactions.
