Gunmen on Saturday shot dead a horticulturist, Kingsley Nwachukwu, at the Nweke Market Square, Nkwerre community, in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.
Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums had robbed a nearby trader and were fleeing when they opened fire on a group of men hanging out at a pub.
Nwachukwu, who hailed from Amaegbu Umulolo village, was reportedly hit by a bullet and died on the spot.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent on Sunday that the incident had created tension in the community.
He said the community was angry that one of its promising young men was killed in such a circumstance, adding that the incident had been reported to the police.
“Nwachukwu was a member of the last age grade in Amaegbu village, Nkwerre community. The name of the age grade is Umunawuike. It is just one year now that the age grade was officially inaugurated. This is one death too many,” he added.
Our correspondent saw a photo of the remains of the late Nwachukwu.
The spokesperson for the police in the state, Micheal Abattam, had yet to respond to enquiries from our correspondent on the incident.
